confidence in his ability to win your forthcoming match that I am prepared
to put his wife and daughter on the blanket as a prize to the winner.  What
better vote of confidence could a Brother want?  (Is that Larry or his wife
and daughter cursing in the background????)

It will be a match to remember and certainly to tell tall tales about.
Besides, if you do win, just remember how long a walk it is to the airport
from the campsite.

MadJack,

You have opened a can of worms with this one, have seen this question before with a hundred different answers. Everyone has seen an original shooting bag in a museum, a book or knows someone that has one.

An 1836-1844 bag at a museum here in Colorado (time period used by the owner), several repairs to bag itself, had these items in it for ramrod and cleaning with ramrod.

For cleaning tools (ramrod assy. only), don't know what this man carried whether flint or perc. gun.

Service tools:
(1) tow worm
(1) ball puller (screw type) not the ones we see today
    w/brass protector cone.
(1) cleaning jag
(1) breech plug scrapper (coned to fit plug)

Ramrod pulling devises:
(1) small iron pin w/a screw that went in ramrod to pull if
    stuck, screw has a hole for pin in its shank making the
    shape of a "T" when assembled.
(1) ramrod extention - 4" long with ramrod fittings on both
    end - male & female, have made one of these and it gives
    you a better grip.

These where the tools for ramrod and bore cleaning operations only, other tools to service the rest of gun where typical to most kits. From what this gentleman carried, he seemed well equipped.

Can't tell you about everything they used, Bill, but one thing was a gun
worm. This was used on the bare end of the ramrod, and there was no ferrule
for screwing things into. The large or muzzle end of the ramrod was just
carved to swell out to large size, and this was used as the ramming end.
The small, tapered end that fits into the ramrod hole had a screw thread
carved into the wood, and the worm screwed onto that.

I've used this setup, and it works well. You must remember to always twist
the ramrod only in the clockwise direction, so yo won't unscrew the worm
while it's in the barrel. There is no way to pull a ball with this, and I
don't know how they did that when using this method.

On page 104 of the coffee table book "The National Museum of American =
History, A Smithsonian Museum" there is a photograph of a field mess =
chest attributed to George Washington, possibly the same kitchen mess =
refered to in the post.  It contains tin plates, platters, utensils, and =
a tankard.  I have the photo saved as a jpg file which I will send to =
anybody who asks.  The image is saved as a closeup, rather than as a =
full photo and will have to be viewed piecemeal.  The closeup details =
are very good and may shed some light on the question at hand.
