The "1983" version is the mix that was released on its own as a single (which
actually came out in 1982, I think). If you have a commercial release with
"Antarctica" on it that's not the original "Folk Of The '80s" EP or the
"Freeways" EP, the mix of "Antarctica" is the 1982 version. You can check
the discography for more details:

be even willing to make some copies...

Hey listfolk!
I just got Tom's video (I was #50, I think), and it's a remarkable piece of
work. What a wealth of interviews, etc.!
When I get over my elation from the videotape, I will go back to sulking
about *not* being in the first 50 for the bootleg CD's. Like a couple others
have mentioned, I found out the hard way that being on the 'digest' version
of the list can bite you in the butt. (#$%*&!)
Is there any news on further availability of these items on CD? (PLEASE!!!)

This is kinda weird, but...
In 1979, when I was only 13 years old, I decided to try something novel and
record my favourite local radio station for a full 90 minutes - commercials
and all. I used my dad's AM/FM/8-track recording system to do this. I was
so fascinated by the results of this that I decided to do it again a month
later - and again three months later. To this day, I still have these
8-track tapes of the radio. (Although finding a player in decent shape and
working order is another matter.)
I continued to record the radio periodically from then on using whatever
equipment I had available at the time. In 1980, I switched to cassettes.
Since then I have built a collection of some 150 or so radio tapes. I have
done my best to document the changing styles of the hit parade as I hear it
via my local stations and can say that this hobby of mine only gets more
interesting as time marches on. One thing I love about it is that I have
a neat way of listening in to my favourite songs of the past - a way in which
I know no other person can because few if any have ever done what I've done.
But the real reason I'm telling all of you about this is... I recorded my
first radio 8-track on August 8, 1979. Since that day, I've tried (and
have not succeeded really, but oh well) to record an anniversary radio tape
every August 8th. I've also since learned that August 8 is a very interesting
date in that...
On 8/8/69, The Beatles walked across "Abbey Road".
On 8/8/74, Nixon resigned.
On 8/8/79, I recorded my first 90-minute radio tape
On 8/8/96, I debuted my web site on the WWW.
But the real reason I'm telling all of you about this is... I just finished
watching my MWH video tape and couldn't help but freak out when I saw in the
closing credits that the Montreal MWH concert I just bought from Tom Norman
was performed and taped on 8/8/85!
And if I'm KOnot mistaken, I recorded my favourite local station on
8/6/85 (my sister's birthday). Unfortunately, I didn't wait two days longer
to do it! Anyway, I have been wondering if anybody in this list would be
interested in having copies of my vintage radio tapes from the 80s as we
obviously all love the pop music from the early MTV era.
If so, post me a note and I'll tell you what I have available.
The nostalgic feel of these recordings is really intense - or perhaps if you
are too young to remember them, this could be the best way for you to have
your own piece of the past to NW< enjoy - a gift from someone who was there
when you couldn't be!

Subject: (hats) Hi out there!
Hi. My name is Vince and I'm from Montreal where Men Without Hats were
formed. I've been a huge fan of theirs since the very early eighties and
took quite a lot of ribbing about it in school for it. I seriously think I
was the only one in my school who liked them. Anyway, that didn't stop me
from wearing their t-shirts in school and flaunting "my" band. To this day,
people still remember me for that reason (and in some cases, for only that
reason!) In 1986, I was co-editor of my high school's yearbook, and I
managed to put in a picture of me lying on a table with my "Freeways" tour
t-shirt.
I first noticed MWH in about 1982 when "Safety Dance" was becoming a huge
hit. Back then, the video was playing practically daily. One day, my
sister and I were watching it when she turned to me and let me know that the
singer's name is Ivan Doroschuk. I asked her how she knew this, and she
told me that she used to work with him at the Montreal General Hospital.
Back then, he used to bring the emergency patients into the hospital from
the incoming ambulances. She told me that he was soft-spoken and often used
to let his fellow employees at the hospital know that he was starting a band
and that he would make it big one day. This statement would often be met
with laughter and a peppering of 'yeah, sure!'s. My sister was one of them
who laughed. To this day, she feels stupid for that. Anyway, that
prompted me to buy the "Rhythm of Youth" LP and I instantly became a serious
fan. Then, last week, I purchased MusicHound's Rock: The Essential Music
Guide, and found a WWW address dedicated to MWH which led to this E-mail.
I'm still surprised there are big fans of theirs out there. It's somewhat
reassuring knowing that others find the MWH sound unique and great.
I've seen two of their concerts here in Montreal and have accumulated some
articles from newspapers and magazines over the years. Among some of the
MWH paraphernalia that I have, probably the most unique is a 'no hats' light
switch, which surely wasn't commissioned for MWH, but is still a cool thing
to have if one is a MWH fan. In any case, I look forward to reading what
you guys have to say out there!

Greetings,
All the 50 videos are done! I have returned all the original videos.
Please tell me if i've missed anyone of the contributers. There are still
plenty of people who want copies. Please post if you have 2 VCRs and can
make copies of your (master) video.
I think my VCR is going to get sick if I do another 50 off of my tape.
It's fine and new now, but I think my heads will get mad if do that much
more recording.
By the way, shouldn't we all be discussing the stuff on the video?
The list has been dead dead dead. I thought that this video and J.R.'s
CDs would awaken this mailing list.......
Here's something to discuss.... Did you all know that there is a
"Freeways" video? Francis told me so. In fact, Francis has a video
interview segment he showed me that has a 20 second clip of this video! It
looks classic! It appears to be MWH performing live in a little Montreal
club, w/ all kind of cool video effects.
Does anyone have this complete video? It must be rare because even
Francis doesn't have this.... and he has taped nearly everything in
Montreal -> MWH related since 1987.

I have always wondered about this too. I came across an article once
that described MWH as making a video for WDTBG (or perhaps a different
song from that album) using a "haunted house" motiff. They recorded it
while here in Calgary during their FOT80's III tour. However, I have
never heard anything to corroberate this (until now of course). Anybody
else know anything?
