  29. Hi.  My name is Vince and I'm from Montreal where Men Without Hats were
  30. formed.  I've been a huge fan of theirs since the very early eighties and
  31. took quite a lot of ribbing about it in school for it.  I seriously think I
  32. was the only one in my school who liked them.  Anyway, that didn't stop me
  33. from wearing their t-shirts in school and flaunting "my" band.  To this day,
  34. people still remember me for that reason (and in some cases, for only that
  35. reason!)  In 1986, I was co-editor of my high school's yearbook, and I
  36. managed to put in a picture of me lying on a table with my "Freeways" tour
  37. t-shirt.  
  38.  
  39. I first noticed MWH in about 1982 when "Safety Dance" was becoming a huge
  40. hit.  Back then, the video was playing practically daily.  One day, my
  41. sister and I were watching it when she turned to me and let me know that the
  42. singer's name is Ivan Doroschuk.  I asked her how she knew this, and she
  43. told me that she used to work with him at the Montreal General Hospital.
  44. Back then, he used to bring the emergency patients into the hospital from
  45. the incoming ambulances.  She told me that he was soft-spoken and often used
  46. to let his fellow employees at the hospital know that he was starting a band
  47. and that he would make it big one day.  This statement would often be met
  48. with laughter and a peppering of 'yeah, sure!'s.  My sister was one of them
  49. who laughed.  To this day, she feels stupid for that.  Anyway,  that
  50. prompted me to buy the "Rhythm of Youth" LP and I instantly became a serious
  51. fan.  Then, last week, I purchased MusicHound's Rock:  The Essential Music
  52. Guide, and found a WWW address dedicated to MWH which led to this E-mail.
  53. I'm still surprised there are big fans of theirs out there.  It's somewhat
  54. reassuring knowing that others find the MWH sound unique and great.
  55.  
  56. I've seen two of their concerts here in Montreal and have accumulated some
  57. articles from newspapers and magazines over the years.  Among some of the
  58. MWH paraphernalia that I have, probably the most unique is a 'no hats' light
  59. switch, which surely wasn't commissioned for MWH, but is still a cool thing
  60. to have if one is a MWH fan.  In any case, I look forward to reading what
  61. you guys have to say out there!

  76. Wow! What an interesting story Vince...and welcome to the
  77. club...Actually, that's very encouraging because I have the same kind of
  78. dream as Ivan and hope it will someday come true. Unfortunately there
  79. isn't alot of support out there. But the key is to hold unto our dreams
  80. despite what others say. Just look what can be accomplished! Look at this
  81. mailing list for example...In just under a year we got the Collection
  82. released, the video compilation completed, and the three demo CD's done.
  83. Next year it will be the 2-fer of the first two albums on CD...There's
  84. "S..A..F..E..T..Y in numbers"

  130. photograph to get a copy of some pictures I have from the hats between 1982
  131. and 1987.  I'm talking about professional picture for the promo.

  389. All the 50 videos are done!  I have returned all the original videos.  
  390. Please tell me if i've missed anyone of the contributers.  There are still
  391. plenty of people who want copies.  Please post if you have 2 VCRs and can
  392. make copies of your (master) video.
  393. I think my VCR is going to get sick if I do another 50 off of my tape. 
  394. It's fine and new now, but I think my heads will get mad if do that much
  395. more recording.
  396.         By the way,  shouldn't we all be discussing the stuff on the video?

  398. CDs would awaken this mailing list.......
  399.         Here's something to discuss....   Did you all know that there is a
  400. "Freeways" video?   Francis told me so.  In fact, Francis has a video
  401. interview segment he showed me that has a 20 second clip of this video!  It
  402. looks classic!  It appears to be MWH performing live in a little Montreal
  403. club, w/ all kind of cool video effects.
  404.        Does anyone have this complete video?  It must be rare because even
  405. Francis doesn't have this.... and he has taped nearly everything in
  406. Montreal -> MWH related since 1987.

  474. I have always wondered about this too. I came across an article once
  475. that described MWH as making a video for WDTBG (or perhaps a different
  476. song from that album) using a "haunted house" motiff. They recorded it
  477. while here in Calgary during their FOT80's III tour.  However, I have
  478. never heard anything to corroberate this (until now of course).  Anybody
  479. else know anything?

  523. US (but unfortunately not abroad), I was glad to help get the CDs to
  524. our overseas list friends, and had this wonderful music going to 5

  582. Well, 'ere in the old UK we are charged anywhere between 10 and 16
  583. UKSterling for a disk, so that equates to 15 to 24 USDollars (approx) plus
  584. postage.  I suppose I could 'buy bulk' through a friends dad's record shop
  585. and hopefully get a reduced price though I'm not sure if the 2 for 1 will
  586. be classed as an import or not...  The problem is that my company (Global
  587. Dynamik - Wang VS software) doesn't have a visa debit account, so maybe
  588. someone else who has can help out!

  608. discussed the similarities etc. of MWH and another Montreal synth band
  609. Rational Youth.

  625. "Cold War Night Life" on CD. They have said that if they get enough
  626. requests they will put it out.

  966. get the discs for people in the USA and Kanada.
  967. There are three possibilities for me to get the discs:

  969. 1. Carl sells me a bunch of discs, like he sold special 'Fan-Copies' of
  970.    'Collection'. Carl, please contact me, if this is possible (I am in
  971.    Germany and I am a private person, no company).

  973. 2. Get them from an ordinary shop. New CDs are about $16 to $20 US here.
  974.    If there's a large request, maybe they will grant me some discount. I've
  975.    never tried that before, so I don't know.

  977. 3. There are always people at record faires selling new discs at low prices.
  978.    Maybe I can get into business with one of them (Never tried before, too).

  1510. sequence. Since both sides had good points we decided to give MWH fans

  1825. Hehe, picked up a used copy of PGTW for $7 right yesterday. It's $25 at the
  1826. only regular store in town that has it.
  1827. Although it was a wednesday, I loved 'On Tuesday' from the very first time I
  1828. listened to it. (Most music I like needed more time to grow on me.) They were
  1829. really at their best in ballads! Think of 'You And Me' or 'Everybody Wants To
  1830. Know'!
  1831. And yes, Hillary, I'd also say that I like PGTW (the song) most of all I've
  1832. heard from them so far (including ROY). In particular, I love the awsome
  1833. remixes.

  1872. I used to talk about "21st Century" and "Pop" all the time. But it seems
  1873. like the majority of the fans on the mailing list enjoy the first two
  1874. albums more.

  1876. Don't get me wrong, I love just about everything the band created... hell,
  1877. it was "Safety Dance" that got me hooked on techno-pop to begin with!
  1878. But the later albums struck an emotional chord in me... they appealed to
  1879. me in a way that was much deeper than just "fun to listen to".
  1880.  
  1881. "Pop Goes The World" (the song) will forever live on in my memory... I
  1882. mimed the entire video for the song to the love of my life. She thought it
  1883. was hysterical. We're no longer together, sadly enough, and everytime I
  1884. hear it I remember the smile on her face and how much I still love her.
  1885.  
  1886. Which leads me to "Bright Side Of The Sun". Hearing that song for the
  1887. first time was like a punch in the gut, as the aforementioned woman and
  1888. I had parted ways (on her insistance), and I'd had fallings-out with a 
  1889. couple of very good friends. It's still my fondest wish that one day I
  1890. and all the people I miss will find some way to meet again and continue
  1891. what I believe was merely put on hold. I've ended many, many, many mixed
  1892. tapes with this song.

  1894. "O Sole Mio" really hits home because of the situation I find myself in now:
  1895. far from my original home and without much meaningful human contact. (For
  1896. some reason, I used to make my own videos for this song in my head... they
  1897. all ended with Ivan atop a rainbow, arms spread, surveying a lush green
  1898. landscape. Dunno why...)

  1900. "In The 21st Century" is wonderful. I can't explain it any better than that.
  1901. Sometimes there are sounds or sights or smells that grab you and won't let
  1902. go... this song is like that. And after getting Tom's tape and finally 
  1903. seeing the video, it's leapt WAAAAAY up on my list of faves. That video is
  1904. truly something special.
  1905.  
  1906. "You & Me" is haunting. I love how Ivan talks about all these major events
  1907. in his life that, to anyone else, would be so trivial, but to him are
  1908. moments of epiphany. The 'angel in a stream' line is something I can relate to,
  1909. having spent an afternoon wading down a river with a girlfriend and having
  1910. the time of my life. And the most important event in his life? 'You and
  1911. me.' Really, really touching. (See my comments above about the love of my
  1912. life...)

  1914. "All We Do" is another song that makes you look at what's in front of you
  1915. in a different light. 'If all we do is live and die..' It's so cool how
  1916. the lyrics cause you to notice what you have, how important it is to
  1917. experience everything, and about how life is something special, something
  1918. that people seem to take for granted.

  1947. ago and Pop Goes the World came out on top. The exact results were:

  1962. I associate to that period in time, made even more memorable because of
  1963. this album. I think we all do because this album does have some very
  1964. intense and emotional works. Ivan did well to communicate those ideas to
  1965. us!

  1967. I still can't figure out what happened with Sideways though!  There
  1968. seems to be anger and frustration coming from this one. (And IMHO,
  1969. little else!)

  1971. Pop Goes The World is my favourite album. The title track, On Tuesday, O
  1972. Sole Mio, Lose My Way, Moonbeam, Jenny Wore Black and especially The End
  1973. (of the World) are all songs that have no equal ANYWHERE in the entire
  1974. world. One thing about PGTW is that it was done as a single work of art,
  1975. unfolding like a story and refering to itself while Ivan even refers to
  1976. his own past! PGTW is unparalleled, beautiful, and simply THE best album
  1977. in existance!

  1994. Dance.
  1995. Each work is excellent in itself. Each work is progressively better than
  1996. the last.
  1997. Sideways has some of the best lyrical content ever written! The musical
  1998. content is a step in a different direction, and it is a direction that
  1999. I enjoyed very much.
  2000. Sideways is not the first work to have a different musical content. From
  2001. synth-pop to a "tasteful" broad range styling pop to a r'n'r pop to
  2002. Sideways(a delightful mix of stylings), MWH has always been progressive.
  2003. Sideways is a step away from the pop stylings we were used to hearing. The
  2004. feeling is still there, though.
  2005. And let us not forget, Sideways has the first Beatles cover song that was
  2006. better than the original!

  2130. I disagree here though. Except for sideways, MWH is not that easily
  2131. pigeon-holed. In the beginning Ivan went through great lengths to go
  2132. beyond the music of the day. (ie create something new and different)  It
  2133. seems to me that in Sideways he made no such effort.

  2135. Rod MacQuarrie,  this is what I mean when I say a song "has no equal". 
  2136. Some songs are very uniquly constructed and others are simply rip-offs
  2137. (blatantly sometimes) of earlier songs or ideas. There aren't many songs
  2138. or artists (for that matter!) who don't continuously mimmick other more
  2139. sucessful artists.

  2178. I agree with you Hillary and Thomas. Personally I find PGTW one of the best 
  2179. pop-albums ever to be written. More than ROY and FOT80's it is cleverly 
  2180. balanced between up-beat and off-tempo music. It is also a concept album which 
  2181. is neatly tied together in the beginning and the end. I think of it as a circle 
  2182. of good music which never stops. You can play it over and over and it never 
  2183. stops to amaze me how cleverly it is put together. It is really well-produced 
  2184. and all the music is really melodic.

  2186. I also believe that since ROY and FOT80 has become so rare, more and more 
  2187. people wanted to get what they couldn't get. I think it is obvious that most of 
  2188. the success of this list is based on the fact that ROY and FOT80 is impossible 
  2189. to get hold of. It wouldn't be so fun chasing a record which was in every shop 
  2190. in the world. Some of the excitement would be lost then. I think that most of 
  2191. us wants to prove to the rest of the world that MWH really made great music. We 
  2192. still hope that the new records would sell in great volumes and that Ivan & co 
  2193. would get really popular again, since they never really got to stay at the top.

  2214. Hehe, picked up a used copy of PGTW for $7 right yesterday. It's $25 at the
  2215. only regular store in town that has it.

  2335. I was very happy at my response to the Pop Goes the World message.  And I agree\with the person who said that this mailing list thrives because of the fact
  2336. that ROY and FOT80 are so rare.  But hey, I've never seen a copy of 21st
  2337. Century on CD and I've only seen 1 of Pop Goes the World, the one my 
  2338. brother found for a dollar.  And I don't even have a copy of Sideways.
  2339. Where do you guys find these CD's.  When PGTW came out, I was only 7
  2340. years old so I hardly went out and bought the CD.  If anybody happens to have

  2367. You gotta love that rennisance (sp?) medival sound that created with those 
  2368. cool sounding analog synths. The Great ones remember also had some 
  2369. interesting synth arrangements and is one of my fave songs. Folk of the 
  2370. 80s had some experimental digital stuff (the weird clashing sound on 
  2371. Eurotheme for example) that kind of continued the experimentation with 
  2372. electronics. The later stuff does have some analogish sounds on it 
  2373. (Moonbeam, Walk on Water, I'm in love) but it isn't the same. Still I like 
  2374. Pop goes the world and In the 21st century nonetheless, but I'll always 
  2375. love Rhythm of youths synthy sound. It was that album that taught me how 
  2376. to play keyboards. :)
