I have located a used copy of "In The 21st Century" on CD at a local
record shoppe here in Tulsa. I don't remember if it's out of print now
or not, but if anybody's needing a copy I'll be happy to get it and mail
it to them if you send me a check first to cover the costs. The price on
the disk is $13.98 which I thought was extremely steep for a used disk
but I think the woman who owns and runs the place, Rita, knows what she's
got in that one. I already have it and don't really care for it, so I
didn't get buy it when I saw it, but if anybody else is hard up enough
to be willing to pay that much for it plus shipping, I just wanted to
let you know it's available.

Hey... I'm Aaron... I'm currently studying art in SF...
I don't really know that much about Men Without Hats beyond their
singles... I recently heard Pop Goes the World again, and, basically I
want every remix I can find of it... and while I'm at it I might as well
try to listen to some of their other stuff, too...
Guess that's it... too brief? too long? oh well...

If there are a bunch of people going to Montreal (which there
are..i was just prefacing my comment)...then we could stay at a youth
hostel.
The Auberge de Junesse (I don't know French at all so this is
probably spelled incorrect) is a hostel a block from the Molsen Center
(where the Canadians play).
I know that they have room deals there...like if you get 4 or more
people to a room...the price drops dramatically. For one person, it is $17
Canadian dollars a night. They have rooms for 8 and I think 12 people.
What do you guys think of this?

hey hatters:)
Laura, there is NO age requirement for staying at a hostel...i would consider
this myself, if i wasn't staying for so long so have so much with me *i don't
like the thought of having to lock my stuff in a locker every single day for 3
weeks!* therefore, i am attempting to go the `b-n-b' route...should have some
decent quotes shortly...man, i wish that there was a small cottage i could
rent for about $450/mo...that would be so cool:)
but there ya go:) as far as i know, people of ALL ages stay at hostels:)

As far as I know, they don't actually put an age limit on those who can stay
in one. They're geared toward young travelers but if you're in your 30's
they're not going to
turn you away on that basis.

basically a representation of the typical wiccan/pagan beltane (mayday)
ceremonies?- they do a parade every year in padstow, england. they have the
hobby horse, Punch (played in the video by stefan, i believe), (his stick is
known as "the tease or tease stick) and the morris dancers. oh yeah- and all
the traditional beltane masques so many folks are wearing. and i am sure
you've all long since noticed the punk rockers just hanging around in the
background. just wondering if anyone knew.......

Hatters,
Could someone tell me how far it is from the Montreal Airport to the downtown
area where the MWH show will be? In some cities, it costs $20 each to get to
the city from the airport. Anyone want to carpool from the airport and then
back after the weekend?
Also, has it been confirmed that the show will be the same weekend as the Jazz
Fest?

First for the hostel: in Ireland, last Fall, I was in a youth hostel with a
very fine german couple; but they were about 60! So, in all major hostels,
age is not a criteria anymore. It is more a matter of taste, and money as
well... I've been told by a few travellers I know that it is often more fun
in those hostels since you can meet people more easily. I will check how it
is exactly in Montreal.
Second: from the Dorval airport (all of you coming by plane should land
there, since Mirabel, the other airport far from Montreal, is now dedicated
to charters - lucky you!), it is 35$ CAN MAXIMUM (more around 20$ I think)
for the ride to downtown Montreal, but I think they have a fixed rate. I'll
check that in the next cab I'll take. This price is for the ride, no matter
how many you are to get on the cab. You can also use a special luxury bus
service
for less, or even the city bus, for less than 2$. So if you don't have a lot
of stuff and/or money, this solution is the cheapest. The bus will take you
to the
subway. From there, you can go anywhere downtown Montreal. The "Auberge de
Jeunesse" (Collin, you were almost right! ;-) ) is located at the
Bonaventure Station, wich is on the same subway line that the one the
airport's bus will take you to. So you can be there in an hour or so, quite
easily, for 1.85$ to be exact. May I say, at the risk of sounding a little
bit like a travel agent, that even though common sens is "de rigueur" like
in any big city, public transportation in Montreal are perfectly safe, as is
the downtown area. As safe as the MARTA, Brad... ;-)
If you fellows have a few questions about Montreal, I can check some stuff
around. So go ahead and post your question to the list (so the same
questions won't be asked over and over) this week, I will try (and be
pleased) to gather informations next week-end. I'll post the answers to the
list as well. I already had a few questions about B&B, etc. Please note,
however, that I will not book rooms, etc. But I can give phone numbers,
prices, and so. Also, it could be possible for me to be at the airport at
your arrival, depending when will be your flight of course. Could be useful,
for example, if it is your first time in Montreal: I could help a little bit
for directions, etc.
And Happy St-Patrick's Day to our Irish friends...!

Just to clear up information on youth hostels:
They began to flourish in the time of the 50's and 60's with
Kerouak and the beat generation. The reason they were named youth
hostels...was because they attracted mainly youths. Now, the hostel
doesn't descriminate...it doesn't matter how old you are...just that you
have money.

in any case, i did not mean that comment as a slight against others on the
list who would be considering this option; i am merely remembering some
literature on a hostel pamphlet that specifically states that it is a good
precaution to lock items up when away....don't get your jockeys in a bunch,

Subject: (hats) introduction
Hello!
I am Klaus from Germany! I am new to this list.
Men Without Hats has been one of my first bands I ever listened to. 'Rhythm
of youth' was the first album I bought, that's 15 years ago. I have been
with this band from the beginning(almost).
I loved "Folk of the 80s III" when it was released back in '84. (I am a
proud owner of the original CD-release of Folk of the 80's III) Three hard
years followed, while I thought, MWH had split up. Then PGTW appeared. It
was like a resurrection.
21st Century was another masterpiece. Sideways: I still don't know what I
should think of it. 'Everybody wants to know' surely is one of the most
beautiful songs I know.
I had lost track of MWH for quite some time. Then I found this list. It is
good to know, that there are still many people interested in MWH.
I haven't got Ivan's new album, but I know, I have to get it.
Klaus

Hey Myke (from Pig Pen), Tom, Richard, or anyone who may be reading this and
have some expertise. What is the procedure for showing up at a concert and
making a boot? I won't have access to actual connections, so how is this
done? Does one buy a nice minidisk recorder? Is there a mic that plugs in
so that you could run one down each arm for stereo? How far do you stay
from the stage? Any and all ideas would be appreciated, or any sources on
the web would be great as well.
Cordially,
Rush

on his shoulders--what would you tell him to do?"

I was listening to the PGTW album this morning, when I noticed that a
lot of
MWH songs could sound really good -and VERY powerful- when played by a
full
orchestra, with real strings, brass section, etc. Am I in the twillight
zone???

Subject: (hats) Pop Up Video
I just saw Safety Dance on Pop Up Video! It's Eight Days of Eighties
week, and today's Pop Up focused on dancing. I wish I had
been able to tape it, but I was visiting my parents' house.
For those who haven't seen it, Pop Up Video is a half-hour program on
VH1. They show a video, and pop up bits of information during the song,
sometimes informative, sometimes irreverent.
My favorite bit was at the very beginning, when Ivan and the dwarf first
appear. They point to Ivan and pop up "Man without hat." Then they point
to the dwarf and pop up "Man without height." A close second place was
shortly after, when they point to the dwarf and pop up "Medieval
jester," and when the girl pops into the scene with her goofy grin, they
point to her and pop up "Medieval fool."
They mention a few interesting tidbits, like Ivan's birthday is October
9, 1957. And the video was shot in one day in England, and the rest of
the band couldn't be there because they were in New York rehearsing for
either a tour or a recording -- I forget which. And Ivan founded the
band in '80, and the band name "just came to him."
There was the speculation that the song was about safe sex, since "jimmy
hat" was one of the many slangs for condom at the time, and people could
no longer dance in the sheets safely without hats without fear of AIDS
and other various diseases.
Then at the end of the video, they mention that Ivan now dances alone,
because the success of the song caused the band to get too greedy, and
they broke up shortly after. So their info is definitely not completely
correct, but it was great to see the video getting the treatment.
As a good running gag, the next video was The Hooters' "And We Danced."
They pointed to a concessions vendor wearing a hat and popped up "Man
with hat."

The Moody Blues made a killing with the orchestra bit, and it sounds
wonderful, even at Red Rocks....

Sorry for that. I meant it to be taken lightly. In my media writing

looking for controversy now.
