From the lack of Hats mail I have received lately I am wondering one of three
things:

1. Was I accidentally dropped from the list?
2. Is everyone wondering about the CDs but paranoid to ask, "What's up with
the CDs...it's been a while. Someone give us an update"?
3. Has everyone got their CDs but me and are so glued to their stereos that
they can't write?

Please tell me it's not #2. I have been ripped off this way before. Not on
this list, but on another. I really enjoy this list and feel I can trust the
people on it. Thomas or Laura, please put our minds at ease.

Yep, it has been awfully quiet!  I think it's coz we're all waiting,
holding our breath, and not enough oxygen is getting to our brains to
enable us to type.  ;-)

I believe Thomas sent out the discs late last week - I have been out
of town (dog show again - we were awful, but I got a great tan), and
haven't logged on at home in a while.  The hold-up was on the US end
- most of the people who were going with the "one big check" method
were very prompt, but some were not.  Sorry!!

In order to get the cheapest postage, Thomas had to send the discs
all at once, and we didn't want to ship them before most everybody
on the "obc" had paid.  Remember, Thomas had a *very substantial*
financial outlay to get the discs to us, and we should all understand
that he wanted to minimize his risk (although I believe that we
Hatters are a trustworthy lot).  The "obc" alone is about $800, so
imagine that plus all the people who went on their own or traded, and
you see how far out on a limb Thomas went for us.

Hope everyone relaxes a bit!  I think things are under control...

headlights I answered "Jim Carey and Michael J Fox".  It was only about five minutes
later when I went "doh!" and thought of MWH!  Oh well, hopefully it wasn't broadcast to

Amen, brother.

Well, it was nice to at least see some mail come through the list, if
anything. Thanks. And that glimmer of hope with your title until I actually
opened the mail.

I have decided for my own sanity that I am going to assume the CDs were lost
'in the mail' and that I will just have to wait until I physically go to
Europe or some other continent that Carl has hopefully found a distributor in.
I still have more hope than a year ago when we were not sure if we would ever
see those tracks burned onto a CD. At least we know the CD exists. Something
to pursue.

Oklahoma. I first became interested in Men W/out Hats during a Boy Scout
camping trip. My leader was playing Rhythm of Youth, and I found a copy
at a local used record store. I have 2 albums and the new collection cd.
I enjoy all kinds of music and have about a thousand albums, seven
hundred cds and around a hundred 45s. I like all kinds of music, but Men
Without Hats are just wonderful pop music.

Hi everyone!

I went to the post office today to ask for possible reasons for the delay
of the ROY shipments.

My request resulted in the following:

It IS possible that the letters are transported less fast because of the
discount on postage I received. That's annoying. I didn't see any reason to
even think about if it might be a difference. To me, the discount is for that
they have less trouble by accepting 40 letters at one time (with the letters
also meeting strict criteria) than having 40 people coming to the office and
posting one letter each. It's like you'd get second-class tomatoes if you
bulk-buy them.

Let's explore the positive angle: It seems that we don't need to worry,
everything is within usual parameters.
:-)


Please keep reporting when you get your CD.
Phil, did you get your CD or did you just reply to my message from April 1st?

What is going on with the 2 on 1 distribution? I've contacted Oglio
twice and they keep telling me to call back in 2 weeks and maybe
they'll have something set up. Well nothing seems to be set up yet
and I have to ask, What the hell is taking so long!!
The CD's have been pressed for 2 months now and I can't get one. Is
this some evil tease? I was told that they are searching for a
distributer that will import it back to the U.S. for a price close to
domestic CD's. Well I'm sure I speak for more than myself when I say
that I'd be willing to pay the usual $20 import price for it then wait another
month or 2. Hurry up already, I think 14 years is long enough to
wait. Don't you?

I am asking myself the same question. The distributors I contacted did not show much
interest. Techno is hot in Europe and MWH does not fit the current trend. I will
find someone but it will take some time.

In the mean time I suggest you contact one of the MWH fans outside the USA/Canada to
see if they will help you. Each week I sell a few more to countries ranging from
Germany to Japan. Be patient.

Hello,
I got my 2 for 1 Cd in the mail.  I did not know it was one Cd.  I thought
it was 2 cds! Sometimes I wonder how my brain functions...

Well, the remastering is great!  My only beef is why does "I Got The
Message" fade in?  Weren't there supposed to be pictures of the record
sleeves in the booklet too?  Or was that only for the North American
release?  It was great reading the sleeve notes for "Folk of the 80s part
III"--they weren't on the Canadian issue weren't they?

_CD_. Or at least as close as we could get in the combo process.

I don't recall any fades. If others have the same complaint I'll look

sorry carl - it does have a fade in though it is the same as the DAT
someone sent ages ago - therefore you've probably duplicated it!!  Oh

this article appeared in May 1997 edition of Future Music here in the UK
- one of the major synth/technology mags - thought you might like to read
it, and the follow up i sent to them which (i'm assured by the editor
andy jones) will appear in the july issue:

Under teh banner "Wanted dead or alive"
Men Without Hats

they made a video featuring country folk dancing round a Maypole.  They
came from Canada and they were definately sans chapeaux.  So are the Men
Without Hats without a deal, or what?

'We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind, because
your friends dont dance and if they dont dance, well they're no friends
of mine...'

In the heady days of the first flush of the Old Romo, Men Without Hats
popped up with the era's most memorable and refreshing tune, the
above-quoted Safety Dance.  The band was formed in Montreal in 1977 by
brothers Ivan and Jeremy Doroschuk, experimenting in the family home's
basement.  Jeremy was the drummer, while Ivan was the band's heart-throb
singer, a man with a strong jaw line, flowing locks and a powerful
low-register voice, trained by his voice-teaching mother.

They released an EP on a small label, Folk Of The 80s, a punning title
which did much to define the band's sound, a sort of proto-folk with
synthesisers, and also neatly categorised them for the world's press when
they caught on.  It was the legendary Stiff label which first brought
them to the UK, licensing the EP over here and causing a minor commotion.
 Jeremy left the band after another single, Nationale Seven and the band,
still fronted by Ivan became even more of a family affair with Stefan
(guitar/violin) and Colin (keyboards) Doroschuck and drummer Allan
McCarthy.

It was this lineup that recorded the hugely successfull Rhythm Of Youth
and the global hit single, Safety Dance (number 3 in America and number 6
over here).  It was the single which broke the band, helped along by a
superb video directed by Tim Pope, who would later make some of the
decade's most entertaining and wierd videos.

On the hits front, MWH dissappeared, although they have continued
recording ever since.  None of their records have made an impact over
here, but their popularity in pockets of civilisation, not least their
native Canada (where they were the biggest pop export the country had
enjoyed since, God pity them, Rush), has kept Ivan in the studio.

1984's Folk OF The 80s blipped in the US charts to number 127, while
1987's Pop Goes The World featuring Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull on flute,
fared little better.  When two more albums, The Adventures... (1989) and
Sideways (1991) bombed in the UK and the US, most people wrote the band
off.

However, platinum sales in Canada (100,000 sales) is no joke, and Ivan
and Stefan have a new album in the very near future, a fact which is
keeping the several MWH web sites in a state of some excitement.  It's
unlikely it'll make the shelves of your local Our Price, though.

Hmmm men without hats!  they've had more stuff out recently which your
'wanted dead or alive' didn't show - a 'best' of collection plus the
re-issue of the first 2 albums on a 2-for-1 CD (both on oglio records
from california) plus one of the Internet fan clubs produced a set of 4
bootleg CDs comprising 2 live, 1 of the early recordings previously
unavailable on CD and the first 2 albums released before oglio's
masterpiece... and that new one due out soon!  I didn't mention the live
video did I?

In all they have had 5 top 100 Billboard hits - not bad for 'one hit
wonders'...

you can dance if you want!

   As I am new to  this list I don't know how many Canadians are on it, and
if anyone on the list works in a record store. The cheapest way to get
copies would be if someone working in a store could buy copies at cost, and
charge the extra for postage, can anyone do that for people in the U.S. and
other countries? I've got an e mail in to Tox Records, but I don't think
they are set up to do mail order, if anybody knows differently please post.
   The other option is to order it through the HMV Superstore in Toronto,
their 1-800 number should be accessible from the U.S. . They should have a
fairly decent price on it when it gets released, I'm not sure what they
charge for shipping. Their number is 1-800-567-8468 . If anyone knows of
other Canadian record chains that have a North American 1-800 number,
please post.
   Has anyone heard the first single or seen the video yet? I hope the
above info is of some help to some of you.

Me, three!  Literally.  I'm getting 5.  One arrived within a week of
Thomas sending it.  The second arrived midweek last week.  The other
3 are still in the aether with everyone elses.  I checked with the
post office in Raleigh, and the guy (who I swear sounded just like
Boomhauer on King of the Hill) offered the hypothesis that the disks
somehow (even though the two I got *explicitly say* "Air Mail")
were sent by surface mail.  I will find a more functionally literate
postal service representative and keep you posted.

Meanwhile, everyone who has gotten at least one of their disks, make
sure you let Thomas and/or me know.  Thomas is just about out of
fingernails he's been biting them so long.

Francis - the stickers sound like a fun idea!

Everyone - I'm still high on the idea of getting MWH T-shirts, and am
willing to organize it.  My concert T (from ROY!!) is a white "muscle
shirt" (no sleeves) with the logo in red and black.  The back was
blank.  What do you think of...

on the front of a white T-shirt (with regular T-shirt sleeves)
    the logo in red and black (what can I say, I'm a traditionalist!)

and, on the back... (centered)
    The Great Ones Remember

On the plus side, having the email address gives us greater exposure,
but on the negative side, we run the risk of becoming [even more]
dated if the email changes.  Thoughts?  Maybe we can discuss this on
the list before I talk to the T-shirt printer dude about costs, etc.

list all of the albums.  A lot of people only know about ROY.

Hey all,

    First of all, I assume everyone has gone and looked at that info on The
Spell (http://www.oz.net/~goreal/menwithouthats/) ...how cool.  "Open Your
Eyes" is absolutely stuck in my head, even just from that little sound clip.
It sounds like it could be a huge smash hit...if people hear it!  It just
brims with that classic Ivan idealism, as do the lyrics to the other songs.
The clip reminded me (in a good way) of Limahl's "Neverending Story", with a
very fresh, open sound.  It sounds just techno enough to be hip, without any
of that 21st Century Dafety Dance/Chemical Brothers-style noise.  I can't wait
to hear the album.

    I have to admit, I liked "Sideways" a lot, and my other musical tastes
(besides MWH) don't include synth pop.  So at first, I was a bit disappointed
to hear the new record would be all electronic (I was probably alone in that
feeling, I know! :-)  But now I'm really psyched for this record; I think it's
going to be great.

    2-fer: I still haven't got mine either.  I keep telling myself that after
waiting 10 uncertain years, a little wait like this is not important.  That
almost works, too. :)  A faded-in "I Got the Message" would be pretty lousy,
as the beginning of that song always gives me chills, but in the end...IT
EXISTS and IT'S COMING, and that's what counts!

    T-shirt: call me obvious, but I think the logo & "Men Without Hats" on the
front and "You can dance if you want to" on the back would be best.  But heck,
I'd just like to have that logo on a tee, so anything will be cool.

Well, I just got Sideways yesterday in a store that deals with imports in
Buffalo, NY.  Sideways, the song, is really catchy but I think I have to
listen to the rest of the album a couple of times to let it grow on me.
It's definitely different from ROY, PGtW, etc.  I can also get 21st
Century in the same store but I'm a little short on cash and wondered if
it was worth the $20 to get or maybe I should hold off to the summer when
I can make a little more money.
    All the other ideas, T-shirts, stickers,  etc. let me know whats
happening.  I think most on the list will be interested.

My vote is that 21st C is worth a few days of eating macaroni and

Around here (down south, far away from Canada), it's a desperate
struggle to find *any* MWH music, so whenever I see some, I grab it
(except for the "Aussie Remix" CD - one was more than enough!).  21st
C has some great stuff on it, and I'd really feel for you if you held
off getting it, and then couldn't.

I agree with Laura.  Anything by MWH is worth the cash.  They're obviously
classics now and always will be.  This weekend, in fact, I'm planning on
picking up "21st Century" in a store at an undisclosed location for $20.
I've seen it there twice, and I've left it there twice.  But not this
weekend.

     And I haven't received my 2-for-1 in the mail from Thomas either.  I
did, however, receive a new catalog from Oglio in the mail, which because
of its glossy look and professional feel, made a good change from the old,
yellow photocopied flyers I've gotten in the past.
     I didn't think the porn star with the Oglio sign in front of her was
necessary, though.  Kind of sexist, I thought.
     What's the connection with New Wave and pornography, anyway?

Listening to Sideways it is growing on me.  (I loved Sideways from the

I second this idea.  I remember when "Sideways" came out, Jim Davis and I
thought about making the trek up to Canada to see him, but we never did.
 I've regretted it since...  Ah well, I don't plan to let this opportunity
slip by again.  My Mom lives in Northern Idaho, and maybe I can work in a
visit to her then drive up to Vancouver...

they become available.  Dates for the Canadian promotional radio tour will be

Hey Men and Women With or Without Hats Almost in the 21st Century,

     Today, April 23, 1997, at precisely 3:21 p.m., is a great day.  My
wife walked in while I was at the computer writing a research paper and
threw a little, brown cardboard box in my lap.
     "Looks like you got a CD," she said, throwing her coat on the futon
and disappearing down the hall into the kitchen.
     CD?  I thought.  What CD?  It had been so long I had almost
forgotten.
     But let me be one of the first to say that it's fabulous.  Great
sound, great packaging, great liner notes.  Nice one, Carl.  It almost
makes me want to forgive you for sending me catalogs with women in the
buff on them.
     I don't know how it happened, but mine was sent to me from Laura's
address, and I worked exclusively through Thomas.  Either way, I got mine!
Two jillion thanks to Laura and Thomas!  I can finally dance now that I've
been wanting to for about ten years.
     Let's keep in touch and do this again.
     Anyway, back to work.

I was really happy to hear Matt Babcock say that he got his CD.  I hope I have

I checked out the Tox Records web site today and read about the new Ivan album
'The Spell'  I'm so excited about it.  When is it being released or has it
already been released?  Also, was it released in the US?  If not, where can I
order it?  Does anyone know anything about the tour?  I'm from Louisiana.  Do
you think he'll make it that far south?  If not, I will travel to see him just
as I will wait patiently for my CD.  It has to come one day, right?

Re: the return address on the 2fer CDs -- Thomas and I thought it would
be best/easiest to put my return address on the CDs, so if there was a
problem with delivery, I could contact you more easily and re-send the
disks with much less hassle than if they got sent back to Thomas, who
then would have to contact me to contact you, then I would get him the
updated info, and he would resend the disks from Germany.  Whew!!  So
anyway, that's why US and Canada disks have my return address on them
even if you negotiated directly with Thomas.

A couple of days ago, I posted a message to the list asking people if there
were a way to convert the .aiff format clip of "Open Your Eyes" to .au
format.

Some people responded with suggestions which I tried but couldn't get to work.

So then I e-mailed Tox Records directly and asked them if they could place
an .au format clip on the site along with the .aiff one.

I just received an e-mail from fellow Hatter Kevin ([e-mail])
informing me that now, there is indeed an .au clip on the Ivan site!

I got there as fast as my lousy browser would take me, and sure enough,
there it was! I clicked on it, and a few seconds later wonderful music was
coming out of my SparcStation's speaker. If this 30-second snippet is any
indication of what's on this new album, I will be calling HMV Toronto as
soon as I wake up on May 6th.

WOW! God, I hope his tour takes him to the San Francisco area...

Yes, I've had my copy of Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80's (Part III)
for a couple of weeks, now.  It's awesome!  Too bad my car's CD player
isn't working currently...

Anyway, I have a couple of questions:  I know that the CD was pressed
with the same songs as on the original _CDs_.  1) Is the original
(Canadian) LP (yes, on vinyl) any different from the original CD?  2)
The cover of my vinyl LP (U.S. version) has "Rhythm of Youth" in red and
black letters (same scheme as "Men Without Hats" across the top of the
cover), but this CD has it written with blue and black letters.  Is that
the same as the CD and/or original vinyl?

[Oh, and I'm subscribed to the digest, so any replies won't show up to
me for quite a while.  Is there any chance of sending the digest out
daily?  I'm on another list which does this, and it is more manageable
this way.  It doesn't take as long reading a little each day as opposed
to reading a bunch every couple of weeks... Just my thoughts...]

I'm definately interested!!
I was talking to the manager at an HMV here in Calgary, though, and he
said that songs can be released without an actual product being
available to comsumers. We couldn't quite nail down how it is that an
artist's single gets chosen for actual production as a CD single. Except
that it involves the public reaction to the song.
Personally I'd love to react to the song if I could just hear the WHOLE
song!!! Has anybody been able to react to it in this way yet!!?

Well, the CD finally got here and sounds great to me. I didn't notice any
flaws. Thanks for putting this deal together, you two!
On a non-MWH note (since many of you seem to be fans of other synth bands), I
just got the new ABC cd, which has been previously mentioned on this list,
and agree that it's very good. Also, does anyone know what John Foxx, Bruce
Wooley, or Tony Mansfield have been up to in the last 10 years or so? Also,
has anyone heard the new Heaven 17 CD and how is it?
And now, back to MWH......  A friend of mine in Canada has promised to send
me a copy of Ivan's CD as soon as it comes out. Now that the 2on1 CD is here,
it's time to wait again.

I have a strange question for everyone, which has been on my mind for a while
now.... How do you pronounce Ivan?  You see there are two pronounciations and
I was wondering which one was the 'correct' one.
The 'I' in Ivan can be said with a long i like 'eye' or can be said with a
short i like in 'it'.
I don't know why, but I've always used the short i, and indeed anyone I know
who talks about MWH also uses the short i, no doubt because of me...
So is it long i or short i? Ivan or Ivan?

Old Johnno had been doing nuthing by himself (though his albums are now
out on CD) though he has been doing some work with other ppl - can't
remember the band name...  The Heaven 17 CD is OK - their usual stuff
though there are a few 'obvious' singles... not too bad.  Better than the
recent Erasure CD (and I _am_ a vince devotee) I might add!

Right, off to conquer the world!

Bruce Woolley has been working with Thomas Dolby ou tin Cali, not sure
when, how, why or with hwat, but his name is one Dolby's web site...If
anyone knows how to get in touch with Mr Woolley...

The new Heaven 17 is good, not their best but loads better than Psycho,
Duke and Teddybear and even Pleasure One.  If you are at all a fan pick
it up... but no US release is on site... sigh...back to topic!-

If you could ask Ivan any question, what would it be? ;-)

Hello.

I am new to the list.  I primarily subscribed to find out where to get the
Rhythm of Youth cd, which I have been trying to get for several months.  If
you have a minute could you also tell me where it is available, when you
find out.  Do you live in US or Canada (where it is supposedly "not
available")?

I am surprised and thrilled that Ivan apparently has a new cd coming out.
I must call my friend in Vancouver to get one for me...

I just bought the new ABC today and it's pretty cool.  I totally loved
their first two or three albums but they lost me just after "One Better
World".  I didn't like their "housey" phase.  The new one sounds really
different!!

I was looking at the new Heaven 17 in Virgin this afternoon but god knows
what it sounds like so decided against spending $25 on such an unknown.  I
had heard that the ABC harkened back to Beauty Stab (which I loved) so took
the risk there.

There are two new John Foxx cds out in Europe:"Cathedral Oceans" and
"Shifting City" (one is instrumental).  I have as yet been unable to obtain
them for myself.  If you want more info just ask...  or try

It's funny that you mention this now, I just spent last weekend trying
to get my hands on that CD!!  New, used, anything, I just want it.  I
went to a number of new and/or used stores in the Detroit area and found
nothing.

From what I have been told, it is not made in the US any more.  I have a
store called MEDIA PLAY trying to get it for me from overseas.  I don't
have much faith in getting that...

Again, any help would be appreciated.

A number of us sent checks to Thomas Bieler in Germany and he rounded up
a number of the CD's and sent them to us.

BTW...out of curiousity, now that the new CD is out and all, what would
someone be willing to pay for one of the older, unsealed copies of
FOT80's. I don't own one but know someone who does. I'm just curious if
the value of something like that just dropped $200-$250 from what it was
worth a couple months ago. I know in my eyes it did. I wouldn't pay more
than $50 for one now. Anyone else?

today at school and saw the little red slip saying that I have a package.
The CD looks and sounds great.  It was worth the wait.  My favorite song on

I've lost a lot of respect for Ivan's lyrics. One of the things I liked best
about Men Without Hats is that their lyrics were clean (ie. No profanity or
other obscenities). Now that I read the lyrics to some of the songs on Ivan's
new solo album, I noticed that he uses the name of the Lord in vain. I still
believe in God and to see one of my favorite artists profane His name saddens
me. I'll definitely think twice before buying his solo CD.
Why do people have to use profanity so much? It really disgusts me. I had to
leave a Carrot Top appearance just last week because it was so foul with
trashy language. I guess Ivan felt like it was needed to emphasize some point.
It makes me think he has just fallen into the same trap as many other people
do; that is, they feel that profanity adds increased meaning or value to their
point. In reality, it merely shows a lack of vocabulary skills and makes me
think their point is less worthwhile listening to.

Why do I get the distinct feeling that you are beginning to panic because
of the recent plummet of the value of your CD? Rarity = higher value. Why
buy yours when someone can get a better-sounding one for 1/100th of the

Now that I have ROY and FOT80s on CD, I have a new #1 on my want list.  I
would like to get a copy of the 3 CD set of Live and Rare tracks that JR

Can anyone burn a copy of them on CD for me?  I could also burn them myself
if someone would loan them to me.

Also, is the BBC Rock Hour live tracks included on that set?  I have vinyl
of the show (Flock of Seagulls on the flip side), and I am considering
burning a CD from it.

I think I've seen the Folk of The 80's CD listed on the Gemm website for
$75US.  Seems alot to pay when you can get both albums for about $20US!!

remember that there were not a lot of these cds made, they have the
original artwork etc., but most importantly they have bonus tracks that are
not on the recent reissue. I believe that the Rhythm Of Youth cd has 4
extra tracks that aren't on the reissue, and Folk Of The 80's (Part III)
has the extended remix of Where Do The Boys Go? .  I'm just saying that it
really comes down to what one person is willing to pay for a particular

Whoops!!  Did you have to mention that?  Even though it's listed on the
CD, the remix is not really on it. Somebody goofed somewhere along the
line and the CD is basically the same as the tape cassette version. (The
L.P. is missing some of Mother's Opinion....or is it that the CD and
tape have an extended version of Mother's Opinion? Whatever!)
:) And Mr. Jupiter Eight makes a good point about value for the price
(even sound quality). So I ask you this Rod, I have burned myself a CD
of ROY off of virgin vinyl that sounds absolutly perfect!! Printed
myself a cover with 600 dpi colour and all for under $9 CAN (and no fade
in for one of my favourite songs I Got The Message!!) Would you give up
your twofer for this??  How about the original CD release??

And my autographed PGTW doesn't enter into this discussion but I need to
brag about it occasionally. :)

While I don't support profanity just for the sake of profanity, I don't
believe that it has no place.  When speaking about Ivan and/or MWH
consider Sideways (if you are speaking also to blasphemy).  My view is
that needless profanity (and I know some will say all profanity is
needless) is a waste of time and is not artistic.  However, I don't
believe that all profanity represents a small vocabulary and lack of
creativity.  Some profanity is used in cases where there is no other word
to use.  It expresses a frustration so great that no matter what your
vocabulary there is no other word to cover it.  Now I have not read all
the lyrics for Ivan's new album so I cannot comment on the profanity in
this directly but I will urge people to consider what profanity really
expresses if used creatively.  I will also concede that this may be
difficult to do as profanity has become so common place in modern culture
that it seems to be an easy out.  Examine the context, however, and see if
the profanity is and easy out or expresses a greater frustration.  As an
example there is a song by Metallica called "The God That Failed".  Seems
rather profane but the story behind it tells of a family member of one of
the band memebers that was very ill and regardless of all the prayers
offered up in this persons behalf the person died.  If you have ever been
through anything like this you can understand the anger and frustration
even if you don't agree with it or it's outlet.  In such a case this
blasphemy is not an senseless, unjustified way to get attention and shock
value.  Rather it an honest anger channeled through a creative medium in
music.  Keep all this in mind before disregarding something just because
of profanity.

That's what I thought. There are many CD's that I own that I will not
part with for anything. Not that they are that valuable. But they are
sentemental for me personally and are priceless really. I think that was

Actually I have been through something like this and cannot be angry. My
son died about a year and a half ago. My wife spent a month in the
hospital and we spent three months visiting him there. He went through
surgery after surgery and finally died. Many were the prayers offered up
for my sons life...and he died nonetheless. Does this make me angry at
God? No. Unfortunately because of sin there is a time to live and a time
to die. Death came early for my son and I am lucky to have had 3 months
with him. But I can understand someone who doesn't trust or believe in a
God being angry when things go wrong. I understand their frustration
because there is nothing they can do and they realize their
insignificance in the scheme of things. It makes them angry and they need
to vent somewhat. Who am I to judge them for that? Let God be their
judge. It's obvious that Ivan struggles with these issues: "I may not
know what's right but I know this can't be it".

I appreciated many of the responses to my posting regarding profanity. Some
have mentioned other references to Deity in a couple of Men Without Hats
songs. Here's what I think of  them:

1.  Messiahs Die Young - I like this song a lot. I realized early that it may
reference Jesus Christ but he has pluralized Messiah. That tells me that it
may be a more general reference as in deliverer or liberator. Jesus also is
called the Savior but the Bible mentions saviours to come up on mount Zion so
I don't have a problem with this song.
2.  Kenbarbielove - from the Sideways CD. I never noticed the phrase about
Jesus Christ before it was mentioned as a response. Consider that song deleted
from my replay. I didn't really like that song anyways which probably explains
why I never listened to the words. Although this is not technically profanity,
it is personally offensive because of my religious beliefs, so I will choose
not to listen to it.
3.  The Spell - this is the song that caused me to write in the first place.
If you read the lyrics, you will see that it is really unwarranted. I'm no
poet or songwriter, but I know when someone is using profanity just get a
reaction and it seems to be working here. It just reeks of anger at nothing
that seems important.

That's a question I've been wanting to ask for some time now:
To what extend ARE Ivan and the band benefitting from Collection, the
ROY/Folk 2fer, and (maybe especially delicate) Greatest Hats? I'm asking
for material benefit, not the restrengthening popularity.

I think it was mentioned some time ago here that Men Without Hats lost all
the rights on their recordings (resp. never had them ;-), but I think it
wasn't absolutely clear so I thought I'd ask once again.

I also got my 2fer the other day.  It sounds great.  Thanks to all who
helped make this possible!

The most exciting part of having this for me is Folk...III.  I have a few
copies of this on vinyl, but haven't had access to a working record
player for literally years.  So these are songs I listened to maybe 8
years ago, when I was maybe 12, and am just now hearing them again.  So
it's like having new early Men Without Hats, except some of the songs are
familiar.

Additionally, when I did used to listen to this, I always listened to
side B.  So I can't believe I missed out on 'No Dancing'!  That song is
amazing.  I now want a music box that plays the opening bit.


Now on to the second, discussion-generating part.. I said up there 'new
early Men Without Hats', not just 'new work by Ivan'.  See, in my
perception, once we get to Pop Goes the World, image overtakes the
musical sense of things and interferes with everything.   "Folk of the
80's" (not pt III) really excited me and touched me because it all seemed
so simple and honest (see Security).  'No Dancing' has that feeling for
me now as well.

I like PGTW (the album), and I like some of the slower songs from The
Adventures.., but seeing the interviews and cheesy promotional lip-syncing
performances on the video really bothered me.  Call me cynical but I sort
of view it more as Ivan _following_ the 'socially conscious' or other
popular fad at the time, trying to cash in on that, rather than being
strong enough to make his own music and offer it for what it is, and
being a leader in that respect.

I like the first three works best, and I don't think it's just the
'synth' bit.  For me there's very much a mystery about the people behind
those works, and I can enjoy the music as it is and evaluate based on
just that.  It seems like coming up with and maintaining some shallow
image didn't interfere with the music on them.  They seem pretty pure and
simple.

I'm excited about the new Ivan album, but not _that_ excited.  Again
there's been a lot of work to put a pretty, exciting face on everything,
and it feels really 'false' to me.  All the stars and bright colors and
'cheesy child' motif stuff really turned me off.  I hope the music
underneath is strong and honest and isn't tuned to and permeated with
this new facade.  But I fear that will not be the case..

Anyway I probably could have articulated this better, but I was wondering
if anyone else had a bad taste in his/her mouth about this.  Thanks for
reading.

I have found that 'No Dancing' is best with headphones. The 'musicbox' sound
dancing and echoing from left to right inside my head defies description. This
must be done at the highest tolerable volume. Also...the way side A flows is

It is so weird that you say this, because I have always felt this way. In fact
I have felt (and keep in mind that this is only my own perception) that this
shows in the music. I hear the message (or 'got' the message) evolve from
Folk1 to ROY and to Folk3:

Folk1 is innocence and simplicity perfected. It is pure art and it shows that
there were no inhibitions. It is optimistic. It's just Modern(e) Dancing. Take
it or leave it.

ROY is also optimistic and I get a feeling of, "Hey, other people seem to like
this, too" from Ivan and the band.

Folk3 to me relays a message that things are starting to change. Lyrics like
"People try to tell me that my head is screwed on wrong" or "Where do the boys
go?" (where does the band go from here) and I think all the other songs
(except Eurotheme) carry a theme of transition, not necessarily at the will of
Ivan or the band. "I sing last/Not for tears" feels to me like the epitaph of
the "old" MWH. The lyrics and music reflect a sadness that they will no longer
be able to produce the type of music they wish to express themselves with, but
rather must conform to what someone else wants. This is slightly different
from your opinion that the band was the decision-making factor. I don't get
that from the feel of Folk3. It seems they are being 'forced' into the change.

So then come PGTW which is entirely different than the previous material.
There is something missing...It sounds familiar, but it just doesn't sound the
same. It feels now that they are puppets on some record company's executive's
hand.

This is why the release of the 2fer is so important to me. Because while there
is definitely listenable material in PGTW, 21st and even Sideways, those
albums do not touch my soul like Folk1, ROY and Folk3.

Yes, it finally arrived! Heart still pounding, I am now listening to The Great
Ones Remember.

Thank you to all involved and a very heartfelt thanks to Carl, Thomas and
Laura. It took a while, but I am so relieved to finally own these works of art
on flawless digital.

Okay, I can see where you're going with this.  I haven't listened to
Folk3 nearly as much as the rest.. maybe this will become more clear as I
do.  (Especially now that you've suggested this.. :) )

Interesting!  I never saw it this way but it makes a lot of sense, sort of
like 'Walk on Water' to some extent.  I always viewed it more along the
lines of 'I Know Their Name' - a happy but wistful rememberance of youth
in general.  It makes me think about how, when you're young (meaning, like
childhood, and early adolescence..), you can get together with your
friends and do the most seemingly pointless things and have a great time
doing it.  But when you get older, you find that's not the case anymore,
and you find yourself wondering, 'What happened to that?  Where do the
boys go?'

Hmm I can sort of sense this in some of the other songs too, like
'Unsatisfaction' "I may not know what's right, but I know this isn't
it"..... and is "I die.. I die.." the old Ivan going away?

I would rather have had MwH remain pretty small-time but continue to be
honest to themselves etc. than allow this changing or shaping to occur.
Obviously that's pretty selfish and under the circumstances, perhaps
conforming to another's ideas seemed tolerable at reward of greater
exposure, better opportunities, more money, etc.

One thing about the new Ivan album that bothers me is the way the number
"2" is used for "to" in the lyrics. Reminds me of Prince or something...

I wouldn't use 'contempt' to describe the later stuff, but I much prefer
FOTE-ROY-FOTE3, to the point where the OGLIO 2-fer is actually only a backup
copy for me...

Bill,

You have to remember that not everyone puts the same stock in the Christian
"God" that you do. Some people, myself included, look to other forms of
spirituality for types of guidance.

I use the "profanity" you're referring to several times daily, as do many
of my Christian friends who go to church regularly. And "trashy language"
has its place in the English language... in any language.

You have every right to be offended, but I'm betting there are more people out
there who won't bat an eye over the lyrics.

Actually I don't think Ivan meant anythign sacriligous by that title/song.
Of course understanding his lyrics are a little of a challenge, but I think
the song is about Ivan not wanting to be a huge superstar because they go
out of style pretty fast.  "I don't want to be a messaiah I just want to
have fun".  Which shows--Ivan wasn't very much into interviews and large tours.

What????
How could someone suggest that there is something missing from PGTW?
And THEN to say that they became record company puppets?  I think that
PGTW is one of the best produced albums I have ever come across, and
that it is Men Without Hats best (along with ROY).  I will admit that
"Moonbeam" and "Pop Goes the World" are typical pop fare, but the rest
of the album is fabulous.  Those who doubt it's power, program your CD
player to skip tracks 2 & 8, then judge for yourself.

Include me as one of the "Some people", Don.  I haven't commented on
this topic yet because I would rather not try to influence anyone in
their spirituality.  But this whole thread reminds me of the piles of
Beatles records that were burned after something John Lennon said.  Like
someone said on this list, Ivan is expressing frustration and nothing
else.  Have a little tolerance people!

As for the reduction of words into numbers and letters.  Ivan is doing
this for a reason which may not be immediately obvious to us.  But Ivan
is very intelligent and I'm sure he isn't making the new album because
he needs money or fame. The new song sounds like it was fun to make AND
IT SHOWS!!!

Well, if you talk about "Bigger than America", then, well, it is ...

... bigger than America! :-)

In fact this is the one CD which is currently in my Hot Rotation (3 CD
Changer in my computer), together with the 2for1 CD and (sic!)
Alisha's Attic.

I can recommend it to all synth-pop fans, you will have to survive the
first two (IMHO lame) tracks but you will be rewarded with definitely
classic tracks like the title track (Bigger than America), "Another
Big idea" or "Do I believe?"

But then again, I'm almost as long a H17 fan as I am a MwH fan...

I'm kind've surprised to hear so many place the pre-PGTW material on
that high a pedestal.  I will whole-heartedly agree that Adventures...
and Sideways aren't on a par with the rest, but I've always seen Pop as
the peaking of their art.  As if the previous efforts were a striving to
achieve some sort of musical realm, and the brief flirtation with true
epiphany was captured for a moment, and then lost.  Afterwards, it
sounds like reaching for something that isn't there anymore (re: All We
Do), and finally a last ditch attempt to find it in a crazy 180 degree
turn from everything they'd ever done before (re: Sideways).

Now don't get me wrong, I love everything they've done.  Period.

(Which reminds me:  I once recorded Freeways from 45 to cassette, and
accidentally left the speed on 33.  What I got was one of the neatest
songs I've ever heard.  Try it, and tell me what you think.)

But I digress.

There is extreme genius in ROY & FOTE I & III, but the level of sheer
art in Pop just blows me away.  The first time I heard Lose My Way I
almost cried.  Ditto for The End.  Am I alone in this?  Am I alone?
