I think the reason the first two albums are my favorites is because they
used the raw Prophet-5 instruments (for those with the video its the
wooden looking synths - three of them used in the concert). That synth
has a quality about it that make the songs sound so....synth poppy...And
Men Without Hats wrote great synthpop on the first two albums. The next
two albums used alot of digital stuff and sampled voices...then came the
grunge on the last one. As someone who prefers the old analog sound over
digital or even guitar, I feel that the first two albums are best just
because of the instruments they used. The sound is so unique and brash
and bubbly. But when you think about it, the songs really remained quite
the same from album to album but the band used different instruments to
songwrite with.
But I agree with you...notice how quiet the list got once everyone
received the video and 3CD set? Makes me wonder what will happen too once
the 2-fer is out.

That synth sound sure feels nice on the ears! But its more than just the
fact that its synth. These albums feel like they were created by a
playful and enthusiastic Ivan. (ie. they are very clever albums). You're
right though, there are two kinds of synth but I think its not quite
"analog vs sampler". For example, I easily created that cheezy synth on
my Roland S-10 by looping single pulses of just about any sample. This
created a square wave which is in fact the basis of those analog
synths. The first 2 or 3 albums of MWH used these simpler waveforms
while PGTW used more complex waveforms. Acoustic instruments have
infinitely complex waveforms (which, of coarse, end up being sampled
waveforms when on a CD).
My heart has always been with that wonderful "cheezy" synth and if it
came right down to a decision between the first 3 MWH albums and PGTW
I'd have to go with the first 3 "cheezy" ones. But PGTW was more
adventurous, had a great variety of sounds (that's an understatement!)
and put together with meticulous attention to detail and the art of
music.

I noticed this too! I'll admit, when I got the video I had the sense of
being content. (Like my long thirst for MWH and been quenched.) Now, I
NEED MORE!!!! Hurry up IVAN!

Yeah...I believe it was one of the first samplers...Emulator II or

The later stuff does have some analogish sounds on it

The video for 21st Century shows a guy playing a little Korg semi-modular

I was very delighted by Don2's enthusiastic response to PGTW. I too share
many of his feelings. Songs like "The End of the World" and "Walk on Water"
make me reflective and I wonder if maybe all of my friends ever will be
together again. All of the songs make so much sense. They're so easy to
relate to and they make you feel good about life and love. 21st Century also
has songs like that like "All We Do" and "You and Me", not to mention
"Underneath the Rainbow", my favorite song in the entire world. And I think
they're cover version of ABBA's SOS is absolutely awesome. Well, I guess
that's enough gushing over MWH today. Just remember, we'll all meet again at
the end of the world.

The reason I even play in a band is because of analog machines ( and Ivan
was a HUGE influence)-- We even lug out our JX3p to some shows (the Jupiter
6's/8's weigh too much!)
Im glad someone shares my views on the love/hate relationship of Digital vs

I cannot wait for the ROY CD (any clarification on if we'll be able to get it

about 130dB again. Anybody interested in the ROY vinyl?? It's in good shape,
but I have never owned a turntable, and don't see any reason to start. E-me

I am still making stereo HiFi VHS (NTSC only!) copies of the MWH videotape
for those of you interested in obtaining a copy and unfortunate enough not
to be able to get one of the originals. You need simply to post me a private
email to obtain my mailing address so that you can know where to send your
money and stuff in the first place. I ask that you mail to me some form of
mailer suitable for mailing a videotape, along with the correct amount of
postage and US$3.00 to cover my cost for the blank tape I'll need to complete
the task. If you live outside of the US, it would probably be wise to send
the amount needed for postage in monetary form rather than in stamp form.
I also am offering dubs of the three MWH compact discs made by J.R. Bookwalter
for the same price . I can only copy them to VHS HiFi videocassettes, however, therefore the
same rules apply for this as for the MWH videotape offer described above.

Whoops...let me rephrase that: "...notice how quiet the list got once the
3CD set and video were released". The only real talk thats gone on since
is by those who were not able to get the 3CD set asking how they could
now get it - my point being - there is a certain amount of hype about MWH
on this list centered around the fact that most of their stuff is still
unavailable to the masses on CD. Once everything is available, will there
be the same volume of discussion? I kind of doubt it. There is little
talk about their first two albums as is and they are readily available on
vinyl/cassette. I don't think the release of those two albums is going to
stir up too much talk. In fact, a lot of people may end up leaving the
list shortly afterwards once they've gotten "all" of the MWH stuff ever
available. That's kind of why the missing demos is good to have missing.
There's always something more that you don't have... As much as I liked
the MWH video collection, I had only seen one of the videos before
(Safety Dance) and was very anxious to see the whole thing. There was a
certain completeness after having watched the whole video but there was
also a certain feeling of disappointment...a feeling of - man they were
pretty cheesy weren't they - or, hmmm, they were great, but their videos
were not "that" great...or, Is that it? Is this what I've been waiting
for for all of these years? My bubble sort of burst I guess. Just my
personal feelings - I still like the first two albums more than any other
and they are two of my all-time-favorite synthpop albums so I'm sure once
they are available I'll be here talking about them...

What are we? Stamp collectors!! I'm on this list because I want to
discuss the works of MWH. I firmly believe that MWH is very insightful
and unique among a world of copycats and mass produced music. In PGTW,
Ivan avoided being "macho" and "cool". Any other band would consider
this suicide! My point is that MWH took us where no band has gone before
and I've enjoyed the trip from the very beginning! Thank you, Ivan.

Personal, I would really like to discuss ROY a little bit. Why did Ivan
write "Ideas For Walls"? It seems like it's from the point of view of
an architech but why does he prefer that the nightlife be called the
"right life"? What is he standing on the inside/outside of? This song
has always had me somewhat puzzled. But I doubt that Ivan wrote the song
just to puzzle us. Any ideas out there?

I think Ivan puts it best himself in the song:
"Is everybody confused?" (No.)
"I'm making no sense at all."
though I'm not sure who is supposed to be responding "no" to that question.

These lines get me thinking that maybe this architech is really only the
designer of a padded cell! The protagonist is definately not too
confident in what he's saying. I wonder if the phrase "banging your
head against a wall" has anything to do with this song?
If this line of reasoning is correct then why does Ivan want us to think
about this? Actually, come to think of it, "The Great Ones Remember" and
"Ban the Game" also seem to be describing an "uncertainty" in the
"speaker". (I really don't want to say "Ivan" because a good writer can
obviously act out a role for the purpose of the song.)

I thought I had to comment on the recent poster who said `is that it?`
after watching the video collection.
I have watched them several times since receiving my copy and have yet to
get sick of them. What should be taken into account is that at the time
of the earliest video`s, the industry was still very new. I can`t think of
many video`s released around that era that would look that good these days.
Vienna by Ultravox is one of the few that sticks out as not looking dated.
However, saying that, In the 21st... is an outstanding video and probably
MWH`s finest. Still, I like them all, even Where Do The Boys Go? which
seems to consist of a load of snowmen walking round a giant orange golf
ball :-) Great music too.

I must have missed this... someone wasn't HAPPY with the video
collection? Man, I watched it four times - all the way through, mind
you - the first day I had it. Seeing Ivan and the dwarf minstrel
bounding through the grass at the beginning of "Safety Dance" blasted me

Ivan, if *you're* reading: I wasn't dissatisfied. Hell, the group could've
been filmed with a Super 8 camera and I would've been ecstatic!

love everything about it, from the opening bit with the text printed on
the screen and the blinking triangle cursor, to the giant orange ball, to
the weird camera attachment to Ivan, to the guy running around in circles
with his hand over his ear at the start, to the herd of bonhommes. I should
say more about that last bit. It's actually a bit scary in a surreal
way, all these bonhommes smiling and waving on the exterior, but slowly
circling round the guy, closing in, closing in, so many of them, smiling
and waving, seemingly with good intentions but surrounding the guy and
bringing him down. Also it's great at the end after one of the "WDTBG"'s
when Ivan gives this great big nodding smile.
And yes great music on that one. Actually I had managed to overlook
WDTBG somehow all that time I had Folk..III on vinyl.. it wasn't until
the Collection CD that I got hooked on it. It is pretty catchy, you have
to admit. I made an arrangement (well, more like.. transcription? :) )
of it for the a capella group I sing with here at the university, and
they all love it. I realize now that I should have done "I Know Their
Name" instead - that song has always meant a lot more to me, but it's too
similar to WDTBG to do both now.
I also love the Pop Goes the World video - it has an almost Japanese
cheesiness to it. With all of Ivan's silly grins and facial expressions,
and the gratuitous words appearing on the screen to indicate the actions
going on ('pop!', 'skrang', and my favourite.. when Ivan looks puzzled by
the bubbles floating around at the beginning and a little ? appears next
to his head).. and have you ever actually looked at the "baby's" hands?
What a riot! And of course "Jenny" with the bass, just rocking it back
and forth and looking pretty. We always joke that when near the end she
gets put up on the pedestal by Ivan, that it was really the case that
Ivan was showing the model where to go ("ok now come stand over here for
a while"), because all she knew how to do was rock the bass back and forth..
I guess Moonbeam is good too, for many of the same reasons as PGTW (I
think it's a little unnecessary that the moonbeam illuminates his groin in
a couple of those shots though, and the zoom-ins on "Jenny"'s crotch), but
it gets big-time points taken off for the annoying remix that accompanies
it. I like when he jumps onto the moonbeam and starts climbing, but in
the next shot he's back at the same place. And why he starts signalling
semaphores with the planet I may never know :)
Just had to comment on the WDTBG?...

Asmuch of a listener of MWH's Ive been over the years... rather then defend
the videos... i would have to agree with Rod... they WERE Very chessy
(uh... nice house... no furniture ) ; grin
It was the way Ivan had with writing an amazing (and as he puts it -
disposable) pop song.
The way his vocal and production skills advanced from the first 16 track Ep
, right up til the brilliantly crafted "PGTW". (I LOVE the EP because it
captured a mood, an expression for that specific moment in time... and I
love PGTW for its multi-layered samples/ vocal harmonies and its slick and
OVER PRODUCED sound. ( Paul Northfield RULES !)
For these reasons alone... I look forward to future Ivan recordings (
analog / digital / acoustic---- whatever !)
As for the videos... I never look for videos with huge PLOTS or THEMES ( at
least when they come from the early / mid - eighties !!!)
They are what they are !
As for bootlegs / live recordings,,, thats a whole other story.... ( ! )
when are we going to find some PGTW / Sideways live stuff ???
(Ivan does an amazing cover of " Money Changes Everything " ( on the
Sideways tour 1991) and the most twisted guitar oriented version of PGTW -
)

Hi Hilary!
Another "person of estrogen" checking in. There are a couple of us,
but just like in school, it's mostly guys that pipe up. Welcome
aboard!
Hi Everyone!!
Ohmigosh! I have a spare 20 seconds! What a concept. I better
type fast.
CDs: Great, love them!! Am making several people at work jealous by
listening to them on my computer - the 90s version of whistle while
you work, I guess. I *LOVE* Freeways - perfectly captures the mood
of driving alone at night (particularly when Cocoa and I drove to a
dog show in a tornado!).
Video: Cheezy? Of course - that's why we love 'em. It was great to
see the videos I'd never seen before - I only had SD and IL on video
before. Moonbeam is hysterical! *Sigh* Was Ivan really that young?
Then how young was I? The live show was great, too. I had seen them
live (live live, not live on video) waaaaay back on the ROY tour
(boy, do I feel old! who was it that was 7 when PGTW came out?
Thanks, kiddo!), and they really put on a super show.
Maybe this will stir things up: What song, by any group or artist,
would you like to hear Ivan et al. cover? MWH did a bang-up job with
SOS, I think, but I wasn't that crazy about I am the Walrus (I didn't
like it when the Beatles did it, either, though).
My fantasy album would have Ivan covering ... I'm a Believer by the
Monkees. But Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly would be fun, too. That would
give Ivan a better chance to do his yip-thing. ;-)
CUL8R!

Oh, Hillary!!
Just a few minutes before I read your mail I noticed that the question "Will
we all meet again at the end of the world?" had been haunting me for some time
now (listening to PGTW all through the last days). Same as you, I imagined it
wonderful to meet so many people again. And yes, I only thought of the people
I'd love to meet ("... they make you feel good about life ...") resp. felt the
wish to meet those people who weren't quite my friends as well, and make
friends with them then.
Btw, does this line make anyone else think of the 'restaurant at the end of the
universe' (Douglas Adams) ... ? ;-)

Y'know, it's funny, but through this mailing list I've "met" (for want of
a better word) the only female Hats fans I know. And the only male fan I
knew - my brother - ditched the entire techno scene soon after he bought
"Rhythm Of Youth" because someone told him it was all too "gay". (When I
questioned him about buying the album and what that meant about his sexuality,
he just told me to "SHUT UP!". TouchΘ.) I've pretty much been a lone wolf for
the last 14 years when it came to liking MWH. Throughout my long and tortured
life, my choice in music has been the biggest target exploited by people
looking to rag on me.
Please tell me if anything like this has ever happened to you. Right when I
got the Oglio Records "Collection", the woman I was living with at the time
(note that I said "at the time") had invited her sister to stay with us for
a few days. I was listening to the CD while they were cooking, and the sister
called out, "What is THAT?" And my girlfriend replied, "It's MEN WITHOUT HATS.
Isn't it CRAP? HAHAHAHA!" And so they both proceeded to berate me and the
Hats for a good fifteen minutes. Let me tell you, I was really hurt. From her
obnoxious egotistical trendy sister, I expected it... but from someone I
was in love with?!?!? POW. Caught me right in the gut.
So, to come back to my point before I have people all over the world crying
and wiping their eyes, I think MWH is a very special band, one of those
rare groups that couldn't and wouldn't be categorized and nailed down into
a general musical "style". What they were trying to do went over the
general music publics' collective heads... but there were some that actually
got it, that felt the call and got hooked. I'm one, Hillary's one, Tom is
one, J.R. is one... everyone reading these words is a member of a very
exclusive club.
This mailing list has proven to me that I'm not *completely* alone in the
world. Apart from my friends and my cats, the music that moves me is the
most important thing in my life. It keeps me going when there doesn't seem
to be any hope, or any point in continuing. Knowing that somewhere out there
Hillary is listening to "Walk On Water" and feeling that same sense of...
of whatever it is Ivan put into his music (I don't know what it is, but
it sure as hell feels good!)... knowing that I'm not the only one that
feels that way about MWH is comforting. It's reassuring, in its own way.
I thank everyone who is on this list, and others we have yet to meet, for
helping keep MWH from disappearing forever. With the 2-on-1 about to
be released, and rumors of a brand-new album from Ivan floating around,
I'd say our wearing out of tapes and LPs, and hopes for a return haven't been
in vain. Through the list, I've got some new "friends". And we actually
have a common interest... one that matters a great deal to me.
Thus endeth the sermon. Sorry to get so wordy, but I'm completely and utterly
depressed at the moment for various reasons, and I just felt like doing
some explaining.
"...We'll laugh at all the silly things
That we've both said and done
And step into forever
On the bright side of the sun..."

Well...what "I" actually said was "... As much as I liked the MWH video
collection, I had only seen one of the videos before (Safety Dance) and
was very anxious to see the whole thing. There was a certain completeness
after having watched the whole video but there was also a certain feeling
of disappointment...a feeling of - man they were pretty cheesy weren't
they - or, hmmm, they were great, but their videos were not "that"
great...or, Is that it? Is this what I've been waiting for for all of
these years? My bubble sort of burst I guess. Just my personal
feelings..."
What I actually meant by all this is that, yes, they were good videos
compared to other 80's videos...but not quite up to "great" status...So
I'm a perfectionist and expect alot from bands...that's just me. That's
what drives me in my own musical endeavors (endeavours). There's always a
certain sense of mystique about a band until you actually see what they
look like...then you go...man, isn't that Elvis guy just
really....cheesy? What were they thinking? I know people that didn't like
MWH based on the fact that they looked kind of stupid in their videos.
Many of these people think that MWH are a cheesy sounding band...I don't.
I like the kind of simple pop songs that MWH, AFOS (A Flock of Seagulls),
Trans-X, and others created during the 80's...I love synth-pop. But I had
"great" expectations before I got the videos and I was on a Moonbeam
until the whole video was over...then I came sliding down. It was over!
I'd seen what I'd been waiting to see and thought I'd never see for the
past 10 years or so....all in one night. My 'is that it?' was more of a
letdown in the sense of "the search is over and I've seen it all" instead
of "that was pretty boring". Many of the videos were hilarious and the
21st Century video was 'Great' with a capital G. A great big H for the
Hall...

What groups could get away with remaking MWH songs and what songs could they
remake.
Oh, I would like to hear MWH do some more Beatles cover (I've never

Howdy all you hatters!
Up to now, 31 people have shown their interest in getting the ROY/FOT80's
2for1 CD from me, even though I made you quite anxiuos about what it might
cost. (You'll see that I was wrong ;-)
In particulary, there will be no necessity to undergo any trouble about
'shipment points' in the US. I found a way to ship to you directly from
Germany at very reasonable prices.
Everybody who has stated his interest for this CD should have received a
confirmation from me a few days ago. If someone hasn't, please contact me.
Here are the expected costs in detail, according to the current standings -
Hope it's not too complicated (but I'm afraid it is...) ($ means USD):
1.) Disc price
- Negotiations with Carl Oglio are still going on. The disc is expected to
sell for $15.98, just like other 2for1's from Oglio Records. Yet, Carl has
offered to grant a discount for us hatters, but cannot give any details
because his calculations are not yet finished. Did I hit the point, Carl?
- I found some record shops that basically offered to grant a discount if I
buy a bunch of discs at once. On the other hand, I didn't see much point in
contacting any wholesale dealers yet, because the release details of the
disc are still unknown. Though, for obvious reasons, from the point of
logic, one would expect that Carl's offer should be the best anyway.
(hint, hint :-)
Unfortunately, currency conversion will cost another 7% of disc price. It's
simply because one dollar that I send to Carl will cost me more DM than I will
get for one dollar you hatters will send to me. As I'm not making any profit
by this whole transaction, I don't want to make losses as well.
Things might change, though, depending of the method of payment used. Also,
I'd be glad about any other suggestions at this point. I don't like it myself.
2.) Postage
Lucky enough, I found out that the German mail service grants considerable
discounts on overseas shipments under certain conditions.
Shipping 31 packages via air mail would cost $6.70 each package.
Due to extremely complicated details of postage rates here in Germany, with
increasing number of packages the price per unit will then continously
decrease down to $5.2 each unit at a quantity of 50 packages. For more than
50 packages the price per package will stay the same (unless I send 5000
packages ;-).
Shipping via surface mail (which I can do individually if someone wishes) will
save $2.40, as well as shipping to European locations.
Postage may become less if the actual packages will be lighter than I assumed
for the above calculation (they won't weight more). Before time for payment
has come I will weight a sample and we'll see.
3.) Packaging
To be shipped at the above prices, all packages have to be IDENTICAL. I would
have made freebie boxes myself, but they just won't accept it. :-(
I received a sample of the boxes I will use today; they will be about $0.50
each.
4.) Money transfer
Sending the money to Carl will cost me fixed $21 (remember, I'll have to send
$480 or even more).
***Summary***
31 discs 50 discs
discs: $17.10 - X $17.10 - X
postage (air) $ 6.70 $ 5.20
packaging $ 0.50 $ 0.50
money transfer $ 0.67 $ 0.42
---------- ----------
total $24.97 - X $23.22 - X
(whereby X is Carl's generous discount multiplied with 1.07)
This price may change depending on the final list price of the discs.
The discs may become cheaper depending on:
method of payment (maybe)
weight of packages
shipping via surface mail (saves $2.40, individual)
cost of packaging
This is all I can say at this point. I hope everybody feels 'well-informed'!
I think the offer is o.k. Please consider that the initial list price of the
discs is already $16 due to the fact that it's a twofer.
Anyone who feels that (s)he'd also want a copy at this pice, feel free to
contact me. Anyone of the 31 people who feels it's too expensive please do as
well.
Lots of greetings,
Thomas

And I reply...
It's the ABBA one. On 21C, if you have it. It's a pretty good
cover, imho. Some might think Ivan's voice is too deep for the
song, but I Like it. ;-)
Then, lshar1766 said ...

If he were to do more Beatles, how about While My Guitar Gently
Weeps? I think that would suit Ivan's vocal range. Plus, if he's
really returning to synth (thank goodness!), this would also be
ironic. ;-) (I've just been doing English and reading tests - I'll
try to write something onomatopoeic soon).
For a great yip-opportunity (yipportunity?), maybe Hello Goodbye?
Hey, isn't YIP onomatopoeic?
Off to do Algebra 1!

I agree with Laura on both counts. The MWH "SOS" is great, and I would
even say superior to the original. It is very well produced, retains the
charm of the original, yet has many little added flourishes. (Hmm, kinda
like the Star Wars re-release... :-)
Also, "Hello Goodbye" would be a perfect Beatles song for MWH to do. I
can see it done in that PGtW/21C style. It's upbeat and has a lot of loud
interjections, kind of like "Jenny Wore Black," "Everybody's Selling
Something," or even "Ideas for Walls." Also, there is a good blend of
piano, bass, guitar, and orchestra; the latter could be turned into
that signature Hats synth. I'm a big Beatles fan, and am glad to know
they were one of Ivan's influences.
Hatlessly yours,
C.Frey
"Is everybody confused?" "NO!!!"
"Jenny wore black, and Jenny wore white-" "W H I T E !!!"
"We're coming out in S - T - E - R - E - O - O - O ! ! !"
"You say yes-" ("I say yes!")
"I say no-" ("But I may mean no")
"You say stop-" ("I can stay")
"and I say go-go-go!" ("till it's time to go!")

Nope, there are several of us. But for a band no longer together, after

Especially for those of us who really just like the first few albums.

I put off ordering the Greatest Hats cd for awhile and was wondering if
anyone had the phone number for (I believe) HMV in Canada that can mail order
it. I know it was listed on the list sometime back, but I must have erased

I'd appreciate the number and if anyone ordered from there without a problem,

The number is 1-800-567-8468 (which I pulled off of Tom's email from
like October 18th). I ordered GH from there, and it arrived in less
than a week! They were very nice, and I appreciated that they were

They also played In Toronto (summer 83) at Ontario Place (to about 8 ,000
people)
Also they played Summer 84 at Kingswood Music Theatre and Oct 84 at the
Diamond Club
(Kingswood / Diamond were durning the WDTBG World Tour) - Actually Aug 18
and 19 / 84
was the first dates of the world tour ( local Toronto Band " the spoons"
opened)
I was talking to a friend who said he saw them open for "the psycadelic
furs" in Toronto (winter 83) and said audience members were yelling out MEN
WITHOUT TALENT !!! < apparently they hadnt done many live shows at that
point, and the Safety Dance hadnt broken the charts.

I can answer that for you 'dstroud'... You simply buy pre-cut sticky
labels from the shops and print them yourself on any type of printer. I
use the Neato system, which comes with a special applicator to get the
sticky on the CD nice and central - that was about 60UKSterling. The
stickers come in all colours - even see-through though you'll have to make
sure that the blank CD-R disks that you buy don't have any pre-printed
stuff on - like the TDK batch that I just bought!

To whom ever is operating this listing:
There appears to be something amiss here.
1. Some people are not recieving some postings
2. Others are getting messages about excess quotage when there's not
much in the first place!
my suggestion is to either:
1. stop tampering with perfection or...
2. start tampering with the imperfection

Hello hatters!!!!
You see, I am from Montreal, home of MWH. Everybody are talking about Celine
Dion. YES she's good, but honestly, I prefer MWH.
Since the beginnig, we're talking about music and song. But if you come to
Montreal one day, leave me a message and I will do you a tour. If you
remember Where do the boys go video, the big orange ball (that is a
restaurant), the olympic stadium, etc etc. and THE BIG BOHOMME that is a
trade mark of Quebec City for the Carnaval.
Vous savez aussi que Ivan parle aussi bien le francais que l'anglais.
Est-ce qu'il y a des gens parmis vous qui parlez Francais????
Ivan's influence is based on French and English Music. here in Quebec, we
have some French band very good.
Anyway, just to let you know about my culture and MHW culture.

edit down the quoted text you include when you reply to the list. (This is

Here's an idea, Laura:
Why don't a bunch of us take a trip to Montreal -> on the night Ivan
performs to promote his new album, that is..... The Montreal gig! Then
Francis can take a bunch of us around and we can be there for the new
concert as well. It can't be too far in the future. I'm actually
reserving a couple of vacation days from work, just in case.

Hey!!!!
I'm from Atlanta, GA and I would say that I loved the city of Montreal!!!!
It was the people that I hated. NO!!!!!! I am just kiding. Everyone that I
met was very nice and showed me a great time. I will say that many of the
people seemed to be very private. Very European ( I hope that that is not an
insult...I don't mean for it to be one for Canadians or Europeans). I had a
preconception that Montreal would be an extension of Upstate New York, but I
was wrong. Even the Coca-Cola was different.
I hope that I haven't offended half of the world with this little rambling of
mine.
Hey!!! How about that solo CD by Ivan? Won't that be somethin'!!!!

I always wanted to visit Montreal (my wife's been there, she loved
watching the Montreal Canadiens play at the Forum!). I've been to
almost every other place in Canada west of Quebec! I guess I never
could quite work Quebec into my trips. But I sure would love to go some
day and especially to an Ivan concert. Maybe to also meet my hero Mr J.
Bonhomme! Which brings up a point; for me, MWH, has, more than any
other source, stirred up my interest in French Canadian culture. Ivan
has definately made me proud that Quebec is a part of Canada! I do know
some French but definately not enough to speak it! I learned what I
know from high school. I keep telling myself that someday I will learn
it properly! (Ha, Ha!) (My instructor was a bore!!)
To be honest though, I could never quite figure out Rene Simmard, but I
loved the synth-pop scene (The Box and Trans-x are also favourites of
mine). BTW, Francis, is there still any kind of synth-pop scene in
Quebec?

Hello all!
Sorry I haven't been writing to any of you. Oh yeah, its Tom the video
guy. Ive been busy busy busy! I am currently working on getting a
transfer in my company that will mean a $6,000 raise, if I actually get it.
I've had all my interviewing and its down to 3 people! Problem is , I
am worried sick. If I get rejected my heart will be broken. I will find
out next week. I will be pulling my hair out until then..... OK now for
the business at hand.
Here is my opinion on the video. Of course I am going to say I
like it.... In my case, the video and CDs have increased my love of Men
Without Hats and not dimished it. Here is why..... (well besides the
fact that I love all the videos and think that MWH kicks butt live):
I can now enjoy MWH for what they really are.... or what they should
be - a megahit band, not a one hit wonder band. I have always had the
theory that the only thing holding MWH back was lack of exposure. I feel
that most people simply don't like a band becasue they THINK that no one
else likes them, they are not COOL or whatever, so they don't give the band
a chance. Now that I have this videotape - I tested my theory with my
metalhead - rap - grunge friends, you won't beleive the results. I showed
most of friends the video with the attitude like "of course they have 8
videos--- they are huge like depeche mode". -- just to see what would
happen. All of my friends (except for one who truly despises MWH)
watched the tape all the way through. After really getting to know the
band, most of them half way like them, and two love them. These are
people who listen to metalica etc. Of course we could all care less one
way or the other if MWH is popular or not. We will love them no matter
what. But to some sheep this is all that matters.... ha ha. In other
words, The more rare MWH stuff I have -> the BETTER I like this band + the
more I can show them off to the non believers.
Now bring on the demos!!! I am hungry again.
By the way, Francis - I am dead serious about going to Montreal
to visit. Let me just find out whether or not I have this job or not.
Try and keep your eyes on Musique Plus to see if Ivan is playing a concert
in Montreal soon. I WILL definately visit then - somehow. If a concert
doesn't happen soon, I will come and visit you anyway in a couple of
months. I might lose my vacation days when I transfer... This is all I've
got to see. But you have a great idea Francis!
I am with you.

Yup, we stayed in an apartment in Montreal proper (near the St. Henri
Metro stop), and we visited a little diner where the waitress' answer to
"Do you understand English?" was (spelling...) "com ce, com ca" which I've
understood to be "so-so". Anyway, one of the guys with us was from
Columbia, Tennessee (a little town whose main holiday is Mule Day... I
kid you not). He tried to say "Merci" and butchered it REALLY badly to
sound like "Mercy" with a southern drawl "Murrr-see". After grating my
teeth (even though I don't speak French), I had to laugh. :)

I bought the "Collection" when I first saw it on the shelf and love listening
to it frequently.
I have owned the "Where Do The Boys Go?" 12-inch vinyl single for years and
was quite pleased to have another copy of it on CD.
I have no idea where "Editions Of You" comes from. Having it on "Collection"
is the first time I've ever seen or heard of it. (Can anybody here tell me
more regarding its origin?)
I personally think that the extended version of "Where Do The Boys Go?" is
quite a remix - infinitely moreso than what passed as a remix for "Pop Goes
The World"! And "Editions Of You" is quite funny because of the little
cheezy synth notes in the beginning. I mean, it can get no cheesier than
that - which is what makes it so *fun*!!!
The inclusion of both of these tracks cause me to give "Collection" enough
stars to recommend buying it for them alone - but of course one gets so much
more to listen to in doing so as well.

Could anyone get hold of a copy of their Greatest Hits on CD for

Editions of You was licensed from Marc Durand (the band's early
producer) personally. The track was never released comercially and this
particular version had not even been bootleged when we released our

It got awfully quiet all of a sudden. Is it because you-know-who popped
up? It's difficult to take nearly 14 years of [..] and condense them into
a few lines of email for Ivan to see.
Was that actually confirmed though? All I've seen was a forwarded message

by the way, there is no hidden track on the 21st Century Cd. I realized my
mistake after I took out the Cd from my CDROM drive. "ELoise & I seem to
take up tracks 9 and 10 (9 being an intro). So 21st century Saftey Dance is
the song I flipped over. Which, I'm sure, half of you already knew! :)

Bundock!! Wow, I haven't heard anybody mention that group for about 10
years! I bought their mini album 'Mauve' back in 1986/87 and thought it
was pretty good. I bought it because Marc Durand produced it. Of
course, I knew they were Quebecois but they seemed to sing mostly in
English (maybe it was just this album, though).

Hey TOM!!! Good luck for your transfer!!!!
BTW, you were talking about rare things. Went I left Alert Music, the
manager was doing a cleanup in his old things. I gave me 3 MWH posters (1
Folk of tyhe 80's, the first one, 1 is PGTW and one is the freeways tour)
At this time, I got the marvelous idea to laminated them and today, I still
have it.
I got also the first album Folk of the 80's, it's a 10 inches.
I got a MWH clock. Very nice.
We have to open in Montreal the MWH museum...!!!!!

Hey SENZ!!!!!!
Bundock released the're first album in 1987. I like them because of the same
reason as yours, The band was produced by Marc Durand. 2 years later, they
released a second album. They came back in 1989 and 1993 with French Album.
To make a short story, the lead singer of Bundock, PIERRE BUNDOCK use to play
saxophone on THE BOX album. And the lead signer of THE BOX use to play
keyboard with MWH in summer 1981.

Daniele,
One thing I like about the 21stC CD is the fact that "Eloise..." and
"...and I" are tracked separately. That way, if you're in a sad sort of
mood, you can just hear the first part, which IMHO, is one of the most
beautiful pieces written for piano EVER. But if you're feeling happy, you
can jump right into the second part of the song. However, the
juxtaposition of the two parts is very appropriate, and seems to reflect
the idea that there are always two very different sides to Ivan.
hatlessly yours,
C.Frey

Um, so going by the (c)1984 date shown by it on the CD insert would indicate
it came too late to be included in "Rhythm Of Youth" and didn't quite have the
sound of the then-new "Folk Of The 80s, Part III" - so it was shelved?

Um, I have an Italian pressing of ROY (on Statik) and the US version and
"Editions Of You" are on neither of them. How many different versions of
ROY are there in the world?!
Apparently there are two versions of "Antarctica" - the first version which
appears on the "Folk Of The 80s" EP and the one which came later. They
don't sound much different to me - but I still have yet to find time to
take notes while listening to them one after the other.

Yes, the version of Antarctica which appeared on the US version of ROY was
an edit which was missing one of the verses: "Waters bending all out of
shape/I say jump boy before it's too late" or something to that effect.

I believe they're identical up 'til the latter part of the song--the Folk

the ROY version lacks.

If you are outside the USA or Canada I can sell you one directly.
Otherwise, you must find it as an import or buy it from a friend
overseas. Sorry! Unfortunately, there is no news to report on a US or
Canadian release at this time. Sorry again!
For those outside North America:
The CD is $15.98 US dollars + $5 US dollars shipping. I suggest a credit
card for the best exchange rate. Second best would be an international
money order made out in US Dollars.

Anyway, just ordered the new CD writing software so with any luck I'll soon
have _no_ excuse in making a new copy of the live CD again, this time with
no gaps inbetween the tracks! I know that the software that JR had didn't
allow him to do that - thats Toast Pro I'm afraid!!
Tom: u got a DAT of the original recording? The only DAT I can do will be

Bonehead - you still breathing? Still trying to get Blue Juice 4 u...
Chris Handshaw - coming to London any time?
Apart from that, was the message from Ivan real of fake - only Mulder and
Scully can tell us and their series on the UK TV network has finished -
booo - now we'll never know if the truth was out there... lol. If it was
then it was a great honour for us all to hear from the 'Great One'. Just
think, we may all have helped in giving him a nudge to get his finger out
(or sequencer anyway!!) and get recording some new material. If the
rumours are true, then he was only just down the road from me - hey Ivan...

I think the closest thing to a Men Without Hats channel is "#Montreal2" on

The only one I know of is The Safety Dance as sung by Big Daddy, which
isn't entirely serious, either. Big Daddy takes oldies music and sings
modern lyrics to them, for example, singing Van halen's Jump to
Summertime Blues. He sang The Safety Dance to The Twist.
"C'mon baby, let's safety dance!"

Am I the first?!
Just got the most excellent 2fer and it is awesome. I've never heard
this material so clear and crisp before, and it only reinforces my
belief that MWH are THE most timeless sounding band. Without the
familiar snap-crackle-pop of my vinyl, I could easily be fooled into
believing this was a brand new album (in the true - not reissue -
sense). The packaging is wonderful, very professional with a great deal
of care and thought.
I can't thank you enough Carl for bringing this (perhaps the most
important 80's album ever made) to CD. You are indeed a great man! And
may I mention honorable too? The liner notes was the icing on the cake
for me - thanks for small moment of fame.

Hi all,
Just got the new ROY + Folk CD. Carl, how did you do this? Let me just
say that this CD could not possibly be done better. First of all, I own
the original STATIK CDs and this actually sounds better! I thought this
to be technically impossible, since Statik records is out of business. For
those of you who don't have the original CDs,
The artwork and inserts are exactly the same! Its as if some more of the
original CDs were pressed, but even better w/ some extra artwork on the
back, courtesy of OGLIO. Except for collector's value, the orignal $500
valued CDs are meaningless! Ok, maybe i'm overreacting a bit now. But the
fact remains, this is truly amazing. And remember, i'm one of the people
who noticed the "tape hiss" on the Collection CD. This is coming from a
picky audiofille type of person. Carl...... Congrats! You have rescued
the first two MWH albums. Thank You!!!!

For those people in Western Canada, A&B Sound have the MWH "Greatest
Hits" CD for $9.99! To be clear, this is *not* the Oglio (sp?)
"Collection" release of a year ago, but the more recent - and I believe
Canadian only - release. I do not have the track listing handy, but I'm
sure someone on the list will be kind enough to repost it. ;>
If anyone is interested, I am willing to buy you a copy of the CD and
send it to you. The popular method seems to be sending a money order,
then sending out the item. If you are interested, drop me an e-mail
with your address and I'll let you know the whole cost ($9.99 + 15%
taxes + mailing/shipping). As always, I am not looking to make any
money; I just want to help spread the MWH word/music.

I beleive Carl said that this CD will only be pressed in the UK and Brazil.
This would be alright because at least we could all get a copy as an
import. On thing that worries me is some wording on the CD that says ,
"not for sale in the USA". Carl, Does this mean that the US fans can't
get it as an import? They can order it as an import right? Just
wondering......
I listened to the CD in my car today (cassette copy), It definately
sounds better than the originals. Its not even close. I have compared
the original ROY, Folk and then the reissue and every time, the reissue
sounds better, sharper, more depth etc. It can't possibly just be a
tranfer from the original CDs (could it?).
If nothing else, its louder and EQed better than the original CDs. I
hope my ears are not fooling me.

Thanks for the kind words about the 2 for 1 CD quality. We use the best
available masters and in this case the best masters were actually the
Statik CDs. The 1/4" 2 track masters have deteriorated so significantly
that they were not useable.
>From the CDs we spent hours EQing and adjusting levels. We used a
digital recording system called Sonic Solutions to remove the old tape
noise and sweeten the sound.
For those of you that received the first pressing, there is a goof in
the booklet where pages 2 and 11 were switched at the printer. It will
be corrected in future printings.
We are still looking for distribution outside the USA so for now the
only way to get it is directly thru Oglio's mail order. Sorry USA and
Canada, we still can't sell it here. :-(

You can now order the new ROY/Folk3 CD from me.

If you definitively want a copy, please email me with the complete snail mail
adress where you want me to send your disc. I will then return a mail concer-
ning methods of payment to you.
Please make your decision fast! As I have to send all packages at one time to

their discs. Please reply this week. If there are more orders than I have
discs, those people who expressed interest before will be prefered.

Hi all! Laura here...
Thomas mentioned that I'm willing to be the go-between for his great
and gracious offer. I thought I'd post here to give an overview of
what the plan is from my end of things.
It costs $20 to get a check in DM from my bank - others who have
contacted me say it's about the same from their banks. What I
propose is that folks who are interested send me a check for the cost
Thomas gave, plus a fraction of the cost of the foreign bank draft -
i.e. if there's 10 people, it would be an extra $2, plus your 32
cents to send me the check. I've got 7 takers already, and I'd like
to help out at least 3 more people. The more people who want to do
this, the cheaper it comes out for everyone.
I will be going out of town on Friday after lunch (eastern time), and
will be out of the office until Wednesday. We don't want to hold up
the works, since Thomas points out that to get the best rate on
shipping, he needs to send everything at once. I will check
privately with Thomas re: dates and deadlines, and let folks know.
It would be best if we could get this ball rolling by Friday before I
leave, but I also know some people are on the digest and get stuff
late.
More later, probably from home. Remember, when I write from home it
looks like my husband wrote it, but it's really me!
jlkramer@interpath.com is the home address.

A good place to start may be http://www.cdeurope.com
They usually stock every CD available in Europe and they mailorder to the
US.
Another place to check may be the HMV Megastore in London. I think they
do worldwide mailorder. I don't have the number handy but I bet the

I sure am! "Living In China" sounds absolutely amazing on CD. before, on
vinyl, I really didn't give it much thought. So, I can't wait to hear
"Ideas For Walls". Can you imagine how that song sounds remastered on CD?
I love it! And "Great Ones Remember"....I am getting chills. And

Which reminds me, did Ivan ever get the bootleg CDs? Speaking of
remastering, just out of curiosity, how does one become a remasterer (is

Hey hats fan!!!!
Since the begining, nobody talked about the movie Biodome... Personnally, I
like Pauly Shore since a long time.
I have to say that the part of "Safety Dance" in the movie was very
humoristic. Did you like the movie?????
Ciao!

Bubbling is too light a word! I'm extatic. Every song on those two albums
is fantastic! I can't wait to hear those songs on CD!

Hey Carl,
I'd like to know this, too. I'd just as soon order one from you
domestic if I could.

Actually CDEurope don't stock *anything*. They dump the catalogs from all the
distributors they deal with into their own catalog and when you order
something, they try to order it from their distributors, which is why it can
take six weeks or more for them to figure out that they can't fill your order.
They also have a bad reputation for customer service. I hope they're not one
of the companies Carl is dealing with!
The best route would probably be to hang tough until Carl tells us which
overseas retailers he's hooked up with the CD.

I fell off my seat when they did the video (the S thing with their arms). I
loved it!! The reason why I went to ee the movie was to hear Safety Dance.
THat was before I joined the list and I beleive Collection was released. I
was on a rampage trying to find the 12" of the song and I heard the remix on
the previews. To me it sounded like they just put a drum beat so it was as
close to the 12" I could get. Then Carl came along and....the rest is history.
The movie is funny, but the nailbiting part was gross. :) I, too am a
Pauly Shore fan but I wish he'd do better movies.

That movie Rocks Saddam Hussein ASS!!!
Pauly Shore Kicks a mules buttock!!
I like it when they do the "S" thing coming out of the Jungle during Safety
Dance.
That was hilarious!!
Too bad Ivan didn't appear for that scene. Leading the way.
Doing the "S" thing.
They seemed to have gotten the "Little Person" so why not The IVAN!
Maybe some other time

Hi Jeff and all hatters...

I ordered a couple of copies, and still haven't gotten all of them.
Something really freaky went on with the postal service, I guess,
since they're arriving at such peculiar intervals. I'm not panicking
yet, but I know how frustrating this must be for people who are
waiting for their one and only copies. But let me say, it's well
worth the wait!! Nice job, Carl.
Counting the days until May 6... it seems like it's forever and
ever!! ;-)
