Subject: (hats) New hatter!
Date: 02 Oct 1998 03:59:44 -0000
Hello all!
In keeping with traditional mailing list decorum, allow me to introduce
myself! I've been a fellow hatter for 15 years now and have since been
lucky enough to acquire much rare MWH vinyl such as the hour long Montreal
Mirror interview from 1988 on LP, a few Argentina 7", the Safety Dance
shaped disc and the picture disc LP of ROY.
I briefly owned the FOTE CD in my teen years for $12.99 on the MCA
label, but promptly returned it for it didn't include the listed 12" mix of
Where Do The Boys Go. I've been kicking myself ever since!
On a lighter note, I was fortunate enough to see Ivan open for Duran
Duran in Toronto in December. I made quite a nice stereo boot of it as well
(for personal use only of course, although I would love to trade for any MHW
video, even Safety Dance). Speaking of trading video, I have MWH's
appearance on the Ross Schaffer show doing PGTW in 1987, and also a video of
the short-lived US Top Of The Pops appearance from the same year if anyone
is interested.
For Gary Numan fans, I run the Gary Numan North American Fan Club. I
use to publish monthly fanzines but these days it exists for all to enjoy on
the WWW at:
http://members.aol.com/PolareBear/Machman.html
For Numan traders, I have hundreds of live shows on audio and video if
you are interested.
Anyway, greetings to all and I look forward to membership on this
awesome list.

Riddle me THIS, hatters!
I noticed that CF's new CD is titled: Matter... the picture on the cover looks
like (whom I would suspect to be) Jaqueline... if this is so, would the title
of the original release: Excerpts from the Matter, Vol. III, be a abstractly-
veiled reference to Sahara?
Not like it matters (argh!), but curious just the same ;-D

I keep reading that Myke is supplying all you guys in the US/Canada with
copies of the 2fer as he lives in the UK where it is available. I also live
in the UK but have been unable to find it anywhere. Could Myke (or anyone
for that matter) let me know where he is obtaining it so that I can get a
copy for myself.
Also, while I'm here - great bootlegs (although the Washington gig is a
pretty ropey performance) but are there any recordings out there of concerts
from the P.G.T.W / 21st Century era. As great as they are, you can only have
so many recordings of the same 10 or so songs and I'd love to hear some live
stuff from the later albums. The version of Jenny wore black on the
Spectrum concert is superb.
Keep those hats off!

The November '98 PCGamer magazine mention MWH. It's in a 'sneak
preview' of the upcoming game release 'Interstate '82.' The author is
slamming 80's music, including the Safety Dance. There is a picture
of the Rhythm of Youth album cover, and a clip from the video
(complete with midget.) I can't tell if the song's actually connected
with the game or not.

Subject: (hats) all boots available
Date: 13 Oct 1998 08:51:46 -0600
All the artwork for the new boots are finally printed. I had some delays
with the printer and also my computer. Last week my 19 inch monitor made a
loud POP and smoke came out of the top so I was a week without a monitor
until I bought another one.
Anyway all cds are available now. If you were one of the ones that have
already sent me a check and have not received any cds you should see it in
the next 10-15 days or so (about three people. I ran out of artwork for
certain CDs and could not ship them out). Just so everyone knows I do not
cash any checks until the cds are in the mail.
I have all the artwork for the CDs so wait time should not be very long.
The newest CD to the collection is CD #10 which is a CD-ROM that can only be
played in your computer. This CD has all the boots on it (Cds 1-9) in mp3
format. After messing around with PC and MAC format I have decided that I
will not make a single CD that will play in both. I have been able to burn a
PC and a MAC session but I can not have them point to the same data on the
disc. So if you want the CD-ROM be sure to tell me if you want MAC or PC
format. There are also a few bonus tracks and some music videos on the CD.
The bonus tracks are covers done by other bands. There is nothing extra on
the CD that can not be downloaded from my website at www.holdman.com/mwh
Now is the time to order any of the boots that you want. All of them are
available including the New ones. Here is a list
CD1_Freeways
CD2_Freeways_Live
CD3_Rhythm_of_Youth_Live
CD4_BBC_Rock_Hour
CD5_MWHdemos
CD6_Alberta_Live
CD7_WashingtonDC
CD8_Ivan_Live_1997
CD9_21st_Century_Promo
CD10 - CD-ROM of all boots in mp3 format (Specify if you want MAC or PC)
If you need a complete track listing visit my web site at
www.holdman.com/mwh
You can download everything there if you dont want to order any cds. I am
not really into this to make money but people have requested if they can
just get the CD instead of having to download the mp3s and to burn their own
CD.
CD10 is pretty much a copy of everthing that is on my website.
All CDs are $15 each (including the CD-ROM) which include Professional
Printed Color artwork.
Shipping is included in the price but if shipping is outside of the united
states add another $5 to your order.
If you want you can email me if you have any questions or you can just go
ahead and send me a check. Send it to
Richard Holdman
112 north 300 east

I prefer checks instead of CASH but will accept anything. No checks are
cashed until the cds are in the mail. This way if I die or get in a accident
and I have cashed your check you should get the cds still.
Well thats abouts it. Oh.. I did use some audio tools to remove tape hiss
and other noises in CDs 6 and 7. I used Sound Forges Audio Restoration took
kit. What you do is take a part of the recording that has no music or
anything else on it and make a noiseprint. It then compares this against all
the music and takes it out. I was pretty surprised on how well it work. The
mp3s are the site are currently the older ones with the tape hiss but I will
be putting the new ones up sometime this week.

Subject: (hats) Need to find double-cd

Hi, I'm new to the list and a fairly new/old MWH fan. I got hooked on
(what else?) "The Safety Dance" back when it first came out when I was
only a little kid. It was on a compliation tape a cousin made for me
which included other classics like "Putting On The Ritz" by Taco and
"Beat It" by MJ. That's what basically got me into pop music and
synth-pop in particular (I program synths and I'm a big Erasure/Gary
Numan fan). I had basically forgetten about the group until I took a
trip to Montreal two summers ago and noticed the "Greatest Hats" in a
local HMV. I got that and the U.S. version ("Collection") and I recently
got Ivan's album. Now I'm dying to buy the "Rhythm of Youth/Folks of the
80's III" double-cd but I can't find it anywhere. It's not listed at
Oglio's site nor any other site I could find. If anyone has a spare copy
or can point me in the right direction in buying one, I'd very much
appreciate it.
Take care,
Tom

Greetings Hatters,
Just joined the list about a month ago.....pretty cool. I've been a Hats
fan for about 10 years now. I own ROY on cassette, FOTE III on cassette,
PGTW, 21st Century, and Sideways on CD.
My question is this: Why is it so hard to get a copy of ROY and FOTE III on
CD? I know they are rare, but there has to be someone out there that has
these CDs or knows someone who does and has access to a CD ROM burner. If I
had these CDs, I would burn copies for everyone (seriously).
I'll probably pick up the 2-fer soon from my London connection, so it's not
a huge deal right now. I would just love to own all MWH albums, that's all.
Thanks for reading,
-Ian

My connect in London is having trouble finding the ROY/FOTE3 double disc.
It may have been discontinued. (I hope not.)
I took a ride with a one way ticket...

Hi all,
i have a copy of the original Rhythm of youth (with the bonus tracks--FOTE
Part 1) on cd. If anyone actually does want a copy of it on cdr, let me
know. Although, most of you may have the 2 fer 1. I'm not sure if that was
pressed from the original cd though, since I know some of the bonus tracks
on the Greatest Hats collection were from vinyl sources. The original cd is
mastered from the original master recordings, and is one of the first cds
ever (I think...) I'm suprised it's held up this long since lazlo said some
of the early cds rotted...
Take care,

The 2fer sounds BETTER than the original Folk and ROY CDs.
They WERE mastered from the original CDs, then they were re-EQed and tweaked
to sound as good as the 1987- CDs.
The Greatest Hats and Collection CDs were not mastered from the original
CDs, thats why they sound "old". But my point is the 2fer is excellent
sound quality, unlike the others.

Hello....
Has anyone noticed that there is a big knowledge gap between the new list
members and the old list members?
I am talking about the people who have joined in the last year or so. The
new people have no idea what the list has done in the past 5 years or so.
I think we should start posting info about
1. How to find 2fer CDs
2. How to get Freeways CD
3. How to get fan concert CDs etc.
4. How to get Men Without Hats videotape w/ concert and all videos.
I for one would be happy to help any of the new folks find rare stuff.
Beleive me, this list has already got it all. Just post what you do have,
and the listmembers will help ya get the stuff you DONT have. :-)
I sure will, anyway.

Subject: (hats) How to Get The 2 for 1 CD

For thos new to the list......
Oglio released the Men Without Hats "Rhythm of Youth/Folk of the '80s" 2
for 1 CD _outside_ the USA in mid-February 1997. It has not been sold in
stores, mail order only. We are still trying to get permission to
release it in the USA and Canada. Still no word yet.
CMC International/EMI Records just released the companion CD in Europe
called "The Best of Men Without Hats." This CD is esentially the same thing
but with
different artwork and slightly fewer tracks. I have a copy of this CD in my
hands now. The part number is CMC8231662 in case you find a place to
special order it.
If you are _outside_ the USA or Canada I can sell you one of Oglio's
directly. Otherwise, you must find it as an import or buy it from a
friend overseas.
For those outside North America:
The CD is $15.98 US dollars + $6 US dollars shipping. I suggest a credit
card for the best exchange rate. Second best would be an international
money order made out in US Dollars.
*** Credit Card (Visa/MC/Amex) ***
e-mail to info@oglio.com or fax at (310) 798-3728
Include card number, expiry date, billing address, shipping address,
telephone number.
*** Money order ***
Oglio Records
PO Box 404-MWH241
Redondo Beach CA 90277
Don't for get to include your shipping address.

Yes. This is also why we don't want to go around making CDRs of Rhythm of
Youth and Folk of the Eighties.
Oglio Records needs to sell as many of the 2fer CDs as possible. If they
sell well:
1. They won't be deleted
2. They could be released in US and Canada
And like I said, You can't beat the quality of the 2fer CD. Also the
artwork is EXACTLY the same artwork as the original issue CDs. Oglio
records made the reissues perfect, basically.
If you live in USA or Canada, european listmembers have already stocked up
on some of these just for you. There's your friend in Europe.

moonbeam, in the 21st, hey men, sideways
C. various TV appearences and interviews 1/2 hour
Video#2 - Ivan
A. Open Your Eyes video
B. Personal Camcorder footage of list members meeting Ivan, Ivan concert
soundcheck, Ivan concert (1st 3 songs) all hi-fi stereo.
C. Ivan TV appearances including in studio 3 song concert on Musique Plus
(Quebec MTV)
OK. Are you interested in a copy of these?
Where are you located sean?

an e-mail (Comments and Questions), and can not believe how many of you
responded to me. You all have been incredibly helpful in soothing my
frustration with trying to find MWH CDs.

More than a year ago...we had people on this list rank their top 5
or so favorite MWH songs to listen to. I think we should try it again now
that we've been exposed to all this new material.
Of course, mine, as well as much of your favorites, I'm sure,
change everyday. But maybe pick your five favorites as of now.
Tell whether it's a live version or studio or demo. I'll think of mine and
respond back later.

Hi,
Sean Smid and Paul Go. Sorry for the BIG delay.
Don't worry. I have both of your addresses written down. So you will get
your videotapes soon.
I have been slacking on this because my one and only television just broke.
On the other hand, there is no reason why I can't dupe the videotapes
without it. I am going to use the auto tracking (its quite nice) and listen
to the audio on the stereo to make sure everything is ok.
Going to get your blanks now.
If anyone else wants the Men Without Hats videos,
send me your mailing address.
I'll get you down and then I'll send your videos.
