Had a similar experience with Buck Conner a few years ago, I got stuck in the same position as you with his kind help, it took like three washings to get my breeches clean from the sticky mud - good luck.
Oh we where south of Ft. Osage on the Missouri, then again on the Mississippi, man they are big rivers. Your friends long boat would work good on that water.
Keep in touch.

When Johnny comes marching home again, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer, the boys will shout,
The ladies they will all turn out,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
The old church bells will peal with joy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling boy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lassies say
With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
Get ready for the Jubilee, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now to place upon his loyal brow,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.
Let love and friendship on that day, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Their choicest treasures then display, Hurrah! Hurrah!
And let each one perform some part
To fill with joy the warrior's heart,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

In addition to some of the things you already mentioned, I have and will,

A class on edible plants that are native to the area.
How to field dress an animal. (Check with the Directors on this one ;). )
Making and using snares.
Making bread by mixing dough "in the sack", twisting it over the end of a
small limb and baking it over the coals.
Passing around furs, trade beads and period accoutrements.
Demonstrating of fire starting (flint & steel and bow-drill).
Making cordage and knots using a Lucet made from a twig.
Making medicine wheels or bags.
Baking in a Dutch oven (which I personally hate to include for PC reasons,
but is always requested by the camp Director. Fortunately, I am not period

Depending on the group you are seeing at any given time, I have found that
the boys love anything to do with weapons and fire, and the girls love the

My camp has 4, 45 minute activity sessions each day. I tried to change the

Subject: MtMan-List: AMM Buffalo Raffle - the clock is ticking.
Date: 13 Jun 2002 13:57:42 -0700
Boys,
That's probably a very good idea Dennis, Buck has taken more of these animals than anyone I know and I have hunted with him and have seen him shoot, standing or running game he's right on. So with his skills, he still carries a second gun, that's good enough for me, the way I shoot anymore is a wheelbarrow period - I'll bring a load of weapons.
You boys better get more than one ticket, did you see the Baker Party pictures on the AMM site at: http://amm_raffle.tripod.com/amm.html nice bull and old LaVelle shooting that new Caywood smoothie.
I got my tickets, how about you Dennis and the rest of you folks? This is really a pretty good deal, you hear guys talk about cheap animals, well let me tell there's no freebies.
Have a guy at State College buy a young bull at a local auction, couldn't shoot it there, so he borrows a stock trailer to haul the animal to a place where the tree huggers won't see or know about it. Sounds like a fair idea.
The stockyard guys load the buffalo and off Cliff goes with his cheap bull, on the way coming off Jack's Mounatin the bull starts raising hell in the trailer. Cliff slows down and everything is OK, then for some unknown reason the bull jumped or something and Cliff hits a parked vehicle along side the road.
That cheap bull that he was bragging about cost him damages on the vehicle, plus on the trailer, he wouldn't tell us how much because his wife was listening, so much for cheap animals.
I'll buy a couple of $10 tickets and not worry about trying to haul a live animal, plus they help you with the care of the animal after it's down, that's a lot in itself folks.
Better get a cheap ticket at: AMM "Buffalo Raffle": http://amm_raffle.tripod.com/amm.html
The old site at: Historical Research: http://conner110.tripod.com/ is no longer any good, Historical Research & Development: http://hrd7.tripod.com/ now owns it and has combined the two at there site.
If you get lucky and win, I'll bring my fork and plate for some fine eating brother. If I win I would like you and Buck as my backup shooters with Pablo as our cook, we'll work that little sucker into the ground.

>In truth, I want to know where all the members of this and certain other lists disappeared to when they finally got their way about reducing the cost of the tickets on this raffle. It seems passingly strange, at least to several of us who are neck deep in this project, that these fellows yelled long and hard, got their way, and now most of them have not bought one lousy ticket. I guess honor is not a term that translates well, or if they had good intentions and simply fell on hard times, they should have let those of us who care about them, step up and donate a ticket in their name. Doing right to those of us who are in need can be kept very private, and is the correct thing for us to do. As for those who do not have a financial excuse, a pox on them and theirs. Half what, crazy about what ???? Anyone that runs around most of the time in a blacksmith shop barefooted and then throws out off the wall remarks needs to look in his own backyard.
Come on boys lets sell some buff tickets for the AMM, as slow as this is right now - hell it's better odds than these state lotto's for winning. The only thing going on here is Miles and Jones picking on my poor old butt, a blacksmith and a freekin' lawyer, what the heck is this place comin' to !!!
Like Buck says:
YOU HAD BETTER GET ON BOARD & GET YOUR TICKETS FOR THIS ONE FRIENDS. YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS OUT LIKE SOME OF THOSE FOLKS DID IN THE HAY DAYS OF "BUFF HUNTING ON THE GREAT PLAINS".
That's one, anyone else, this gentleman putting up his money, how about you ?
Apparently with a name like "Black Knife" you have one of the blacksmiths items. <GGG>
By the way I'm Pennsylvania Dutch - Boone's home, not a Texas boy, that's Pablo - born and breed in that State or is it still a Republic ? Remember that's the place that Crockett went to, for warmer weather.
Where are those Missouri, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado Boys at, this hunt is close for you guys, hell me and Mr. Miles have to drive half way across this country.
Hey Pablo you still awake, I know Larry will answer me.

How long has the list of "AMM Brother's Gone Under" been on the AMM Raffle site ? This is the first that I really payed attention, that's pretty neat to honor those that go before us. Hello Brothers,
Paul Jones graciously took the initiative to advertise this raffle in several National Magazines. Hopefully this will generate some sales.
Buck Connor created a web site to advertise the Great Buffalo Raffle, and several members have created links to it on their websites, way to go guys ! ! !
What we need to do is to get the WORD OUT now. Lets make this effort pay off for the land.
As to you individuals... This Hunt is an excellent opportunity. Think of all of that meat in the freezer, think of curling up on a cold night in your buffalo robe, which you hunted.....
The skull alone is worth several hundred dollars. Ok, Ok...you say you couldn't possibly do this hunt due to logistics.... Well.... you winning ticket would be very sellable. Your slight investment in the ticket, and Our Land, could net you a tidy profit on an auction, etc.... Think of that angle.
There are many on this list who would be willing, and able, to pay a discounted price for this Hunt (say $1,000?) ...... Your investment in tickets could pay off handsomely by selling the ticket.
Your odds are a heck of a lot better than playing the Lottery. right now the odds are 1:89, this sure beats 1:1,000,000,000......
Please brothers, contribute what you can, sell some tickets to friends, shooting club members, folks at local rendezvous, etc.... The drawing will be in the first few days of December. I've talked to my banker. He will do the drawing, and notorize the result. This will be a completely fair drawing.
The winner will be notified as soon as possible. Let people know this.
A disinterested party will be doing the drawing. He will inspect the drawing box, etc.... I will have a statement drawn up , which he will notorize. I will not be buying tickets, to avoid a conflict of interest. Any one who knows me, knows that I have been a good contributor to our cause. Do me a BIG favor? print this out and distribute it to your fellow party memebers? Help us get the word out, help us sell tickets, help us achieve OUR goal. Ok..ok.... I'll let go of your ear, for now.... Thanks for your attention. I am, Your Friend and Brother,
Randy 'Hardtack' Bublitz
Hey,
Like the man says:
Your odds are a heck of a lot better than playing the Lottery. right now the odds are 1:89, this sure beats 1:1,000,000,000......

<DIV>Hello to all, and Happy Fathers Day to you Dads out there,</DIV>
<DIV> This is just a reminder that The American Mountain Men are still selling tickets to the Buffal Hunt Raffle. You can find out all about the Hunt and Raffle at Buck's great website:</DIV>
<DIV> Sales have been rather slow. This translates to not many tickets in the drawing box; ie- great odds of winning ! ! ! The winner will get to hunt a large bull buffalo, black powder only, on a private ranch in Kansas. The Buffalo will be skinned and butchered for you. The winner gets it all; hide, skull, meat, everything except the gut pile (unless you want that too). </DIV>
<DIV> The drawing will be the first week of Dec., 2002. The hunt is set up for Feb., but the owner of the ranch will work with your schedule. You do want to hunt in winter, while the hide is prime. </DIV>
<DIV> Check out the website. Good luck to you. YFAB, Randy</DIV>

Randy,
You may want to contact Buck if there's a problem with the AMM raffle site, he hasn't been on this list since the Raven lady was causing all the baloney months ago here.
He's not aware of any of this or he would be working on it for sure.
I'll try calling him too, think he was going to either Bridger or Ft. Laramie today. Last week he was at Bent's, talked to him on Friday.

Buck just called me about AMM BUFFALO RAFFLE page, said he found a bad address on AMM main page and contacted Dean to correct it.
As for the banners and the sometimes ads that appear, this is not his doing, that's TRIPOD's site setup, they give the site owners a free web site as long as they TRIPOD can have the banners and ads shown. Buck is trying to get several of those site owners/me included to pay TRIPOD's monthly fee to leave that stuff off.
Oh, he still thinks that Raven is sitting and waiting to cause problems as before under a different name, reason why he's not on this list at this time.
If anyone sees any other problems with the AMM BUFFALO RAFFLE site, probably best to contact Buck at: conner_one@msn.com and he'll work on the problem.
Thanks
Concho

The AMM Jim Baker Party will be there to help as back up, skinning and general camp doings, so there will be plenty of back-up and help, don't worry about that boys.
They never miss a good time and it will be one to remember, Buck said several would film in for the web site as well as the T&LR.
Sounds better all the time doesn't it.

I got the original barrel out of Dennis Miles' Mrs. Jager, she was a smoothie at birth and like you say she too - "at one time was starting to look like she would become a mater stake if she didnt change her attitude", that's when Buck had chnaged to a rifle gun.

Got a list of Alfred J. Miller art that the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha Neb.
has in its collection. You can get the list and order copies in two sizes for
$20 and $40
(402) 342 3300 they have 130 different pieces available the Lost Scout,
Captain J. R. Walker, Fort Laramie, Bee Hunters, The Trapper Bride, Taking
the Hump Ribs to name a few. I was searching for Fontenelle Chased by a
Grizzly Bear. The Museum of the Fur Trade referred me to Joslyn. It is a pen
and ink wash that plainly shows Fontenelle with his breech cloth flapping in
the breeze with his leggings still on. He was doing his business when the
bear surprised him. I think the small size is standard paper size and the is
twice that.
The only bad questions are those that are not asked

He needs a frizzen shoe like Russ Hamns use to offer until someone complained that they glowed at night, Oh well. They would sure throw some sparks.
Since then, we have used a piece of wide hacksaw blade and sweat it on the face of the bad frizzen, like Hamns material was installed, works pretty good, but doesn't have that pretty glow.

Depends on where you are. In NY (New Amsterdam) it was Albany Hudson Valley
any where west was 5 Nations territory. If you were French it was west of
Montreal. If you lived in Philly it was a little east of present day Ft
Frederic. If you were Russian it was east of Sitka.
So it is all a matter of were you were but in the eastern north america it

I usually don't reply much on this web site but I felt a response was necessary to this question about killing buffs.
I have personally killed 4 3year old bulls with muzzle-loaders and I have witnessed at least 3 more other people kill their bulls here in Colorado in the last 25 years.
1. A buffalo brain is small and sits in the top of the head. If you shoot him between the eyes you are just going to piss him off. Draw a line between the center of the left eye socket to the center of the right horn, do that again at the r. eye to the left horn. X marks the spot where you aim if you want a dead instant like kill. I shot my last one with a .45 caliber original ky long rifle which belonged to my G.G.G. daddy. 70 grains of 3 f w/ round ball, That bull went down like he was pole-axed. Now the 1st bull I ever shot back in the 1970s. Wellllll,,,,,,,, that is another story. Suffice to say that I don't reccommend a between the eyes shot. Behind the ear is fine. You can probably do that with a light gun. I have seen that shot made on a 4 year old bull with nothing but a .35 remington. he dropped dead instantly. I also have seen one shot with a .45/70 shilo sharps at 30 yds right through the lungs. That animal died pretty quick but not as quick as a good brain shot. I have the skull of my last with one small .45 hole about an inch from the X where the brain is. M. Branson

Here's are some questions to ponder as to being prepared, whether hunting, shooting a match or defending yourself in a different area.
What kind of a gun would you use if "lucky" enough to get the winning ticket for "The Great Buffalo Raffle", will you allow an extra day for testing your gun before shooting on live game, learning about thw wind, hunting conditions or the lay of the land ?

<P><FONT size=4>What about a second gun, I like killing my own game not having a backup shooter doing it for me. Will you carry a second gun for this reason if a second shot is needed !</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=4>I do, and can say after a dozen animals I have used that second gun maybe 5 times. In fact on one outing ("Quill" can tell you) I needed to grab an additional gun his - Ken "Quill" Smith's, to finish a bad acting cow that had been hit 4 times before the killing shot behind the ear, so believe me these are hard animals to get on the ground at times.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=4>In zero weather there's nothing like a charging wounded 1200 lb. animal to get your attention, brother I have had cold sweat drop off my shoulder blades and hit me in the crack of the butt after the last killing shot. Draw a line between the center of the left eye socket to the center of the right horn, do that again at the r. eye to the left horn. X marks the spot....... Now the 1st bull I ever shot back in the 1970s. Wellllll,,,,,,,, that is another story.....
I also have seen one shot with a .45/70 shilo sharps at 30 yds right through the lungs. That animal died pretty quick but not as quick as a good brain shot. M. Branson

I have seen as you say "brain shots" from the front and rear, they don't always work due to distance, angle and of course the shooter, it is a small area to hit.
Have seen a number shot through the lungs and like you say it will take a few minutes for them to get sick and then the work starts.
I have put down 6 animals, not like the dozen Buck has, but I'm sure he would agree with what we have said Mike.
