Subject: (hats) Ivan in Calgary Canada day
Date: 01 Jul 1998 06:56:03 -0600
I just heard an interview Ivan gave to Power 107 in Calgary reguarding his
Canada day show at Olympic plaza. He said he will be playing a mix of old
MWH, material from "The Spell", and material from his new project, which he
has teamed up with Kevin Komoda. Kevin played synth with "Rational Youth"
in the eighties. For the Calgary show it is being called Ivan and the
Ultimate Pop Machine. It should be a great show.

Does anyone know if Ivan will be playing in Toronto this
summer? (And if so, the dates?) My wife is doing a two
month stint up there ... it would be great if I could
time a visit to see an Ivan show.
The Spell seems to be selling pretty well. My wife bought
a copy for me ... and the first two record stores she
tried were sold out ("oh, we had a bunch earlier this
week, but they're gone").
Thanx,

Hi everyone, I went to the show in Calgary and it was great to see
Ivan perform. This was the third time for my self. The first was about '82,
the second about 91 and for the second time in a row he performs without
...synths!! In fact I only recognized Sideways, On Tuesday, Open your eyes (
Ivan only sang the chorus), and of course the last song of the day The
Safety Dance all with guitars. Ivan, and Kevin Komoda played rythm and lead,
He had a female bass player, male drummer. and a female singer that sang the
most of the show. It looked like they were having alot of fun dispite a few
technical problems. This was a free outdoor concert put on by the city, so
the sound was not the best. I took quite a few pictures I hope they turn out.

I'm finally back on this list. I haven't been on since I left school in may.
I have a couple of questions and comments I've kept in store for a while. I
hear the list is slow, so maybe somebody will read these.
1. Whoever did the CD with the bach appella version of Moonbeam did a great
job first of all. I was wondering if he/she could do that song like that, if
he/she could do others. And what is his/her name that did it?
2. Richard Holdman, can you get back to me? You sent me some CD's at
school...but I left before they arrived. I also owe you money for previous
ones.
3. I was in Montreal 2 weeks ago for Canada Day and the jazz festival and I
was wearing a MWH shirt and somebody came up to me and said they knew Jeremy
Arrobas' brother and was good friends with him. He was surprised I knew who
Arrobas was. This may not be weird to people on this list from Canada, but
almost nobody knows MWH in America so it hit me as quite a shock (And i know
that montreal is where the band originates, but still).

There is a movie called "This Boy's Life" and it says that Ivan sings for it.
But it's a movie from 1992. Is there another Ivan that I don't know of?
Also, I remember seeing Men WIthout Hats in a couple of movie soundtracks.
There was some weird cuts on there (it was from PGTW...like O Sole Mio or In
the Name of Angels)
I know of Biodome but there was some older movies that had them on it.
Anybody know?
Oh, and I got the Terre des Hommes CD from Mitsou....and it is, surprisingly,
very good!!! I admit i bought it b/c Ivan sings background on some tracks, but
the rest of the cd is very good as well. Is it true that Mitsou is the Madonna
of Canada only more slutty (sorry for lack of a better word).

i was told that "Treblinka" was the name of a concentration camp run by
someone known as ivan the terrible or something of those sorts.
so i imagine the song is about male trying desperately to be kind in his
romantic relations with women. trying to learn from past mistakes, but
continuing to fall down......

Hi Hatters!
Glad to see the list coming back to life . . .
The discussion about Johnny is interesting. You know how first
names are different in different languages? Like Peter is Pedro in
Spanish, Pierre in French, etc? Anyway, IVAN is one of the
transliterations of the name JOHN (along with Jan, Ian, Sean, Jean,
Juan, and Ion to name a few).
Maybe there is some self-identification?

The song "Pop Goes The World" is on the soundtrack of a movie which came out

The movie was supposed to have been a real turkey. Personally, I have never

And of course, we all know of the "Safety Dance"/"Biodome" disaster.

I must respectfully disagree. Every time I hear this section (which is my
favorite part, it always makes me grin.. it feels just like Ivan to pull
something like this in the middle of an otherwise serious song) I just
hear:
only in america
lonely in america
h-only in america
j-only in america
america
I think it is just general silliness, one of the things I really like
about MwoH. It seems to me most people stay away from silliness
altogether, but MwoH is always a little bit 'playful', I think.
I can just imagine the simple thinking that went into it "only.. ok,
lonely rhymes... what else rhymes?" and then just going and picking a
couple random consonants. I'm sure we've all gone through the alphabet
trying on different letters at the beginning of a word to see what other
words rhyme with it. I think "honly.. jonly.." are just part of an
experiment like this.. especially because h and j are consecutive
consonants when going through the alphabet.
...just another opinion.

Well, when she was trying to get into the English Canandian scene, Madonna
was at the height of her shocking controversial ways ("Justify My Love").
From what I remember, the only similarites between her and Madonna is the
blonde hair. To me, Mitsou is a big wannabe. For "Terre des hommes" it
seems she finally decided to be herself. She stopped dying her hair blonde
and looked much better as a brunette. After her first single, she went back
to blonde and did a video topless. It's somewhat tasteful, not dirty like
Madonna yet the video has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song. I
think she used different attitudes towards nudity in English and Frnech
Cananda as her justification to the video.
Now, after reading this, you may think I am not a fan, but I am. Well, I
only like her first two albums and I love the latter one. It's too bad she
puts on the persona of a wannabe. Someone on this list said Mitsou is to
music like Pamela Anderson is to acting. I think Mitsou owns a chain of
pizzarias called Pizzadelic.
So, I am not sure but I think Mitsou is no longer as popular as she was
before so I doubt she is to Cananda like Madonna is to the US.
Which brings a question to mind. All I know about quebecoise music is
Mitsou. Um...a guy with a really big afro called Charlebois (ok ok, that
was in the 70s) and the default, Celine Dion. Can some of the Quebecois
mailing list members suggest any Quebecois pop singers? NOT R&B or Hip Hop.
I like dancey stuff and techno :) Hence, Men Without Hats :D Whatever
happened to James Bande? I liked his song "J'en ai un pneu".

Well, it is a demo :) Not a completed song (as far as we know). For
example, Abba would sing silly lyrics just to try out the song. Maybe Ivan
is doing the same thing.

Somewhat on topic.....Mitsou's "duets" with Ivan are released on a few
albums. "Terre des hommes" and "Heading West". "Heading West" is the
American release of "Terre Des Hommes". At the same time, a remix album by
the same name was released only in Canada. Today I found a different
version of the remix album. It has a red cover but the same songs (maybe one
extra remix, I don't know). It was only $13 too. I might buy it some day :)

It was fairly decent. The angel was the Emanuelle Beardt who later played
in Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise. The movie's opening song is also
by MWH: "Intro" minus the "Can you hear me?" and running footsteps at the
end.

As we recently discussed, the name "Treblinka" refers to a WWII death camp.
One interesting bit of history that I don't recall anyone mentioning is that
the Treblinka death camp was destroyed after about a year and a half when the
captives rose up and rebelled against the Germans using weapons they had
smuggled from the camp's armory.
I wonder if Ivan had any of that in mind when he was working on the song?

In Walk on Water, is MWH singing about themselves. At the end, where Ivan
sings, "We never walked on water," he's talking about the group, right?
And if so, what is the hundred and two songs they did...or was that just for
the rhyme?
Why is this list so slow? Doesn't anybody have any questions or like to hear
other people's insight on certain songs? Come on guys. I know most of you
don't have the best personalities...but at least they're personalities.

Well, it *is* summer... When everyone gets back to school in a month or so,
things should pick up.
In the meantime, I've been enjoying my CDs (thanks again, Richard!). And
the live version of Pop Goes the World from last year's concert is *verry*
interesting. I kinda like it...
So when do tickets go on sale for this new concert? ;-)

I'm not too much in a mood for talking but I have to answer.
Me and Vince Sylvaggio put a lot of our energy to get this show working.
We wanted to see MWH, not Ivan alone. We gave our request to Ivan. It seems
that Ivan was not really interested to do a family reunion.
I asked the people here "Are you interested to come to Montreal to Ivan as a
solo artist" Majority of the people told me NO.
Thank you for readind

Ok...
The Men Without Hats Reunion concert was so...bizarre. I mean, the
neon-green Bonhomme playing the harp? What was that all about? the songs
were great. Especially the "You Are My Sunshine" cover they played during
the encore. I never knew Ivan was able to play two harmaonicas at once!
The concert hall was jam packed but I had front row seats centre. Which, by
the third song wasn't a great idea because Ivan's brother, Stefan, brought
out a huge water gun and blasted everyone in the first row. I'm sure glad
it ended up being disappearing ink! You should have seen the look on the
police officer's face when it suddenly disappeared!
It was a great three-hour-and-45-minute concert with Mitsou opening up by
singing three songs (french versions of Ivan's solo stuff in a
jazz/hillbilly style). I'm glad I was able to get it all on DAT tapes along
with part of the sound check where Ivan recites Shakespeare and sings an
Arabic-style version of "The Rhytm Of Youth". However, I wasn't able to
spot any list members at the outdoor concert. Has anyonhere gone? I was
the one with the really big chicken suit carrying the sign saying "I am the
egg man". The band autographied it later.

Subject: (hats) T-shirts
Date: 27 Jul 1998 12:48:16 +0000
Hi Hatters!
For those new to the list, I am Laura the T-shirt Goddess. In the
past year and a half, I have developed the following modus operandi.
I collect orders for Ts for 6 months to a year, then when I have a
big enough order, I have *just that many* T's made up. This is
because this represents a substantial financial outlay. I then let
people know their Ts are ready, how much their total with postage etc
is, and where to send the $$. After the order is placed, I then
start a waiting list, which is the foundation new list for the next
order. If someone changes their mind about their order, or does not
send in their $$, I will offer their Ts to the next person on the
waiting list.
I just finished an order in May, I think it was, and I am still
waiting to receive $$ from quite a few people. I will wait until
school starts back up again before I begin cancelling their orders
and offering their T's to the waiting list. Those of you who have
contacted me privately to let me know that your $$ will be a little
late or on the way, don't worry - I will hold your T's. Those of you
who I have not heard from since April or May - better get cracking!
Anyway, as there have been several questions about Ts posed to the
list or to me privately, I will again summarize the Ts available, and
then people can write to me privately to get on the waiting/new order
list. The Ts are 100% cotton, available in ROY Gold or F80s3 White;
sizes XL or XXL (they shrink to be *just right*); short sleeve, no
pocket. On the front is the MWH logo in black and red, very large!!;
and on the back is the email list address and the quote "The Great
Ones Remember." Colin and Ivan have these Ts, and Colin said that
the quote is perfect. Prices are between $13 and $15 depending on
size and color you want, and includes postage to the US or Canada.
If you live in Timbuktoo, obviously postage will be more. ;-) I
just want to add that the prices for the Ts represent my actual cost
to get them made and mailed - I make *NO* profit off of these!
To get on the waiting/new order list . . .
1. Be prepared to wait perhaps until next spring for a shirt.
2. Send me your (real) name and snail mail address.
3. Tell me what quantity of each size and color you want. There are
discounts on multiple shirts, since I include postage in the price
and I can get two or three shirts in one package.
CUL8R!
;-) Laura

Today I was listening to the RoY demos and wondered which other songs Jeremy
Arrobas wrote. I know he wrote "Rhythm of Youth", and "Treblinka", but I
wonder which others did he write and co-write (I guess Claude knows! :)). I
know he was also involved in the Freeways songs.
Also, does he have Internet access? I think it would be great to be able to
chat with him since he's the other former member who wrote the lyrics (to
their early stuff).

Hey
Mr. Arrobas left MWH before the summer tour of 1981. He was replace by Jean-
Marc Pisapia, lead singer of The Box. But, as you know the "Nice" character
of Mr. Ivan Doruchuck, Jean-Marc left MWH during fall 1981, after the summer
tour. They were a caracter incompatibility (according to Jean-Marc). "Ivan
is someone very tough to work with" said Jean-Marc. Then he found The Box in
1982.
Did you know that the production company in Quebec who has to booked Ivan
didn't get 1 single show???? People in Quebec want to see MWH, not Ivan.
Ciao
Francis

In this e-mail, I look at Ivan declining the show from an objective view.
>tour. They were a caracter incompatibility (according to Jean-Marc). "Ivan

>1982.
Well, my impression of him is he's a serious artist so I can see how he can
be hard to work with. I'm kind of like that too (but I'm open to
compromise), my art--whatever type it may be--is a direct reflection of
myself. Maybe Ivan feels the same way-- I guess he doesn't compromise his art.
>Did you know that the production company in Quebec who has to booked Ivan
>didn't get 1 single show???? People in Quebec want to see MWH, not Ivan.
I see you are bitter with Ivan. I don't blame you. You worked so hard to
put the show together and regularly reporting back to us on the updates then
Ivan says, "Nah". It may not make things better, but I hope you understand
the rest of the list thanks you and fully appreciates for the work you put
in (wow, all that work while your youngest daughter was sick. How is she
doing?). It was going to go on and be a success--I know--but in the end,
the singer didn't want to do it. Do you know why? From what I remember, we
really didn't get a straight answer. All we got was Ivan prefers to be as
Ivan not MWH. All we were able to do was come up with some theories (the
one about the band practice seemed to be the most accurate*). In my
opinion, he owes us an explanation, we are his fans and we were ready to
give him a concert whether it was private or not isn't an issue. But still,
he came on the chat (but was laconic like anything).
I don't mean to sound rude to Ivan, but he writes all those songs about
"I've got a woman inside" and the environnent, and he shows his true
feelings mean, but he doesn't tell us why he didn't want to do the show.
I'm surprised at how QUIET and I mean Q-U-I-E-T the list suddenly became
when Ivan declined the offer. And it still is. My opinion is we're somehow
still hurt by the unanswered questions and we seemed to be hit with a little
reality we don't want to admit to Ivan so frankly (I hate to write this): we
prefer MWH not his solo work. And we prefer his early days anyway. But
this is a sign. Ivan says "I want to be Ivan" but there isn't a demand for
it. I think he'll be more successful when the new MWH album comes out (as
he said).
So, a question, have we stopped listening to our CDs? Are they listened to
in a darker light?
*Someone mentioned Ivan probably preferred to do Ivan songs rather than MWH
because then they'd have to rehearse for the MWH songs after not playing
them for a decade. Let's face it, we preferred he sang all the early stuff.
all that rehearsal would take a lot of time.

I still love my MWH CD's. I still listen for enjoyment and I feel no less now
since there isn't a concert.
I'm disappointed that there isn't a concert (who isn't?) but we are a MWH fan
list. Ivan probably has a solo fan list and they should have an Ivan concert.
It's not our fault we don't want to see Ivan solo (I speak for myself and
others who were less than interested in going up to see him). I might have
enjoyed it just as much, but it's just not what I was looking forward to.
I hope this makes some sense.

There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding the above statement. I
did not make it. My post (which has been excised from the above quoted
reply) was "Ouch," meaning that I was surprised to see what appeared to
be a blatant insult at the end of an otherwise intelligent query.
I should note, however, that upon further consideration, I believe
Divisio had tongue firmly planted in cheek when making the statement.
And I'm glad Divisio's query spawned such an interesting response by The
Elendilrandiri about the meanings behind Walk on Water. Umberto Eco
would be proud.
Best wishes to the group,
J. Abbas

While I was at work today doing my mindless lemming-work, I kept thinkning
about Ivan and MWH. The only diffrence is Collin and Steffan aren't around
anymore. From what I've heard, Ivan wrote most of the music and they told him
what "was MWH" and what "wasn't".
Now had we gone to see Ivan, I feel it would to see how the Hatless are
currently doing, only without the influence of the other brothers.
Personally, I'd still rather see all three of them, but Ivan's still Ivan,
with or without a Hat.
