inquiring about how to obtain the 2fer cd. Could someone please fill us
in on how or where we can get this wonderful collection? I'm sure that
all the new members (including myself) would be eternally grateful.

Hi Deric: it seems Dr Laura Kramer is the official distributor for that
CD. Her e-mail is easy to find in the who's who section of the Men
Without Hats FAQ site (
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/3136/home_mwh.html )

You'll find that and much more in the history section of the Men Without
Hats FAQ site (
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/3136/home_mwh.html )

Thanks to David, Tom and Dale for clearing up the FOTE numbers for me!
I still am looking for a source for the 2fer if anyone knows of one.
I knew FOTE was scarce but I wasn't sure how scarce. I found a copy
about a month ago at a pawn shop here in Naples FL for $6, what a find!
I was hoping the same person might have sold them ROY also but after
about an hour of looking through used cds I came up empty handed. Oh
well, I guess I can't complain.
Thanks again.

Subject: (hats) updates . . .
Date: 02 Feb 1998 08:43:55 +0000
Hi Hatters!
Wow! I love seeing all these new folks on the list! If Claude
hasn't already hit you up for this, send him some biographical info
and maybe a picture of yourself for inclusion on the fabulous website
that Claude maintains for us. (And yes, Claude, I know I haven't
sent in a picture yet - still gotta find one of me without the dog.)
2-Fer update: All the ones that I arranged to get from Thomas are
"claimed." I have started a waiting list in case someone changes
their mind, or if I can get some more at a later date. I will have
to see what I can arrange with Carl and a European lister (hint,
hint! taking volunteers . . .). I also have not yet received the
next 5 from Thomas's mom yet. Recall that they are coming via
surface mail, so may take a long time. I will keep all orderers
updated whenever there is a new shipment, so we can kind of get an
idea of how long its taking.
T-shirt update: I have had a *very* *AWFUL* new year so far, and
have not yet placed the T-shirt order. Hopefully, I can pull the
requests from my two addresses together tonight and post an updated
order list tonight or tomorrow so people can check for errors.
Anyway, on the plus side, all you new folks can still order a
T-shirt. Your choices are XL and XXL (they shrink), and White or
ROY-Gold (matched to my 2-fer CD cover). The front has the MWH logo
in black and red (very large), and on the back it has "The Great Ones
Remember" and the list address. No limit on how many T's you can
order - one to save for posterity and one to wear all the time, one
for each day of the week, whatever. The more we order, the cheaper
they are! I hope to have these for under $15 apiece, including
mailing in the US (more to mail outside of the US, of course).
Well, that's all for now, I guess! Again, welcome to the new folks!!
:-) Laura in NC

Subject: (hats) 2-fers list
Date: 02 Feb 1998 17:21:41 +0000
Hi Hatters!
Sorry for the list clutter - I'll be doing this again tomorrow with
the T's probably, so bear with me. ;-)
Before Xmas, I had in my hot little paws 10 of the 2-fers obtained by
Thomas, with 20 more in Germany with Thomas's mom. After receiving
your replies from my offer the week before Xmas, the 10 disks went to
the first 10 people who wrote after the time and date I specified.
After that, as the requests came in, I put people on the list to
claim the other 20 that are still in Germany. After those 20 were
claimed, further requests were put on a waiting list pending another
deal through a European supplier (still hoping for a volunteer!).
So, #s 11 through 30 are just waiting on the mail from Germany. In
case you've forgotten who you are (I know it's been a while, but
that's surface mail for you!)
11-15: Jon Stanley, Brad Day, Tyge Spane, Steve Reid, Charlotte Stout
I expect your CDs to arrive any day now.
16-20: John Stallings, Adam Weitzman, PD Kolb, Mark Frey, Richard
Holdeman
21-25: Alex Billings, Bob Webb, Keith Walker, Chris Larrow, Dale
Plantz
26-30: Nicholas Pinto, David Burdick, George Polly, Dave Krupla, Dave
Brady.
The CDs are being sent in sets of 5, approximately 2 weeks apart.
Thomas thought that this way Customs on both sides of the Atlantic
wouldn't get their panties in a wad.
Anyway, that's the way the CD distribution is shaping up. Hope this
alleviates some of the confusion.
CUL8R!!

Date: 02 Feb 1998 14:33:39 -0800
Hey all. My first question has to do with Antarctica. Is there any
theme or moral to this song, or is it just a bunch of words strung together?
It is a great song, but I was listening to the lyrics very carefully today
and really tried to comprehend them. I know, I am putting way to much
effort into a song, but it was interesting.
Another question to Laura...
I had put an order in for a T a while back, do you still have a list of
people who asked for one a few months ago?

Hi Charles, Hi Hatters!
Best: Safety Dance
2nd Best: Where Do The Boys Go
3rd: I Got The Message (sorry, Tom, but I like it, though it's not so
very creative. It was the 2nd Single after SAFETY DANCE in Germany and
'we love it')
If you want to answer, do it quickly: I'll e-mail again at the end of
this week or on Monday and then again not before the beginning of March!

Subject: (hats) You Got The Message
Date: 04 Feb 1998 11:40:00 -0500
Hi all:
It's been quite a while! I had to drop off the list for awhile due to
the fact that a Canadian friend of mine used my email address to enter a
US-only contest and soon after I got spammed to death and had to close
my email account because it couldn't handle the traffic. Well I should
have a new email address within the next couple of weeks that can handle
it so...as Arnold says...I'll be back.
In the meantime...a bit about myself for all of the new folks:
I was born in California and raised in Northern Ontario, Canada...the
Great White North...home of the McKenzie brothers (Take off eh you
hoseheads) and one of my alltime favorite bands - Men Without Hats -
which I got into in the early 80's. I moved down to Michigan in 1985 to
go to University...ended up getting married in 1990 and now have two
children (I'll be 32 in 13 days - no over-the-hill jokes). I just
commented to my wife the other day that it's hard to believe we're at
the end of the 90's when I'm still stuck in 1984. I feel like I'm still
in my early 20's. Anyway...I just got a job as a Project Manager for a
website development company here in Kalamazoo, Michigan which I will
begin in two weeks.
My biggest hobby is music - specifically - synthpop. Most of my CD's
(1000+) and vinyl records (???) are from the 80's - and I will be the
first to admit that I'm sort of stuck in that era. I have my own music
studio in my basement with a few Rickenbacker guitars and over 20 analog
synths and drum machines from the 70's and 80's - some of which are
identical to the one's used on the early MWH albums (i.e. Prophet-5 rev.
2, LinnDrum, Emulator II, etc.) - all controlled via a 200 MHz MacIntosh
computer for sequencing and audio recording. I love the sounds of those
early analog synths and believe that the key to the "synthpop sound" is
the synths they used - a sound which digital synths can't emulate even
today. I now have the capability of burning my own CD's and my "goal" is
to release my own CD before the year 2000 (I'm a perfectionist so I'm
being realistic here). Lately I've been burning alot of my rare vinyl to
CD (Alphaville, Trans-X, A Flock of Seagulls, Church, Railway Children,
etc.) so that's been taking up alot of my time.
My main influences are: MWH (of course), Alphaville, Trans-X, A Flock of
Seagulls, The Cars, Gary Numan (ahh...Polymoogs, Prophet-5's, and
Jupiter-4's), De/Vision, Anything Box, Japan, Roxy Music, early Duran
Duran, early Tears for Fears, and (one of my current favorites) Joy
Electric. I also like guitar-based bands like The Church, The Railway
Children, Cactus World News, Dream Academy, Midnight Oil, House of Love,
etc. and gothic bands like Clan of Xymox, Sisters of Mercy, the Mission,
etc.
My favorite MWH albums are in the order they were released. My favorite
songs are I Got the Message, I Like, and......don't get me started.
Looks like everyone's been keeping quite busy with the new boots and
all. Too bad I missed out on the recent demos...perhaps some kind soul

I find it interesting how one perosn hates a song while someone else loves
it to pieces! :) If it wasn't for "I Got The Message", I probably wouldn't
have been a MWH fan today. I went totally nuts when I heard this song om
the radio. I just loved the way it sunded. The beat, the nmusic, the
backup voices did the trick. I heard it after "The Safety Dance" so I am
puzzled as to why it is referred to as their first single from "Rhythm of
Youth". Perhaps the single didn't do too well so they re-released it? The
last time I went nuts was "O Sole Mio" but not as much as "I Got The
Message". Then I got excited when I heard the clip of "Open Your Eyes"
before I bought the album.
Does anyone else have a MWH song they went nuts over?

Yes.
Rhythm of Youth blows my mind!!!!! I can't stop playing that song. Its
actually my favorite MWH song right now.
For the song poll:
1. Rhythm of Youth
2. Living In China
3. I like
Can I include ROY, even though its a demo song?
I usually can't stand playing ANY song over and over again, ROY is my first
exception. I can't beleive that I can't get tired of this one.

I know this may sound strange, but "Mother's Opinion" makes me cry from time
to time. It's hard to describe, but it does. Not in a sad way, but in a
"this song touches my soul" way.
And if we're including the demos then I have to place Treblinka in 2nd
place.

For me, this one's a tie between "Antarctica" and "Ideas for Walls".
The guitar in "Antarctica" and the choppy keyboard just made it sound so dark
and powerful, while the lyrics smoothed it all out.
"Ideas for Walls"... That one just flat out makes me wanna "...ideas for
wahahooahahooahaoolls!!". It makes almost no sense yet it drives me want to
turn it up really loud and ignore reality for the short few minutes. The keys
in that song will also grabbed me.
Well, that's 2 centavos de mi.
And I... I feel like...

Sorry for the delay, but we're trying to release some software here at
work and I have not had much time until now to send anything in. I am
listed briefly on the who's who page. There, I credit myself as being one
of the two cofounders of the Atlanta Chapter of the Men Without Hats
Fanclub. Mr. Brad Day is the other cofounder. In fact, we're the only
two members. Feel free to stop in if you're ever in Atlanta. Just give
us some advance warning.
Like so many others, I got hooked on MWH in my early teens. I used to
work in my room with ROY on the turntable repeating over and over and
over. One side at a time, of course. I don't know how my parents could
take it (unless, of course, they saw the genius behind the music, too!).
Bought PGTW on cassette (and later on CD). Loved it. The first time I
saw the 21c. disc in the store I bought it, even though I did not know
that MWH had another disc out. Also like many others, I constantly comb
through the "M" section of music stores to try to find one of those
elusive ROY CDs.
Thanks to this wonderful list, I have obtained the 2-4-1, Sideways, and
The Spell -- items I would never have known existed otherwise. Everyone
here is very caring and supportive, and even though I don't contribute a
whole lot in the grand scheme of things, I always look forward to
receiving the next digest.
Yes, I am on the digest-version of the list, which is why I missed out on
the original pressing of the FPDs (Fan Produced Discs). I'm still
interested, and will be in contact with Mr. Holdman shortly. I think this
will be one purchase that I won't clear through my wife (and if you tell
her I said that, I'll deny it! :-).
Since I don't write too often, I don't feel bad about sending in a
novella...
My personal information: I'm 28 and married (just under 1.5 years). No
kids, just a cat, which my wife brought into the marriage. We get along
fine now. We bought a house almost a year ago, and I have taken to
gardening (vegetable, not flower). [I'm planning on trying to grow
potatoes this season. Last year I think I harvested over 300 cucumbers,
most of which were as big or bigger than what you see in a grocery store.
We gave away most of them, ate lots of cucumber sandwiches, and let some
rot (which was VERY unfortunate :-( ] I play indoor soccer, which I love.
I play the saxophone, but only once a year or so. I've been trying to
teach myself how to play the piano, with little success. Currently, I'm
taking German classes (no, I can't translate the message about MWH, even
though it looked German). In the future, I hope to have a wood-working
shop which rivals Norm's -- and I hope to know how to use it! I'm slowly
acquiring the tools...
Brad and I have gotten together for lunch on a few occasions. We don't
work anywhere near each other, so we don't meet that frequently. I keep
meaning to send in the minutes of our lunch meetings, but never remember
to. (So did you get a new car yet, Brad?)
Apart from MWH, my musical tastes vary widely. I'm also on the Simple
Minds mailing list (the only other mailing list that I'm on). I like (in
stream-of-consciousness order) Front 242, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Pet
Shop Boys, Erasure, Rush... I'm starting to listen more to public radio
now, however. Count me in the group that tells their grandkids, "there's
nothing like the music of the '80s." My jazz collection is also starting
to grow.
OK, I'll call it quits here. If you've made it this far, thanks for
reading. Drop me a line sometime, and I'll try to get back to you in a
reasonable amount of time. Also, for any German members of this list:
I'm planning a trip to Germany sometime this year, and would like
suggestions on where to go, where to stay, etc. Private e-mail is
requested.
Thank you,
Steve

That's *sort* of similar to something that happened to me in college.
The following is a true story...
I was part of a group of guys who loved to play practical jokes on each
other. My friend Steve knew how much I loved MWH... I played my "Rhythm Of
Youth" and "Fot80III" tapes non-stop.
One day I was in my room. I grabbed my "Fot80III" tape and popped it in the
player. Steve came sauntering into my room and plopped down on a chair. I
was busying looking for something on my cluttered desk and was unthinkingly
replying to the questions he was asking me.
He asked me, "Who is this?" (playing on the tape player)
"Men Without Hats."
"That's a weird name. Are you sure?"
"Yes. I've told you about them a million times."
"I don't believe you."
"What do you mean?"
"'Men Without *Hats*'... that's not a band name."
At this point I stopped my search, and grabbed the tape case. "Yes, it is,
see, it say so right he..."
And I froze. Placed over the red/black "no hats" logo on the tape case was
a similar logo, with a large penis where the head/hat should be. And over
the word "Hats" in the band name logo, the word "Dicks" had been placed, on
a white sheet of paper, copied in the same font.
And Steve said, "Are you sure they're not Men Without Dicks?"
And I spent a good fifteen minutes chasing his laughing ass up and down the
halls of the dorm.
I was furious then, but MAN! is it funny when I look back on it now. He got
me but good.

Richard,
I bought my PGTW CD the day after I saw MWH perform at the Cains in
Tulsa; May 5, 1988. http://people.delphi.com/mykec/hats88.htm
Mine didn't come in a box but rather in one of those nasty ol'
plastic "bubble-pak" constructs. Inside it was a 12"x4" card
with the PGTW cover art on it. It made me mad that I hadn't bought
it before the previous night's show because I had been able to
get Ivan's autograph on both my Statik copy of RoY during the show
and on my Fot80III LP cover during the afterparty at SRO.
Needless to say, I've still got the PGTW CD card insert and it is
still unsigned by Ivan. I do intend to be at the Private Ivan
concert in Montreal this summer and I'll definitely be bringing
it with me - along with everything else I've got that would look
good with bandmembers' autographs scribbled all over them! ;-)

But, I was just listening to Ideas for Walls and, something just

-------------------
In the song...the lines read
A little "m" for the mirror
A "w" for the wall
To make things perfectly clear
A great big "h" in the hall.
Now...put those three quoted letters together and you get...
MWH
I'm not some kid that goes disecting songs or anything but, I found this

Cool! I've been listening to that song since 1983 and never once noticed
that. Too busy listening to the melody and the bass line I guess (or just
really thick).
If anyone is still tabulating, I'll use this opportunity to vote for my

Just thought I'd let the list know that even though I tend to be primarily
an observer on the list I am doing my best to spread the joy of MWH. I am
part of a morning show that reaches Northern Chautauqua County in NY and
every Tuesday they are going to let me do a retro-80's day in which I will
try to have a mystery band as well as other 80's music. Today (which was
the first show) of course the mystery band was...oh, do I even have to say
it...MWH! I asked people to call in when they knew the name of the band
and sure enough when I played The Safety Dance (the last MWH song I was
going to play before I gave their name away) someone called in and won
themselves a CD. Congrats to Ivan on his Canadian success.

Wow, Collin! I feel like a compleat goober now.
I've been listening to "Ideas..." since I bought the RoY LP in 1986 and
never noticed that. (Doh!)

Isn't it strange... MWH in Idea for walls? I love it. I really love it!
Did I mention that I love it?!? Ivan and crew never ceases to amaze me.
The moment you get them figured out, they change again.... or something
you never realized, so blatently obvious, comes to light. Three cheers
for MWH and for those of you who find this obscure stuff!

The entire "Pop Goes The World" album came out at a time where things in
my life (no pun intended) were... "unfolding" around me, for want of a
better word.
It was slowly dawning on me that my long-time relationship was a sham,
that I was indeed deeply in love with someone so powerfully wonderful that
I was frightened by the depth of the emotion involved, a close friend and I
were on the outs (for reasons to this day I can't remember), I realized that my
extended childhood in academia was starting to draw to a close, and my
father's illness brought to my attention that my parents were so much *older*
than I remembered.
And then "Pop Goes The World" came out. "On Tuesday", "O Sole Mio", "In
The Name Of Angels"... and "The End Of The World". A handful of perfect
songs that reflected a lot of facets of my life.
To this day, I still feel that "The End Of The World" is the most perfect
album-ending song that's ever been written. On its own, it doesn't have the
impact that is has after listening to the entirety of the "Pop Goes The
World" album.
Anyway, that's what it means to me.

Don,
I understand your reasons why you would think "End of the World" is
the best ever album-ending song, but I would have to say I think it's
tied with "A Day In The Life". Maybe Ivan would be proud to know that
a song of his is in such good company!

This is a fun toy, but not much else. The translations are quite
atrocious, and often times outright wrong. Still, it is a good insight
into the problems of machine-translation.

Running this back through the French->English translator, it comes out
as:
The noise goes the world, by caps of Men Without that 1. noise of Intro
2. goes world 3. intelligent side of Tuesday 4. sun 5. O million 6.
single are mislaid 7. true world 8. Moonbeam 9. in the name of angels
10. Valese d' Eugenie 11. The she-ass carried the walk of black 12, on
water 13, the end of the world=20
Not *quite* what went in, but most of the problem seems to have been
with the original English->French conversions, especially 'La =
bourrique'
for Jenny...

Hi Hatters!
The first time I ever heard "You and Me," I just sat there listening
with tears rolling silently down my cheeks. I think it's a very
powerful song.
Also, the first time I heard the clip from "Open Your Eyes," I got
all goose-bumpy.

I was looking at this week's Goldmine magazine and found a listing of a BBC
radio show (concert) called "BBC Rock Hour". I wonder if it is the same as
the other BBC record. This one has Big Country, Eurythmics, and Culture
Club. Actually, now that I think of it, I wonder if this is a live record. :)
If you want to buy it, I can list the vendor (I never dealt with them so I
don't know if they rip people off or if they give great service):
David Tyson
208 Barshay Drive
Summerville, SC
29483 USA
phone (803) 821-1514
fax (803) 832-8484
e-mail: dtyson@viperlink.net
$4 postage
oh yes, the album costs $20
A little favour to ask the European members...can anyone help me find a copy
of a concert video by Spandau Ballet? It's called "Over Britain". I saw a
listing of it in "Goldmine" as a laserdisc but I assume it is also available
on video cassette. I can purchase PAL tapes because my VCR plays both PAL
and NTSC.
Thanks!

M: Men for the Mirror- the woman who when he looks through her eyes at
himself, he sees how he is.
W: Without Walls - the barriers around our minds, hearts and souls that stop
us from being who we truly are inside. placed there by our parents, our peers,
society in general, and our own hidden fears and insecurities. ("it's long,
it's hard- we hit our heads against the walls")
H: Hats are Halls: Hallways are narrow closed-in methods of perceiving what
is presented to us- a narrow viewpoint, an extremely limited method of
interpreting love and reality. Hats of course are the rings around our

I couldn't find MWH or Ivan listed in the Much Music Spotlight for
February but my wife told me that our son was watching MWH's videos when
he was home from school sick on Thursday Feb. 5th. Our son knows the
band because Ivan used to play him when he was a baby and he calls him
"Uncle Ivan" but, we haven't seen him in years.
I didn't see anything on the list about this. I assumed it was Much
Music but, maybe not. My son said they had interviews with Ivan and
played his videos. Maybe he was a guest on a talk show?

That's an interesting piece of info! :) He used to sing to your son, how
sweet. Did he use a synthesizer? ;)

That is interesting. Maybe he was in the studio before or after the
spotlight talking about his solo career.

Has anybody else noticed that Ivan seems to sneeze at the very end
of "Jenny Wore Black" during the Le Spectrum concert video? I was
watching it tonight and just happened to notice that he raises his
hand and ducks downward just before the lights go out. Man, I thought,
that would have really sucked if he'd had to sneeze while the camera
was right on him. It's hard to tell exactly what happened but if it
was a sneeze he sure concealed it well.
This isn't something really important. I just noticed and wondered
about it.

Hi Hatters!
Maybe someone in the know, like Francis, Claude, or Kerry, can fill
us in on how to pronounce Ivan's last name. I'd always kinda
wondered where the accent went?
DOR o shuk? do RO shuk? doro SHUK? etc.
Since my maiden last names are collectively 18 letters long, and
Russian and German (containing bizzare dipthongs and umlauts and
things that go bump in the night), I'm very sensitive about
mispronouncing people's last names. Which is why I'm glad he just
goes by IVAN! *That* I can manage!!!! :-)

Here is a list of people that should be expecting CD#4.
1. Jeff Schachter 2. Michael Scott Shirk 3. Claude 4. Charlotte 5. Russ K
6. Richard Holdman
Those CD#4s are already on the way. I am preparing to make some more CDs
soon.
In the meantime, if you are not one of the above people, feel free to ask
Richard Holdman for a copy. He is ready to make up some #4s now.
If I have not answered your e-mails, its because I am swamped at work and
am very busy. I have a job interview tommorow and hope I get a HUGE
promotion. Problem is I am the least qualified of the other finalists, but
I don't give a dam. I will try and act like I am smarter than I really am
in the interview.
Anyway, after that fiasco is over, whether I get the job or not, I will be
able to make more CDs.
I really HATE not having the time to talk to my hats friends, but ... well
you know how work can be, especially if you are trying to scam your way

For the zillion time: you can find that information in the Men Without
Hats FAQ (frequently asked questions) web site (
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/3136/home_mwh.html ), More
precisely in the Who's Who section (
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/3136/whoswho_mwh.html ).
Makes me wonder why this adress is not part of the mailing
signature?!?!?!?!?!?
Take care

CD #4 is ready to go out. I plan on making about 30 or so CDs in the
next few days.
The price for CD #4 is
$10 without Artwork
$15 with Artwork.
This includes shipping
I would prefer everybody to get it with the artwork since I am
getting the artwork printed on a press and dont want to be stuck with
a buch of extras (I have enough artwork for about 80 Cds), but I know
that there are some that dont have enough money.
Also CDs 1,2,3,5 are still available.
If you want any of these cds send a check to

The MWH archive can be found at http://www.holdman.com/mwh
I songs to do not fade out at the end so You will hear the crowd
yelling and then it will just stop. This was done on purpose because
the next version of WINAMP will support multiple mp3 playback without
pausing inbetween songs.

Subject: (hats) Bootleg #2 Artwork messed up
Date: 12 Feb 1998 09:00:44 +0000
It was bound to happen.
When I made the artwork for the CDs I was up until 4am working on
them so they could get printed. On CD#4 the track listing is off by
one on the whole CD. I made the artwork by looking at the first set
of CDs that were made without the Intro Track. So the artwork starts
with track 1 which is heaven, but really the CD starts with track 1
being the intro track and then track 2 is heaven.
I feel real stupid for doing this, but such is life.
Anyway to make it up to everyone that got CD#2 from me I will send
you a new CD liner with the right track info. If you were one of
these people that bought CD#2 from me and want a new track listing
let me know and I will drop it in the mail for you. Let me know soon
so I can get them all out at once. Also let me know if you just
ordered CD#4 from me so I can just send it with that and save a
little on postage.
The CD label on the disc also has the same problem so Let me know if
you want a new sticker also for the CD. I have tested putting a cd
sticker over another one and it looks pretty good.
Finally, if you are really ticked that you have to do this and want
another CD with the right artwork, please send the Old CD back to me
and I will send you out a new one with the right artwork. I would
prefer just to send out the artwork but since this was my fault I
will replace the CD for you if you really want to.
Sorry about all this maddness
-Richard
P.S. All CDs sent out from this day on will have the right artwork.
:)

Hi Hatters!
Sorry to clutter the list with my travel plans, but there are a lot
of people contacting me about various things, and I thought that one
general email might be best.
If I haven't gotten back to you immediately, my apologies! We're
having crazy fits at work this week and next, and I've been away from
my desk for most of the week so far.
I will be in Florida tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday (dog show), so I
won't be checking and responding to email those days.
And as if that weren't bad enough, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of
next week I will be at a business conference on the other side of the
state!!
So for the next week, I just wanted to let everyone who might be
trying to reach me know that I will be away from the office. I will
have Mr. Laura check our home email account for important messages.
That email address is jlkramer@interpath.com If you need something
right away, send an email to that address with URGENT in the subject
line - I will tell Jim to look for that.
Back here on the 19th .. .
Have a good one, everybody!

Date: 15 Feb 1998 13:42:48 -0500
Dear Hatters,
Last night during my usual insomnia I had an idea that I have
not heard disscussed on the list during my tenure. I think it would be a
good idea if we made fan produced videos of different MWH songs. We
could use our computers to animate the videos. Granted I do not have the
software(or probably the computer for that matter) to make good ones on
but I sure at least one of us on the list has something we could use. I
would be more than willing to help come up with ideas for the videos
visually as I am sure many others would be willing to do.
If anyone has an interest in getting this project off the ground
please contact me with what you would be able to contribute, especially
if you have any experience doing something like this, because I do not
have a clue where to begin on my own in terms of the actual animating.
Thanks,
Whit

Hum.... I'm not sure, but I like the idea of an outside show, espacially at
spring. An outside show would be more difficult to manage ("privacy" and the
weather as well), but it would be really cool! And, finally, is there a
consensus about who can attend this show? Only us and friends or also others?
If the show is not advertized outside the list, maybe it can be held outside
without any major problems.

There is a lot of uncertainty about an outside show... The weather, people,
noise, license, etc. But some musical bars do have outdoor installations; and
those places can easily switch from outside to inside if, for example, the
weather goes bad: they decide that in the morning, depending of the forecast.
They also have the sound system, can collect tickets at the door, etc.
So, if we can find such a place in Montreal, then we could think of an outside
show. Else, the more I think about it, the more difficult it gets.

Around the time we came up with the idea of putting on the private show, I
mentioned that my brother and I would like to be the supporting act. The plan
was for he and I
(he is in a band called Wine Field who just finished a tour of France and
Holland, and
I am a singer/multi-instrumentalist with lots of stage experience) to play
about 5 to 7
acoustic/electric covers of songs that greatly influenced Ivan in his younger
days
(Roxy, Genesis, Bowie, whatever). That, I guess, depends on how the list
members feel about a short, very professional opening act before the show.

Last night I saw a commercial on TNT for Entertainment Weekly
magazine. They're offering a rather interesting premium if you
subscribe now: a two-cd collection of "80's New Wave Hits." They
said it's almost two hours of music from 24 artists, but they only
listed 13. They showed video clips from groups like Culture Club
(Church of the Poison Mind), Eurythmics (Sweet Dreams), The Vapors
(Turning Japanese), Modern English (Melt With You), Adam Ant (Goody
Two-Shoes), and at the end...you guessed it, they actually showed a
video clip from The Safety Dance!
Yet another compilation listing for the discography. I'll probably
subscribe just to get the cds. I liked all the songs I heard, and the
cost is only $24.

I just saw a new CD called "Massive Dance Hits Vol. 3" and it contains the
"Ripchord Radio Mix" of Open Your Eyes by Ivan. This series I believe is
only out in Canada, and could easily be ordered from HMV in Toronto
(1-800-567-8468) if you have to have this remix. Just some info for the

going to stop fighting and get with the program, so the REST of us indians
will have a show to go to!
i know i am speaking for no less than 3-5 people in my regional neck of the
woods when i say that something needs to be 'carved in stone' right away, as
the airfare right now is going to range from $450-$600 *or in MY case,
$700+*...and the longer this thing is fought over and delayed, the more that a
lot of us are going have to *unneccessarily* pay in the long run.....ice
storms and such aside...i think that the time is NOW!
i will also go further to say that if nothing has been booked/solidified
*date-wise by mid-march, i myself will have no choice but to consider the
whole thing a 'no-show', and book my trip independantly, i do not like the
thought of the possibility that an even larger chunk of my canada trip kitty
will go towards my airfare the longer i wait on this....
if this makes me an impatient b***h, then so be it...but i feel this is long
overdue...

That would be a good idea though to put all the versions of safety

I have a cd-single with two versions of the Bio-Mix Safety Dance.
They're basically the same, but one's longer. Maybe that's what

It is not the first time Francis is misinterpreted! What he meant was
that the difference in the Electric Guitars mix is an additionnal track
of electric guitar and an additionnal track of live drums (vs drum
machine).

I just completed a month-long search for the CD of the Let's Active

There is a song on "Afoot" called "Room With a View" that sounds like
it could have come straight from the "Freeways" EP. It's really eerie...

I have been exchanging messages with Bruce Murphy over the past few days.
I tracked him down through a work related mailing list (as you all may
recall, he's now a dentist - and I sell dental software).
He wants us all to know that he will soon be doing some solo recording
again. He is also very interested in knowing about the private show in
Montreal in June - says he'll try to crash on Ivan's couch!
He also mentioned that some demos from a 1994 concept album he and Ivan
worked on might be floating around and that he would really like to get his
hands on them. Album was called UFOs are Real. Anyone know about these???
Looking forward to getting firm dates for the Montreal show - my neighbour
just about went ballistic when I told her about this show so there might be
a couple of more interested people!

Here they are:
1992 Sideways part II - French
1994 UFOs R Real
1995-96 French Jazz album
There is also a demo album like ROY demo tape from right before Pop Goes
the World. The song "Heaven" from Specturm show is probably on this
album.
We sure need this stuff don't we?

I have been exchanging messages with Bruce Murphy over the past few days.
I tracked him down through a work related mailing list (as you all may
recall, he's now a dentist - and I sell dental software).
He wants us all to know that he will soon be doing some solo recording
again. He is also very interested in knowing about the private show in
Montreal in June - says he'll try to crash on Ivan's couch!
He also mentioned that some demos from a 1994 concept album he and Ivan
worked on might be floating around and that he would really like to get his
hands on them. Album was called UFOs are Real. Anyone know about these???
Looking forward to getting firm dates for the Montreal show - my neighbour
just about went ballistic when I told her about this show so there might be
a couple of more interested people!

print the artwork from adobe at http://www.adobe.com
Also this is a good way to view the artwork if you want to see what

I didn't and I blame it on Shaw cable. My cable reception was acting up
during the week they ran that video. The only copy of Open Your Eyes I have is
filled with distortion, noise and gaps. I'm not complaining though, since in
my opinion it's not the best video around. I like superbadgirls better and I
just happen to have that one taped in excellent condition. :-)

Subject: (hats) 12" mixes on cdr of some groups you might like....
Date: 25 Feb 1998 01:17:52 -0800 (PST)
Well, I'm sending this message to my fave mailing lists since you might be
interested in this. I've had a big response for those Orb cd-rs I'm making
and I thought I'd do a whole series of artists also since I know many of
you probably would like some of those cool 12" only mixes on cd, or you
just don't want to wear out the vinyl. I'm eventually going to put my
entire collection on cd so if you want a copy of stuff I have, let me know.
The following is a listing of some stuff I was going to put on cdr for some
of my fave groups. Let me know if you're interested in any of them (I'll
customize them for you if you want.) Each cd-r is $15.00 (for anything you
want and that includes shipping). I'm not going to do anything that's still
in print since that's just not right, but I figure out of print stuff isn't
too bad...If you have different suggestions for what you want, let me know.
All 12" remixes are going to be cleaned with Cool Edit Pro and Sound Forge
to reduce the noise from the original source. I hope to have the cds
sounding better than the originals...
All of the remixes come from white labels, promos, deleted or limited
singles and stuff. I do have some Dj mixes, let me know if you want em. If
you want to forward this to other interested mailing lists, that's okay,
but I am trying to keep it low key....=o) Here's a brief listing of the
bands you'll find:
Check out the following page for synth artists:
www.groovemusic.com/synthpop.html
Artists featured: Art of Noise, Baby Ford (Rhythm King), Bananarama,
Beloved, Boxcar, Brilliant, Gray Clail/Tackhead, Dead Or Alive (Fan the

Influence, remixes), I Start Counting, Jesus loves You, Madonna, Men
Without Hats (Interview), New order/Electronic (Until the end of time), Pet
Shop boys, Pop Will Eat Itself, Real Life, Re-Flex, Propaganda, Swing Out
Sister, Talk Talk, Lost Tracks and One Hit Synth Wonders...
Electronic artists featured at:
www.groovemusic.com/electronic.html
Artists featured: Altern 8, BT, Richard Dekkard, Sasha, Chemical Brothers,
Fluke, Fortran 5, Hani, KLF, Leftfield, Lionrock, Orb, Orbital, William

Hi Hatters!
Scott asked . . .

> so, is it available in Germany?
As far as I know, Carl is still unable to make the 2-fer available in
North America. I will be receiving another 30 2-fers soon, and some
are not yet "reserved." Anyone who wants a 2-fer, write to me with
your snail address and phone number, and I will give you what limited
info I currently have and will put you on my waiting list.
For the people who were on the first list (for the 2-fers from Thomas
Bieler in Germany): Disks 21-25 just arrived in the country
yesterday, so 26-30 (Nicholas, David, George, Dave, and Dave)
probably just 2 more weeks!!!
People on the new list: (Michael, Kerry, Stephen, Nathan, Jon, Alain,
Chris, and Nick) - no word yet on when yours will be here. Carl
shipped them last week, so they need to get to England first, then
Mikey will send them to me. Man, this is complicated!!!

Unfortunately, I just don't have the tools to be dubbing videos. (only one
VCR) But I do realize that we is a nice family and sharing is the proper
thing to do. :) I promise (solomly) that you can count on my copy of SBG
when the next fan produced video collection is made. The current video
collection (to my understanding) is lacking some 3 or 4 MWH videos including
the Freeways video etc. That with 2 or 3 Ivan videos could make a possible
Video Collection II. Or a new updated version of the current one. But I
believe that one is almost stuffed to the limit, yes?
Anyways, all I can offer right now is some still shots I grabbed from the
video using one of those Snappy deals. I'll post them on my web page for a
few....
In the mean time if anyone has the Freeways video please make yourself
known!!! Puh-lease!!!

I have an unfinished IVAN videotape right now. I would eventually like to
put "superbadgirls" and "1972" on it as well. Maybe you can send your
videotape to me so I can dub it, then return it. Perhaps we should wait,
just in case an Ivan spotlight comes on in the near future. You never
know.
By the way,
We also need a Living In China video, anyone?????
Senz,
Hold onto that tape. Be prepared to catch "1972", thats the next one.

I got bored this afternoon at work (well it was Friday after all) so I
came up with the idea of ppl listing their top 5 albums, and giving and
explanation why. Some of the techies had a pop at my top 5 and were
completely wrong - quite funny really.
So, if you are at all game, list your favourite top 5 albums (not
necessarily in order) with a brief explanation why (2 lines tops - OK,
maybe 3). You might think of obvious choices like the first album you
bought, the first one you gave away etc but once you have a list _really_
think about it!!! They dont have to be Hats albums - they didn't get in
my top 5! I was hard pushed to list just 5, but after 4 hours I gave in
and listed them. I'll see what other people send in before I tell you
mine - a bit of a shy creature at heart :)
We had quite an afternoon discussing ppl's choices... so give it a whirl!
If you don't wanna play then go outside and do something else!

Hey Folks,
Been a Hats fan since day one. Have almost all the vinyls, singles, and
CDs. Bought my first CD player back in 1985, along with Rhythm and Folk III
on disc. I attended not only the Folk Of The 80's tour at the Centre
Sportif in 1984 but the 1985 Old Port and Spectrum Freeways Tour as well. I
even had the chance to catch myself full face in the video. In the fall of
1990 I caught the "new" Hats at Foufounes with John Kastner, Mitsou, Felix
Matte, and Away. Just saw Ivan open for Duran at Metropolis in December,
pretty fuckin' cool. Lookin' forward to meeting other fans and trading info
and stories about the Hats. I'd also love to hear a copy of the LIVE Tour
from 1983.
All The Best,
Bobby

Oh, I love stuff like this!
Mine are, in no particular order:
1) QUEEN - "Queen II"
Magical, musical, brilliant, camp, powerful... One of the few
vinyl albums I've ever had to replace due to extensive play.
2) EBN-OZN - "Feeling Cavalier"
Fun, surprisingly complex techno-pop that was criminally underrated.
"AEIOU Sometimes Y" is a work of pop GENIUS. I love quirky music!
3) JELLYFISH - "Spilt Milk"
The greatest pop album of the 90's. There is so much to listen to
on this disc: bubblegum, harmonies, soaring guitars... amazing.
4) MILES DAVIS - "Kind Of Blue"
I just discovered this album last fall. It's one of the few perfect
albums I've ever listened to. There's nothing else like it.
5) PRINCE - "Lovesexy"
This was released during a pivotal point in my life. And the musical
message just can't be ignored. "This is not music... this is a trip."
NEAR-MISSES:
Men Without Hats - "Pop Goes The World"
Prince - "Purple Rain"
The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds"
Queen - "A Night At The Opera"
Cornershop - "When I Was Born For The 7th Time"
Silver Sun - "Silver Sun"
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
Yes - "The Yes Album"
A Flock Of Seagulls - "Listen"
George Michael - "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1"

It certainly was hard to pare this down to my top 5 albums, but here
they are, and why:
5. They Might Be Giants: Flood. 1990.
Group: TMBG nasally mixes humor and oddity with bouncy accordion
music.
Album: This is their best album, IMHO. Almost no dud songs on it.
Best Song: "We Want a Rock"
4. Jazz Butcher (Conspiracy): Bloody Nonsense. 1986.
Group: JBC is a literate Brit pop group with excellent songwriting.

Subject: (hats) Idea for opening act
Date: 28 Feb 1998 16:03:25 -0500
Hi, Hatters,
The discussion that's been going on about the opening act for the Ivan
fan club show has given me an idea. Here it is. Since there is a MWH
covers CD being put together, and most of the people involved are going
to be at the concert, why not have the various groups (or some subset of
them) do their Hats covers as the opening act. We could set it up like
so everyone uses the same microphones, amps, and drum kit, but brings
their own instruments (keys, guitars, and basses) up with them. This
would allow us to transitition between artists quite quickly (this is the
same idea they use at most open mike nights).
This would give us the advantage of an opening act that we wouldn't have
to pay. People would already know the songs. People would already know
the artists and the interpretations of the songs since the CD would be
readily available to list members. Finally, it would keep it sort of a
"family" affair since all of the opening artists would be list members.
