  34. Although a Interesting trip indeed. The mileage covered  {231 miles}
  35. in 31 days walking and canoeing is rather poor.
  36. Even having to line a canoe and portage... still extremely slow.
  37. Apparently they were on more of a extended camping trip, than a true
  38. cane trip. Never the less a interesting read.

  106. Extremely slow is an understatement.  They could have made better time if
  107. the canoe had been equipped with wheels but, like you said, they didn't
  108. appear to be in much of a hurry.  With that much time on their hands I wish
  109. Bob Hood had expanded his diary a little. He is a pretty good writer.

  159.     I read only a few pages of the article. It has nothing to do with the
  160. Mountainman list. They had a plastic canoe, a ton of too much gear and all
  161. high tech I'm sure. It even appeared they had a back rest on the front
  162. seat. Don't get me wrong I would enjoy reading that kind of article but
  163. not on a mountainman page. I think we should stick to the era. But thats
  164. just my humble opinion.

  179. I tried to make it clear in my post that high tech gear and other non period
  180. goods  were used on the Texas Canoe Trip.   I also thought it was clear that
  181. the article was in a public newspaper and I merely provided a link to the
  182. Star Telegram for anybody interested in reading it.  However, it seems I did
  183. not make myself clear enough to everybody.    I apologize to all those who
  184. were offended.  Personally, I learned a new trick from the article.....that
  185. of following Gar fish to find the easiest path through shallows.  I don't
  186. know if it will actually work, but it is at least as good a guess and will
  187. make a really good campfire tale.
  188. Not many of us have truly period canoes.....mine is a dark green plastic Old
  189. Towne....and some of us use a backrest of some sort.  And who is to say how
  190. much gear is too much?  If a man (or his canoe) can tote it then it's not
  191. too much.

  231. it. Modern or PC... who cares? It was a trip that many of us would
  232. like to do, I am sure.  Hopefully, in the Spring, a friend and I will
  233. be do a trek on either the New River or the GreenBrier River here in
  234. WV... 4-5 days though... not a month :)

  255. There is really no way to have a period canoe, if one thinks about it for=

  257. They all are still made using modern methods.. Wood/Canvas canoes are=
  258.  acceptted at all most all

  260. I carry a small wood cook stove, on a lot of my trips...They have been used=
  261.  since the rev are days.
  262. Seems the post was ok.. agter all is it not the "outing" or adventure that=
  263.  was the point?
  264. Myself ive taken several  over 4 months canoe trips.. and used as much gear=
  265.  as i could that would have been used say 1850. But i sure didnt suffer,=
  266.  and ate like a big dog should.
  267. I liked the article myself.. would have been a good one for the backwoods=
  268.  list.
  269. In closing.. if no one posting {and they aint much} Post away , it was=
  270.  highly interesting, though i wish they had had photos..... BUT GEEZZZ that=

  350. couple paragraphs, and ended up reading the entire piece ....<G> It reminded 
  351. me somewhat of Buck's run down the Missouri.... and that was a great trip! 
  352. Canoes are my most favorite way of getting around the NW and dammed if that 
  353. story didn't get me pumped for a run somewhere. Now, if it weren't for them 
  354. blood sucking skeeters on the Yakima......

  367. Elk Park Rendezvous-The entire area is a tinderbox,
  368. with one fire about 20 miles North of the site having
  369. consumed 13,000 acres and still uncontrolled. I am not
  370. trying to discourage anyone, but you may want to check
  371. on the Mustang Fire in Utah.  They currently have
  372. closed sections of the forest.  Does anyone have a
  373. contact number?  I can't seem to locate my map and
  374. letter, so can't update any more info.  With luck,
