It is nice to no we all have the "right" to know. What is strange is
that some seems to have more rights than others?

I think it's excellent having a mystery person instead of trying to figure
out who this person is. It's a lot more fun that way :) All we know is
it's some guy. What if he's really a woman? What if he's a master of
diguise? :D So just enjoy it, have some fun. But what's this talk about
fraud? FRAUD?! This is clearly not a case of fraud. Come on, ya got the
songs, now enjoy 'em! :)

Claude, us knowing who it is isn't going to change anything. People are
still going to listen to the demos and be greatful there was a Mr. Somebody
even if he had to kill to get them. People might not admit it openly, they
might wave a finger at Mr. S but they'll be listening to the demos while
doing it! Gee, I guess he'd be like a modern day Robin Hood wouldn't he?
Anyway, it is possible that Mr. S has a good self asteem and just doesn't
need his fifteen minutes of fame. This is what I suspect and I commend him
for that. I also wish to thank Mr. N for the work he put into the demos.
They sound awesome Tom, you obviously know what your doing there!

Claude and other list members,
Just so you all don't worry that Mr. S has done something wrong,
"Somebody" wishes to remain anonymous only to collectors who would
pester "somebody" for more collectable stuff. "Somebody" has been
pestered for collectables from other bands too often and doesn't want
to deal with more.
Ivan had several direct opportunites to tell "somebody" not to give out
the demos and did not. (Not just in the recent chat session.)
I hope everyone is a little more at ease now.
Now lets get down to discussing how much we like all new stuff we have, ok?
This list should be jumping by now and its not.

Subject: (hats) The Rhythm of Youth is...
I love the demos. Especially the RpY demos because they sond sooo
different! They kind of remind me of the Dr. Who theme! I am not sure
which series of Dr. who but if it helps the one witht he "whirlpool" opening
:) Hey, I was 5 when that show was on.
"Living in HCina" reminds me of Freeways. Well, the beginning. I love the
guitars in it. Being all screechy and loud. Perfect!
In all the RoY demos, it is interesting to hear Ivan's voice in a differnet
tone than what we all heard on his albums (the commanding deep voice and the
soft one on PGTW). "Treblinka" is GREAT. But "Rythm of Youth" has GOT to
be the outstanding of the RoY demos. I wonder what he means by the rythm of
youth is the rhythm of life and vice versa? "1999" rocks, too. I like the
melody Ivan sings in the verses. Very playful and casual. If that makes
any sense.
As for the Fot80s3 demos, it's great to hear the "ealry versions" of the
songs. "Editions of You" is slower and, I do admit, it's very relaxing!!!
"Ou sont mes men" sounds like it would make it today!!! (Ivan, use it in
your next album!!) But it's tooooooo short! any song that is shorter than
"Ban The Game".....
I love the demos. There is some great stuff here. The RoY demos remind me
of the Freeways EP and i always have to listen to it after I hear them!
Today I was lsitening to my 2for1 (thanks again Carl!) and it's better now!
I hear the differnce between the demos and the final versions. You actually
hear the progression, the creative process, etc. Love it!
Too bad music like that isn't made anymore. I wonder if it's possible for
Men Without Hats to "get back together" (did they ever break up?) and record
this style again. I know that isn't likely but hey, I wonder if it can be
done? :)

Subject: (hats) RoY Demos
Hey!
What's the full story surrounding the Roy demos?
"Gravity Is My Enemy", "1999", "Rhythm Of Youth", and "Treblinka"
to me don't sound like "working versions" but rather complete and
finished versions. I think if the 4 tracks which were released as
the "Folk Of The 80s" EP had been put on Side One and the four
aforementioned "RoY Demo" tracks been placed on Side Two - the
eight of them together on one disc would have made one hell of
a mini-LP in 1980.
Furthermore, to me they don't sound like demos from the "Rhythm
of Youth" era. They have a destinctive "Folk Of The 80's" EP
style and quality about them. Does anybody have the approximagte
oops/ approximate recording month(s) and/or date(s) for them?
This makes me wonder why we're calling them the "RoY Demos" to
begin with. Clearly the recording year given, 1980, supports
this view as well.
I think these four tracks are equal in every way to the four
tracks released as "Folk Of The 80's" in 1980. Who kept them
from us for so long and why? (Marc Durand because he was/is a
jerk?)

Hi all!
Due to Montreal's state of emergency, our plans to talk with Ivan's
manager about the private concert is postponed until everything gets
back to normal! Francis has it in his agenda to do so at a point in the
future. He has tried several times to reach the manager by phone and
was unable to do so because often, the man's voice mailbox is filled to
capacity! However,Francis has known the guy for years; I
beleive he worked with him at one time, and has spoken to him on the
phone and met him for lunch once to discuss what we list members would
like to propose. Both Ivan's manager and Ivan himself are aware of our
plans. We simply have to schedule a meeting and ask them to sign a
contract to book the date and work out the arrangements for
compensation. Everything is rolling right along - it's just that with
Montreal covered in ice, things work a lot more slowly than they used
to!!
But don't worry - this concert is one of my biggest dreams and I will
continue to do all I can to make it come true, and I can say that
Francis feels the same way. The ball is still rolling....

I think the point of the matter is that releasing these demos in this
unofficial way is likely going against contracts in place and thus
illegal, as are all boots.
Now personally, I don't have a problem with that, but if it was me I
wouldn't want my name splattered all over the place. Thus my take on
why the name of the individual who supplied the demos is a secret is
because the are very legit!!

I'm looking for the Japanese CD release of:

These are just two items I'm looking for because (as always) the

What is the meaning of amnt? Maybe it is my bad english, but it seems
you always use plenty of words I don't understand (and are not in my
english dictionary!). How come?

In my opinion, the Spell is weak compared to PGTW. I'm sure there are other
opinions, though, Aaron.

Claude, I not saying you're wrong about how you feel about the tapes. I'm
saying it doesn't matter. The CD's are out. You can probably make a really
safe assumption that there are those who would prosecute the person who
released them to us. At this point, you can either own a really kool part
of Mw/oH history, or you can continue with the Sherlock Holmes bit. If you
do find out who it is, that will not change the validity of the source.

It's a lot less hassle for you to properly trim down quoted text from the
message you're repsonding to than it is for xmission to archive it and ship
around copies of it to hundreds of subscribers or for those hundreds of
subscribers to wade through it in your message.

I'm no expert whatsoever on the music business, but it seems to me that it
would make sense for a demo to be a complete, finished version of a song
which is then submitted to someone for consideration. Then, if they like
it, it gets touched up, changed, and rerecorded, under the producer's
supervision. Thus I think it makes sense for these songs to be in the
state they're in: finished, but a little rough around the edges.
> Furthermore, to me they don't sound like demos from the "Rhythm
> of Youth" era. They have a destinctive "Folk Of The 80's" EP
> style and quality about them.
It would seem to me that these tracks would have been recorded not long
after the Folk of the 80's EP, so again it would make sense that they
would sound similar. Also I would speculate so far as to suggest that the
Folk of the 80's, being a small, low-budget release, didn't have much
"production" associated with it - so it would be pretty "pure" MwoH. Same
goes with the demos.
I would think that the "RoY era" sound is this early MwoH pure sound, with
some production and a somewhat larger budget to throw around. So I think
that's where the differences in "sound" between RoY and the "RoY demos"
comes from.
It's interesting, though, that only two of the "demo'd" tracks made it
onto the album, and one of them in such a radically different form.
Anyway, more generally, I have to say I've really enjoyed this newest
(old) CD. The 4 new songs are all great (though I could do without the
violinist with the horrible intonation). There is something about them
though that is very much like the FotE's tracks - Gravity is my Enemy with
Security seems to be the strongest correspondence in my mind. So far 1999
and RoY have infected me a little more than Treblinka and Gravity...
This is something I wrote about when we got the Freeways EP CD#1 (or 3, or
2, or whatever number you want to call it), but again I find myself most
interested in how "pure", "simple", or "honest" the early stuff is... and
the earlier it is, the more "pure" it is. And Ivan sounds so YOUNG! :)
It's certainly interesting to hear the earlier versions of Living in
China and the FotE3 tracks, and what got changed/added/deleted. I also
was amused by the dedication at the beginning of Unsatisfaction, and the
ironic implications therefrom about Ivan's current (ongoing) career.
I wouldn't trade the versions on this CD for the "real" released versions,
but it's fascinating and enjoyable to be able to hear both. What's up
with the strange "offset beat" in the rehearsal No Dancing? It sounds
really "wrong" to me but I haven't yet decided whether that's because it's
really strange or because I'm just so used to the released version. I
also really enjoyed the rehearsal Where Do the Boys Go?.. it seemed to
have this raw energy and silliness that the released version has less of.
In particular it just sounds like they were having a good, goofy time
recording it. Lots of fun to listen to.
As for other recent postings -
I would recommend Pop Goes the World muchso over The Spell. Not that The
Spell is bad, but PGTW is really a must-have, and I'm surprised you've
survived this long without it :)
I recall also Ivan saying something about releasing some more stuff under
the Men Without Hats name. This may be exciting, but remember that the
"old style" early MwoH we've been hearing lately in rereleases, demos,
etc. is a thing of the past - a phase of Ivan's musical evolution that
he's left behind. Recall that the most recent thing we heard on the MwoH
name was Sideways, which was quite a disappointment to many (myself
included). Shrug, like many of you, I'd love to hear new material in the
"old style", but I wouldn't count on it.. regardless of the name printed
on the upcoming label.
Well, there's my monster post for this quarter.. thanks for reading,
everyone :)

Yeah. Too many people say "time moves on. gotta keep up". Why drop a perfectly
good thing when you have it? What did Nirvana, Wu-tang or 311 ever do that
sounded remotely unique? Hats has variety and even a message in most songs
that people can actually relate to (Especially "The Great Ones" and
"Freeways"!)!
Also, what DID happen to the group? Is Collin still in that opera company in
NY?
I know Ivan is solo but didn't he have Stefan in "Sideways"? Hmm... It'd be
great if Hats could release their old albums. Even if they did it with live
performances ;)

Guys! Please! It may be important to some people that they know who the person
is who supplied us ever so graciously with those tapes. Anybody who is curious
should just ask the guy who distributed them. If he still says he can't
release the name, badgering him won't make things better.

Right. That's just all you can do sometimes.

He helped our cause, though. Is he that bad that we would dismiss his act of
kindness over something trivial like his (her?) name?
Besides, we're Hats fans! Who would want to mess with our little list, anyway?
