Hi gang.
Except for Simon Berthiaume, I didn't have any answer regarding the fact that
I'm stuck with my old Windows 3.1 and I can't convert Wav file to MP3.
What I have to convert is remixes of Open your eyes, the brady bunch (weird al
safety dance) and other stuff from mitsou.
PLease let me know
Francis

Francis,
Do you mind using a DOS program?
I've got one that is command line driven, (not everyone's cup of tea)
Let me know, I'll get it to ya...

Hello everyone - I thought I would update everyone on the website and Cds that
you should be about to order in a couple weeks. I have been out of town the
last 5 days (in San Fran and picked up a pop goes the world record for 99cents
at a record store) and I will be leaving again tomorrow for another 5 days.
I am trying to get the other cds in mp3 format on the website by tomorrow if
everything goes right.

This is the 21st century promo disc with some interviews on it. There are
pictures of the front and back cover so you will have to download the JPG first
to see what tracks are what. I will be renaming the tracks and putting cd 6 on
the site when I get back in 5 days. Until then you can download the new files.

Hello,
At a local record (in Salt Lake City, UT) they had a copy of a
record that had a Men Without Hats live BBC recording on one side and A
Flock of Seagulls live BBC recording on the other side for $300. Does
anybody know anything about this? What is on the record and such? It
didn't have any artwork, just a plain white cover and back with a hole
in the middle where you could see the writing on the record.

Sean.
That record is $300 because it is deleted, therefore a collector's item.
If you are just interested in the music itself, and have an MP3 player on
your computer, check out:
http//www.holdman.com/mwh
The whole MWH part of the LP is on that site.
You can download and listen first, before buying that LP.
Oh yeah, that is CD#4.
There are also other MWH rare CDs on that site too.

Did i get you right? You are looking for a program to convert waqvs into mp3s,
running DOS/Windows? Try to find an old version of the DOS-Programm l3enc. The
new ones do not convert long files, but the older ones do well (with 112kbit/s).
I could sned you a copy, but i am stuck in a hospital for the next 3 or 4
weeks....
Maybe you can find something in the net, if not please contact me aagain, later.

Date: 12 Sep 1998 11:33:23 -0500
To all:
This question is only partly hats related, but here goes: I've been
thinking of creating my own MWH page at some point. I've always used a
monitor resolution setting of 640 x 480 when designing my web pages, but
I've recently had several people tell me that I ought to start
formatting them for proper viewing at a resolution of 800 x 600, since
that is now allegedly the most popular "viewing standard". If that's
the case, I want to create my hats page, as well as others, at the
higher resolution. I'd much appreciate any advice that the list's other
web authors could offer on this matter.

Subject: (hats) I found a MWH poster! (kind of)
Date: 13 Sep 1998 13:33:09 -0400 (EDT)
Hi everyone,
I was in a record store (where they sell 45s) yesterday and came across one
of "O Sole Mio". It had a picture sleeve and it said "Limited Edition
Fold-Out Picture Pack". The sticker on the sleeve of the record (the little
bag the store keeps the 45 in to protect it from any damage) says "Last
copy" but I don't know if that means the last in the world or just in the
store :D Anyway, I guess this comes close to being a genuine MWH poster.
The picture is interesting. It reminds me of one of U2 albums (the one
where their faces are close-up, the black bars on top and bottm of the
picture). The picture is in black and white and everyone is standing on the
roof of a building. Everyone is at different distances from the camera. From
left to right: a smiling older man playing the accordian (kind of reminds
me of the picture of Ivan's father on one of the websites), a person who
appears to be the little guy in the Saftey Dance video (he looks like Ivan a
bit!) complete with the t-shirt but wearing a bandana, jeans, and jacket
liek Ivan. Followed by Bruce Murphy with violin then the Jenny persona (the
older one), le Bonhomme (no drums), Ivan holding a baby, Stefan wearing the
Freeways concert t-shirt under his white jacket, a little girl (I guess it's
the younger "Jenny") in a ballerina costume, then a toddler then another guy
(I guess it's Colin?). No one is looking in the same direction (although,
most are wearing sunglasses or a big bonhomme head!). I can scan this for
anyone who would like a copy.
When folded, on the back of the picture sleeve are the lyrics and a balck
and white picture of Ivan. The front has a really big O. I guess it's a
play on the usual no hats logo without the slash and hat guy. B-side is
"Lose My Way".
====
I was in Tower records yesterday and picked up a copy of their free magazine
and saw a page ad by Oglio Records (hi Carl!). Tina Louise made an
album?!!??!?! For those who don't recognize her name, she played "Ginger"
on "Gilligan's Island".

I guess the above sounds pretty vague to anyone who hasn't heard CD9 yet. Let
me elaborate. The 21st Century promo single contains an interesting little
number (8, to be precise), which is a little snip of Ivan explaining why he
dropped the hats logo. He says it gives off a negative energy similar to that
of a NO PARKING sign. He goes on to mention that we get far too many of these
negative vibes everywhere we look. (Hmmm, someone should write a song about
signs being everywhere saying do this and don't do that and can't you read the
sign.........naw, it'll never work.) Furthermore, he goes on to tell us that a
group of racist Jamaicans are now using the hats logo (or a reasonable
facsimile) to ban Rastafarians from certain establishments. Rastafarians are the
Jamaican residents with African ancestry. That use of the hats logo was the
final straw and Ivan will never use the symbol again, end of discussion.
Where does that leave us devout MWHer's who have for so long been blinded by
this crazy evil logo. It really sounds like Ivan strongly believes that the
whole logo thing was a big mistake on his part and wishes he never used it in
the first place. Now, I think about all those times I proudly displayed it in
public and wonder how many African Jamaican's I've offended or perhaps put some
poor suicidal soul over the edge because he/she saw one too many "DON'T DO THAT"
signs.
Gee, Ivan, we were only dancing if we wanted to....no harm in that. Is there?
Senz
p.s. to my knowledge, moose has nothing against Rastafarians and nor do I

Excuse my ignorance but I fail to make a connection between Rastafarians

It's hard for me to see any real connection either!
But Ivan did see that connection and as a result it became a reason for dropping
the logo.
He explains this clearly on his "21st Century" CD promo.
It's a bit weird but who knows, maybe there's some method to his madness.

Well, (and I'm only suggesting a possibility here) that situation seems like Ivan
is more or less eluding to the logo and not really associating himself with it.
It's like he might be saying, "there's pop music playing at this party", or "I'm
the guy who used to be MWH". I don't think he's saying "this logo represents me
or my band", though. Or, maybe he's just trying to make us diehard hatters feel
good! Or hey, better yet, maybe he's changed his mind!!! (again)

Subject: (hats) Useless Stats on MWH mp3 web page
Date: 18 Sep 1998 10:13:53 -0600
I just looked at my logs for my web site and here are some stats.
These stats are taken from the past 3 months for my mwh page at
www.holdman.com/mwh
Total data downloaded - 17.5 gig
Total Hits to the site - 163928
Total amount of people that have visted the site - 7130
Most popular Album downloaded - CD2_freeways_live
(Downloaded 1050 times)
2nd most popular Album downloaded - CD1_Freeways
(Download 1010 times)
Average amount of data that gets downloaded per day - 292 meg
Average amount of people that visit the site per day - 80
As you can see the site is getting hit really hard. It also comes as no surprise
that the most popular song downloaded is the safety dance. Every CD that has
a version of the safety dance is downloaded the most.
The version of the safety dance on CD2 seems to be the most popular version
being downloaded by 1311 different people in the past 90 days.
You can also access these songs via ftp at ftp.holdman.com using mwh for the
username and password. I have not looked at the logs for these yet but I am
sure it adds at least another 100megs
It seems like the webpage is being spread across the web. Recently I visted a
web site (http://www.audioforge.net/ - click on the rare and live links) that has
a list of several sites with hard to find stuff. I saw a link for Men without hats
and clicked on it and it took me to my site. :)
It the future I might not be able to handle the load of downloads when it starts
to increase. Is there anybody out there that has a fast connection and lots of
disk space (about 300 megs). This way we could mirror my site and help
distribute the load. your server would have to be able to serve about 200-300
megs per day. If you are intrested in becoming a mirror site please send me a
e-mail.

ATTENTION ALL HATTERS!!
The Men Without Hats Guitar Chord Archive is finally available!
It's taken a long time but now it's here and I encourage everyone to check
it out. It's not just for guitarists but all fans and musicians.
Now you can pick up your guitar, piano, ukelele or whatever and play just
like Ivan, Stefan and Colin.
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~freyce/music/
Since I tend to be a bit of a lurker I'll take this chance to re-introduce
my self to the list.
My name is Christopher Frey, or Chris or "C.Frey" or just Frey.
I'm a senior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. I grew up in
the east side suburbs of Detroit, have played guitar for about 8 years and
love MWH. I'm majoring in History but have applied to U-M's School of
Information to do archives, digital manuscript preservation, or something
like that.
I think Ivan is a brilliant writer, poet, singer, musician and hope this
project will spread the awesome sounds of MWH. (btw, finally got the
Spell and love it! "Chain reaction" is amazing. a lot of it sounds like
the so-called "early synth era" of MWH! you know before the days of 21st
Century and Sideways which made me realize "hey, we could TAB this..."
;-) )
Anyway, please check it out, and if you have comments, please reply to me
directly as I get the sometimes slow digest version of the list.
HATLESSLY,
C.Frey

So the one thing I've always been a little confused with is the
whole FOTE I and Freeways. Did the Freeways LP come out in 85....5 years
after its original release?
Was this a remix of the one on the FOTE LP?
And in the Freeways Live '85 in Montreal, why are they promoting
Freeways and not Fote III.
Did the Freeways LP sell at all?
Can you still get it? (other than the bootleg)
One more question....what is this new project Ivan is working
on...with Rational Youth.
One more question...sorry...but on the bootlegs, we have remixes
of PGTW and Moonbeam from the singles. Were there any other singles that
have remixes on them that we could somehow obtain? Any chance of getting
the IVAN singles on there?
Ok...I've fed the group some questions.

<<So the one thing I've always been a little confused with is the whole FOTE

Apparently this is the case as the Freeways "EP" is copyrighted 1985. I'm
not sure about the history of the different mixes of Freeways (the song),
but the Freeways "EP" was the first time they were released.
<<Was this a remix of the one on the FOTE LP?>>
I don't think they were remixed, but Antartica is slightly different on the
original FOTE...it fades out completely as opposed to the abrupt ending that
it has on Freeways.
<<Did the Freeways LP sell at all? Can you still get it? (other than the

I had never seen it in any store until last weekend on a trip to Vancouver

fainted. I may be wrong, but it is my impression that this cassette is quite
rare.

Dear Richard,
thanks for a great site!!!
The band I used to play in (I=92m a guitarist/singer) used to play Safety
Dance about 15 years ago. I split the band three years ago, and next
saturday the band (that=92s been together for 25 years) plays the last
gig, and the guys asked me to sit in for a set and do "Safety Dance" and
some other songs.
We have a rehearsal tomorrow, so I was trying to chase down this song as
I didn=92t remember all the changes and words. Yahoo > music search > Men
Without Hats links and there I was!! Safety Dance in about four
different live versions. Great!
We might record that last gig, so if you want me to, I can send you a
mp3 file of our version.
Thanks and keep up the great work.

In 1980, MWH released FOTE part I. 4 songs on an 10 inches vinyl.
After the success of ROY (who was suppose to be named FOTE part II until one
month before the release), and FOTE part II, Marc Durand (former MWH manager)
decided to release the very first vinyl with different remixes of Freeway.

I own "The Very Best of Men Without Hats".
It is a compilation of some songs of "Folk Of The 80's III" and "Rhythm Of
Youth".
It is (C) and (P) 1997 by CMC Records under license of Oglio Records.
Nothing new, but a must to have.
The Cover Art is not much different from "The COllection".
The MWH Logo is a little bit smaller and the background is a little bit more
orange.
Very interesting are the Words on the inside which are:
Dancing and singing they came back in 1982, who were these strangers without
headwear causing the floors to move to a most unusual swaying rhythm?
"You can dance if you want to..." of course we could, we didn't need them to
tell us that, but what exactly was, or indeed is The Safetay Dance and does
it involve the wearing of a condom or was it a more serious anti nuclear
message as hinted in the video?
Very little is written in the history books about the band from canada, who
paved the way for alternative rock from this part of the world - would
alanis morisette have received the same support without them?
Canada after all isn't renowned for it's international names in Rock, Bryan
Adams, Celine Dion, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell are not many considering the
Counry's proximity to the USA. So I put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and
puffing on my pipe this is what i discovered:
Men without hats were formed in Montreal - Canada in 1980, the brainchild of
singer Ivan and drummer Jeremy Arrobas, not the most usual set up for a
group - one singer and one drummer so thats where the synth machine came in
very handy and also explains their rather distinctive sound.
Men Without Hats' first release was an EP on their own label titled "FOT
80's", not only did this grab a lot of attention in their homeland, Stiff
Records in London, well known for their love of the creative, also released
it in Britain as a single along with an edited version of "Antarctica".
It's a highly priced collector's item these days. Just after this Jeremy
decided he had had enough of life in the fast lane of pop stardomand quit,
leaving Ivan to write the songs and work with brothers Stephan and Colin
Doroschuk joined by Allan McCarthy on drums.
In 1983 MWH released the annoyingly catchy singe "Safety Dance", whoch
became a huge hit both in the clubs and on the radio, reaching No. 3 in the
USA and No. 6 in The UK, not only launching the group in Europe but a new
label - Statik Records too. Following the success of "Safety Dance" their
debut album "Rhythm Of Youth" saw the light of day; it was a mayor success
in the USA, reaching No. 14 in the Billbord Chart.
Three more singles "Living in China", "I Got The Message" and the full
version of "Antarctica" were released from the album, all of which have
become cult classics.
MWH's second album "Folk Of The 80's Part III" (whatever happened to Part
II?) was incredibly well received by the rock critics and their fans alike
and contained the hit single "Where Do The Boys Go?". All this was pre CD
and a picture disc of the second album is also reported to exist on vinyl.
The CD you are holding marks the first time that "ROY" and "FOEIII" has ever
been released as a double package, in fact neither album has ever been
properly released on CD before.
A strictly limited edition of 500 copies of each was made in the UK in the
late 80's - today they sell for between $700 - $1000 each.
Treasure your copy of two of the finest albums ever produced in canada -
maybe one day this too will become a valuable collectors item!
Aouch, think this was my largest EMail ever written.
For those who didn't know the cover inside - text, hope you enjoyed it.
For those who did know the text, think you read it again...
OK, best regards

This release was issued in the Far East last year, and is the first two
albums without Mother's Opionion, Ban the Game, the Great Ones Remember
Reprise and one other (I like, I think). A couple of things firstly I
have never seen any mention of Antartica on the Stiff Label, I have read
a couple of discographies of Stiff records, and none mention it., has
anyone ever seen it ? Also if anybody wants my copy of FOTE3 on CD for
$700 it's their's !
Also this month Men Without Hats are featured in the UK's Q magazine in
the 'Where are they now' section featuring an interview with Ivan and is
very, well fairly interesting. Apparently Collin Doroschuk worked in a
circus for a while washing dishes for a 'dose of reality'. The thing
about Where are they now series in Q is that the featured artist's alway
talk up what they've been up to, so Ivan mentions he's formed the UFOria
record label but fails to say that so far it hasn't released anything.
Does anybody want me to transcibe the whole article ?

Hello Laura,
While searching for MWH sites, I over-came a F.A.Q. that mentioned
that you were selling or distributing MWH t-shirts that had the logo
on the front and "The Great Ones Remember" on the back. It would be
great if I could purchase one of those from you. If you are still
giving them away, just tell me the price and I will figgure out a way
to buy one from you. Thanks a lot!! I hope you "Get The Message" and

Hello MWOH FANS!!
I'm brand new to the list. I'm a big 80's music fan. I am hoping one of you
can help me with my quest to find a MWOH CD that may or may not exist.
Supposedly, Oglio records put out a 2 for 1 CD with the MWOH albums Rhythm of
Youth and Folk of the 80's on it. It did not get released in the US due to
legalities, but it has been reported that it was released outside the US. I
can find no website that sells imports that lists this CD. Can anyone tell me
if this is true, does this 2fer CD exist? If it does, can anyone help me get a
copy? I will gladly pay all costs involved or I could work a trade for some
CD that one of you are looking for. I have a CDR, and I do have some great
rare b-side comps of Swervedriver, the FIXX, the Charlatans UK, Radiohead,
Curve, Catherine Wheel, Suede to trade. Please, if anyone can give me any
info, it will be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!

Yes, this CD does exist. According to a friend of mine it is availible in
the UK.
I do not know if it is availible in Canada, but I would say try giving
the HMV
MegaStore a call, and they may be able to import it. At one point I had
the
number but I cannot find it right now... but fear not.
You can obtain the phone number by calling 1-800-555-1212
and asking for "HMV Megastore, Canada"
I was able to obtain "Sideways" & "...21st Century" through them....>8)

Hi hatters!
Some folks have asked about the 2-fer and T's. I'm the T lady and
have become the surrogate 2-fer person.
The 2-fer is not available in the US or Canada, but I arranged to get
some via Mike Best in England (you're a god, Moose!). If you are
interested in a 2-fer, email me privately *next week*. I'm in the
middle of a pinch at work, a vet crisis, a remodeling my kitchen
crisis, and I'm going out of town this weekend. AAAAACK!
T's come in 2 colors (white or gold) and 2 sizes (XL or XXL). I am
currently putting people on a waiting list, since some people who
ordered in April then left on school holidays or whatever and
haven't picked uptheir orders. Again, email me privately *next
week*. I can't deal with any more stress right now.
Thx for being understanding that I haven't jumped all over these
emails before . . .
:-) Laura

I remember walking into a record store in 1985 and seeing the Freeways LP
and cassette at the front of the store as a new item. They wanted like
$24.99 for it. I never bought it because it was so expensive and had only a
few tracks. Personally I think it was a bad marketing move and sent MWH down
the road to obscurity.
Rod
In 1980, MWH released FOTE part I. 4 songs on an 10 inches vinyl.
After the success of ROY (who was suppose to be named FOTE part II until one
month before the release), and FOTE part II, Marc Durand (former MWH
manager)
decided to release the very first vinyl with different remixes of Freeway.

I also think that sometimes ivan's voice sounds rather notsogood when he
performs live. i do not know why. notice on the video tape with some excerpts
of the sideways show live how his voice is rather ....well- unmelodic?! sounds
kind of like he is sort of talking and singing at the same time. does it in
the ivan show that was recorded also. listening to david bowie doing it right
now too.
Ivan also messes up lines regularly live. he does it in the freeways show.
Cause the way he writes is he says very similar things in different parts of
the song.
example: we can dance if we want to we can leave your friends behind
" " we've got all your
life and mine
" " night is young and
so am i
and so on
it can be difficult to remember which one goes where, especially when one is
in a state of mind sort of outside of time.............
just my thoughts on the matter.
anyone elses?

personally, i think that half of it is artistic licence to purposefully
alter lyrics for concert... i mean no one want's to see a concert
that is exactly like the record, right..? sure he could have simply
screwed up the lyrics (alot of bands do) but ask yourself if it
could have been intentional... it could change your perspctive

I too have noticed that Ivan has occasional "voice trouble" and misses
lines live. Could he maybe suffer from at least mild stage fright? If you
watch some live recordings he looks uncomfortable, misses words, and even
appears to shake sometimes.
If memory serves, at the Toronto show in 1997 he got several lines mixed
up, particularly in Open Your Eyes. I also think he didn't look very
comfortable up there.
I dunno, maybe he does like to mix things up a little for variety or
artistic license.
Any more thoughts??

I have always been thinking that MWH live performances are
very good, including Ivan's singing. I think that the way
he sings differently (thinking more about phrasing (changing tones etc)
than mixing lines) in concert compared to the studio versions
is because he puts more emotion into the singing and I really like that.
I was really happily surprised by the good live performance of MWH
when I first heard of it (the boots). Many other synth band from the
same period are not very talented live musicians and I had a fear that
would go for MWH as well.
The mixing of lines though, might, to some degree, be because of
that Ivan doesnt manage to remember correctly. But sometimes
I beleive it's intentional.
