Subject: (hats) Different Safety Dance on UK ROY
Greetings Hatters.
Everyone seems to be introducing themselves, so I'll do likewise. I'm 29,
married, childless. I live in San Jose, California. I write code for a
living. No programs you've heard of, unless you're into influence diagrams
or decision trees.
I've been listing to men w/o hats since those heady days of the early 80's
when you could hardly turn on MTV without seeing that safety dance video
(all I remember is wrapping ribbons around a pole). As soon as I got the
album I realized that safety dance was at best par among their other songs,
and became a fan. Ironically, I don't like to dance.
I play keyboards in a casual garage band. I've been trying to get the
band to play safety dance for years, but the other members don't share my
taste ("It's Junior High Bubble Gum Rock" -- maybe so, but it sure is
good). The band consists of a lead singer, a bassist, a drummer, a
keyboardist (me) and four (4) guitarists. It has an institutional bias
toward "three chord rock" songs, especially those with many guitar solos.
My favorite hats song is "Things in My Life". My hat-oriented friends and
I celebrate the 14th of november. I think of the first four full length
albums (I don't have sideways -- need to start harassing my canadian
friends) as being almost equally good, although if I had to choose a
favorite it would be folk of the 80s pt III.
This is probably a faq, but I haven't seen it discussed in the few months
I've been reading this list so here goes. How many versions of safety
dance were released? I know there is the version on ROY that became
popular in the US, the similar extended dance version, and at least one
other.
I have two copies of ROY on vinyl. One is "1983 Backstreet Records"
(USA), and the other is "1982 Statik Records" (UK). The two records are
about 90% alike (the UK version has living in china instead of antarctica,
and a slightly more colorful cover). Safety dance on the UK record is
much shorter (2:44 rather than 4:32, acording to the labels) and in my
opinion much better. It doesn't spell out the word safety, it lacks that
two c's an octave apart keyboard riff, and it has some melodic parts that
are either not present on the US version or are mixed real soft. Whereas
the US version seems dominated by bass and percussion, the UK version is
more balanced between instruments and perhaps less dancable.
I originally bought the UK import largely because my US ROY was worn out
(played too many times on a turntable with a heavy arm and a lousy
needle). The different version of safety dance was a bonus.

I think it will be rerun at around midnight, so for those of you who get

My name is Alain, from Montreal, Qc. 28. I've been a pleased listener of MWH
since the beginning in the early '80s. I played music for a long time, mainly
saxophone, but also keyboards, where MWH definitely had a strong influence.
Now I gave it up, using my spare time on my other hobby, photography.
I have a master degree in Communication Sciences, specialized in multimedia

my first reaction would be 'no' as they're still available from Tox so
what we would be doing is _definately_ illegal. For stuff that aint

As far I'm concern, I'm taking care of Ivan's private show. The last news I

If you want someone else to take care of this show, PLEASE leave me a message.

The ONLY Heaven 17 I know is the (late 70s) and 80s band (who are
still together) who did a lot of dance music. They're Brits. Before
they were Heaven 17, they were British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.)
Their first singers included Adi Newton (who left to form Clock DVA) and
then there was Phil Oakey (now of the Human League). Since the first lp,
the band has consisted of three members; Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh,
and Glenn Gregory, who has been the lead singer ever since. The same
guys, calling themselves B.E.F. did a lot of production work in the
early 80s, but I can't think of Ivan ever working with them. My
brother (who is a huge fan of H17) and I were in their fan club for
years (throughout the 80s) and we corresponded with the guys (very,
very nice folks) for a long time. They even sent us a picture of
themselves with a picture of us and our dog! Well, it was cute at
the time.
I hope this helps. Does anyone know of Ivan ever working with H17?
If so, please let me know and I'll see what I can find out from H17.
I haven't mailed them in years.
Sorry about the nonIvan content.

It's not that wqeird Aaron! The spoken verses are definately similar to
Security. (Not to mention the subject of being insecure with a persons own
personality) It's my guess that Ivan decided Gravity didn't quite express his
idea clearly enough and reworked it into Security. (a thing I had to do a few
times throughout my own songwriting.)
So far, out of the demos, I like "Rhythm of Youth" and "Treblinka" the most.
Rhythm seems to be a transitional song between the style of FOTE and ROY.
Treblinka reminds me of David Bowies latest single "I'm Afraid Of Americans".
Both Treblinka and Bowie's song express a fear or concern of the mentality of US
culture. And of course with the latest fasination concerning Clinton's
sexcapades rising to the point where it's impeding the nations business, you

That's my guess, too. Even before I paid attention to the lyrics, the
music sounded almost identical to me. I considered it more of a sister
song than a precursor, although Steve is probably right.

Well, let's see, I'm an over-20 year old almost done University
student/staff member. Been listening to MWH since PGTW. Bought
the cassette the day I heard PGTW for the first time in fact. I
tend towards industrial and goth music, and host a show on the
local campus radio station (CFRC-FM) here in Kingston. I actually
featured a MWH spotlight on a fill-in show over the X-Mas holidays,
so I guess that's my MWH link. *grin*
Anyhow, for more information on me, fun web toys, and information

Hey all.... I got this interview clip on tape on Sunday.. they
announced Pop Goes the World was coming up after Dexy's Midnight
Runners... and then suddenly comes on a 1-2 minute interview clip of
Ivan sitting with the Bonhomme from the PGTW video. Then they showed
the video. If anyone really wants this interview clip (it's rather
short) just email me and we'll work something out. :)
This is my first post ever to the list.... just joined a month ago...
I've somewhat liked MWH for a long time (since Pop Goes the World).
I travelled to Montreal in December for a Duran Duran concert (my
favorite group) and was treated to a great opening act... Ivan! :) I
bought "The Spell" the next day... and now here I am. Brief info: My
name is Colin McLeod, 23 years old...I live in New Brunswick (Canada).
I guess that would be my introduction.
Colin
ps - I made an attempt to tape Ivan's performance (on audio) at the
concert in Montreal at the Metropolis.... it didn't turn out as good as
I hoped... but if any of you hardcore fans don't mind audience
recordings I can make copies. He did an amazing version of PGTW! And
also a cover of Oasis' Wonderwall... also Safety Dance, Superbadgirls,
Open Your Eyes, and 1 or 2 other songs. He was on stage for 30 minutes.
I wish my recording was better, but it's better than nothing.

I don't know which is my most favourite but I always found "Walking in
Scotland through a forest in the rain" (I haven't listened to the song in a
while so I might have it mixed up). I always thought this line was so
detailed.
Not only was I walking through the forest, but it was in Scotland AND it was
raining :)

Subject: RE: (hats) Heaven 17 and Ivan
I read an interview with Heaven 17 not long after Temptation was a
massive hit for them, in fact they were actually reviewing the records
of
the week.
One of these records was I Got The Message by you know who.
One of them, Martin Ware I think, said "This band used be to be called
Heaven 17 you know", to which Glenn Gregory replied "I wouldn`t have
changed names to Men Without Hats!". They didn`t like the single
either.
So there you go - Men Without Hats came about because another group got
to the name Heaven 17 first - both bands obviously liked A Clockwork
Orange.
This happened to a number of bands during the 80`s and is probably still
going on all over the place.
