Hey!
I guess people at Tox are soooooo busy with other artists than Ivan. Did you
notice that this is the SAME information that we are reading since 1 year?

Nobody ever really responded back to the Walk on Water comment. Is Men
Without Hats talking about themselves in that song....saying "We never walked
on water" and throughout the whole song? THat's how I've taken it.
And I was also wondering what your favorite song is...on any of the MWH or
Ivan CD's. Mine is the Freeways Live version of "I Like."
Anybody else?

My favorite song is "Heaven" from the second boot. I'm still wondering if
there's a studio version available somewhere...

Hard to choose!!!! I'd say "I Got The Message", "I Like", "Security",
"Eurotheme", "Where Do The Boys Go", "Safety Dance in the 21st Century", I
love the demo for "Living In China" and "The Rhythm of Youth". I also like
"Moonbeam", "Walk On Water", and "SOS". Of course there are a lot of others
like "The Safety Dance", "Antarctica", and yes, the live version of "I Like"
rocks big time! For Ivan songs, I like "Open Your Eyes", "1972", and the
beginning to "Superbadgirls".
Maybe "Walk On Water" is about the group's popularity and possible pressure
to impress and conform to everyone. Maybe it has something to do with
record contracts. It might tie in with "Messiahs Die Young" where I think
it's about Ivan not wanting to be a huge pop star, all he wants is to have
fun making music.
How about your least favourite song? One track which stands out is
"Messiahs Die Young". It never appealed to me. It is rather dull and it
got on my nerves after two listens. That's it! The rest are good. Even
the ones on 21st Century! :D

If I remember correctly, Ivan by his own admission has many times stated that
"Walk on Water" was an insight to what the band was going through leading up
to,during, and after the "Safety Dance" period, ie: the unexpected *and ill-
prepared for* meteoric rise to fame, the perks, the unrealistic expectations
*by the media, public, management and band alike*, the pedestals, the eventual
backlash, the blah, blah blah...*SNII-I-II-P!*
And I was also wondering what your favorite song is...on any of the MWH or
Ivan CD's.
I seem to keep coming back to Security, Gravity *Is My Enemy*, In the name of
Angels, and All We Do, as well as most of the instrumentals...as for Ivan's
solo work, i would have to narrow it down to SBG and You...
There...Happy Now?

So hard to pick just one favorite MWH song. Each one means so much in a
different way, but if I had to pick just one, I would have to say that
Folk of the 80's is a great tune, and by far, one of the best. As for
worst tune, I would have to say that saying a MWH tune is bad... is
sac-religious. Agreed?

Hello!
Since some new people joined the list recently (or a few weeks ago) and this
list has been quiet unfortunately, I thought it would be nice to
re-introduce ourselves. So here I go....
My name is Daniele Rossi and I live in Toronto, Canada. I'm 24 years old and
I'm currently looking for work in website design. I've been a Men Without
Hats fan since I was 9 and heard "The Safety Dance" on the radio. I became
frantic to buy their album," Rhythm of Youth" when I heard "I Got The
Message" on the radio and WHAT A GREAT ALBUM! It's one of my top 5
favourite albums of all time. I tend to like their early work more, but
that isn't to say I hate the later stuff. I was SHOCKED when I heard
"Sideways" (my first time was when I saw the video) because Men Without Hats
to me meant electronic music. But the song is good. I've never seen any of
their concerts but thanks to the fan videos, I can say I "did" :) I know
it's a bit late to say this but, "welcome to the list!"

Hello.
My name is Tom Norman. I was born in New Orleans, La. USA.I live in
Columbus, Ohio now. I am 26 years old. I am a contract issue service
technician (WHAT!?), which means that I issue annuity contracts for
Nationwide Insurance.
I began listening to MWH after hearing Pop Goes the World on MTV in '88. I
liked it better than Safety Dance, so I went out and bought the album.
Later I got the used LPs of Rhythm of Youth and Folk III, and wished that
the "other" songs were played on the radio instead of "safety dance". Then
I would have liked the band in the beginning. Don't worry, I like safety
dance now.
I am one of the few listmembers that really digs "The Spell" too. Its
actually one of my favorites. My least favorite album is =
"Sideways"
next....

Hey all.
I guess we're re-intro-ing, so I won't miss this time around.
My name is Nicholas Pinto, and I live in Stratford, CT USA. I first heard
the ROY record when I was about 1, maybe 2. I last heard it when I was 3 and I
heard Safety Dance occasionally until I was about 10. I pulled some of my
parents records out and listened. After that was over I didn't do it again
until I was about 14. I rembered that I liked "Antarctica", so I put it on. In
those 5 years, my musical taste soared ;) and I really liked the entire album.
I'm 17 now and a giant MWH Fan.
My favorite songs (as of right this minute) are the extended version of
Ban The Game from the 1985 concert and the jazz/rock? version of Modern(e)
Dancing from the 1983 concert.

Hello Hatters. Since we all are reintroducing ourselves, I thought I
would join in. My name is Nathan Shireman, and I have been a hats fan
ever since I picked up ROY at a garage sale, when I was in the sixth
grade. Since that time, I thought only two other albums existed, PGTW and
21st Century, but was I ever suprised to hear from a friend a few years
later that there was so much more from IVAN and Co. Well, to say the
least, I've hunted down almost everything I can from MWH, and I love it
all. Even the Spell is a groovie disc!
I am an audiovisual sales director in my regular life, and in my life away
from my life I am a musician, currently working on a techo/industrial
project known as Walling For Dead Folk. I operate out of Columbus, Ohio
and I have a digital home recording studio on the side. Of course, MWH is
always blaring through my living room and studio....

In response to Collin:
I agree that the "I Like" live version from the 1985 Freeways concert is
fantastic, especially with the extended keyboard intro/outro with the
harmony on the repeat. I'd love to hear more versions of "Heaven" also as
Steve mentioned. For a band that used lots of electronics and synth, I
was impressed by how well they performed live. Are there any bootlegs of
concerts for PGtW, 21st C or Sideways?
PS I was just in Toronto last weekend and everyone was sold out of "The
Spell" (good for Ivan, bad for me :) ) Could someone give the 1-800
number for HMV orders again? Thanks!

Subject: (hats) Introduction
Date: 10 Aug 1998 18:32:55 -0700
My name is Bill Black and I first danced to Safety Dance in 1983 in
Provo, UT when I was visiting some friends. I grew up in Los Angeles but did
not think much of that one hit wonder until 1985 when I had a missionary
companion in Brazil who had a copy of ROY and Folk III. I listened a few
times and decided to investigate further when I got home in 1986. Pop Goes
the World came out then which I didn't like initially but naturally, it
became my favorite. I was unimpressed with In the 21st Century but I thought
Sideways was pretty good for a hard rock CD. I haven't listened to the Spell
because I noticed the lyrics contain some profanity, which I don't
voluntarily listen to (I also don't see R-rated movies).
I am currently a 33 year old dentist living in Sacramento with 6 kids. I
was hoping to see MWH in concert this summer but I guess that won't happen
soon. Maybe we should just get a life-size cut-out of Ivan and have a
simulated virtual concert....
My favorite songs by MWH include: O Sole Mio, I Like, Ideas For Walls,
The Real World and Walk on Water. Their worst song is without question: 21st
Century Safety Dance. The things I like best about this list are stickers,
shirt and CD distributors. The Video was also fantastic.
Here's a question to think about....
If MWH produced a CD similar to ROY today, do you think it would be
successful (ie. would it hit the top 40 stations in the U.S., Britain and
Canada) or would it be a flop?
Bill Black

I have not posted a message on the board in quite awhile.
I will be redoing the site somewhat this week as soon as I get the CDs that
Tom Norman already sent in the mail. I know there were a few broken links and
whatnot and I will be fixing everything along with posting some of the new
material that is not on there yet.
I also plan on putting more MWH videos on later after I get all the CDs put up
there in MP3 format.
I was also thinking of making a MWH screen saver. Latley I have been getting
into the screen saver bussiness and have been making some (check out my
web page at www.holdman.com/screensavers - not quite done yet though). I
was thinking of maybe making a MWH screen saver with pictures of the Album
Covers of their records. Anyway let me know what you think. The screen saver
will also allow you to have sound in it (which you can turn on and off). You can
have either MIDI files for WAV files. I can supply the WAV files but I was
wondering if anybody out there has any MIDI files of MWH songs.

i'm a moose, a rare one a that as i live in london and run a digital
recording studio. I mean, how many mooses have you seen doing that
recently? I haven't been involved much with the list over the past few
months as I've been concentrating on my music career - I have a track
being released in the US this month and hopefully signing to a UK based
label in a few days, hot weather permitting. Listen out for Alaska
Highway!
anyways, back to being a trainee pop-star!

I thought the plural of moose was meese . . . ;-)
I'm Laura, Mikey's oft-partner in crime and import/export. I'm a
psychometrician living in North Carolina in the US, and I develop
educational achievement tests for the State.
I am up to <sigh> 6 cats and 3 dogs, but still just one husband.
I have seen Ivan live in 1984 in Florida and then again last summer
in Montreal. Still waiting for another opportunity, but I need a
little more notice than a week! <Hint, hint, Ivan!!!>

Dance first came out. I still have the tape in my car and listen to it
constantly. I'm real glad to have found this site and others with

Subject: (hats) Introduction (another one)
Date: 13 Aug 1998 14:06:03 +0200
Hi hatters!!!
I won't stand back with a re-introduction of myself.
My name is DAVE (no, not really... that's only my nickname since about ten
years. But I LIKE it much more than my real Name which is INGO (I
think so !?).
I live in HAMELN / GERMANY, that's roundabout 50 km (that might be app. 33
miles) away from HANNOVER
(perhaps you know that city). I live here in a 2room flat with my 2 cats, my
computer and my MWH music.
My profession is... I think you call it a postman (the one who brings the
letters and packages).
I'm 25 Years old and became a MWHolic in 1983 when i first heard "Rhythm Of
Youth" from my brothers' (he is 9 years older) turntable. It really knocked
me off my socks.
In 1984 I got "FOE III" and "PGTW" in 1987, which i lost under mysterios
circumstances in 1989.
Now i wanted to buy it again, but it seemed to be impossible to get it once
again in germany. So I gave it up.
And now (please don't laugh) i got it over the internet at a german (!)
cd-store nearly 10 years ago...
And here i found the albums "In The 21st Century", "Sideways", "The
Collection" and "The Very Best OF".
I never knew about their existence. (Try http://www.jpc.de - I think they'll
ship overseas) You won't be floated with MWH information in germany. You
could be glad if they play the Safety Dance - Video on VH1. (once a
year...).
That's the old stuff so far, now the for the new...
I made my PERSONAL BEST OF MWH CD. (Not really, because there was not enough
space on it. Thinking about doing Volume 2 the next days.)
Here's The Track Listing:
1. Walk On
Water
2. In The
Name Of Angels
3. The
Safety Dance
4. Living
In China
5.
Antarctica
6. The
Great Ones Remember
7. Things
In My Life
8. I Like
9. I Got
The Message (12")
10. Folk Of
The 80's
11. I Know
Their Name
12. Where Do
The Boys Go? (12")
13. Editions
Of You
14. In The
21st Century
15. Here Come
The 90's
16. Sideways
That's about 73 minutes.
If anybody is interested, email me at DAVE@betaweb.net
OK, that's all folks.
see ya
best regards...
DAVE
P.S.: Where has all the horny synth gone on the "Sideways" album???

Hello, I recently got introduced to the Men Without Hats by a friend of
mine named Max Jones.........at first Max only had Greatest
Hats......Then we went to various used and new music stores in our home
town, and his collection grew quite quickly. He soon purchased Folk Of
The Eighties Part 3 on cassette.........then he went on to buy Pop Goes
The World and Folk Of The Eighties Part 3 on cassette, but this one had
a different cover. At that same store he found Rhythm Of Youth on vinyl
for $1.99 in a pile of old records.....we went back to my house and
instantly fell in love with the entire album (espescially Things In My
Life)...............a couple days later we went back and he bought ROY
on cassette........
Then we went on the net and found out about The Spell.........Max and I
went downtown and he bought The Spell and Sideways on CD.........then
shortly after he bought Pop Goes The World and Collection on CD as well.
He also sent money to a place over the net and recieved Living In China
12" single.............also he imported The Safety Dance UK Remix single
on CD from HMV.......
Just last week Max invited me to go to Winnipeg Manitoba with him, and
there he found The Safety Dance shaped picture disc vinyl single, the
Bio-Dome soundtrack (which I'm sure you all know what's on it), and Ivan
- The Spell on tape.......
.....so you can see that Max is quite a big fan.......I like all their
songs, but he's a much bigger fan than me, and I thank him for
introducing me to them.........

I might go to Montreal this weekend (Aug 29) and I want to ask all the
Montrealers on this list where me and my friends should go. Which clubs are
good (we're 24 years old)? Which tourist attractions are definitley not to
be missed? Where do all the pretty girls go? ;) Can you suggest any
Italian or hey, since we're in Montreal--Quebecoise cuisine-- restaurants
(cheap if any <grin>)? Suggested hotels? Where in the city should we book
a hotel? We'll be renting a car. I prefer the train but we're renting
anyway. Any chance we can do a MWH tour? ;)
Merci!

Hi everyone!
I got back from a weekned trip to Montreal and I'd liek to post a little
review of the hatless city if I may. If you don't care to read this, hit
"delete" now :)
when compared with Toronto, I was always told Montreal was better and
Toronto was a cold concrete city. I was always a little offended with this
but now that I've been to Montreal---IT'S SO TRUE! Toronto is a nice city
but Montreal is nicer (more trees) and more european. And more festive. Oh
and the girls......;) Anyway, unfortunatley, I wasn't able to meet any list
members nor do a proper MWH tour of Montreal but I did go to see the Olympic
stadium where the "Where Do The Boys Go?" video was filmed. I saw a guy in
a car next to mine on the street who resembled Ivan.
HMV on Rue St. Catherine was a disappointment but that's nothing big anyway
:) Except I was surprised to find a CD by Jeremie Arrobas! For those who
don't know, he used tob e with MWH in the early early early days an dwrote
some of their songs. The CD is called "Le grand manege". When I saw it I
thought "COOL! A little glimpse in the MWH world". I wondered if I should
buy it seeing I have no idea what kind of music it was. On the cd he
waslisted as playing the synthesizer so I assumed it would be techno or
something similar. After hearing the "Rhythm of Youth" demo and the
"Freeways" ep why not? Besides, it costed $7. However, to my dismay, it
wasn't what I expected. A good album but not my taste in music. Not
techno, not electronic, more like the top 40 they play at sports bars (kind
of like country rock with emphasis on rock). If anyone's interested, I can
sell it to them for $10 Cdn (the extra $3 goes to postage). Which is a
bargain these days since the Canadian dollar keeps dropping like a brick.
I totally recommend Montreal for vacation. I'm definitley going back often
and also for the Just For Laughs festival.

Go to www.gemm.com and you'll have your choice of sellers- I got mine
from Canada.
Oh- the German Import of Cold War Night Life has extra tracks- extended
versions of City of Night and Satrudays in Silesia.

Are you talking about Total Rational! here?

I have to also confirm this recommendation, I've been a fan since the
early 80's. Actually saw them in concert this past Friday in Toronto, a
very good show in a very small club. For more info see their website:
www.rationalyouth.com
If anyone has trouble locating any of their CD's I'd be glad to help out
where I can, the CD's are fairly available around here (Ontario,
Canada).
