Unforunately, I have to agree. This is tough isn't it? I mean we all
love MWH and we want to support anything that is associated with
them......but not this! Anything but this, this, (hold my nose)
Bio-Dumb! ;^@ I even like Sideways better than Dumb and you all know
how much I love that album! It was good for a laugh (the movie that is,
maybe the album too...hmmm, but I digress). Basically, I have the
feeling that the movie really cheapened Safety Dance. Still, it was
kind of exciting seeing MWH come alive again...

Just so I have it correct for the next issue of Lexicon, is this an Ivan release or Men

Date: 04 Mar 1997 08:14:55 -0800
Well, I went home early with a headcold yesterday, and spent some time just
watching videos.
One videotape I pulled out was the unbelievable MWH tape. And I noticed a
few things:
- In "Safety Dance", right before Ivan sings the chorus for the
first time, he walks up to a fence. It appears as if he trips
and falls into the fence.
- There's a woman in "Safety Dance" with red paint on her face who
walks around during the festival scene hitting people with a
red stick. I just hate her. Don't know why... she just aggravates
me.
- When I first saw "Safety Dance" in 1983, I fell into a mad crush
with the woman who dances with Ivan. Who is she?!?!
- The poor drummer... in the "I Like" video, all he gets to do is
hit a cart with a black stick.
- If Dr. Bruce Murphy hadn't told us, I never would have noticed that
Stefan was in a wheelchair in the "21st Century" video.
That's all. Just babbling...

Subject: Re: (hats) A Couple of things...
Date: 16 Mar 1997 01:34:55 -0500
I know you've probably gotten a million or so responses to your query about
the "other" MWH releases, but here is my 2 cents (Canadian 2 cents, of
course, which is worth something like $0.00000000000000003 in U.S. funds)..
"The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century"...
I didn't like this album when I first traded my Guns N' Roses
"Spaghetti Incident?" CD with a friend for it.. But after a
while, I felt sorry for him. He definitely got the worst end of that
deal! A lot of people on this list don't really like this album
as much as the first four, but I do. It may be totally different
from generic 80's synth-pop, but it is still, without any doubt, MWH!
~ All you need to do is read the lyric book for confirmation of this...
~~BA Songs like "In The 21st Century", "You & Me", "Everybody's Sellings
~A~~A Something" and "Here Come The 90s" belong up there with the MWH
Hall of Fame..
RATING: 8/10 (where Rhythm of Youth constitutes a 10)
"Sideways"
I have this on tape only, which is a major reason I have not listened
to it as much as I should have, but it is too tame to be called grunge
and too heavy (in parts) to be pop.. again, seems just right for MWH!
But, sadly, this album doesn't work for more than 2 or 3 songs..
the single "Sideways" is OK at best, lacking a memorable hook that
MWH fans know & love, "Fall Down Gently" is fun to listen to, with
a decent non-synth melody and humourous lyrics, as is "Everybody
Wants to Know", but the only song on this album that could have been
commercially viable (and maybe MIGHT have salvaged MWH in an age of
Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) is "In The Meadow", which may,
(providing you listen to any NEW music) remind you of Gin Blossoms,
Goo Goo Dolls and/or Hootie and the Blowfish. Nice guitar hook. But
not enough for a whole album..
RATING: 5/10
"Collection"
What can I say? Having "The Safety Dance" (I bet most people forgot
there is a "the" in front of it) AND "Where Do The Boys Go?" on ONE
CD is awesome (among many great others.. ) so thank god for Oglio
Records.. The only thing I'd change with this release is the fact
that the first beat of "Hey Men" is missing (which isn't THAT big
a deal) and that Extended versions of WDTBG and "I Got the Message"
are probably not listened to very often by owners (I may be VERY wrong
here, but I personally never listen to them). Also, a CD can hold
(as Metallica proved with "Load") over 79 minutes of music, so why
is this CD only 60 minutes long..? Missing from this disc are great
songs such as "The Great Ones Remember", "Unsatisfaction" and
"Freeways" (which is included on "Greatest Hats" from Aquarius.. one
wonders why they even bothered after Oglio's release) and the treble
is a bit higher than the bass, nothing a good equalizer can't fix..
But if you ARE a MWH fan, and you see this in a store, DON'T THINK
TWICE! Buy it!
RATING: 9/10
Well, that's it! my 2 (or 3) cents worth.. I wonder if anybody cares?!
BTW, if I ever get a CD-copier for my PC, I will print copies of the Men
Without Hats Interview Album for those who want it.. I found this in a
used record store a few months back, and it includes a Canadian
exclusive interview with Ivan.. Post-Pop Goes The World stuff, mainly, but
also about the origins of the band, etc.. on vinyl. Sounds perfect,
though. I copied it onto tape.. If anyone wnats it that way.. I'll post
another message about what is on it..
Kerim!

Subject: (hats) MWH Interview Album
Date: 16 Mar 1997 01:50:23 -0500
I have a vinyl 12" copy of the Men Without Hats Interview Album from 1988
recorded with Ivan and (interviewer) Martin Siberok of the Montreal Gazette.
I have copied it onto tape (sorry, but I refuse to send my LP of this
ANYWHERE) and if anyone has a CD copier for their PC or whatever and wants
to make CDs of it, I can copy it onto a high-fidelity tapeand send it to you
for editing.. here is the list of stuff discussed on the "album" from
actual LP itself..
SIDE A:
1) Their Comeback
2) After "Safety Dance"
3) Ivan's New Image/Ideas
4) Recording "Pop Goes The World"
5) Songwriting
6) Formation of MWH
7) The New Band
8) Tour Plans
Side B:
1) "Pop Goes The World" the Album
2) Ideas & Concepts
3) Commercial Endorsements
4) The Music Industry
5) Quebec
6) Future Plans
7) Musical Interests
As~ you may have guessed, this stuff is all post-Pop Goes The World.
One interesting tidbit from this interview is that the title song from
the album, "Pop Goes The World", was #1 on the Canadian charts, and in the
Top 20 in the U.S... also, "Walk On Water" was SUPPOSED to be the second
single (which would've been a REALLY good idea..) but the record company
decided on "Moonbeam" instead.. Bad move, I think.. "Moonbeam" would
probably work NOW, what with songs like "Lovefool" (Cardigans) doing so
well.. but the late 80s was not a "shiny happy love" tune type of era..
Oh well..
Kerim!

Does it have the extremely rare yellow cover with a no-hats logo? I
heard only one was ever produced!
It was woven from band members' hair and the cassette case was made of
an experimental harder-than-diamonds plastic. The tape itself has strips
of Ivan's DNA lining the magnetic strip, so that the true quality of his
voice is preserved, and it sounds as though he's in your car singing to
you (and part of him actually is!).
And it contains the Winnebago song and the MCA demos as well!
It that the cassette you're auctioning? I'll double the minimum starting
bid and open for TWO CENTS!!!

Greetings Millinery Afficianados,
[Lurk Mode OFF]
First off I should say that I really know nothing about MWH except the
Safety Dance single and an album which I bought whose name escapes me
but it has 21st C Safety Dance on it. I bought it thinking it might
be the original version but it isn't. The album was good enough to
persuade me that I might well want some more of this stuff. The only
other album I've seen here in Stuttgart (I think I noticed a mail
from somebody else in Stuttgart this morning - small world!) apart
from the one I've got is Pop Goes something or other which was
recommended to me by someone on another list.
Really what I want to do before I become a total groupie is to find
the Safety Dance either as a single or on an album (cd) if there is one.
I suspect this is an FAQ but I heard the track on the radio at the
weekend but have never seen it anywhere. Anyway, if anybody can
help me with the catalogue number I'd be very grateful.
TIA

We all seem to be in lurk mode as of late...
The Safety Dance can be found on Oglio's fantastic MWH Collection CD, on
Canada's clone called 'Greatest Hats', Oglio's new re-release of 'Rhythm of
Youth/Folk of the 80's Part III' or on an Austrian Maxi-Single (EAMS 2305-2).
I would recommend trying to find Collection or Greatest Hats since you are
'testing the water'. I think most will agree that while The Safety Dance is a
great song, MWH has better (IMHO) songs that are contained on these CDs.
Good luck on your quest.

AHEM!!!
(donning flame-retardant suit)
On the contrary. I would recommend the first two albums that just came
out on CD. Those two albums are the best ones Men Without Hats ever did!
Every song is a masterpiece! IMO, If those two albums had never been
made, Men Without Hats would never have built up the fan base to release
the following albums...and this list wouldn't exist today. Not that the
last few albums weren't good...I just think that from the first album
onwards, the albums were not as good (progressively worse)...
(removing flame-retardant suit)
By the way, how many on the list like(d) AFOSeagulls. I was just thinking
about the similarities between the bands today. AFOS used the Prophet-5
as their main synth (for the first few albums anyway) and so did MWH.
Also, besides Trans-X, does anyone know of any other bands that had a
similar French-Canadian synth-pop sound?

AFOS: I own a 'Best Of', but don't rate them high enough to buy the
individual albums. There's not much besides the hit singles . . .
Most of all, they don't have these in-depth lyrics.
Similar sounds: I don't know if it's 'French-Canadian synth-pop sound', it's
rather a German act, I suppose, but when listening to _Boytronic_ lately, I
thought that they sounded similar to MWH in some way. Same as for AFOS, the
lyrics are rather superficial, but the sound is the same time and maybe the
same machines, dunno. Boytronic is extremely danceable.
Their first album, 'The Working Model', has been rereleased on a Finnish(?)
label lately [sorry Carl, no deal for you ;-] and I also rate 'Love For Sale'
as highly recommendable. Though, opinions are devided on the second one and
it's been recorded by a complete different lineup.

Hey Rod!
I like A Flock Of Seagulls too! I remember hearing I Ran (and liking it)
long before I heard The Safety Dance (and liked it as well). The summer
of '82 in America was the start of all that fun stuff we now look back and
oops/ look back at and cherish from the 80s. It ended around the time the
Challenger blew up. I Ran and ABC's The Look Of Love were both from '82 and
as such were two of my favourites from that year - which says a lot because
back then I was a 60s hippie wannabe in love with the music of The Beatles,
Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix. There was a lot of ice to melt
but the Flock had what it took!
I just recently got AFOS' Greatest Hits CD and love it. "Telecommunication"
has been a favourite of mine for several years although I never heard it
until the early 90s when I got copies of some KROQ tapes from a friend with
California connections. The tapes were from the early-to-late 80s and by
way of them I was able to discover the true sound of 80s pop music and not
just what Casey Kasem was able to push on all of us!

Oh, their first two albums were great. "DNA", "Don't Ask Me", "Space Age
Love Song", "Man Made", "Transfer Affection", "Wishing" and "What am I
Supposed to Do" still get to me. Excellent stuff.
Trivia: "DNA" won the Grammy for best instrumental.

AFOS - play them all the time Rod - even saw them live here in the UK ages
ago... I've got some live tapes somewhere too! Didn't DNA get the best
dance instrumental out there in '82? I even remember John Foxx and the
early Human League, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Talk Talk, Kissing The Pink,
Boom Boom Room etc starting in '78 which got me going towards the synth
sound - seems sooooo long ago now doesn't it? Well it is actually - nearly
19 years :-(
Quite a few bands used the prophet 5 synth, including the Thompson Twins,
Thomas Dolby and others from that era. Infact quite a few bands today use
them still - they are a wee bit unstable but that adds to their certain
'charm' (if i may be so bold!).
As for the recent MWH releases - Oglio's collection and the rhythm of
youth/folk of the 80's are both excellent and should be recommended without
question...
better get back to playing with my new Mac :-)

Wow! I love reading about others who are as stuck in the early 80's as I
am. I would estimate that over 75% of my CD collection is devoted to that
era.
To help trigger some fond memories in others I offer the following sampling
of some of my favourite 80's bands. MWH, AFOS, Human League, Thompson
Twins, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, DEVO, ABC, Alphaville, Blancmange,
B52's, The Cars, Japan, Visage, Duran Duran, English Beat, Spoons, Boys
Brigade, China Crisis, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Images In Vogue,
Howard Jones, Martha and the Muffins, Gary Numan, Pete Shelley, Pete
Schilling, Men at Work, Naked Eyes, Re-Flex, New Order, OMD, Psychedelic
Furs, Split Enz, Strange Advance, Talk Talk, Tears For Fears, Ultravox,
XTC, Yaz, Erasure, General Public, Adam and the Ants......I think you get
the idea. One of the best sets of CD's I have found as far as 80's
compilations go is the Living In Oblivion series from EMI (although I still
haven't been able to find disc #6).
I still think my favourite tape of all time is the one I made with ROY on
side A and AFOS on side B. That one got practically destroyed from
overuse. AFOS was found on CD many years ago. Having ROY on CD will be
the culmination of a search that has lasted over 11? years (I think I got
my first CD player in 1986).
BTW, Much Music here in Canada is having another 80's Weekend on April 5
and 6. I know I'm going to take a lot of flack from my significant other
for spending the netire weekend glued to the tube!
Happy reminiscing! :-)

I agree...but I do like the first (3) albums not (2). However...after
that things went downhill fast. I saw them in 1988 and he had pretty long
hair and was balding pretty badly. His band had about 7 guys...they
played in a little bar in Kalamazoo, Michigan...barely enough room for
the band let alone people (I'm not kidding either - about 20 feet out on
either side of the setup which was on a dance floor. Needless to say...I
was very disappointed. Gone were the analog synths. Digital was in. They
did some very poor covers of early tunes. I kind of remember thinking at
the time that the band was down to one lone seagull, flapping around on
the beach trying to fly again but his wings were clipped. Gone were the
soaring synthpop days of yesteryear. :)
But recently I went out on a limb and bought the album that they released
in 1995 (and again in 1996). After multiple listens I'm actually liking
it - there's some digital emulation of the Prophet-5 going on that sounds
like the old stuff. His songwriting hasn't really changed much, there's
just a different guitar sound...Reynold's was definitely better though. I
heard he's playing sax in a travelling jazz band now. Oh well...
They are still touring pretty much

Believe it or not...I've never seen that video. But from what you are
saying, I can make a gues at what he was playing because I own a Remote
Prophet keyboard which basically hooks up to a Prophet-5 with a 40 foot
cable so you can trigger the notes from a distance. It looks alot like my
monophonic SH-101 too and you can play chords with it. I'd make a wild
guess and say that was the puppy!

Knowing that there are others who share my adoration for 80's music may not
convince my deriders that I am in fact sane, but it is of great comfort to me
to know that you are all out there :)
Before I discovered this email list (a couple years ago), I compiled a page
listing my favorite music (and movies, but that's not important here). This
was partly because I am retentive and like making lists, but partly because I
was hoping the page would be a beacon to other 80's fans, especially fans of
rare stuff.
(If curious, check out http://web.mit.edu/schacht/www/music.html - there are
many more bands I should add but haven't yet. BTW, Papa Funk's cheesy 80's
page is great. I link to it on my page, but the URL is:
http://web.mit.edu/tobye/www/cheezy80s.html if you want to go direct. No
comments on MIT nerds liking nerdy bands, please :)
Getting ROY/Folk3 on CD has been my #1 goal as an 80's collector for many
years. Thanks to Carl, Thomas, and Laura, I will be able to fulfill this, and
move on to other rare 80's stuff. I am particularly interested in Canadian
80's bands: Rational Youth, Spoons, Strange Advance, Images in Vogue, Blue
Peter, The Tenants, Vicious Pink, and Pukka Orchestra. RY are are planning
re-releases of their albums "Heredity" and "Cold War Nightlife" - check out
their web page and send in your vote! - and they, Spoons, SA, and IIV released
collection CDs in the last year or two. Other than this I don't hold out much
hope for Canadian 80's material on CD. I'm sure that most of these bands never
released on CD originally, and the demand is probably not there for a
re-release. If anyone knows anything about the availability of these bands on
CD, or at least shares my quest for this stuff, I'd love to hear from them.

Hi,
Couldn't let this strand go by with out interjecting a) my thoughts and b) a shameless
plug.
a) I think that the 80's were the last great time of real pop music, where you could
sound fun, have a melody and be dancable and still be "hip". I wonder if bands like
KTP, Blow Monkeys, or even the Human League would have any a;ternative cache in todays
music. Probably not.
I liked music form the 80's enough to devote some of my time (between work and Grad
school) to putting together a newsletter about bands and musci from the 80s. (WARNING:
SHamless plug coming!). The result is Lexicon, now about to print it's third issue.
THis issue I got the chance to interview Black ("It's a wonderful Life") and Thomas
Dolby. I also put together discographies from the Bugles, Mari Wilson and Frazier
Chorus. Also, I 've constructed the HEaven 17/Human League matrix, which shows their
connection (ala 6 degrees from Kevin Bacon) to the Beatles, Donna Summer and Billy Idol
(among others).
If you want a free copy you can send an SASE with two 32 cent US stamps to :Lexicon PO
Box 1734, WHeaton, MD 20915. Overseas it costs me three IRCS to mail it out, Canada,
not as sure, better stick an extra stamp on it or send me 2 IRCs.
Sorry for the long post. Thanks -Dave

I guess '88 wasn't such a bad year for me after all!
Not only did MWH come to my hometown for a show to promote "Pop Goes the World",
but AFOS also came to a small dive bar called "Windjammers". Yes, I too saw
them on that "tour"! I even have a dollar bill around here with Mike Score's
autograph on it. (It was the only paper I had available at the time!)
You wouldn't believe how many times since then I've accidently found a dollar
bill lying around only to then find it's the one I can't spend! Fie!
It is true that Mike's hair was very long, stringy and hanging off the back
of his head only. Of course, I have read his balding was the reason he did
his hair the way he did it in the early days anyway - it was all just a
"cover up"!!

Gone:
The Cars, Devo*, Men At Work*, Split Enz*, Yaz*
* - Broke up and formed new projects
Hiatus (future projects not impossible):
Men Without Hats
Active:
Adam Ant, B-52's, China Crisis, Depeche Mode, Thomas Dolby, Duran Duran,
Erasure, A Flock of Seagulls, Colin Hay (of Men At Work), Human League,
Howard Jones, Gary Numan, Tears For Fears
Those are all that I'm sure about, but I'll add some of my own. Still
active are A-ha, Heaven 17, They Might be Giants and Yello.
I have video collections of Depeche Mode, Erasure, Talk Talk and Yello,

This is not, and never has been, a "Men Without Hats IMPORTANT INFORMATION
ONLY" list -- it's a general discussion list for Men Without Hats fans. As
such, six messages a day is hardly excessive -- some of the musical mailing
lists I'm on get ten times that many or more.

i my opinion, the greatest collection of 80's music ever:
THE NUMBER 1 EIGHTIES ALBUM from Polygram (UK)
it is an import that contains 2 discs with over 40 tracks.
there is the "mainstream" stuff like:
U2, David Bowie, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran.
Alternitive stuff like:
Depeche, Erasure, Yazoo, Simple Minds...
And rare stuff like:
Kaftwerk, The Jam, Nik Kershaw
It is the best mix of these 3 catagories that i have every found, and i have

Heaven 17! But the European band though. Not the one we all know. Did that

While I am here, sometime last year there was a discussion about The Human

A really neat Web site is http://www.firefly.com. FireFly asks you to
rate your favorite groups, and then recommends music you might like
based on the groups you rated. It uses its database of a million or so
people's music tastes, and aligns you with like-minded listeners. So if
you tell it you like Men Without Hats, A Flock of Seagulls, Gary Numan,
etc., it will look at the other people who like those groups, and tell
you that most of the people who like them also like ABC or whoever.
It's a great way to find out about new music.

All,
I'm interested in purchasing the ROY/Folk CD..I'm a HUGE MWH fan, and
have seen them play here in the Wash. D.C. area twice in the late 80's.
My Father airbrushed thier logo on a nice white piece of posterboard,
and I had all of the band memebers sign it...Ivan's message was SO
cool...I'm going to get it scanned in, and put it on line for all to
see!
Any info would be appreciated...Does Ivan receive E-mail??
Thanks,

Me! At least their first 3 (and maybe 4th) albums, which I have managed to
find on CD (to replace my scratchy records and worn tapes). Their recent
offerings have been rather dismal, as have their live shows. I saw them
(actually Mike Score with a bunch of lousy[with the exception of a fantastic
bass player] back up musicians) in 1989. Score looked like he'd been through
a meat grinder. Unfortunately I could tell similar stories about many of my
favorite '80's bands. Growing up in a small town in Michigan I almost never
got to go to big city to see the great bands. I usually saw these bands after
reunion tours or such, usually with dissapointing results (ie. Missing
Persons, The Knack, Killing Joke, The Vibrators, etc.). Fortunately a couple
of the old bands, such as the Buzzcocks and the Dickies, still put on great
shows.
But enough of that. For those of you who like synth bands besides just MWH, I
recommend a new one, The Pulsars. A Chicago band, they're actually more on
the Cars side, but still very good. Also, I hear ABC has a good new album
out, but I haven't heard it yet.

Y'know, this is shaping up to be a good year musically. Not only are there
new albums by Ivan, ABC, Erasure, and others, but I'll finally have Folk of
the "80's on CD (already have ROY) thanks to Carl , Thomas, and Laura, AND a
few days ago I finally found an album I'd been looking for for 13 years,
SSQ's "Playback". Anyone else know of any other new or releases that those of
us who like MWH might also like?

Someone had mentioned trying to get a hold of the ROY/FOTE CD. I am
also interested. I missed the boat on the last one, but now I REALLY
want it. Maybe if enough people who missed out the last time, and want
it now get together, it can happen again???

When I saw MWH play here in Tulsa in '88, "Seconds" was a song in their set.
Unfortunately, I think I was the only one in the crowd who knew the words.
Then again, this is Tulsa.

Hello Hatterz,
I was in a used record store today and to my surprise found the EP of "Folk
Of The 80s"! It was seling for $20 which I think is a stupidly high price
since the sleeve was ripped big time (the glue came off) and the plastic
sleeve was too large for the record jacket!
Anyway, I thought it was cool to finally see what the ep looks like. All
white with the logo in the front. On the back it had black writing and "A
Men Without Hats Production" at the bottom. I would have bought it in that
condition but not for $20. At least I could have fixed it up after.

I'm so sorry but I desagree completly of the conclusion above, I don't
know about Porto Alegre, but here in S=E3o Paulo everybody who knows MWH
categorize them as Technopop or even New Wave, mainly for Safety Dance
hit, the only one hit on Brazilian radios at the 80's. This is the first
time I mail to this mailing list, 'till this moment I was only reading
and getting the news, but now there were no other way, here in S=E3o Paul=
o
MWH is not and was never a Surf Music Band, here they has been for
everyone who knows them Technopop and New Wave, remembering that only
the two first albuns was available for Brazilian fans in the 80's, and
after some alternative nightclubs in S=E3o Paulo played a lot of 21st
Century...
So Brazil is almost a continent, so there many differences between
states and cities. In Porto Alegre is Surf Music, in S=E3o Paulo is
Technopop, and elses...
I've lost my shyness and so I am. The first message in this list, and
I'd like to invite you everybody on the mailing to know my 80's lyrics

Autobahn Project is more than a page, it's a project which presents all
80's songs to a limited underground nightclubs in Brazil, it's a not
periodic Project, it worked as periodic for two years, but in Brazil
it's very difficult to open places where you can listen to Alternative
songs. Here we had 5 undergrounds at 1991 to 1994, but nowwe have only
two at S=E3o Paulo, so Autobahn Project is now only a page and a Radio
program based on technopop, goth, Kraftwerk, Trisomie 21, Men Without
