I guess it's because the group were always mysterious-- I don't think they
gave many interviews and that song was sung live.  Maybe just for that
concert.  I doubt interivewers asked them "oh, what was that first song you
sang at the concert?".  Maybe it was meant for "Pop Goes The World" like
how they sang "Jenny Wore Black".  The lack of replies means no one knows
what this song is.  I mean, who would hold back the response if someone
knew the answer? :)

A question I have is whatever happened to Ivan?  "Out of nowhere" he
records an album and promotes it across the country bringing back memories
of Men Without Hats and then....poof....he disappears.  Much like this
list.  Before the chatter was great and now no one's talking :(  I've heard
of lulls in a mailing list but this one's been happening forever.  So, I'll
try my best at starting up some conversation.  Usually people ask questions
like "What's your 5 favourite songs?".  I'll add a twist:  "Which song of
Men Without Hats and Ivan would you change?".  It's not necessarily a
negative question, this could be interpreted as "which song would you remix
and how?" (this is only meant for fun so please try not to write 'you must
never tamper with the originals they are fine the way they are bla bla
bla')  At the top of my head, I'd try to make "Mother's Opinion" faster
just to see how it would sound.

And on another note, I was on a job interivew and in the same building was
a french bookstore (complete with french Simpsons valentine cards and a
french Aqua biography!).  I bought a book on Quebecois slang/idioms.  It
even gives you a history of the language which I found very interesting.
Really what I wanted was a cassette course on improving listening skills!

Ummmm, I would burn the extended version of Safety Dance.  You
know, the part that goes Sssssss Aaaaaaa Ffffffff Eeeeeee etc. ad
nauseum.  I like the short version much better.

And for Cocoricci, Le Tango des Voluers I would have added the
verses in English, like Billy Joel did for You Were the One (on
Glass Houses).

Of course, the originals are masterpieces and should not be
tampered with.  I AM KIDDING!  I said that just for Daniele, to put a
smile on his face!  :-)

So much to choose from, it's a tough question to answer, but for the
sake of reviving the list, I'll try. :)

The song I would most likely change would be "Cocoricci (Les Tango Des
Voleurs)" from _Rythem of Youth_. A full 77 minute extended version on one
cd.  This is a great studying/nap/driving/working-to song and I could
easily listen to it as background music all day.  Oddly, it is not my
favorite song, however I cannot see a bass-n-drum remix or cover of
"Antarctica"  or "I Like".  It just wouldn't do. :) So a full cd version
of "Cocoricci (Les Tango Des Voleurs)" will have to be it.  And those of
you who feel that this is too long, listen to the full version of "Thick
as a brick" or Eno's "Thursday Afternoon". Length is no factor to a song,
unless you don't want it to end.

Don't know if I'd necessarily change it, but  the refrain "Here Come the 90s"
is running a little short here in 1999.  Its still a great song, but maybe it
should be "There goes the 90s" and let it experience a revival.  Its kind of
like how I now feel silly singing one of my very favorite songs: "80s" by
Killing Joke...

    As far as altering some songs for remixes:

I like the Washington Live "I Got the Message" where towards
the end of the song it is just ivan and 1 keyboard. I think if they would
have done that live more...that would've been great.

If Living in China was faster (like it is in I think the Washington Live
one) I would like it better. He uses more melisma in the live version and
the song is alot quicker

I would like to hear more Ivan and the piano like "I Sing Last/Not for
Tears"

The Montreal live version of I Like: I wish the orignal had the beginning
part that the live one does.

Any comments on these comments???

I too would like to experiment a bit with "Mother's Opinion".  I like
the way it reaches a climax with those pitch-shifting backup vocals
chanting with Ivan's "Sounds familiar - but it doesn't sound the
same...".  But imagine if a whole choir joined in, and then the full
fury of an orchestra crashed down on the mix along with a dozen kettle
drums fortifying that hypnotic beat; hundreds, thousands of instruments
chanting that droning melody...

Ok, maybe it's a bit much, but that's what I'd try.

BTW, does anyone know what synths MWH used in the 80's?

My name is Steve Sundstrom.  I've been subscribing to the MWH mailing list
since about March '99, and haven't posted any comments yet, but I guess it's
better late than never.  I have been reading the debate about the song
"Heaven" by MWH, and although I don't know the answer to where the song
originated, I was wondering if anybody had thought about e-mailing Stefan
Doroschuk of MWH and asking someone that I'm sure would know the answer.  A
few months ago, someone posted a link to the "official" MWH site that is
actually hosted by Stefan.  The link to the page is
http://www.mpgang.com/mwhmain.html .  I visited the page and Stefan has a
link on the page where you can e-mail him directly with questions.  I
e-mailed him with a question, and he replied within a day or so.  Needless
to say I was very impressed.

As to the question about what MWH song I would change, I would have to say
that I would change 21st Century Safety Dance off of the album "In the 21st
Century".  I was quite dissappointed by this song, as it is more or less a
"techno" song and doesn't really have much harmony.

To tell you a little bit about myself, I had always known about MWH from
their song "The Safety Dance", but wasn't a huge fan of MWH until around
1986 when Pop Goes The World was released, which I believe is probably their
best work.  MWH actually came to Utah, which is where I live, on a tour as
the opening act for Icehouse, who was promoting their "Man of Colors" album.
As much as I like Icehouse, MWH was a far better act to see and stole the
show.

Anyways, sorry for dragging on for so long.

This question is interesting, I have to put in my two cents.
On the Rhythm of Youth LP, I would have definitely put the entire version of
"Ban The Game,"  like they did at Le Spectrum.  It is such a tease to hear
only the beginning of that song, I have felt that way long before I ever
heard the rest of it.
On the Folk Of The 80's Part III LP I would have re-mixed "Mother's Opinion"
to be a little bit faster and a little more melodic ... maybe cut out some of
that heavy background noise and brought up the piano.
On the Pop Goes The World LP, I would change nothing except the album cover.
For some reason I always thought that their choice of design was a poor
marketing decision, and as a result this masterpiece album was terribly
underrated and under-sold.
As far as In The 21st Century goes, this entire album is poorly mixed.  I
would have put much more emphasis on Ivan's voice, which is so far in the
background that something seems so wrong with that album. Men Without Hats's
greatest assets were always Ivan's voice and their emphasis on a strong
melody line.
This album showed neither.
I wish I had heard more songs that featured Ivan alone on piano or acoustic
guitar.  I think that would have lent itself well to their labeling
themselves as "folk musicians" of the 80's. Synthesizers are all well and
good, but their heavy usage was an 80's music trend, whereas pianos and
acoustic guitars never go out of style.

I wouldn't characterize synthesizers as an 80's trend, considering how
synthetic much of the music of the  90's has been.  However, the 80's
certainly contained a lot of that primitive, bright synthetic sound as
opposed to the 'hip' warm morphing synth sounds and breakbeats that are
so overused these days IMHO.  I prefer the pure clean sterile synths
found in Kraftwerk, Numan, and, of course, MWH!

But I agree; Ivan's voice and contemplative piano melodies really work
well together.

"Heaven" is on boot number 2, "Freeways Live 1985".

I love it!

Unfortunately, the Hats MP3 web page was taken down a while ago, so you
can't easily get the MP3 version.  There may be other list members who have
the MP3 locally, but I do not.  My version is on Audio CD, which I got from
Richard Holdman ([e-mail] is the last e-mail address I have
for him).  I do not know if he is still producing them, or if he has any
available.

I don't even know if he is still on this list, since we haven't heard
anything from him since last December...

Hi everyone,

I think the "remixes" so far are great!  A 77-minute version huh?  Nic
eidea but 77 minutes? I think I can go as long as 40 minutes listening to a
song (can you tell I'm an Orb fan?).  Someone, I forget who--I'm sorry!,
mentioned Ivan's voice goes well with a piano.  It gave me an idea of a
version of "I Like" just a piano and Ivan singing of course.  The piano
would be fast, with lots of bass.

Whatever happened to the fan-made cover album?  I think some of these remix
ideas would be so cool for it.
