I'm afraid the only way to do that is broken on xmission right now. Maybe
when they upgrade to majordomo 1.94 I'll be able to set things up that way.

Subject: (hats) MWH on CD...read me!
Greetings, fellow Hatters! Apologies up front for the long post, but =
I think you'll like it...
I've been on this list for a year or so and have remained fairly =
quiet with regards to all of the talk about the Men Without Hats =
"bootleg" CDs that Mike Best was planning. As a fan myself, I had =
contacted Mike just before he lost his job about doing some graphic =
design work for the CDs.
Well, recently I acquired a 4x CD burner for my home video business =
and, with the help of Tom Norman, have compiled 3 CDs of rare =
material. Basically, we have picked up where Mike left off. The best =
news is that not only have we "compiled" this material, but I have =
already mastered them and burned CDs for myself and Tom! Yes, the =
wait is over...!
Before I continue, I must stress to everyone that I am decidedly =
ANTI-BOOTLEG in all regards. I am a low-budget film director and in =
my business, bootlegging is rampant and costs myself and my peers =
untold amounts of money each year. That said, I can happily announce =
to you that I have not put the hard work and time into mastering =
these CDs to make a profit. Like Tom with his video compilation, I =
have done this out of my love for Men Without Hats and because no one =
else is making this material available. The CDs I am about to offer =
are NOT FOR SALE OR PROFIT. Please do not contact me about purchasing =
these in any sort of quantity for resale, etc.
In fairness to Carl from Oglio I have not collected or used any of =
his material. While I have masters for a 2-on-1 RHYTHM/FOLK CD at my =
disposal, I will NOT be offering this material since the forthcoming =
release can easily be imported to the U.S. (I would rather have the =
original in nice full-color packaging, myself...)
So...what DO I have, you ask?
1. FREEWAYS
This is basically a CD version of the Canadian FREEWAYS cassette with =
some bonus material to pad out the 74 mins. Tom Norman compiled each =
cut from the best sources available to him. For instance, "Modern(e) =
Dancing," "Utter Space" and "Security (Everybody Feels Better With)" =
are taken from his rare Statik RHYTHM OF YOUTH CD. The 1980 version =
of "Antarctica" and "Freeways (Euromix)" are from virgin vinyl =
(believe me, you can't tell). Three other mixes of "Freeways" are =
from his original cassette. The other tracks are dance/extended mixes =
of "Pop Goes The World" and "Moonbeam" (3 of each).
2. RHYTHM OF YOUTH LIVE 1983
11 tracks taken from MWH's 1983 tour...
The Safety Dance
I Like
Where Do The Boys Go?
Ideas For Walls
The Great Ones Remember
Messiahs Die Young
Freeways
Security (Everybody Feels Better With)
I Got The Message
Modern(e) Dancing
Things In My Life
3. FREEWAYS LIVE 1985
14 tracks recorded live in 1985 at "Le Spectrum" Concert Montreal...
Heaven
I Know Their Name
Antarctica
Modern(e) Dancing
I Sing Last/Not For Tears
Jenny Wore Black
Freeways
Security (Everybody Feels Better With)
Ban The Game
I Like
Editions Of You
The Safety Dance
I Got The Message
Where Do The Boys Go?
This material was all taken from DAT into my Power Mac, where the =
heads and tails were trimmed and/or faded and the levels normalized =
for maximum volume without peaking. I have gone to the liberty of =
creating inserts/tray liners for the CDs, all color-coded and =
containing complete track lists and times. (The FREEWAYS CD also =
includes all of the liner notes from Tom's cassette.)
So there you have it. I'm not sure how to go about offering these. I =
had at first considered having all of you send me blank CD-Rs + =
postage stamps so that no money exchanged hands, but the two people I =
have chatted with via e-mail about this proposal find it inconvenient =
and potentially costly. So, I will work it this way:
Blank CD-Rs currently cost me $7.50 ea. With a label and colored =
paper for the inserts, you've got approx. another 50=A2. So the CDs =
will be $8 ea. plus a flat $3 for return Priority Mail to you. I =
would prefer to do them in sets (all 3 CDs at one time), which works =
out to be $27 per set with postage. I will be limiting them to 50 =
sets a'la Tom's tape...so first come, first served.
If you are interested in acquiring these CDs, e-mail privately and =
we'll make the arrangements.
Finally, if anyone knows how to get in touch with Ivan and Co., I =
would happily and at my own expense send a set of CDs to them. It's =
my hope that they will appreciate the work and the fact that their =
fans are still keeping this music alive even if greedy corporate =
types won't (no, I do not refer to Carl but whoever killed the U.S. =
release of the 2-on-1 CD).

already. So, if you want them, cast your e-mails today.
I've even been contacted by someone on the list who claims to have Ivan's

keep my fingers crossed that he will receive them favorably...

Hello again, list-folk!
We're up to 34 of the aforementioned 3-CD set as of this writing. I'm
going to start burning CDs tomorrow morning...even with a quad-speed
burner this is going to take awhile! But, fear not...I'll get to everyone
as the orders come in.
Please make sure to include your address when you send in your order...
A second connection to Ivan has also surfaced, so there's a good chance
that The Man Without A Hat will join us all in partaking of this "made by
fans for fans" collection.
Finally, I have it on good authority that some never-before-released MWH
material will be coming my way soon. So, there may yet be another CD to
add to this collection. More on this as news develops...
That is all.

Hi all,
We're up to 47 sets of the 3 CDs at this writing. So, only three more
slots left to fill. After that, I'll have to defer anyone else until I
get the others filled (although I have been contacted by someone who's
offered to help burn addt'l CDs, so that's an option as well).
If I have contacted you with the price and address to send the $$ to,
then you are confirmed and don't need to do anything else.
If anyone else wants this set, there's only 3 more spaces left...!

These are great! Those of you in line, they're well worth the wait.
Excellant sound quality (I am fairly easy to please, but these pass my
full-volume headphones test without sign of cassette warble), great
packaging! I was pleasantly surprised to see the labeling on the cd itself.
Obviously a labor of love! And I finally got to hear a live version of one
of my favorite songs: Ideas for Walls. I have only one (bizarre) request.
For some strange reason ever since the days of Folk 3 I have had a desire to
see the Hats logo on a purple background. If there are any more
fan-generated releases forthcoming, please consider a purple cover. (The
colors used were, of course, good choices. Especially Freeways.)

You Men Without Hats fans are in for a treat! I just received my CD's
today and they are absolutely fantastic! The care that went into the
packaging down to the mastering is just incredible - the detail put into
this package is a labor of love for one of the best bands the world has
ever known - or at least us on this list :)
I haven't listened to everything yet but the quality is quite impressive.
I'm playing them back on my $1700 Genelec studio monitors and the clarity
is impeccable.
Thanks J.R. for all you've done to make this possible! At long last I
have some of the rarest MWH stuff on CD. Now if that 2-fer would just
hurry and come out!!!

Today ina used record store, I came across the 12" of "Living In China".
It costs $12. I was going to buy it only to scan the cover (I like
having a collection of picture sleeves <grin>), but I don't think I want
to keep it. I already have the song, etc. I wouldn't mind the picture
disk! So, I will buy it (and then scan it) if someone here on the list
wants it. So, I'll buy it for them. Or maybe a trade? Anyone have an
extra picture disc?
better for the American fans here since the US dollar is better the

So all I lose is the price of postage which shouldn't be that much.

Well. We've got a bootleg video of Men Without Hats (2 hrs.). We all got
our rare footage together and copied it onto one tape, basically.
Here is the tape: I. Freeways Concert Video (Canadian TV) - 60 min
II. 8 MWH videos (SD,IL,WDTBG,PGTW,Moon,21st,HM,Side) - 30min
III. Various interviews - 30min
not in that order but its all there.
To the list:
Since there are many people new to the list who want a copy, can someone
make some copies from their tape? When I hit 50, I am sending the original
tapes back. I will make some copies off of my copy, but I could use some
help. I guess its GOOD that i've got like 20 more people who want a copy.
This means that we are all exposing the band a bit more.

Awhile ago I posted and said I was looking to sell my copy. I watched it

with the tape, it's just doesn't have much of the era of MWOH that I like.
So if anyone wants it send me (not the list) mail.

I am in the last group set to receive a master video compilation from Tom.
When I receive mine, I will be willing to make further copies of it for
those who are either new to the list or could not make the first 50.
I have 2 HiFi VCRs that are each about 1 year old and in very good condition.
To receive a copy from me, you should mail to me a self-addressed, stamped
videotape mailer (with at least $3.20 (US) postage stuck on it) along with
a check or money order valued at $3.00. I will use the money to buy a good
quality videotape for you onto which I will copy the MWH material prior to
mailing it in the mailer you sent for me to use.

subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-hats":
subscribe hats-digest local-hats@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "hats-digest"
in the commands above with "hats".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/hats/archive. These are organized by date.
