Well, it has been a lot of fun for me to give back to this group that I have
got so much from over the years. I have really enjoyed being able to share
the demos with you all. I know the excitement that can come from getting
that package, throwing the CD on and just loving hearing stuff that you've
waited to hear forever from Men Without Hats (at maximum volume).
However, I am not going to make any more fo a while. I'm going to start
giving my evenings and weekends back to my wife and cat :) ...they've missed
me while I've been making these CDs.
If you have not got a confirmation email from me then, unfortunately, you
will have to wait for the next opportunity.
This doesn't mean that I won't help folks out in the future...we'll just
have to wait and see. And I am planning on helping Tom out with 4, 6 & 7
when they're available.
I just also wanted to say, with this thread about 'Mr. Somebody' and all,
that the CDs that I made available are non-profit, made by fans for fans
CDs. I am not in the bootleg business. I just wanted to help fellow fans
out. I'm sure you all know that.
Anyway, thanks again to Tom for getting these to us all and

Can anybody out there convert CD4 to mp3s and send them my way? If so
send me a email message and I will give you a username and password
to upload them to the archive.
Also if anybody needs help burning cds I can help out. I have two 4x
CD-rom burners so I can make about 2 discs in 17 mins.
Currently I dont have any of the CDs though since I have most of them
in mp3 format. But when the time comes that more cds are released I
can help out. I would also enjoy making the artwork for the cds
themselves (I am a graphic designer and work at a print shop).

Subject: (hats) bootlegs
I would like to add my two cents to this bootleg demo argument.
Claude has a valid point that should not be, but is easily, ignored by
those of us who love Men Without Hats.
My whole intent for putting on this private concert is to partially
reimburse Ivan and the band for the money that was robbed from them by
Marc Durand following the sales of their most successful
album.
I strongly believe that the creator of a work should retain the rights
to sales and royalties from that work, unless he/she knowingly and
purposefully signs those rights over to a third party.
By obtaining and distributing these bootleg demo tapes among ourselves,
without the express consent of the creator of the work,
we are inadvertently, but most certainly, doing Ivan an injustice.
The anonymous donor of the demos probably obtained them through
fraudulent means, and by copying and distributing the works,
we are doing what amounts to stealing Ivan's work behind his back. By
not bothering to ask his permission to copy and distribute it,
and taking it in our own hands to do so, we are probably in violation of
several intellectual property laws and could actually be targeted
for a lawsuit by the legal owners of these demos.
Let's hope whoever legally owns these demos doesn't do such a thing to
those who are working so hard to keep the work of Men Without Hats
alive. I understand that the intent of those who are
doing this is pure, and they are only trying to do the best they can
for the fans. But please keep in mind that there are losers in this
activity, and we are only hurting the ones we love the most.
Angie

It is supposed to be a MWH concert, but we are not sure which
musicians Ivan may ask to back him up. The list members strongly agree
that they would like to hear the old MWH material played at this show.

Hi all...
After seeing this been done successfully by other list group I'm ready
to try the experience with you. I will put out a Tribute to Men Without
Hats CD. All the tracks will be performed by list members (a lot of us
do play music) and will be Men Without Hats songs. If Ugo Bugg wants to
submit one song backed by the Doroschuck bros, that's fine with me ;o)
I will take care of legal aspects and will pay a license for all the
songs used. The CD will be sold via Internet with a special price for
list members. Several promo copies will be send to Ivan and family.
I won't bother list members with tons of details, so if you are
interested in participating in this project (if you want to submit a
song) contact me personaly. Several persons allready manifest their
interest in that project. If you are not sure what I'm talking about, go
take a look at what the Gentle Giant mailing list did:
http://www.quackwatch.com/GT/
This thing was so popular it became a DOUBLE CD. It is even distributed
in music stores!
Why not MWH???
I will also accept submissions for cover art...
Take care
Claude

Now if I could just learn to type the address in correctly the FIRST
time - you'd have seen this already!! ;-)
Hi Hatters!
Angie said . . .
> The anonymous donor of the demos probably obtained them through
> fraudulent means
Let me say to everyone that this is not the case in the least!!
LOOONG soapbox monologue follows -
After the chat with Ivan, when Ivan thought "Somebody" was Marc
Durand, I emailed to Ivan. I explained the situation, told him the
identity of "Somebody," and asked him for his permission to release
the demos to the list.
If you were at the chat, or read the transcript, you may have seen
me ask Ivan if he got the gifts that Tom and I sent to him. He said
yes, so we know that even if email doesn't always get through to
Ivan, we have a working snail address.
Knowing this, as a followup to my email to Ivan, Tom sent Ivan a
copy of the fan produced disc (FPD) that we proposed, the one you
now know as CD#5, as a way of showing him that we are only making
the CD to share his music among ourselves and that we are acting in
good faith. This was sent looooong before Xmas, and therefore long
before the ice storm and delayed mail. Thus, we feel confident that
Ivan has received the disc and approves of our endeavors just as he
has tacitly approved of the previous FPDs (like the ones he
autographed for me in July, and proudly showed to his parents!!!).
If Ivan didn't want Tom and the other volunteers to continue
producing the CD, he has had over a month to tell us not to. For the
record, Colin not only has my email and snail addresses, he also has
my phone numbers including my cell phone number. My *mother* doesn't
even have my cell phone number!
This probably totally sounds like a Kohlberg level 6 rationalization
(dig out your intro psych text and look up "stages of moral
development"), and maybe so. But I am *sick* of reading "fraud"
over and over again, so maybe this will get a few knickers out of
knots. If Tom and I seem to be protecting "Mr. Somebody," it is not
from the long arm of the law, it is from us (note I include myself
in this!) zealous die-hard fans. "Somebody" wishes to remain
anonymous not because he is afraid of being arrested or sued, but
because he is a shy and retiring person who doesn't need to be
either adulated or *pestered*.
So please, Please, PLEASE *PUH-LEEEEZE* give this a rest! Let's
instead talk about how wonderful the demos are and look forward to
seeing each other next summer.
Stepping off from my soapbox now, and trying not to trip over my
shoelaces . . .
Hatlessly (which is a bad idea in *this* weather),
Laura in NC :-)

This is not the way this is suppose to work! Silence doesn't mean
approbation. JUST AS AN EXEMPLE they may be annoyed by that thing, but
having to deal with it more annoying...

The funny thing is that the two most zealous die-hard fans (Tom and
Laura) know the name of Mr. Somebody!!!!! For those of you who know me,
you have to admit I would be the last one to adulate or *pester*
someone!!!!! It looks like some of us think that they are above other
(THEY can know because THEY can behave, not like those other pestering
regular list members). Another thing is, Ivan is not the only one
concerned here. Jeremie Arrobas do play on some of those songs. He even
composed part of them, Treblinka is 100% Arrobas! Was he informed?
> So please, Please, PLEASE *PUH-LEEEEZE* give this a rest! Let's

Dear Laura, I was giving it a rest. But your message deserved an answer.
One last thing. I find it funny that most of the people on the list
annoyed by that "fraud" thread asked some kind of anonymous group to
stop it, while I was the only one talking about it (apart from late and
courageous input from Angie). Have I miss something?
This being said, I still love MWH and their music and will always be
very happy to ear new and old stuff from them, but not at any price. I
respect peoples opinion and won't interfere with the way they live, so
please don't try to interfere with the way I live, and don't remove my
right to ask simple questions...
Take care

not be the title. Thanks.
Also, the girl in the band photo of the inside cover of PGTW does not appear

The girl in the video was an actress that couldn't quite get her

Subject: Re: (hats) ... in the middle of a mystery
How come when something outstanding happens on this list, people start
bitching about it:
for example:
(1) the most popular song list, where people complained that the safety dance
shouldnt be number 1, etc. (somebody put alot of effort into that)
(2)cd #5, who is Mr. Somebody?
(3)the private concert, what songs will Ivan play, can we make him play our
setlist?
now lots of things have happened that are good (t-shirts, 3cd set, etc.) and
no one has bitched, but man, we have some tedious debates over the above
issues...
voice your opinions, you should be heard, but remember, there are alot of
people who sacrifice time to do these things (I am not one of them, and I
appreciate all of their efforts)
and now, I depart happy, listening to CD#5 (Mothers opinion kicks ass!)

Didn't (or wouldn't?) Ivan originally send his demos to Statik in the
UK? And if they're only demos, and not the "finished work," Marc might
own the rights to the songs in a finished form but not the *original*
attempts.
And as Statik went belly-up and all belongings were turned over to the..
government? Monarchy? Then whoever has the demos probably never
"owned" them but just has an original or copy..
My guess would be Laurie Dunn w/Statik. She signed the band after
receiving the demos, right?? And any demos from a 2nd album would have
been routed through her at Statik.. and she's not on the same side of
the ocean as Marc (re: IRC).

Great idea Claude! In fact, the Thomspon Twins fan club releases tapes like
this all the time. I have one copy :)

Three messages:
One, I'm not totally clear on this Marc thing. I think I know what you mean
from the letter itself, but not since my first mention have I heard anything
about this guy.
What happened between him and Ivan?
Second, Angie, you're right. But how could we obtain copies of Ivan's works
otherwise? I know I haven't looked into all (if any) possibilities, but if
there was a way fair to us fans _and_ Ivan, please, anyone, let us know.
Third, I'm sorry Ivan and Hats. If I had known that what I purchased wasn't
the only way to find your music, I most surely would have done it.

Tom, Laura, Mr. Somebody,...
Exactly what was used as the source for the demos from which CD #4 was
made? Like, were they made directly from the mother master cassettes?
Or from very good copies of the original masters or what? In other
words, how many generations old was the source? Just curious.
I've noticed that the 1980 demos have greater treble content and are
slightly "thinner" sounding than the "Folk of the 80s" EP on CD #1.
I've also noticed that the 1984 rehearsals have less treble content
and are slightly "duller" sounding than, say, the "Freeways" remixes
also on CD #1. I'm not complaining, just commenting. Being a
producer/artist type in my own right, I notice these things and wonder
why they are this way.
Also, Tom, what was the source for the 1985 "Le Spectrum" concert video?
Did I not read from you early on that it was from a laserdisc?
I can't imagine that it would be because, with the frame counter in
the bottom right corner of the display, it would have never gone to
market that way. I'm probably just imagining that I read a post of
yours that said so, but until I hear it from you one way or the other,
I'll have to believe that I did.

I don't know where the 1985 video concert came from. I am pretty sure
that it is second generation. -- definately not from laserdisc, I promise.
-- From another Mr. Somebody.
The demos are first generation, different types of cassettes, differently
aged, so they sound different.
It is nice that you are so concerned with sound quality like me :-)
In fact, I noticed that ROY is kinda bass-shy, other songs sound ok,
though.
What do you think Myke?
