Hi,
I'm Dave, I edit and publish a little magazine about music and bands
from the 1980's. This is a good time to say that issue #6 is ALMOST
DONE! (Honest! I saw the blueline copy Monday). It will feature
interviews with ABC, (yeah!), Heaven 17, A Flock of Seagulls, Ric Ocasek
and Peach Union, plus a nice discography on Toyah!
I love to (try and ) follow all the threads here. Any news on Ivan and
MWH is always welcome (and usually ends up in Lexicon!)
If you want more info, like subscription information (Spam! alert!)
please email me directly.

Subject: (hats) Bio...
Hi, Hatters!
Especially for our new members, here is my short bio...
I am Angie Tooley of northern New England, and I have been a Hats fan since
1983. In 15 years I have collected a lot of cool stuff, including the "I Got
The
Message" 45rpm picture disk. I am still influenced by the Hats sound, even
though I listen more to bluegrass, folk, and country music more than anything
else these days. (Actually, I find I have been listening to a lot of R.E.M.
lately.)
I am happily UNmarried, with no children. However I have a dog (Athena) and
a cat (Mittens) whom I love very much. I also live with my mother's Yorkshire
Terrier and Miniature Pinscher.
I have a degree in Fine Arts and one in
Business Administration, and I am going to college at night, working on a
Paralegal Certificate.
After that I will enter University for my Political Science bachelor's degree.
The ultimate goal is Law School.
I, along with a couple other list members who live in Montreal, am responsible
for
the production and organization of a proposed concert open only to "list
members"
and their friends and family. This concert will take place in June 1998, in
Montreal.
The ticket sales will pay Ivan's performance fee. Hopefully we will be able
to get
the brothers on stage with Ivan, but at any rate, it is understood that we
will be
hearing principally Men Without Hats songs.
My other interests include taking road trips to Quebec, bass fishing, playing
my
instruments, painting and drawing, driving my new car :-), and hanging out
with my
friends.
So, that's me in a nutshell! I hope to meet each and every one of you in
person
in June!!
Angie

to elaborate more on my smart-alecky answer just a few min. ago, this is
obviously not news to me (or some others!), as i used to listen to my old

to have a stereo system with both 'stereo' and 'mono' capabilities, selecting
'mono' will produce the same effect (VERY nice results with old Berlin!)

Subject: (hats) Long time fan.....
This is my first post. I am more of a reader than a writer, but here
goes....
My name is James. I am 30 year old Southern Californian. Being a fan of
MWH since 1980-81 and pre-dating the Rhythm of Youth release, I would
consider myself one of the true old timers. I was lucky enough to get
exposed to the Folk of the 80's 10" (still have it!) and have been
listening ever since. I first joined the mailing list about 2 years ago,
dropped off, then came back to find all these bootlegs ect. floating
around. That will teach me to not drop off again!
Some of the more prized MWH items include the 10" of course, the Safety
Dance picture disk 45 and the ROY picture disk LP. I would like to know
some of the items that others on the list prize most. By the way, any
ideas out there on the total number of that first 10" pressed??? I have
yet to find one again. But I would guess it can be found in the northern
USA and of course in Canada.
Well, that's about all I guess. I am married, no children. I am a
record freak, having several thousand, ranging from 78's to CD's and
Country/Bluegrass to Punk. MWH are just one spoke in the wheel of my
likes, but they hold a special place. I was just 14 when I got my first
listen to "utter space" and it opened up my world to much of the music I
enjoy today. Glad to see this group rolling along and hope it continues
to have the interest to put out the Boot's and keep the Hats alive!

Hello to all,
being new to the list, I wanted to state that I am in no way and expert on
MWH, but I did want to comment on the Ivan coffee house pen-name
performances rumored to take place in Boston. I have heard similar rumors
similar to the boston thing, such as, a seattle coffee house gig under the
same pen-name. I heard this from an aquaintence of mine, someone whom I
no longer know nor trust, but that is a different story, that Ivan was
performing right next door to a seattle club that had Pearl Jam playing
that night. The rumor goes on to say that Ivan packed his coffee house,
and Pearl Jam was standing outside trying to give away free tickets, no
one was accepting. OF course I can only assume that this took place
before pearl jam became a household name. Again, it's only a rumor, so I
wouldn't place my bets on any truth.

Hi Nick - Thought I'd be the first of the British contingent to welcome you
to the list. My name's Colin. I'm 28 and live in England about 30 miles
south of London. I am am a computer operations supervisor. I have 2 cats
and have been married for two years to a non-hatter but I'm slowly wearing
her down - she really likes The Spell!
I have been into MWH since 82/83 when a friend played me his 12" of Safety
Dance. So began my crusade of souring second hand record shops and such
like to boost my collection. MWH wares are REALLY scarce over here. Before
discovering the internet and this list especially, I had all but given up
ever hearing another Hats tune. Now I have all the albums on CD x'cept
FOT80's and also have ROY on vinyl plus several 12"s. Anyway, hope you
enjoy your time on this list - even the bickering makes good reading most of
the time!

just catching the tail end of this 'mono' stuff - what it is is that the
left and right channels are "out of phase" ie when the left has a
positive signal the right is negative so when they are added together (ie
changed from stereo to mono) some of the sound cancels itself out...
This, if the record is produced properly, shouldn't happen and is
therefore the product of some error in the recording process. When
albums are edited/mixed in 'professional' recording studios you often see
the engineer checking the mono-compatability with a cheap speaker
somewhere, usually between the main speakers, or playing the rough mix on
a cheap-and-cheerful tape player... Also most mixing desks have a 'phase
invert' switch on every channel so that if 2 tracks do cancel themselves
out you can correct the sound's phase. A very useful tip to you all (if
you're ever in a recording studio that is!!).
This problem can also occur if you record a CD to tape with cables that
are wired up incorrectly, ie one of the stereo pair is back-to-front...
End of the lesson for today
Mike }:-)

Subject: (hats) it just doesn't sound the same
Hi all,
Guess I have to share with all of you a magnific experience that occur
to me during last weekend. It was sunday, I was preparing to brush my
two cats. I had my walkman on, I Know Their Name, italian remix from the
soon to be released CD7, was playing loud and clear. As I was proceeding
in the direction of the bathroom the phone rang. My older cat is very
nervous, so he jumped betwwen my legs and I lost my equilibrium and
tried to regain balance by grabbing a nearby shelf. By doing that, I
only made a huge and almost full vaseline pot fall on my head from an
upper shelf. The put broke and the vaseline poured over my head,
covering it almost totally. Now I was not only losing my balance, but
also consciousness. So I fell to my knees, and then forward in direction
of the bath-tub. I didn't hurt myself (well...) because the bath was
full of water - I always take my bath after I brush the cats. I now had
the head, covered in vaseline and completly immerse in a body of water.
After coming to my sense, I realised my walkman was still playing
(aren't Sony great) and the music I was listening to sounded quite
different (go figure). The "MWH feel" was still there but there was
something else. I suddenly recognize it. I was hearing parts of "The
Spell", backward, with the bass almost cancelled and some extra back
vocals in chinese (female voice, almost Mitsou but two octaves lower).
Isn't it incredible! After 10 minutes it becomes even stranger (that is,
if you don't hold your breath). I repeated the experience with various
type of music. It's really nice, but a bit messy. If you want more
information on how to safely repeat this experience, e-mail me
privately.
Take care
Claude

I think we could do a song together or one each. I would absolutely LOVE
to do either a remix or a cover of "Where Do the Boys Go?" as I never have
heard a remake of that song ever - It's also so completely high energy that
it lends itself prefectly to a techno/high energy/drum & bass style redux....
Let me know what you think. I don't know if I would be allowed since I'm
not really a member of the list and I haven't had a chance to really get
involved, but it would be fun to do (and I could certainly handle the
mastering as well).
Let me know if you think I can be involved on this. I would also be
willing to do the mastering FOR FREE on a project like this, especially
since Ivan would get a copy..
Let me know..

Paul will apparently be sending me a CD-R of his own instrumental
version of "Where Do The Boys Go?". I will then listen to it with
headphones on and sing my own vocals to it onto VHS HiFi. He'll
then get my tape and will digitally record and overlay my vocal
tracks atop his original instrumental with his awesome PeeCee
and software, add some backing vocals of his own and produce a final
mix. Kewl?
He's interested in mastering the whole disk if possible.
He does that kind of work on a professional level although
he'd volunteer his services gladly for this since Ivan will
be getting a copy as well. It's a way he could finally thank
Ivan for all the great music down through the years.
I'd actually like to do a solo song too, if I can find the time.
My initial leanings are toward "Messiah's Die Young" and
/ or "Mother's Opinion" but that's just my gut instinct right now.

I once had an idea of everyone on a mailing list contributing to a cover.
for example, one person plays the piano, records it and mails the tape to
someone who plays the guitar. That person records it and mails it to
someoen who is playing the drums, and so on. One person (or morE) can do
the mixing. A bit far fetched I guess, but fun to think about! :)

Of course, Ivan songs do not count... I'm just looking for your favorite
line from a MWH song. Thank you to all who have replied so far, I know
there are a lot of you who have still not responded, so let's get
crackin'! Not to spoil a suprise, but the survey is leaning towards two
lines from the album FOTE part III. Can you imagine what they are? Also,
use survey guys were wondering if anyone had IVAN's email address, or
means of contacting him? We'd like to pass on the results....
Thanks to all,

Hi all,
Just letting you know I've completed phase one of the cover art gallery
for MWH. This includes all albums and EP's released by them, including
FOTE and Ivan's "The Spell". All are 600 X 600 pixels but I've done my
best to keep each one under 200kB without sacrificing too much quality.
The next phase will be the 12" singles and 45's.
The site is located at....

ps. Welcome all you new hatters. :) 200 hatless humans is becoming
impressive! The list has almost doubled since I joined 2 years ago. It
seems we are succeeding in spreading the word!
Keep it up, list!

From: "Tom Norman" <tnorman@mail.netwalk.com>
Subject: (hats) introduction
Hello all,
Sorry but I have been so busy this week.
My name is Tom Norman. I am 26 years old and was born in New Orleans, La.
I first heard Safety Dance in '85 (New Orleans is slow) and didn't like it.
I saw a really modern neat video on MTV around '88 and said "what's that!"
It was Men Without Hats " Pop Goes the World". I liked this one alot. One
of the few songs that I liked on the first listen in fact. I decided to
try and find the ROY CD that I saw in a record store a few years back, but
by 1989 it had been sold of course. In '85, I saw the ROY CD on display,
"CDs are here!" and remember laughing because what kind of a fool would pay
$45 for a CD.
I didn't realize how good CDs were yet, and didn't realize what an "import"
was yet.
By '89, the joke was on me, cause I couldn't find it. Luckily, I grabbed a
used copy of Pop Goes the World, got a new In the 21st CD, and found a used
ROY album. As soon as I heard Antactica and I Like, I said "WOW". Too bad
safety dance isn't that good (flame away here).
After going back into the record store one day, I was amazed to find
another white MWH album (folkIII). The guy in the store said, listen to
this one, its even better than the yellow one, and I agreed after taking it
home.
At that point, I know their name, became my favorite hats song.
by '91 or '92 I got on the GENIE hats topic followed by the mailing list
here.
I remember posting 100 times about how to find the ROY and FOLK CDs.
I also remember being really upset that the list members would not give me
a video copy of the Much Music hats spotlight. I decided around that time
that If the list members ever gained my trust, I would BE SURE to share
copies of stuff with other new members. I also made a promise to GRAB
anything hats that I saw, if not for me then for other list members.
By the way, I am one of the guys doing fan CDs and videotapes, we have 2
new people. :-)
So if you read my story, you will understand that I will be sure to make
sure that everyone has all the deleted hats stuff they want, because "I
feel your pain". I was in your shoes in '91.
With that said,
presently, I am working on more copies of 1,2,3,5 at the moment. I know
that some of you (and new guys) still don't have all the boot CDs yet.
Give me some more time, I haven't quit yet.
And 4,6,7 are on the way shortly.
If you are worried that you won't get CDs, remember, the more backup copies
we make for other listmembers, the better chance that you will get a copy
eventually. If it was up to me, I would have them in your hands now, I
know how you feel.
Its nice to see the list jumping again.
Oh yeah! Greg Sampson, I haven't forgotten about you, I will make your
CDs next, you have been waiting the longest now.
Tom
