Hi all!
Any word on more CDs? I've missed both chances on getting the list
because I receive my E-Mails later than everyone else. I'm hoping
someone will be offering CDs again.
Thanks,
Francois

The CDs are wonderful!!! I can't stop listening to them, even to work on my
research paper! But I have a question: was "Freeways" originally intended for
Folk III, like "Editions of You"? It's such a great song! If those two songs
would have been on Folk III, that album would have done much better...

After a crappy day at work yesterday, I returned home in a SEVERE funk.
But when I opened my mailbox, all my grey clouds disappeared, for there
were my MWH CDs!
I have been wanting to hear the tracks on "freeways" for years now... and
there they were, coming out of my speakers. I love tracing the history
of bands that I like (no pun intended), and listening to the sparse
arrangements on "Modern(e) Dancing" and "Utter Space" gave me a deeper
appreciation for the music that appeared on "Rhythm Of Youth".
The live concert discs are awesome... it's interesting to see that they
were performing some material live *years* before it saw official release
("Jenny Wore Black" in '85!).
J.R.... you deserve a medal for this. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Between
these CDs and the "Young Ones" tapes I just ordered, I have given myself
the best Christmas gifts of all...
We can dance if we want to!

Hello Everyone: I am new on this list and I am really happy I joined it. I
have been a fan of MWH ever since the first time I heard "The Safety
Dance". Here in Chile MWH is only known for Safety Dance, I Like and Pop
Goes the World.
The funny thing is that soccer is THE main sport, and some people really
go grazy for it, and one of the main anthems sung at Stadiums are with the
melody of Pop Goes the World (of course the words are different and in
Spanish), but no one knows where it comes from. This same thing can be
observed in Argentina, where soccer fans are also very energetic.
Well, I wonder if this has happened someplace else..maybe the melody of
Pop Goes the World is sticky, or leads to other inspirations....

Yikes! A "Stunt Chimps for Burgess Meredith" fan! This was a vaguely
industrial band that I did after the PGTW tour. Very serious and
menacing, but as we found the whole industrial scene a little silly we
spent most of our time howling with laughter at our own songs. Kind of
became local heroes in Toronto for a while, but no one else ever heard
of us. (Got my first royalty cheque for a song called "Claves" in this
band... it was $1.37)

Dear Thomas,
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I got your tape a while
back, but I just started a new job, and have been adjusting to that in the
last little while.
Last weekend, a similarly rapid Hats fan and myself sat down and watched
the video from start to finish. You couldn't wipe the grins off our faces
with 30 grit sandpaper. WOW! You have done us all a great favour with
your obvious labour of love.
We particularly enjoyed the "Freeways" concert footage. It exhibited an
energy (and enthusiasm from Ivan) that seemed to be sadly missing from the
live "Sideways" tour we saw here in Edmonton. On the funnier side of
things, we were bemused by the obvious lip-synching that was occurring
during the Top of the Pops and Solid Gold segments. Actually, "Jenny" was
even funnier as a guitar player, since her hands never once moved from the
lock she had on the frets.
Great accomplishment. Between you, Carl at Oglio, and J.R. Bookwalter, I
think I may finally be able to end my quest for the old MWOH material.
Thanks again, and have a great holiday season!
Regards,
Steven Searle
Edmonton, Alberta
P.S. I trust you got my money order safely.

Subject: (hats) Hey Men!
Hey Men!
Um, I got my CDs!
As everyone else who've received them previously has stated, their
quality is top notch. I and some of my friends collect and trade rare
concert recordings frequently - and this kind of quality is even rarer
(or more rare (or whatever))!
I was just typing to someone last week that if it weren't for The
Safety Dance and I Like, my fave MWH song would probably be Ban The
Game (from Rhythm Of Youth). I said the problem with it though is that
it's just a little short intro. I've always thought it would've made a
great song if it was longer. Then yesterday, after ten years of
thinking this, I discovered that it was indeed a full length song when
played live! What a kewl surprise!
What exactly is the source of this live material?
And I don't mind the fading between the songs at all! In fact, I think
it's kinda neat. Whenever I make a custom various artists compilation
tape in the future, they'll be a breeze to include because of it.
With regards to the rare studio stuff CD, I'm one of those who wondered
for twelve years why "(Part III)" appeared after the name "Folk Of The
80s". Until I joined this list a few months ago, I'd never even been
aware of the existence of the original "Folk Of The 80s" EP. It's very
nice to have it now and be able to listen to it anytime I wish, despite
the fact that I do not have a long history of wanting to and being
deprived of it at the same time as I know some of you who are reading
this do.
Is Antarctica listed as "Antarctica (1980)" on the original EP label or
is that just something included on my CD to differentiate it from the
version that was released in 1983? The two versions don't sound much
different to me, although I haven't yet done any side-by-side
comparisons. To me it just sounds like there is a bit more reverb in
the 1980 mix.
I have mixed opinions of "Freeways" having never heard it before
either. I don't think it's the greatest thing MWH has ever done, but
it's a very good track for MWH curiosity seekers like myself.
I really hate 12" singles which pack in 4+ remixes of the same song. I
cannot play them all the way through and be thoroughly entertained like
I can with most of the other discs I play. I have owned the "Pop Goes
The World" and "Moonbeam" 12" singles since they were released. I've
always thought "Moonbeam" was a much better song than it's chart action
suggested - and the 12" remixes of it are very good as well, however I
have always *hated* the PGTW remix 12". All of the remixes on it sound
very slow which makes for a poor dance record. Ivan also completely
stripped the melody from them, turning them basically into soft rap
remixes. Raspberries to that!
But overall, these CDs are three of my most prized possessions. If you
didn't take a number quickly enough to get your own set and would like
a copy of them on a single VHS HiFi videocassette, post me a note
privately.

What is the 1983 version? Where is it? The 1980 version sounds just
like the Freeways one and the one on "Collection". Although, I did not
do any side by side comparisons myself.
As for the 12" of "PGTW", it's interesting. That one point where Ivan
"sings" the last verse (I think it is), he sounds a lot like the singer
from Guns And Roses.

Just had a snowball fight with one of the neighbours kids - doesn't sound
too wierd but a) its the first white Christmas we've had in London for 25
years and b) I think it was a neighbours kid but I'm not too sure as I've
never seen him before! Anyway, I'm sure the police will come round
later...
We've got a ghost!!! We were at my parents for Christmas day and for some
reason we got talking about ghosts and stuff and my girlfriend mentioned
that she'd bee touched on the shoulder a few times when there was no-one
else in the flat. She didn't mention it earlier as she thought that she
was going a bit mental. I've noticed that sometimes the studio goes really
cold and I feel someone walk past me or past the door. I thought that I
was going mad so I didn't mention anything either! Anyway, whats this got
to do with the MWH list? Well, you have to talk to ghosts and keep them
happy so we're calling ours Ivan after the great one who we all remember!
Obvious really wasn't it?
Right, Antarctica has just finished, and its now Security - well done JR
Bootlegger!! I was surprised to hear a full version of Ban The Game as I
always thought that it was 51 seconds long. And, as well as that, all that
'rock' stuff from a 'synth band'... marvellous. Does anybody out there
know if they ever used sequencers in their shows, as I heard loads of bum
notes (no complaints though!) and wonder if any of it was ever sequenced.
Playing live drums over a sequencer is quite hard, the bass was played by a
guy with a piece of wood and some long strings, lots of guitar and
(obviously) live synths.
The reason why I ask is that in '85 I went live with my band Shootersway
Park and we used a Korg SQD8 (or was it a SQD1?) sequencer for most of the
stuff, so they were available at the time. I know that loads of people
complain when they hear computerised music, but that never stoped Vince
Clarke did it? Early Depeche Mode was mostly on tape (still is as far as I
know!), and people like Howard Jones rely on them totally. I saw the Human
Leage at the Royal Albert Hall and they used no sequencers whatsoever -
everything played live. I know that Live '83 sounds sequenced but I'm not
too sure, apart from the Linn drum(?) feeding a simple pulse to an analogue
pulse synth or something. I'd be interested in any news on that...
Right, off to eat more turkey and annoy the neighbours.
Have a great new year and a marvellous birthday - I will :-)

Just read the pre-xmas email - wasn't antarctica the b-side to one of their
12" singles? Safety Dance i think it was because at the time i swopped the
7" for the 12" version and lost the track. Or was that security? i say
that as my RoY DAT has some extra tracks on it, including a shorter version
of antarctica which _definately_ sounds different to the freeways CD
version... and it ain't just the reverb!
While Clare's away the ghost and I can play! We can dance if we want...

PS I just went to send this email and I felt the ghost again - creepy or

End of hats Digest V2 #11
*************************
To subscribe to hats Digest, send the command:
subscribe hats-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com". If you want to
subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-hats":
subscribe hats-digest local-hats@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "hats-digest"
in the commands above with "hats".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/hats/archive. These are organized by date.
