Subject: (hats) Hello
Hi Everyone,
I'm a new member of hats! My name is Nick, I'm 18 and I live
in Connecticut. I have been a hats fan since "Rythem of Youth" came out.
My older sister is also a fan, so she was always playing Hats records
which I still like today. My favorite songs are "Living In China" and
"The Safety Dance" (especially the extended version), but I do like just
about everything they've done. Well thats about it for now. My thanks
to my other friend Nick (Nikolai81@aol.com) for telling me about the
list. I look foward to talkin' about hats with all of you.
A Youth Who Has Rythem,
Nick B.

From: "Dr. Laura M.B. Kramer" <Laura_Kramer@ncsu.edu>
Subject: (hats) Hello, and time for Intros?
Hi Hatters!
And especially to our new members like Nick B!
We've had a lot of new Hatters appearing recently, so maybe it's
time once again for the great Hats "outing"??? Seems like we do
this every 6 months or so, and since it's a new year, I don't mind
reacquainting myself with everyone . . .
I'll even start! ;-)
I'm Laura from North Carolina (US). I'm 28 for another couple of
months, married to a non-Hatter (but Jim likes Jethro Tull, so he
can't be all bad, eh?), and we have 2 dogs (a Chinook and a
Labrador) and 5 cats (those of you who have been keeping score might
note that this is represents a new cat since the last outing). I
work for state government developing educational achievement tests
for the department of education, and my educational background is in
psychological testing and measurement. I like to read (especially
mysteries), collect stamps, train my Lab (2/3U-CD Cocoa CD NA CGC),
volunteer at the Animal Shelter, and do statistics (one sick puppy!).
Hats-wise, I have been a *major* fan since 1983 (Safety Dance, of
course - Martha Quinn's New Music Hour Sunday nights on MTV). I saw
them in concert in 1983 for the ROY tour, and I saw Ivan again last
summer in Montreal promoting The Spell at the Rock sans Frontieres
concert. I have like zillions of MWH albums (including some on
*vinyl* - that sure dates me, doesn't it!), and last summer Ivan
graciously autographed 9 of my MWH/Ivan CDs, including the FPDs, and
he autographed my new Hats T-shirt. I can't wait for the private
concert to meet more of my fellow Hatters, since I've had such a fun
time hanging out with all the ones I've met so far. :-)
Note to new and old alike . . .
I was about to make another order of T-shirts based on my original
ROY concert T, but have had a series of small disasters which have
eaten up my time, so if you still want a T-shirt, send me email here
or at jlkramer@interpath.com Sorry for the delay, for those of you
that have been waiting since August. :-( I'm a terrible person.
Who else is out there? Don't be shy!
:-) Laura :-)

Hey Hatters
I'm Carl Caprioglio, President of Oglio Records. Oglio put together a
"Best Of" collection (called Collection) and released it in the US in
1996.
Oglio subsequently released the full length albums ROY & FolkIII as a 2
for 1 CD and sold it outside the USA via mail order only. A new "Best
Of" based on the same tracks has recently been released in Europe.
I've been on the list since just before we put out Collection. I enjoy
the feedback and suggestions from the list. Perhaps we'll meet at one of
the Ivan concerts.

You'll even read more about Dr. Laura...
I remind all of you that it is very easy and fast to get onto this list,
and easy to modify your actual entry (like if you have a new cat or
other important information ;o).
It is easy to consult. Some people even have a picture (ID card). They
are sorted by country. This can become handy if you are looking for a CD
available only in Canada, or the States or Europe or even Japan (sorry
for that one Will). This way, you rapidly find who can help you. A lot
of peoples on that list offer more specific services. So use it!!!!
Take care

Hello to everyone,
Nathan Shireman, born Sep. 19th, 1975. I just joined the hats mailing
list thanks to some aid from MWH fans. I have been a fan of MWH for many
years, since I first stumbled upon the thing called music. Being a
poet/musician, I have always been inspired by the great works of IVAN and
company. And of course, there's nothing quite like 80's music. I am on a
personal mission to locate and retrieve rare MWH remixes, "Freeways", and
MWH videos. If anyone out there can help, I would be the happiest Hats
fan around! Have a great day!

it wasn't until i heard 'pop' in 87 that my faith was restored and i have

Hello hatless ones,
My name is Chris and I have been on the list for awhile now, peridocially
posting unintelligent musings. I am a career college student at the
University of South Carolina (Columbia, home of Hootie! hehehe and originally
from New Port Richey, Florida), but may actually graduate in December (then
what the hell am I going to do?) I dig basketball, golf, the Simpsons, and
the mountains, which is where I hope to move after my college gig is up.
Other than MWH, my favorite bands include Idaho, Sister Machine Gun, New
Order, KMFDM, and the Cult as well as a couple of semi-locals, Atheneaum and
Jump Little Children (my shameless plug for them).
I got hooked On MWH with the Safety Dance and have been an vocal supporter of
their work ever since. My most prized MWH possession is the 12 inch
revolutionary cover Living in China, as well as all the fan produced CD's, and
of course the bitchin t-shirt. I'll be in Canada this summer, walking around
in circles with the rest of you (lets see, Corona in Mexico, so I guess Molson
in Canada). My other claim to fame is that in the credits of 21st Century and
Sideways, they thank someone named Christopher Reed, which is my first and
middle names (Ivans just thanking me for all my support over the years,
however I cannot explain the exclusion of my last name).

proud owner of that CD.
i have a 2 1/2 year old daughter (alexandra), and whenever she rides in my

singing the whole song, if you can believe it. it's a good thing that my

1000 times.
i look forward to seeing all of you in Montreal this June for the concert.

I'm a big MWH fan and love em to death...I'm one of those out there who
really enjoyed the Spell cd, but it did hav moments of cheesiness. Does
anyone know if "Open Your Eyes" has been released as a single? I saw a
cover on the Tox Records site, but does anyone own a copy? Any remixes?
Just curious...
Also, does anyone out there have a copy of the I Like 12"--looking around
for that one too--is there a remix on it?
Ivan rules! What's this about a show this summer?
Take care,
Jon

Intro time I guess.
I`m Si and I work as a telecommunications engineer for Lucent in the UK,
busy engineering switches for the UK telecomms network. Currently I`m in
the middle of a massive project to replace the current Directory
Assistance network, and am expecting even more work to come in within the
next
year - I`m amazed I even have time to write this :-)) (especially as I`m
also studying for a degree). I am married with 4 little `uns who take up
a large amount of my time but I wouldn`t have it any other way (and they
all like the Hats too - except my wife who has this strange fixation on
`swing`).
I was first turned onto the Hats by Safety Dance (is there anyone here
who wasn't?) and bought the first 2 albums on vinyl way back when I was
still at school (I`m nearly 30 now!!), but then thought MWH had vanished
from the musical landscape until I discovered this list shortly after
starting work in my present job and getting my first taste of the web.
Since being here I have managed to get everything I want by the Hats
(this excludes Sideways currently) on CD which I would never have been
able to do without this list. Kisses to Laura and thanks to Ralph for
starting and completing my collection, and thanks also to everyone
involved in the bootlegs (am I allowed to call them that?). It's also
nice to find a fellow fan who owns his own label, and who really got the
ball rolling as far as official re-issues
go - cheers Carl.
I know I`m not going to be able to see the Ivan concert in the flesh but
I`m depending on your guys to put together a good multimedia package so I
can see what I missed.
Note to Laura: If you`re a terrible person, I must be far worse - I
still haven`t gotten round to converting Bodyguards for you. I will do
this soon.....

Time for an intro:
My name is PD (initials that you run togethor) and I've largely been a lurker
on the list since I discovered it about three months ago. I live in South
Dakota (USA) and am enjoying my last month of being 30! The hats have been
favorites of mine since, you guessed it, '83. I was lucky enough to see them
live (once) and thanks to the list, have discovered that there was music after
PGTW. My collection is somewhat limited, (cds of ROY, PGTW, Spell,
Collection) and I would like to expand it. I would appreciate leads on any CD
material (boots, 2-4-1, et cetra) that people know of or would like to sell.
Interests include working (ugh), music: playing and listening with a special
fondness for The Beautiful South, The Housemartins, Paul Weller, and many 80's
acts, working with my Labrador (a BIG pup who is unsure of his lot in life),
dabbling with web construction, skiing (alpine and nordic), racing mountain
bikes, and reading Martin Amis. Oh, and I do watch Just Shoot Me every
Tuesday (because David Spade is hilarious!), and the Simpsons, King of the
Hill, and X-Files every Sunday!

find any other albums and was unware that they even exsisted until, by

>anyone know if "Open Your Eyes" has been released as a single? I saw a
>cover on the Tox Records site, but does anyone own a copy? Any remixes?
>Just curious...
There is a promo-only 12" of "Open Your Eyes". It has two mixes, one of
them being a longer version of the other. I have only seen it on vinyl, not
CD (or tape). It is good remix but like always, the original is better ;)
>Also, does anyone out there have a copy of the I Like 12"--looking around
>for that one too--is there a remix on it?
I don't know if there is a 12" for "I Like" but I doubt there is one :(

My Intro:
Hello,
My name is the Happy Drew. I grew up in the swampy regions of Florida. When I
was very young I joined a travelling circus and became a clown. After my term
of school was done. (We had a travelling teacher with the circus) , I went
back to Florida where I went to college at a small little place in St
Augustine. Now I live in New York City. I perform a little vaudeville clown
act called "The Happy Drew's Swamp Show". This little period of my life won't
last long because I really miss being in Florida!
In anycase, my connection with Men Without Hats is that I think the the "Pop
Goes The World" album is one of the greatest artistic masterpieces ever
achieved by man.
I don't talk much on the list but I listen to everything.

Subject: (hats) Hello
Hi, my name's Woody, 21, and I'm in the last leg of my MS work in computer
science here in St. Louis, MO. I've been on the list a few years now, and
make one large post every half year or so that nobody replies to. :) I
think I've also bought everything that became available on the list (who
wouldn't?? :) ).. stickers, t-shirts, 2-fer, boots, etc. My college a
capella group, The Amateurs, recently released its first CD "Blue" which
includes Ban the Game and Where Do the Boys Go?. We have also added
"Forever" to our literature this season.
I got involved with MwoH because I used to listen to Weird Al Yankovic,
and I thought his original song "The Brady Bunch" was brilliantly catchy.
Much to my surprise, I found out a year or two later that it was a parody
of this song called "The Safety Dance". (Gimme a break, I'd've been like
7, with no older siblings listening to radio, when that song was out..)
Amazingly, my local library branch had a copy of the Rhythm of Youth vinyl
LP. I must have checked and re-checked that thing out for like a year. I
got the ...In the 21st Century cassette first, thinking "21st century
safety dance" would be at least somewhat related to the original.
Obviously I was disappointed, but grew to like some of the other tracks on
that album. Finally my mom ran across the RoY cassette at Best Buy and
got it for me for 99 cents, and I eventually added more to my collection,
including a few copies of Folk...III on vinyl from Best Buy for like 9
cents each or something. Now I have basically everything that's not
unusually rare (besides the FPD's - thanks lots!!).
As hobbies I play orchestral percussion (a hobby that pays once in a while
:) ) and video games (a hobby that never seems to :/ ). I live with my
cat Munchie, my girlfriend, and her cat Smokey. My latest triumph was
having Rebecca announce that she actually kind of liked some of the early
MwoH stuff, and she let me make a tape for her that she listens to in the
car. (100 minutes - 28 tracks - FotE, RoY demos, RoY, FotE3 with a
somewhat truncated Mother's Opinion (had to fit all those other songs in
too!)) I also listen to Erasure and William Orbit, and went through a
strong Nine Inch Nails phase (yes, before Closer) a few years back that
I've since grown out of.
Welcome aboard to the new folk and hi again to all the people who've been
around!
Woody

>Who else is out there? Don't be shy!
OK - my turn I believe! My name is Mike 'Moose' Best and live in London
England. I own and run a small digital recording/programming studio
called Pigpen Digital, and do computer programming as well. I've just
turned 32, just turned single again...(?) and love mucking about with
sound (even in my spare time). Also, I sell Mac Audio systems to mostly
musicians. Recently remixed and edited several of the bootleg CDs (the
ones Tom is reproducing for you all) and even remixed Moonbeam into a new
version - Moose's Mac Mix I believe I called it - track 9 on the BBC live
CD due out soon... If ppl like it then I might do some more! (oh no I
hear you cry!!!)
Huge fan since Safety Dance went top 20 here in the UK, but didn't have
any CDs 'till a couple of years ago when more money meant more spending
- - even flew to San Fransisco for a CD expedition (not quite but it was a
major reason for going!) and found several Hats CDs just lying in their
racks wanting a good home.
Other interests - Getting the first single out for my band Alaska
Highway... we do all the work in my spare room so you can imagine that it
looks kinda cool with the lights off and the gear on - flashing lights,
LEDs etc - chick puller!! :) Love sandy sea shores - and especially the
sound of the sea - one of nature's amazing efforts that one!
I too have loads of vinyl (you aint _that_ old Bonehead!), but CDs are
taking over - currently on 750+. Massive Vince Clarke freak (Depeche,
Yazoo, Erasure) and and and and...
Right, someone else's turn perhaps - who wants the 'mic' now?

Hmm me thinks - what mixes on vinyl aren't on any of the CDs? I have
PGTW 12", TSD 12" & WDTBG 12" (plus 4 vinyl albums) plus TSD on 7" but
I'm sure I have more somewhere... Anyone got any other 12" vinyl with
mixes we could use? I could record them, clean them up (using some
amazing de-click software I've got on my Mac) and make a master CD for
Tom to dupe... Anyone?
ideas on a postcard to the usual address!

PS Hey Tom - I haven't forgotten the Portion Control vinyl u wanted!!

Subject: (hats) Wanna hear more demos?
Hiya!
No, I do no thave more demos by Men Without Hats or Ivan's solo works but I
do have a trick to share! I am on the Abba mailing list (I think there are
others on this list who are members as well) where the currant discussion is
about the strange little phenomenon when you listen to music with afaulty
amplifier or headphones, you hear some parts of the song. Sometimes you
hear instruments you never heard before and sometimes just the music! Maybe
even a different pitch!
This works perfectly with Abba because their music wasn't just straight
stereo. they had different levels of harmonies an dinstruments played all at
once.
Back on topic, I took a mono-to-stereo headphone jack and plugged it into my
cd player walkman. Then I plugged my headphones into that but only
halfway-- not even halfway. I left it dangling, almost falling off.
Presto! All you hear is music and some isntruments, etc!
I tried this with my 2-for-1 CD. Well, only two songs. "Living In China"
sounds like a demo.
Here's the best part. Right now I am listening to Ivan's CD and so far I'm
at "Superbadgirls". "The Spell" sounded ok. All you heard was music and
some of the lyrics. "Superbadgirls" sounds like a remix!!! An accapella
something like the moonbeam one. You only hear the swirling sound and the
beat. THAT's IT! With Ivan's Voice. You hardley even hear the backup
singer. It sounds like a perfect intro to a live concert (hint hint). At
times you even hear a totally different drum beat!
Now, before peopel start to panic and think there are subliminal messages on
his CD, this is normal. It's only a weird phenomenon. :)
I changed to "Open Your Eyes" and all you hear is Ivan's voice very echoing
and the techno part of the song!!!!!! YOW! Who needs a remix? ;)
There is another way of doing this. I haven't tried it because I don't have
it, but I'll cut and paste the isntructions that were typed up on the Abba
mailing list...
"If you have unpowered speakers plugged into the standard speaker
jack of your sound card, nothing about the sound will change. You must
have speakers that use their own power supply; they plug into the jack
next to the normal speaker jack. My sound card is a Sound Blaster AWE64.
Maybe it takes lots of fancy settings to make this sound happen, and a
basic card won't do it; I don't know. It may depend on what sound card you
have.
Put [the CD] in your CD-ROM and [play a song]. The CD player software that
comes with Windows 95, under View, has a menu item called Volume Control. Click
on that. On the far left is the master Volume Control. It has a button at the
bottom that says "advanced." Click on it. At the bottom, under "Other
Controls," there is a box called "3-D Enhancement." If it is checked, turn
it off. Then, if you have POWERED speakers for your soundcard, the sound
you seek will show up."
If you have Abba's "Take A Chance On Me" on CD, use that to try it out. the
vocals almost disappear.
"1972 (Slippin' Away)" is playing now and it's FANTASTIC! It sounds like it
is playing at a club. You don't even hear Mitsou speaking (if that is
her)!!! All you hear is a piano!
Of course the originals are better but this is one little fun way to listen
to you favourite CDs.
I wonder if the same thing happens with the demos?

Daniele,
What you are describing is called the "OOPS" (Out Of Phase Stereo) effect.
For a full explanation regarding what it is and several methods for
achieving it, check out:
http://www.liv.ac.uk/ipm/beatles/boops.html
This is something big in the Kate Bush mailing list.
They actually had someone manufacturing special headphone jacks
for others on the list to use to hear Kate Bush songs this way.
They called it a "Dreaming Plug" or something similar.
