I usually don't reply much on this web site but I felt a response was necessary to this question about killing buffs.
I have personally killed 4 3year old bulls with muzzle-loaders and I have witnessed at least 3 more other people kill their bulls here in Colorado in the last 25 years.
1. A buffalo brain is small and sits in the top of the head. If you shoot him between the eyes you are just going to piss him off. Draw a line between the center of the left eye socket to the center of the right horn, do that again at the r. eye to the left horn. X marks the spot where you aim if you want a dead instant like kill. I shot my last one with a .45 caliber original ky long rifle which belonged to my G.G.G. daddy. 70 grains of 3 f w/ round ball, That bull went down like he was pole-axed. Now the 1st bull I ever shot back in the 1970s. Wellllll,,,,,,,, that is another story. Suffice to say that I don't reccommend a between the eyes shot. Behind the ear is fine. You can probably do that with a light gun. I have seen that shot made on a 4 year old bull with nothing but a .35 remington. he dropped dead instantly. I also have seen one shot with a .45/70 shilo sharps at 30 yds right through the lungs. That animal died pretty quick but not as quick as a good brain shot. I have the skull of my last with one small .45 hole about an inch from the X where the brain is. M. Branson

Here's are some questions to ponder as to being prepared, whether hunting, shooting a match or defending yourself in a different area.
What kind of a gun would you use if "lucky" enough to get the winning ticket for "The Great Buffalo Raffle", will you allow an extra day for testing your gun before shooting on live game, learning about thw wind, hunting conditions or the lay of the land ?
What about a second gun, I like killing my own game not having a backup shooter doing it for me. Will you carry a second gun for this reason if a second shot is needed !
