I thought being on this list was to keep the MWH alive and well. What is =

I met some really nice people on this list and I hope things change (for =

Ivan didn't threaten anyone. Stefan did. Last year.

Well, Stefan's been alluding to some projects but so far nothing's

Nope. It didn't happen.
That really put a damper on things here on the list for a long time
afterwards, then the legal threats came and everything kinda came to
a screeching halt.
I've never seen a more devoted and enthusiastic group of people
working harder for no profit to support a group. We didn't deserve
to be attacked. Ivan is on video autographing the CDs produced
by the members of this list - smiling all the while and apparently
pleased to have his own copies as well. Then two years later his
brother threatens legal action because of what was going on.
When there's nothing left to do there's nothing left to say

Subject: (hats) Most meaningfull MWH song
Okay,
I mentioned recently that I've joined another mailing list for a band from
the 80's called "The Alarm". Well, there's been a discussion going on in
that list about which album, and which songs from "The Alarm" mean the most
to the subscribers of the list. And, even though it's probably been done
already on this list, I thought it would be a good topic of conversation
since things have died down here a bit lately (which has in itself been a
topic of conversation......very sad).
Anyway, I love all the MWH songs, but the one that I think I love and relate
to the most is "Things In My Life".
"Well I think that I'm in Scotland
& and I'm walking through the forest in the rain
I wonder if I'll fall in love again"
By the way....does anybody have any idea how many people subscribe to this
list? I know Stefan used to be on it, how about Ivan? I've never read
anything from Ivan, or any of the other MWH family.
Well...take care and have a great holiday weekend!

Steve,
Good question - when I joined the list last fall, that's kinda what I
expected the discussion would be, but that was about the time as the
whole bootleg thing happened, and so I haven't seen much discussion of
the music at all.
Favorite album: Can I count the 2-for-1? If not, then I guess I'll be
typical and say ROY.
Favorite/ most meaningful song: I've always liked "Security." It's very
simple, but lyrically it's awesome, and structurally it has a good build
to it.
I look forward to seeing what everyone else thinks.

For me, Folk of the '80s (Part III) is the album that most impacted my life.
It's a very thoughtful and philosophical album, and at the time it was
released, I was going through a mental awakening as a teenager, discovering
who I truly was inside. That album helped me to lay out my own path.
The most meaningful song for me is probably the title track, "Folk of the
'80s." Besides stretching my mental and spiritual muscles, I was also
expirimenting with different looks at the time.
"Don't grow a beard; they'll call you a hippie."
"Don't cut your hair; they'll call you a hippie."
"Don't cut your beard; they'll call you a hippie."
It helped me to realize that others wouldn't understand me no matter how I
looked, unless I looked exactly like them (which leads to a lyric from
another song... can anyone guess which one?), so I just was myself, and
didn't worry about the opinions of others. After all, "Others cry; why
should I?"

i think mine'd have to be RoY. i was wanting to get seriously into
synths at the time and this album showed me another avenue to explore.
here in the UK we'd got people like Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Human league
(around for years b4) plus other ground-breaking bands all doing really
decent music (though THL by this time were past their best) and along
came quite a quirkly little album from acorss the water full of amazingly
catchy 3 minute pop songs. we only really had TSD in the charts here but
i followed the bands career from that day onwards - something that all my
friends though was a bit crazy - but i now have a big studio and they
don't, so maybe i was right?! they aren't my favourite all-time band,
that'd have to be Vince Clarks in all his many projects (depeche, yazoo,
the assembley & erasure) but they must be in my top 10 at least.
anyways, maybe first impressions do make the biggest mark. RoY marked me.

Subject: (hats) List revival techniques
Hello peoples with no hats but wear 'em anyway becuase we can dance if we
want to,
(Ok so that wasn't very funny) Yes, this list died in a big way. I don't
reember it being caused by Stefan's outburst about the bootlegs. The list
was very, very quiet way before then. And since then, it peaked a little
once in a while. I think the problem at hand is no oen has anything to say
:) Or maybe, the majority of users don't have the same amount of time to
read and write e-mail as before. I'm like that.... :(
So, onto some of the topics discussed so far...
I've never consciously thought of which songs meant the most to me....but I
think the entire Pop Goes The world album stands out in this respect. The
songs provide a very vivid image in my mind when I listen to them. "O Sole
Mio", although most likely having nothing to do with the song's meaning,
gives me the impression of not being able to tell someone what you want to
say. And Ivan's voice sounds very majestic so it makes it feel that he's
trying his best to get his message across but just can't do it. Ok, so he's
singing about the environment....:) As for the CDs, I have no fear in
saying I'm sure there are a few on this list happy enough to make cds for
those who don't have any. It happens on all mailing lists and between
fellow fans off the Internet. I don't mean to knock Stefan but since this
is the age of the mp3 and double-deck tape recorders, and cheaper
easier-to-use CD recording software/hardware...there's nothing any lawyer
can really do. No one stopped Napster yet.... So we can't askoffer CDs
publicly on the list. There's always private e-mail :) Maybe that's why
the list has been quiet! :D
The show that almost happened...well, it would have been a nice experience
if this happened. Not only seeing MWH in concert, or even just Ivan, but
also meeting so many people from this list for the first time, plus seeing
Montreal for the first time (it would have been my first time there), and I
remember an opening act would have been some members of the list jamming.
Well...why not for the record release party of the cover cd? ;)
A new topic suggestion: Which song would you like remixed? And how? :)
Right now from the top of my head I can picture, obviously, "O Sole Mio" as
well as "I Sing Last/Not For Tears", and "Walk On Water". A fast remix.
I'm sure there'd be lots more I'd love to remix but I can't think of any
actually. "Walk On Water" can be sound like the Pet Shop Boys' "Paninaro"
remix done by Tin Tin Out. Hm...not a bad idea...a remix project...not by
us though, the amount of money that was listed for sampling is too much for
me (not that I can remix anyway--I can be a consultant though!).

Yes Daniele.....
It would be an awesome thing to have a LIVE concert, Men Without Hats, with
several opening acts of artists covering M w/o H material, followed by our
own list member artists doing the same. And in the Canadian park, near the
US border, where this venue was taking place on a beautiful 2 day summer
weekend we will have the new cover CD's readily available for sale along
with all of the Men w/o Hats released CDs. And making its debut Stefan will
have a little 'Winnebago' jam packed with the newest compilation for sale
also. Ivan will also be with and he will have created a most astounding
graphic Tshirt!
A couple of list members will also provide the initial Men Without Hats hat
which rivals Ivans graphics.
It will be a 2 day event to rival almost anything you can imagine. We find
out that the M w/o H list members can throw one %@*& of a party/show.
I could probably find a park, anyone else able to provide any pieces of our
gig?
Book early space is filling up.
PS: Yes the bootlegs would be at this event too, but they would only be
discreetly available to list members.

I have to agree with ya Daniele, I think that Pop Goes The World is the best
single album that MWH put together, although Folk Of The Eighties and ROY
will always be close to my heart. But....Pop Goes The World flows together
so well and the songs are just amazing: Jenny Wore Black, Walk On Water,
The Real World, O Sole Mio, On Tuesday, The End Of The World...... they are
all perfect. In fact, I used to just lie in bed with the lights off and
crank up this album and put on the headphones and lose myself in the world
of Pop Goes The World (kinda dorky, but I was always kind of a nerd in
highschool).
Least favorite album: "Sideways", although there are tracks on this album
that I think are very good including the title track.
It's been cool seeing what some of the people have said about which
songs/albums were most meaningfull to them.
As far as the "Show That Never Happened", hmmmm....I don't think I was on
the list at the time. I would've loved to have a chance to see MWH again
(I've mentioned before that I saw them as the supporting act for
"Icehouse"). Mabey we'll have a chance to see a show like that again
someday. I'm sure that Ivan and Stefan are extremely busy.

For me, the most meaningful song is "Bright Side Of The Sun", the
reasons for this being too painful for me to go into.
I just hope that the scenario painted in that brief song comes
true for me one day.

Best album - RoY - hands down
And I agree Stephen S., Sideways was a good album, but I didn't liek it as a
MWH album...most bands change their style over time - I just didn;t like
where it ended up.

Ok... I've got TWO most meaningful songs. They'll just have to
share the damn trophy, ok?!
The winners are:
"O Sole Mio" for the "everytime I try to say the words..." and
"I'm expecting someone's love to come and hit me blindside" bits.
"In the name of Angels" for the "Johnny loves Jenny" part and also for
the girl voice-over/Ivan vocals trade-off.
- --------
Close runner up:
"I'm in Love" for the whole feeling of the lyrics.. I think about this
kid standing in the middle of the hallway sensing all this giddy
energy building up in all parts of the house, and also the highly
open-minded lyrics "let the young boys dance in twos",
"I'm in love with the boys and girls" etc.
WOW!
- ------------
A note about "Sideways".
All you people who don't like it: Listen again!
Choice tracks: "In the Meadow" and "Love all over the World"!
Pure Hats stuff!
- ------------
Did you know:
Ivan has collaborated on the VOIVOD albums "Angel Rat" and "Negatron".
Also:
Voivod's drummer Away (Michel Langevin) playd all drums on the
album "Sideways".

Personally, Sideways is my second favourite album. Follows behind PGTW,
if only because PGTW was the first music cassette that I ever bought on my
own.

Don't forget:
Jon Kastner played a whole slew of guitar on that particular album (and
showed up in the video, singing along with the chorus, and playing lots
of guitar) and regularily played with the Doughboys at the time. Who,
by the way, put out a _fantastic_ album about that time called 'Crush'.
