  46. All of the American Mountain Men at first came from the east.  I went from
  47. here to Fr. Dix one time by bus and I saw all the mountains between here and
  48. Lancaster, PA.  Those mountains are very different from the Rocky Mountains
  49. and particularly different from the northern Rocky Mountains.  Colter spent
  50. the first winter on the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River with Dixon and
  51. Hancock.  It appears they came up the Yellowstone with that in mind.  Do you
  52. disagree that John Colter was given the title of the first mountain man?  I
  53. thought that was rather well known and an excepted fact.

  108. I am beginning to see a growing closer theme in reenactors interests in the
  109. last few years in ascertaining a higher degree of authenticity in both camps
  110. around here.  For example a quiet camp has been going on for 4 years now
  111. which concentrates on the sharing experience of learning/teaching geared at
  112. to how to in 4 season Montana weather using original mountain man equipment.
  113. This is fun!!  When we want to trade or what ever.  We can go over the hill
  114. to the Red Lodge Mountain Man Rendezvous.

  184. Think about this,
  185. 1. most trappers had a horse they would ride along with 1,2 or 3 pack
  186. animals.
  187. The reason for the pack animals was not to pack in, it was to pack out
  188. (furs). There for a trapper in a party caries in equipment and provisions
  189. for the fall and spring trapping season and when he takes his furs to
  190. market, he cached all the unnesecary stuff where he can reclaim it for the
  191. next years season.
  192. 2. Unless a trapping party was in danger during the trapping season, they
  193. would prety much stay in the same area until in was spring.
  194. 3. The majority of trapping was done by Indians and hides were traded at
  195. forts owned by diferent concerns the bigest two were American fur and HBC.
  196. The statements I have just made will only be held dear to me until someone
  197. straightens me out.

  232. triflers, to relish.  I go back and read some of these posts again and=

  236. I read the complete archive and monitored the current discussions before I

  238. posted my first word, it was the courteous thing to do before joining the

  241. A lot of my time and energy has gone into my few meager postings.  I have
  242. shared of my research as have many others whose research outshines mine and
  243. who
  244. have shared even more freely.  I work hard at my writing to try and speak
  245. clearly, it does not come easy to me.   A major posting takes me many hours
  246. over several days to compose.

  248. Good and thoughtful answers take a lot of time to write; busy people have
  249. worked hard to prepare useful postings, and Dean has made it easy for=

  253. I suggest everyone read the archive as it is more conservative of other

  546. Right. I hope I'm not taken wrong. I believe in researching and getting the
  547. gear as historically correct as I can. It's just that I don't place an
  548. emphasis on rendezvous. I enjoy it, yes. But to really experience what the
  549. mountain men did, and use the gear available to them, and learn what they
  550. knew, one has to get away from the rendezvous.

  597. There are many modern mountain men who do not have personas, but prefer to
  598. just be a modern mountain man trying to live as closely to the old ways as
  599. possible in order to learn the survival skills the old timers had. There are
  600. some, even, who live out pretty much full time today. Their equipment
  601. sometimes becomes a hodge-podge of various influences, depending on where
  602. they are when something wears out. Such as a pair of brain tanned trousers
  603. worn with a southwest style shirt that replaced a typical trade shirt, or a
  604. flat crowned hat that replaced a round dome lost in a horse wreck. Just as
  605. could happen in the old days. Trying to put a host of regulations on those
  606. who are not reenactors won't work. Most of them aren't even aware of these
  607. discussions and don't read the magazines. They are busy doing research in
  608. libraries and getting out on the ground to try out what they find.

  891. I'm sitting here looking at the (a?) AMM flag.  George sent it to me to have
  892. copied so that we can have one in the display.  As previously noted the top
  893. is a light sky blue, the middle green and the bottom a light brown.  The
  894. logo in the center has a blue field.  In green letters around the edge is
  895. the American Mountain Men.  The center of the logo is a powder horn and knife.

  898. for the Pinedale exhibit.

If your saying bragging say so, you'll find many of these guys/gals don't have to bragg about anything, most have been in this sport for 20 to 40 plus years and many have been the one's that have helped to change the Hollywood thinking of the 40's and 50's. Many have helped in getting the muzzleloading seasons for their states that we all enjoy today, all by a hell of a lot of hard work and money out of their own pockets.
