Subject: (hats) SURVEY FINALITIES
Well, to all of you who have taken part in my MWH favorite line survey, I
salute you (hats off to you all!). I am now tallying up the results, and
will have the final #1 favorite line by either the end of the day, or
early tomorrow morning. IF you haven't emailed me with your favorite line
from a MWH song, you still have a chance to do so, just make it snappy.
You might get lucky, and your vote might get here in time.
Take it easy,
Nathan

Heaven 17 were half of the Human League back in the early days - '78 -
before the League did Dare (yup - they actually did some great stuff
pre-Dare - Empire State Human/Being Boiled etc). They also did loads of
work for others (as in the main text) and helped Tina Turner back on
track... Never heard of any Ivan connection
BEF - a great label helping some great music get noticed... OBTW their
last CD was OK actually, 'Bigger Than America" is pretty good...

From: "Trena Brantley" <Trena_Brantley@ncsu.edu>
Subject: (hats) the story of my life...
Hi,
I'm Trena Brantley, the other chic on the IVAN video tape with Dr.
Laura, Dave, Tom, and Claude in Montreal. I work with Laura, so when
the opportunity came for us to drive 17 hours one way to see Ivan
live in Montreal I said, "Cool, let's go." One of the most humorous
moments on our trip occured at the lovely fondue restaurant we dined
in before the concert. A lady of middle age years (I'm 31)
approached me cautiously as we all began to leave the restaurant.
In anticipation of the show, my brain was only still slightly connected
to my body after just having spent the afternoon talking to Ivan and
Colin and company and after seeing the great sound check. The lady
asked me what my shirt meant, and I attempted to explain that we were
members of a fan club (so to speak) for a band called Men Without
Hats. Like a silly goof, I thought she could put 2 and 2 together,
noting the symbols on the shirt. No, I was wrong. She shook her
head, "No." Then I explained each symbol carefully one by one. "It's
a man wearing a hat and a 'NO' symbol over top, see?" "No," she
shook her head again. Was I speaking some foreign language? Was I
suddenly speaking in tongues at the thought of seeing Ivan perform on
stage again? I repeated myself. Obviously, some alien had taken
over my body. "Well, what's that?" she asked, pointing to the head
outline on the shirt. "It's a man," I said, repeating my above
statement again. Again, she shook her head, not understanding, as
she wandered back to her table.
Perhaps there's an alien abduction story at the heart of this that
I may one day discover in deep hypnosis. Perhaps this is an X-files
waiting to happen.
Aside from MWH and IVAN, I'm heavily into Japan, David Sylvian,
Jansen and Barbieri, Mick Karn, Peter Murphy/Bauhaus, China Crisis,
Chris Connelly, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates (don't tell anyone I
told you this), Icehouse, Killing Joke, Gary Numan, Talk Talk,
Ultravox, and Midge Ure to name the most important names in my
collection.
I love literature, especially Medieval (my master's thesis was on
Chaucer), Victorian, and (gasp) some science fiction, and I have an
unnatural love for Doctor Who (again, don't you tell anyone this). : )
I also love creative writing and spend most of my life writing and
editing stuff--from boring technical manuals to my own atrocious
attempts at the great American novel.
Whew!!! That's a lot about me. I guess I'm saying a lot because I
usually lurk a lot and don't have a lot to say, but I'm still here
reading and looking forward to my next close encounter. ; )

having a tough time finding either one, send me an email and I'll see what
I can do for you.

Check out the text in the Greatest Hats CD, its mentioned in there.
I don't mean the English band Heaven 17, but they are not bad either.

Cameron Campbell. Natural Historian. North American. Have been a hats
fan since their early days. Well, at least since "The Safety Dance"
made it's appearance. I find the music of MWH to be exceptional in both
instrumentation and lyric. The songs have real MEANING, and sound GREAT
too! Other bands "I like": Ultravox, Icehouse, Naked Eyes, Saga, The
Fixx, The Cars, Kraftwerk. It is "the electronic sound" which most
interests me musically.
MWH has such an amazing quality of rhythm! True art! Very unique!
Favorite Song? I just can't decide on any particular one!
"We can dance if we want to" what a great philosophy!
Before I found this mailing list, the amount of MWH material I was able
to find was meager. That's all changed now. I am very grateful to all
those here who have helped me acquire so much that was otherwise " not
possible to get"! THANKS

1. How can I get a copy of the new 2fer(I looked on every page in

2. How can I get copies of the fan made discs 1-7
3. I have a cd copy of FOTE and was wondering how many were produced?
Jeeze...for a new guy I sure talk alot and ask alot of questions!
Well thanx for listening and I look foward to talking to you all!
P.S. I am also a D.J. here in Florida spining only 80's new wave, and

Subject: (hats) bio- new member
Hello! My name is Mike. I'm 29 and have recently rediscovered hats.
I loved the Safty Dance and PGTW etc. when they were released. I
bought these albums after hearing these played on the air. I hate to
admit it but outside of a very few tunes I did'nt much care for hats.
I thought Ivan had a terrible voice then. Ok, Ok, I'll say it- Iwas
brainwashed by the "top 40".
About 7 years ago I got way into Bob Marley and I still have a great
passion for his and Ziggy's music (and a few other reggae artists).
Good reggae, however, is getting harder to come by and this brought
me back to hats.
I began searching for hats and realized quickly that this wasn't
easy. When I began listening to hats again I realized there was an
immense artistic genius (I mean that) that in my younger years I had
completely overlooked. I would now argue that Ivan has the greatest
voice this genre has ever witnessed.
But, enough about me! Too much? Anyway, I am desperately seeking
the "2fer" and if anyone could help me out I would be extremely
grateful. Also, could someone explain to me what the bootlegs
contain? They sound like something I wouldn't want to be without.
Thanks for hearing me out!
P.S.- If you're interested in reaching me, I''m
at: slhj3@cc.usu.edu
I would love to hear from you.

CD#2 - Spectrum - concert (1985 Montreal concert)
CD#3 - Toronto - concert (1983 CFNY radio broadcast)
CD#4 - BBC live LP - 6 songs (from 1984 WDTBG tour) + Winnebago song (20min
- - [sounds like Ou sont mes men])
-- in progress--
CD#5 - MWH Demos - Roy demo tape + Folk III Rehearsal tape (earliest
session)
CD#6 - in progress
CD#7 - in progress
OK thats it.
everything is very good near CD quality. except CD#3 which needs Dolby A
NR decoding, therefore it has a little tape hiss. Can anyone do this?
OK thats all the CDs.
I will try and make some more this week.
In the meantime, Richard Holdman is taking over for a bit. By the way, for
complete track lists of the 4 CDs that are already done, check out the MWH
MP3 site. If you have an MP3 player (WinAmp, MacAmp) you can actually
listen to a few of the songs. Then you can determine how good the quality
is of each for yourself.
http://www.holdman.com/mwh/
enjoy!
I will let all of you know as soon as I receive CDs 4,6,7
