Subject: MtMan-List: Poem: Mountain Man Tribute
Jedediah Strong Smith,
Tom Fitzpatrick, John Fitzgerald:
canyon winds in canyons herald
names of mountain fame and myth.
Provost, Colter, Glass and Kit
and Joseph Walker, first and last,
found an Eden,unsurpassed,
and freely fit inside of it.
Bridger, Beckwourth and Old Bill,
Joe Meek and the Sublette brothers,
a score, or two, of famous others
much too tough for minds to kill.
But, they all gone now, someone said,
Old Ephriam got em. Or an arrowhead.
Gone? Gone? Gone my ass!
Listen to the wind in a mountain pass.

Jeff -
From what I've read it appears that they were indeed two separate bags.
The shooting bag held those items urgently needed to use and maintain their
firearm along with whatever was most necessary to survival. Perhaps along
with a folding knife and fire starting kit, but that would be about it.
This bag was what would be grabbed, along with the rifle, if he had to run.
The possibles bag, ususally a haversack, held all the extra items.
Basically it could be considered as a suitcase. It held cooking gear,
food, clothing, and anything else that could make life more pleasant - but
not necessary to survival.
Hope that helps some.

JEFF:
I read this original question last night and was waiting for someone to
comment---yet you didn't explain what a bullet bag was---a small leather
bag with a stopper that held bullets for your rifle and would let you
take one out at a time and not have to fumble in your shooting bag---why
don't someone give us the history of the haversack and tell us how the
name came into being--what was the earliest known documentation of a
haversack--- was it invented in the town of haversack---this could be a
discussion topic just like the coffee bean and making camp
coffee---probably 30 or 40 msgs could be posted on possible ideas or real
lines of documentation--was the haversack only used by soldiers---this
has a milenium of possibilities---
yellowfeather---its your turn at bat----or are you off toating your
haversack around the countryside---I know my shooting bag is not a
haversack---cause my haversack is to heavy to hawl around the woods with
my other gear unless i'm going to be out for a extended period of time
and well away from camp---
I know yellowfeather is out there playing with his treasures in his
haversack----ken I shipped your stuff today---if you read this---saves
one msg---have a good trip---get home safe---
JEFF contact me offline if you have any questions and i will try to
help---please forgive the fun---

Joe,
I might be interested in the Hatfield. Could you send a few more details this way about it if you do decide to sell it.

Subject: MtMan-List: Question about construction of shooting pouch
I have seen pictures of several shooting bags, one in particular, that use a
brass stud to hold the flap closed. My question is about that brass stud.
Has anyone had any experience with this type of pouch? I cannot figure out
how I would make or attach that brass stud to the pouch. Any insight would
be most helpful. Thanks.
