Subject: (hats) Old News (FoEIII)
Date: 01 May 1998 08:08:40 -0700 (PDT)
Howdy folks:
I was a subscriber to this list a
year or two ago. I was able to
follow the progress of Mr.
__oglio's fine Collection album
as it made its way from Carl's
mind through the lawyers into the
local record store.
When I left the list (my univ.
finally realized I had graduated
and so they yanked away my acct.) I think the European FoE/RoY CD
had just been released.
I'm wondering if the list has
found a nice, reliable source to
provide this CD for us North
Americans. I'd appreciate any
info.
Please respond directly if you
would like to help.
Thank you
--Ethan

Date: 01 May 1998 13:34:56 -0400
Hello
I'm looking for help from anyone who is familiar with a group called Zu
Zu Sharks and who lives in Spain. They had a number one hit in Spain in
the early 1980s called "Love Tumbles Down".
Apparently they released three singles in Spain on vinyl for EMI.
If anyone who lives in Spain is out there and wouldn't mind throwing
some help my way please drop me a note.
Thank you
Gordon Roberts
PS I'll pay you properly for any help getting these vinyl items.

Everyone,
Well, It looks like the "1972" video is not going to happen.
And We all have plenty of Ivan appearences.
Why don't you send all of your videotapes to Myke Carter.
I don't think that I will have any time to do this project.
Is this ok with you Myke?
Just reserve a tape for me to buy ok?

I don't know why the list has slowed down so much but as for me, ever since
the concert fell through I have not had much reason to write.
I am kind of disappointed with Ivan's decision not to do the show. I
understand the reasons why he may not have been interested, but I think his
and his management's handling of the situation could have been more direct
and personal
to the fans, written in a list posting or something. It was, however, a
tactful let-down: their telling us that he would do the show if he could do it
as a solo artist with solo material. But he and his management knew
full well that we wanted to see a Men Without Hats show.
I have not heard anything from Francis so I will assume the entire plan has
been scrapped.
Maybe some other year, when Ivan realizes the true worth of his life-long
fans.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA
To add my 2 cents, I don' feel like we were mistreated in any way. In my
opinion, Ivan's management did not email the list because Francis was our
spokesperson. He went to the management representing us and then he'd tell
us what management said. Also, I agree with Claude when he says he doesn't
see anything wrong with Ivan moving forward. In the beginning we decided
that if Ivan wants to do the show it would be cool. So he didn't. A while
back, Tom said perhaps it is because of the time to get the band together
and rehearse.
Maybe when Men Without Hats records their new album, this idea might happen.
But I wouldn't expect a totally private show.
I'm very curious to know what is Francis' idea! :)
By the way, I'm not sure if I already said this, I was making a tape for the
car one day and was going through my CDs choosing which to record. I came
across the "Freeways" boot and thought aboutt he discussion about listening
to "Freeways" in the car while driving on...well, a freeway. IT'S TRUE!!!!!
It wasn't a night, but on the highway the song is perfect! Then I happened
to be listening to it on the road (not the highway) and it wasn't the same.
It's perfect for the highway. It's the words and the music.
Also, I was on my way to an interview and popped in my PGTW tape (I have the
feeling I mentioend this already). WHAT A REFRESHING ALBUM!!!!! I don't
know why, but it was so rejuvenating. I guess I was depressed for a while
about job search (still looking!) and the music was upbeat. Or perhaps you
listen to the lyrics about the environment and put things in perspective.

Subject: (hats) Ivan on MusiquePlus
Date: 16 May 1998 17:35:58 -0500
Hello friends!
I was sure somebody would beat me to it (I taped it and watched it 2 hours
later). So a few words about Ivan's appearance on MusiquePlus. First, the
expected 1 hour interview turned out to be a very short half hour deal :-(
Since MusiquePlus are doing an 80's weekend, Ivan was invited as a member of
MWH, not as a solo act (he didn't say a word about The Spell). Highlights of
the show include THE explication of Safety Dance (more on that later) and a
performance of Safety Dance (this is not a typo). He was singing over a tape
(the same one used during the Spell "tour" if my memory is correct). He was
accompanied by one dancer (Sahara, Laura is happy ;o). Ivan's singing was VERY
GOOD. Nothing like what he did on the Erica Hem's show. The mixing was average
(the music in the background), but Ivan was so good that I didn't mind.
When asked if MWH was dead, Ivan's answer was: "I wouldn't say that". He then
talked about future projects. Stephan, who owns a recording studio north of
Quebec, is working on a country project with singer-songwriter Mack MacKenzie
(of Three O'Clock Train fame, another Montreal 80's band).
Colin will release "Centrifugal Force" this summer on Uforia. I don't know if
this will be a reedition of "Excerpts From Matter (VOL III)" (anybody knows
something about volume I and II?) or something new. In either cases I would
strongly recommend it. Centrifugal Force is the definite proof that talent
runs in the Doroschuk family.
Ivan then mentioned 3 other projects for Uforia: a thing called Naked Yoga
(trance-techno), another rock-techno project (no name) and a new band Ivan is
putting toghether (of the bass/drum/guitar varieties, Sideways take 2?)
They also talked about the fact that MWH always came up with something new,
different from their previous work. Ivan confirmed that he was interested in
exploring the new possibilities of music. When asked for his sources of
inspiration he mentioned Supertramp, Genesis, then Roxy Music... progressive
rock. He also said that in their very first incarnation (the pre-Arrobas era)
their main influences were the Beatles and the Sex Pistol.
They also played the Pop Goes The World clip. There you have it. I have taped
the show and will send it to Tom (Tom where are you?).
Take care all
Claude

Thank you for giving us the details on this!
By the way, what is "Exceprts From Matter"? I think this was mentioned before.

Everyone,
We were very lucky to have Oglio put out the Men Without Hats collection
and 2-fer. But now I'm hoping that they'll put out more '80s music. I've
been after them for over a year to put out Ebn-Ozn's "Feeling Cavalier" on CD.
They wrote me back yesterday to say that they couldn't do it unless they
could guarantee that 25000 copies would be sold.
So I was wondering: how would I go about conducting a survey or petition
or signature list over the Net for '80s music lovers? I don't want to
resort to spam or anything like that, but I'd like to find the 25000
fans I know must be out there and communicate this to Oglio.
Any help that anyone can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I just spoke to Carl at Oglio a few days ago. He contacted the Sparks
mailing list with an oh so subtle self promotion. I told him that I was
a bit disappointed that he hasn't been doing much 80' re-issueing
lately. He admits that it has been awhile but guarentees some cool
releases this year. He gave no indication what they may be. I've been at
him to re-issue Haysi Fantayzee and Classix Nouveaux since 92 but
nothing so don't hold your breath. I can't support you for the Ebn Ozn
re-issue as I can't stand them. Sorry.

Don't assume that you are a pretty small market share. If people would
speak up about what albums they would like to see re-issued maybe we
would get more. I've been sending letters out for years. Though most of
what I've wanted has yet to be re-issued I may have made a difference
here or there. The only suggestion of mine that appeared on Oglio was
the 2 on 1. I doubt that I had anything to do with it actually being
re-issued but who knows. It's always a good idea to have 2 or more
copies of a favorite LP that doesn't exist on CD. I have 2 copies of the
Haysi Fantayzee LP. It offers a little security. Until everything is
avalable I'll continue paying outragous prices for second hand vinyl or
long out of print CD's. Gee wilikers, I just had to pay $55 for a long
deleted Toyah CD!!

I've been suggesting Feeling Cavalier to Carl for years now, but to be honest
I doubt there are 25,000 people out there who even *remember* Ebn-Ozn, let
alone would be willing to pop for a CD reissue of that album.

Not to slam Carl, 'cause he's the MWH Man, but were there really 25,000 people
lined up to buy Freur or Wire Train?... Maybe I was living under a rock,
but I'd never heard of either of those bands until 1996...

hi,
This may not be the best time for me to weigh in on lists and such
seeing I have stepped on peoples toes as of late, but here goes-
When Oglio says they need to sell 25K copies, don't get too steamed up
at Oglio. They only licensee the stuff from the major labels. The
majors, in an act of cutting off their nose to spite their face, demand
that these bands like Ebn-Ozn or Classic Nevoux- who didn't even sell
25K copies when they CAME OUT- sell 20K or 30K upon re-issue, They
demand from labels like Oglio a guarantee that they will sell 20 or 30K,
meaning that if Oglio doesn't, they loose money. A company like Oglio
can make money off of a lot fewer sales, but the people who hold the
rights to the music don't want to hear about it.
I know of a story at ANOTHER label that got the rights to a solo album
from the '80s to a well known '60s and '70s member of a huge band. They
got the rights with a guarantee they would sell 20K copies for RCA, but
when RCA realized how quickly the little label said yes, they upped it
ot 30K and the little label backed out because they knew they couldn't
sell that many. TO this day those solo albums are not on CD!
So give Carl a break and start yelling at A&M about Ebn Ozn (or is it
Epic?)

Hello.
I thought I should reply to this directly but decided there might be some
others on this list also interested in Classix Nouveau.
I had been a fan when they were together and had also been pestering record
companies to release something by them.
EMI Gold (UK) recently (1997) came out with The Very Best of Classix
Nouveau, and here's the catalog number in case you need to order it: CD
GOLD 1104 (7-24385-99782-2). 16 tracks including new (?!) versions of
the Robots Dance and Guilty.
Haysi Fantayzee has one track on the cd 'Pop and Wave - the Never Ending
80's Vol 5', a two cd compilation from Germany (I got my copy at Virgin).
It is the only thing I have ever seen on cd by them; "John Wayne os Big
Leggy" which I suppose (other than Shiny Shiny) that's the best we can
expect. the label is Sony and the # is 478012-2
Bye for now.

If any of you are interested in the Best Of Classix CD I will warn you
that it will be difficult to locate. I had to order both of my copies
from places in the UK as no one in the US seemed to stock it. For the
record the new verion of the Robot's dance is the re-recorded version
that appeared as the B-side of the Guilty UK 12". Also the CD lists that
Guilty is the new version when it is actually the short version slowed
down a bit. It's a decent collection that does have some of their best
stuff but is nowhere near sufficient for us long term fans. Anybody have
video material on them? I had an ad in Goldmine looking for some but got
no responses. Very sad.

Dear 80's folks,
I'd like to join the discussion about the availability of 80's goodies
because it's one of my favourite topics (although sometimes a very sad
story).
Rod stated that Haysi Fantayzee was only available on one particular
German sampler. I have some additional information:
"John Wayne Is..." is also featured on another German compilation CD
called "Audio 80's" (BMG records 261 299) together with some nice stuff
by Haircut 100 and an early version of Huang Chung's (!) "Dance Hall
Days".
But there are other Various Artists-CDs that feature Haysi Fantayzee's
"Shiny Shiny".
These are:
a) Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80's Volume 11
(1995 US; Rhino Records R2 71974)
b) Living in Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits Volume 1
(1993 US; EMI E2 81417)
For those of you who are searching for 12" versions of old goodies
there is a number of (sometimes hard-to-find) CDs of interest like
the French "Culture Dance" series on Versailles Records (Sony) or
the Canadian "Hardest Hits" and "Classic Alternatives" series on SPG
(which has gone bankrupt, unfortunately, but I guess, most of the
titles might still be found).
There is a fantastic resource for 80's sampler contributions. You can
search for titles and artists. The page is maintained by a Swedish guy
and even has running times for most of the songs.
Here is the URL:
http://www.thegrid.net/mpaulsen/newwave.html
If I can be of help for someone who is searching for something in
particular (especially German CDs), don't hesitate to send me a mail.
I'm also looking for some Various Artists CDs:
a) "Steve Masters Presents: A Trip Back to the 80's"
(199? US; UBL Recordings A-26491)
b) "Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Dance Hits of the 80's"
(1997 US; Rhino Records R2 72586)
c) "80's Dance Party Volume 2"
(1994 CA; SPG Music SPG 1982)
I'm looking for these CDs because they feature a song called "the
Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" by Dominatrix.
Any ideas, anyone?
Cheers,
Frank M. Spinath

Hi all!
I just got my 56k modem to work and I installed a big fat harddrive (but I'm
still using my 486 chip) so now I actually have space to download some mp3s
:) My first choice? What else? The Winnebago song. Totally
unexpected...it's 19 minutes long!!!! I had the impression it was a short
little demo recorded inside a winnebago. Maybe 2 minutes at the most. But
19?! :) I'm in heaven. No pun intended. Unfortunately, my 486 cannot
play it back in stereo so I'll have to do with mono. But I will buy the CD
boot though :) I just though I'd mention this. Peopel have been talking
about other groups lately ;)

To answer a couple things from your message, the Jubilee soundtrack is
now available on import, Sparks CD Angst in my pants, containing Mickey
mouse and I predict, is also available on import. In fact all, but one,
of their albums are available on import CD. The group that did She Went
Pop was called Iam Siam. I had the LP, I didn't like it. The group that
did We are what we are is called The Other Ones as opposed to The Young
Ones. Freur and Wire Train CD's are available from good old Oglio. I saw
Lene Lovich live in 90. It is still the best concert that I have ever
been to. You mention that you have video on some early 80's artists. I
am always looking for early 80's videos for my collection. While I have
plenty there are still some gaps in my video collection that I would
love to fill. Anyone out there sweet enough to share or sell??? Would
love to locate MTV from 81-84 copied straight through. VJ's,
commercials, everything.

I always find it odd that people on these lists get so mad when the
topic of conversation strays on occasion. Talking about MWH can't help
but slip into 80's related topics now and then. There's only so much
that can be said about MWH and I'm sure when someone has something to
say about them it will be said as opposed to sticking to a non related
subject. The list has gone quiet lately so list members are revealing
little details about what other things they like, getting to know a
little more about each other. There's nothing wrong with that, is there?

As list admin I don't mind a little subject drift from time to time but I also
don't think it's unreasonable for people to expect that when they join a list
with a specific topic the majority of the mail they get will be directly
related to that topic.
Fortunately there's a very nice list out there called perfect-beat that's
designed especially for general '80s music discussion. If you'd like to join
the list, email perfect-beat-subscribe@tiffany.indyramp.com or
perfect-beat-digest-subscribe@tiffany.indyramp.com (as appropriate) to get

Subject: (hats) My URL has changed...
Date: 22 May 1998 19:45:29 -0400 (EDT)
Those of you who have links to my MWH site may want to take note of
the fact that I've been completely redesigning the file/directory
structure of my entire site lately and the path to my MWH page is not
what it used to be.
The URL to my front page <http://people.delphi.com/mykec/index.htm">
has not changed, however.
From memory (Lord help me), the full URL to my hats page is:
http://people.delphi.com/mykec/main/artists/mwh.htm
The URLs to my mwh1.gif and mwh2.gif "wallpaper" files are:
http://people.delphi.com/mykec/main/artists/zimages/mwh/mwh1.gif
http://people.delphi.com/mykec/main/artists/zimages/mwh/mwh2.gif
I do hope I got those correct! If I didn't, let me know.
Sorry, Eric, the mwh.zip file I used to keep online seems to have
been accidentally deleted during my site's renovation. You'll
have to use the two above URLs until I can get a new one created.
In addition to these changes, you might also wanna check out the
new look to my MWH pages. For those of you who didn't like having
to wait for all the piccies to load before, I have implemented a
new strategy to hopefully help you out.
Angie Tooley, you're pics are also finally prepared the way I always
wanted to prepare them online. Not only that, if you click on the
big pics on the left (as opposed to the thumbnails on the right)
you will be advanced to the next pic in the series just as before,
however, when you get to the last pic, it links to my own personal
set of MWH concert pix. You can then cycle through my 16 pics - the
last of which then cycles back to yours! It's a continuous loop.
You can, of course, exit back to my main mwh.htm page by clicking
any of the available green "back-arrow" gifs there. Hope you like it!

Hey Hatters-
I just received my Hats Digest (it figures as soon as I switch to the
digest the subject of Oglio comes up). Thanks for the kind words about
Oglio. :-)
Oglio started in 1992 with a single mission to reissue the hard to find 80s
music I enjoyed hearing on KROQ here in Los Angeles. We started with
compilations and, as the compilation market exploded in 1994, we later
added single artist reissue collections. We now release comedy, novelty and
new music as well.
I would personally love to release Ebn-Ozn, Haysi Fantayzee, Classix
Nouveaux and a long list of others but unfortunately economics prevents me
from doing that. I learned valuable lessons with releases like Red Rockers
and Wire Train.
The major labels are big machines and it takes alot of money to get them to
even generate the paperwork for a license. The labels generally ask for
25,000 unit guarantees that mean a small label risks $100,000 - $125,000 to
put a record out. I risked that to put out the Men Without Hats Collection
and most of the other Oglio licensed records. Oglio and the label (MCA)
were not able to come to terms for a MWH 2 for 1 in the USA.
Sorry to Michelle and the other list members that don't care about non-Hats
stuff. I thought most of you would enjoy my answer.

Tom,
I am more than happy to be considered for this project and am even
willing to do it, but not right now. I have a major taping project
for Carl that I've volunteered to do during the next three weeks
(I have nearly 24 hours of KROQ recorded in the 80s which i need
to compile to three 8-hour VHS HiFi videocassettes for him and I to
enjoy. I have a tape to make for Russ because we do some trades on
occasion. And I really need to get started on my version of
"Life After Diamond Head" which I've volunteered to make for the
MWH tribute CD which, last I heard, is to be released next month.
Too much to do!

Well, I've finally begun to create my own version of "Life After
Diamond Head" for the forthcoming MWH tribute CD. It's still in its
infancy at this point and currently clocks in at only one-and-one-half
minutes - one full minute shorter than the finished original.
It's a lot of work building a song the way I do, but I can already
tell the results will be well worth the effort when it's complete.
What exactly is the deadline for submissions on this CD adventure?
Who else is making / recording something for it?
What songs will be on it besides mine?

just a thought
