whats wrong with that clip? Its a real grizzly, slamming into a real
vehicle. Perhaps people should think all grizzlies will slam into their
vehicles if they drive too close to them. I don't think the griz footage
can even be compared to the L&C film. Perhaps I'm missing your point.
      Please excuse my Grizzly humor. How do you make a regular gun a good
Griz gun? Take off the front sight, that way it doesn't hurt so bad when
the Griz shoves it up your rearend! Tell that one to people heading back
into Griz country.
      Hikers in Yellowstone and Glacier Park sometimes wear large steel
bells (like Indian dancers wear) to warn Grizzlies that they are coming.
How do you tell black bear scat from Grizzly scat? Grizzly bear scat is
the one with the bear bells in it!
      We've had Grizzlies eating corn spilled during train wrecks that has
fermented and the Grizzlies were getting drunk! How'd you like to run into
a drunk Grizzly! Now that would be a real bear hug!
      L&C were pretty cocky when they first heard of the Grizzly bear from
the Indians. They felt their rifles were much more superior than the
indians bow, arrows and indifferent fuzees. After a few run-ins with
the "White Bear" Lewis wrote something like, The men's curiosity towards
the white bear is satisfied and that he'd rather fight two indians than
one White Bear. He would know as he did both.
      Got to love them Grizzlies!  Go Griz! (Our University of Montana
football team and mascot!)

 I didn't say, or mean to imply, that there was anything wrong with the
Craighead clip.  My point is that I'm afraid that the L&C show might achieve
similar longevity as has the film about the Craighead's work.  The Craighead
piece has endured for almost half a century because of its merits.   The L&C
show is a lightweight and doesn't deserve similar icon status, at least in
my opinion.  However, I bet that the History Channel will show it at least
twice a year forever...with each showing giving it more gravitas.  That
would be a version of the Big Lie politics of the 90's....tell a Big Lie
often enough and eventually people will believe it.
Another thing, that Griz didn't attack the Ford because the Craighead's
drove too close to it, rather it woke up too soon after the Craigheads
darted it to take measurements and came up plenty mad.  That was one peeved
bear and I am glad I wasn't in the station wagon, as the fight was no better
than a draw from what I saw.

  Now I understand what you meant. When you questioned the Griz clip
accuracy I thought you didn't like it.
  I saw the L&C special that had guys in it that were wearing candy stripe
capotes as they crossed the pass. They also interviewed Karsminski. It
wasn't the best special but it wasn't the worse. I tell people to read the
journals and follow the L&C Trail.

I was looking through some old writings of mine and found this from years
ago.  Perhaps some of you will relate.

 THE HIVERANNO
 There is something grossly romantic about being well mounted with an
expertly prepared pack animal in tow.  It brings up mystical images of an
old hiveranno working his way up some long forgotten trail, living by his
wits, and guided by his lust for treasures.
 After trying to fill his saddle, I have great respect for that man in
history.  Horse packing is arduous work.  Care must be taken to keep your
stock and packs balanced and in good condition.  Also, when on the trail two
or more animals require continual concern to keep out of trouble.
   He not only lived with these experiences I can share, but also lived with
the pressing danger of losing his hair to a savages scalp pole.
 I am not the type who expends lots of energy trying to look impressive, but
a feeling of unadulterated pride fills my soul when someone on the trail
looks admiringly on my carefully tied knots and well mannered mounts.
 A ghost from the past; just riding through.
