Hi Fellow Hatters!
I promised I'd update the list on the Research Trianlge (NC) chapter
of the MWH fan club meeting. It will be this Friday, March 20th, at
the Chili's on Kildare Farm Road in Cary, at 11:30. If anyone is
planning on popping in to North Carolina for the day, stop on by!
We'll be the loud, rowdy ones wearing MWH T-shirts. For those who
can't make it, we'll fill you in on all the gory details next week.
:-)
Update on T-shirt re-orders . . . Still trying to get them to call
me back. I'll be charitable and suggest that the sales rep might be
on vacation. Hope to know more soon!
:-) Laura

I caught the Safety Dance video on VH-1 tonight. I had always wanted to see
it with the little pop-up facts on it. I still love that video, power line
and all.
It was funny because tonight when I noticed it turned 8:30, I immediately
turned on the TV and flipped to VH-1.
And the first thing they showed was Men Without Hats, so my mother thought it
was a little suspicious!!! She knows how much I have always loved them.
She said, " That's a little strange!!! How did you know that was going to
be on????"

Last night I recorded the VH1 Safety Dance Pop-Up Video.
Hopfully in the next few weeks it will be on my site at
http://www.holdman.com/mwh
The file size will be around 45-50 meg. The video will also go onto
the MWH semi-interactive CD-ROM that I will be making and offering
to MWH fans on the list. I plan on putting all 5 CD boots in mp3
format on the disc along with some videos, pictures, and whatever
will fit on it.
If you have any ideas on the CD-ROM please let me know.

Unrelated to the Hats but not to the spirit...
Does anybody else on this list have surviving tapes of their favourite
local pop radio stations recorded in the 1980s? I have recorded the
radio on a fairly regular basis since 1979 and have an incredible collection
of such tapes now. Recently I've been compiling them to (NTSC) VHS HiFi
videotapes with lengths ranging from 4-8 hours each. I have also begun to
make the indices for these compilations available online at my website.
Right now, though, there is only a small fraction of my full collection
available to be browsed. I will working feverishly ove rhte next few days to
oops/ over the next few days to get all of the indices online.
Anyway, I'm interested in trading copies of my tapes for similar tapes
made by others from other locations. It seems that I have a severe lack
of radio from the 1982-1983 era.
To see what I've got online so far, point your browser (very carefully, please!(to :
http://people.delphi.com/mykec/index.htm
Click on the first Acid Purple Flower that you see.
Then click on "My Radio Waves Museum".
Thanks all for putting up with me off-topic post!

I'd use the phrase 'carefully' for recording stuff at gigs. If you
really do have to do it and dont mind the risk of having your stuff taken
off you then get a fairly decent mic - stereo or mono (mono at gigs is
better than a cheap stereo) and get as close to the mixing desk (US ppl
call it a board) as the guys who mix the gig usually mix it for that
point of the hall... I started to record a Howard Jones gig that way,
but was caught and invited to use a spare set of outpust on the desk, and
actualy met Howie afterwards...
If you can't risk loosing your gear - dont do it!

I have exactly the opposite reaction- I think "The Spell" is far and away
the best song on the album.

Which _I_ find amusing, since IMO "Forever" is the "standout track" on the
album - nothing else really compares (closest is Open Your Eyes, with The
Spell somewhere behind that).
But I note that Daniele wrote "in the category it was nominated for".. I
don't know what that category is, so if that limits the range of songs
that "qualify"......
Incidentally, my college a cappella group "The Amateurs" will be
performing Forever at our annual concert two days from now. I'll see what
I can do about getting a recording of it and passing it on :)
(For those who joined in the last 6 months or so, The Amateurs have
released a CD with 16 studio-recorded tracks, including Ban the Game
(short) and Where To ( :) ) The Boys Go?. Let me know if you're
interested.)
Take care,
Woody

Ok... for the performance we have CD writers, minidisc recorders, DAT
machines, an opening act or two, a DJ, someone to videotape the event, and a
Q&A segment. I say we get someone else with a video camera and....make a
movie! Abba did it, the Beatles did it, heck even the Spice Girls.
We can have it based on a bunch of mailing list members travel to Montreal
(the rest of Canada, US, even Europe!). Skits with carpooling. the huge
group of us on a rampage to all the record stores to find their CDs. Me
trying to speak French but accidentally cause some sort of unity riot.
Somehow we'll find a plot. In between, we'll have clips of Ivan's
performances at the private concert. And we'll all wear the MWH t-shirts.
Ivan went to film school didn't he? I'm sure he won't mind editing the film
and releasing it in the local theatres :)
Actually, the film would be better if the concert was during the St. Jean
Baptiste festival. That way, we can wear blue MWH shirts and totally blend
in with the crowd! We can have cameos too.
We can call it...um...."Ivan the movie" or "Men Without Hats--The Movie" or
"Hatworld".
Following the Men Without Hats style, the dialogue in the film will be half
French and half English.

I am sorry that I accused the Junos being fixed without any reasons to back
me up :)
A friend of mine is in the music business (kinda, he's a DJ but he goes to
all the conferences etc and meets all the people on the inside). He told me
some stories he heard (basically he put 2 and 2 together).
What happened was a performer did not win best dance artist or something 2
years ago. He is on the board of the Junos or something like that or the
head of a big dance music record label (I forget which). He got realy angry
and blasted the Junos. So suddenly, he wins the following year even though
his song was from the previous year (!) and the single he was up against
(only 2 were nominated) was number 1 for an eternity. That's why I think
they are fixed. I mean, "The Spell" gets nominated when it wasn't
released?! Everyone knows "Open Your Eyes" and "Superbadgirls" is always on
the radio. I think "the Spell" wasn't even released on promo-only 12" either.
In my opinion, I think all award shows are fixed in one way or another (gee,
I wonder what movie will get a million awards?). Especially the music ones
:( I won't get into this because this is the Men Without Hats mailing list :)

I can't say that I'm part of that 'we' although I am also a member of
this mailing list. I don't know about other list members, but this
seems a little restrictive and 'elitist' to me.
Just because some fans may not yet have stubled across this list, or may
not have access to e-mail, I can't see it hurting to give the show a
little more promotion. I wouldn't suggest putting ads in local
newspapers about the show, but slightly expanding the potential audience
wouldn't be a terrible thing in my mind.
Dave, I'm not sure of how many copies of your magazine go out, but I
can't imagine that it would add very many people to the show.
Considering that people would have to be in the Montreal area, or
willing to travel great distances to see this particular show. I'm near
Toronto which is about a six or seven hour drive, not that far in the
big scheme of things and I haven't been able to decide whether to go or
not yet myself.
Could the article not mention the mailing list to get further
information?
Just my two cents,
Ralph

All the nominations are based on what is proposed by the record industry.=
If
The Spell is up, it's because it's the song that was proposed by TOX reco=

But are you sure it is not the album that is in nomination?

OOPS! I did not mean to imply that "The Spell" wasn't a good song or the
others I listed were better. I only meant that "The Spell" was nominated in
the dance single category. I hardly refer to "The Spell" as a dance song :)

just wondering.... did anyone else know that the safety dance video is a
representation of the typical wiccan/pagan beltane (mayday) ceremonies?- they
do a parade every year in padstow, england. they have the hobby horse, Punch
(played in the video by stefan, i believe), (his stick is known as "the tease
or tease stick) and the morris dancers. oh yeah- and all the traditional
beltane masques so many folks are wearing. and i am sure you've all long
since noticed the punk rockers just hanging around in the background. just
wondering if anyone knew.......
