Subject: (hats) UK Videos and CD duplicates
Mornin' all!
I was just sat in the bath contemplating the pit stop strategy for the next
round of the Sony PlayStation F1 Grand Prix (whadjamean you ain't got a
Sony? - ask Santa!) when I realised that my life was not complete without a
copy of the MWH video! I'm sure you can understand... Well, can someone
do me a UK version - or if someone in the UK has already got one can they
lend it to me for a couple of days so I can duplicate it several times
(just in case someone else wants a copy). Answer direct to me please...
thanks awfully :-)
Well done to JR for getting the CD bootleg out there. I'm annoyed that I
just didn't have the time to get things done myself, so I'm glad that
someone else picked up the baton and ran to the finish line - and wasn't
disqualified for taking stimulants (or that was JR's story anyway!). For
anyone who missed out on the first batch (I know only 50 sets were made) -
I should have the CDs and a Mac copy of the artwork soon, courtesy of JR,
so I'll probably be able to do some more copies for anyone who wants them.
I'll post prices etc if anyone is interested.
Anyway, must dash as everyone wants christmas presents this year,
especially the young'n's (not mine thankfully) - their tastes in toys gets
more expensive by the minute - have you noticed that? They'll get a MWH CD
and be happy... or I'll be _very_ angry!
Enjoy the festivities and remember 'you can dance if you want' unless
you're Aunty Maude...
mikey
PS Bonehead - what did you want?

Let me tell you about a woman I knew named Lyssa Walker. She was a very
talented writer and artist, she loved people and cats and books and new
experiences, she did Tarot readings and played role-games (both as GM
and player). She DJ'd dances for SF conventions, not for pay but for love of
music. She said that "The Great Ones Remember" by Men Without Hats was
the anthem of Cthulhu. She taught me that I hadn't gotten too old for
rock, that there was still music out there that wasn't thrash or disco.
If not for her, I wouldn't be listening to some of the music I enjoy
today.

Wulp, in H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, the ancient eldritch beings from
the dark voids between the stars were known as the "Great Old Ones." Check
"The Call of Cthulhu" for more information than any sane being can
comprehend at once...
Now I have to go through the lyrics and check for references...

To further the MWH-Lovecraft connection: is it REALLY just a coincidence
that one of Lovecraft's flagship stories about the GREAT (old) ONES, "At the
Mountains of Madness", is set in ANTARCTICA?!
Well, of course it is, but sometimes idle speculation can be fun. ;-)
I've been having a great time with J.R.'s CDs and Tom's video this past
week. What a treat to be able to see and hear all this (unfortunately) rare
stuff. "In the 21st Century" is just a stellar video, and "Sideways" only
reaffirms my belief that MWH were ahead of their time. That video looks more
like something from today than 1991 (while scraggly-haired, t-shirt-wearing,
low-slung Les Paul-playing youth are common in videos today, that was not the
case in '91!).
And the version of "I Like" on the '85 concert CD is just roaring! I had
to crank that up as soon as it lurched into the chorus riff, with all those
crunchy guitars. Good to see Ivan behind the piano for "I Sing Last", too.
Quenched after a long trek through the desert,
Kevin

I just watched Tom's video and I LOVE IT! I had never even seen the "Safety
Dance" video before...it is truly amazing. But it also gave me a theory why
continued commercial success eluded MWH - there wasn't enough of Ivan! Not
only does he possess great musical talents, he also has great hair, and there
aren't any good pictures of him on their first two albums. And I have one
question: why is there a big letter T on the side of the big letters in the
back of the "I Like" video?
I really really really really wish J.R.'s CDs were here!

Funny how it takes an American to help out a Canadian band! :) Well,
here's a Canadian helping out the American helping out the Canadian
band....you are thinking "whatever" :)
You probably saw the posting I wrote about the 12" to Livign in CHina. I
can scan that if you like. Only, I need to know exactly how to scan it.
I am just an amateur at it. Anyone can help? 300 dpi is way too much as
far as I know. right? I also have the ps of "I Like" (the promo) and
"Antarctica" (UK). Also the "Moonbeam" CDSingle cover as well but it's a
bit worn out.. Is this the one for the Europe release?
So anyone out there who can give me advice on scanning it...I have an
AGFA SnapScan, and it goes up to 300x600 (or is that 300x300??--my gosh,
I don't evne know?!?!?! Well I only bought it for my web page...which
reminds me, here is my URL: www.interlog.com/~daniele)

A humorous moment from ICE magazine online http://www.icemagazine.com
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, in our December 6 "News Flash," we mentioned a couple of
"Collector's Corner" items that didn't make it to the recent issue of
ICE (# 117). The first
concerned '80s new-wave act Men Without Hats; the second read as
follows:
"Warthog delivers a rough but listenable audience recording of
Metallica's Motorhead tribute set at the birthday of Lemmy Kilmister on
Live at Lemmy's
Birthday Bash 1995 (Los Angeles 12/14/95). This disc is filled out with
10 demos and rehearsals from band's self-titled album recorded in the
summer of
1990."
It should be pointed out that this is not an "official" release, and
therefore should not have been mentioned in the same breath as the
Canadian Men Without
Hats album; in fact, it was a leftover not from "Collector's Corner,"
but rather our "Going Underground" column. In other words, it is a
"gray-area" recording -
legal only in some parts of Europe.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regardless of the reason, I think the bit about "...should not have been
mentioned in the same breath..." is a classic!
The MWH text refered to is:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The Great White North now has its own counterpart to Oglio's Men
Without Hats Collection: Aquarius Records' Greatest Hats, which omits
"Messiahs
Die Young," "Hey Men," "Moonbeam" and "I Got the Message (Extended
Version)" in favor of "Freeways (Euromix)," "On Tuesday" (which features
Ian
Anderson on flute) and the band's most recent Canadian hit, "Sideways."

Today my cds finally came! Add me to the list to people who are so
amazed at the sound quality. I can't beleive how clear the Freeways
concert is. So far I'm in the middle of the Freeways Live CD (Ban The
Game) and I already listened to the first Freeways Cd. Why are the Cds
gold on top (not the label) and green underneath? GREEN? but the cds
still play awsome, so I am not worried. I've never seen green Cds
before. The covers of the CDs are desgined nicely (I like the touch with
the RoY LP cover) but the only thing I hate about the Cds is the Freeways
Live tracks fade in and out between the tracks. Oh well, you couldn't do
anything about the commercial breaks anyway. :)
So, thank you very much Mike Best and J.D. All the work paid off! Did
Ivan receive his copy? I can't wait to hear the RoY Live CD!
Oh yeah, I thought the Winnebago Song was going to be on the Cd as well.

Hello,
I've finished listening to the bootlegs and I love it. I love listening
to concerts from where I live :) Anyone know where in Toronto they
performed that concert? The funny part is in between a song you hear
some people in the audience singing "Happy Birthday". Must have been a
restaurant or night club.
Last night I asked why the CDs were green then one of my friends told me
it was because they were CDROM-Recordables. Is it possible for me to add
some songs on them (that is if I did have a recording device for
CDROMs!). Just curious.
As for the Freeways CD, I noticed the picture of Ivan on the back seemed
to have come from the original photo that came with the LP. It's a
little differnet from the one that came from my Freeways LP. Ivan looks
like he's a little angry. I wonder if differnet releases of Freeways had
different pictures?

I'm not actually sure why the CDs come out green, its probably something to
do with the tracking and the way they're cut. If you look at a CD-R thats
been cut already, looking from the middle out you'll see a colour change.
The inside bit is the actual data (if you look _really_ carefully you'll
see the lumps where the 1's and 0's are actually cut - everything is stored
in 16-bit digital remember!) whereas the outer area (usually darker) is the
virgin section. This is all different to 'normal' CDs as these are stamped
on a press (from a master copy) and the data spread over the whole disk -
that's what I read somewhere anyway :-) Most LP sized disks can take up to
74 minutes of stereo sound, some even go to 78 minutes but the
recommendation is not to put more than 630Mb of data on, which in my book
of "10Mb = 1 minute stereo" doesn't really compute properly. I've actually
cut an audio disk from my Mac that was 72 minutes so things are all wierd
in this digital world of ours...
Danny - I wouldn't try adding material if I were you! It might work but it
really depends on the machine you're using. Disks are sometimes written in
'sessions' ie built up over several cuts of the disk - Macs can usually
read these type of disks, maybe PCs can as well (inferior stuff those
though ;-) but on the Toast software that I use to write disks it states
that most normal CD players can't read multi-session disks so you would
only be able to get access to the first session on the disk - the important
MWH stuff though! I've got some aborted disks round here somewhere so I'll
give it a go tomorrow and let you now...
Henning and Kahlil - JR has sent me (posted last Saturday but still not
received!) a copy of the 3 original disks, so as he's done the first 50 I
may be in a position to duplicate another batch of CDs! I'm trying to get
a price on a bulk order of blank disks but things here in the UK are still
quite expensive. The latest price is 5.25UKSterling which is about
7.50USDollars each, and if you add the cover printing costs then it'd work
out more expensive than JR's originals. I'll keep the list posted on that
one as I know that several more people want a copy. As for the other
tracks that weren't on the original 3 disks, well I suppose I might get
around to releasing the follow-up before the end of '97... more live, a few
different mixes etc
Anyway, back to Wang Chung's CD Points On The Curve...

Hi!
First of all, put me down as another person who'd like a copy of the bootleg
CD's if anyone is making more. I missed them last time.
As I understand it, the CDs are green for the following reason (I could be
wrong on the details):
The data side of the CD is coated with some kind of organic polymer material,
which is green. The label side is coated with gold. When the data is written
to the CD, the laser burns through the organic polymer layer, so that the gold
layer shows through. In this way the CD can have alternating spaces of
reflection and absorption that translate to 0's and 1's when read with a
conventional CD player.

Thanks to all who wrote on why the Cds are green. It was so interesting
to read about it. Green polymers and gold stuff! WOW! Does that mean I
should feel bumps on the cds? I don't. I guess it's all a chemical
reaction with the laser beam and the gold.

These CDs are INCREDIBLE!!!
freeways:
Oh man! What a fantastic job! I have wanted to hear the Folk of the 80's EP
for over 12 years now. And to finally hear it (for the first time ever) on a
perfectly mastered CD...BLISS! The Freeways EP is superb as well as the Pop
and Moonbeam edits. I particularly like the +-8 minute versions.
ROY Live:
This one nearly made me weep! My favorite MWH tune, Things In My Life, finally
on a CD...and what a beautiful rendition of it as well. I also found it novel
that Ivan repeated the titles of the songs after (almost) each one. And the
quality puts most of my retail CDs to shame!
Freeways Live:
"I like" the sound of the crowd a little better on this one as opposed to ROY
(some of those whohoo's kind of hurt my ears...although had I been at that
concert, I would have been whooping it up pretty good myself). Again...just
the best quality sound.
My main CD player didn't want to cooperate with the CD's, but it doesn't
surprise me as it is very picky about what CD's it plays...this warrants usage
of my extended warranty!!! The CD's do play fine in all the other CD players I
have tried and just fine in my CDROM drive.
The labels and packaging:
Especially the labels...Great job J.R. This was obviously a labor of
appreciation of the art.
Thank you for sharing your talents with us J.R.

Just wanted to say thanks JR, the CD's do sound excellent. And the
packaging surprised me - particularly the printing on the CD itself.
Obviously a work of much time and talent.
The picture of Ivan looks particularly good on the back of the 'freeways'
CD. Is this when he was young young? Could be just a good photo I
guess.
Now on to the mystery. The Rhythm of Youth LP displays three (red and
blue) panels, each with a person (presumably a band member) on it. Ivan
is obviously easy to recognize, and the guy next to him looks like a
brother [Stefan?]. But, who is the third guy, and how come he doesn't
appear in the CD liners? A "temporary" member deemed less worthy? The
silent shadow of the late Allan McCarthy? Only two faces fit well in the
square?

Someone else mentioned it, so I thought I better bring it up as well...
The 3 CDs are great but my CD player is having trouble with them. It takes
ages finding the index track, and then once it's found that, it takes even
longer finding the start track. Once started, it'll play right the way through
without complaint.
I know it's not my CD player because it doesn't do it with any other CDs and
it a new Technics player, barely a year old.
This is a statement, not a complaint :) Anyway... it's worth the wait.
I Love the PGTW remixes. Nice idea to re-sing the words rather than just
resequence everything. Oh, and the live up-beat version of Freeways has opened
my eyes to a song I listened to, but that never really took much notice of.
Chris.

Subject: (hats) The cds (of course)
Thought I'd just throw in my two cents since everyone else has:
The cds are great! I'm very happy to see so much effort put into these cds
and commend JR and the others for the material gathered. If anyone has a
chance to buy them and hasn't, they should RIGHT AWAY. For me (at least) the
Hats are awesome live...
I'm willing to put up with the minor glitches with the tracking/drop-outs
(VERY MINOR) because the whole is SO WORTH IT.
THANKS EVERYONE!

To subscribe to hats Digest, send the command:
subscribe hats-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com". If you want to
subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-hats":
subscribe hats-digest local-hats@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "hats-digest"
in the commands above with "hats".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/hats/archive. These are organized by date.
