Subject: (hats) "Heaven" by MWH
Date: 02 Jun 1999 10:15:41 -0400
Mr. Stephen D. Sundstrom suggested last month that I e-mail Stefan Doroschuk
regarding the song, "Heaven". Well, I did just that.
He responded within a day or two with the following information:
"We never actually recorded that song for real."
Bummer! I would love to hear a studio version...
He also mentioned that "the Famous Al Gunn" was playing bass for that
concert. I'm guessing he's the same Al Gunn sent to see the doctor, Ben.
:-)
Hatlessly,
Steve

A friend of mine is selling his duplicate copy of the 1984 issue of Canadian
Musician magazine with Ivan on the cover and a MWH article inside... article
talks about grammy nomination, refusing photographs to be taken of the band at
certain times, and other things.... Very cool from the early days!!
It's on eBay right now at:

Thanks...

Hey hatters,
A couple of weeks ago, I gave a suggestion regarding the production of cd#10.
I have on DAT cassette a 1987 1 hour interview with Ivan. He's talking
about Pop goes the world new project.
I got a couple of requests and last month, I decided to produce the CD for 3
hatters.
Like I said, it's in French. I will also include 2 instrumental versions of
"The Safety Dance".
The price is 10$, INCLUDING shipping in US.
the price is 12$ for international shipment.
So if you are interested, write to me, I'll give you my address.
Ciao
Francis

Hi,
I finally talked my band into playing a version of Safety Dance. Does
anyone have the chords for the song or know where I can find them?
Thanks!

Does anybody know what has happened to Uforia.net? I know it has been down
for a while now, but I thought that maybe it was just undergoing some
updating. Now I'm wondering if it will ever resurrect. Also, has anybody
heard anything from Ivan's new music project, Ultimate Pop Machine? I was
looking forward to being able to buy it when it surfaced, but again, haven't
heard anything more about it.
Thanks.
Steve

Subject: (hats) New 80's Compilation...
Date: 28 Jun 1999 10:19:55 -0400 (EDT)
I saw a new 'best of the 80's' compilation the other day that included a
MWH track on it (guess which!), and noted that there were some interesting
liner notes about MWH and Rational Youth. So, I decided to copy it down
and send it onto the list (including the Discography information that may
be desired), so that everyone could check it out.

Blurbs from the liner notes:
RATIONAL YOUTH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forgotten facts about this Montreal band include: (1) Ivan from Men
Without Hats was Rational Youth's singer for a period. He quit after
someone threw a beer bottle at him during a show at the St. Denis
Theatre in Montreal. (2) To make matters a little more confusing, leader
Tracey Howe was once a member of Men Without Hats. He left in 1981, two
years before they hit it big with "Safety Dance". (3) Howe had a knack
of choosing names that were already taken. Before Rational Youth, he was
in Heaven Seventeen (not to be confused with Heaven 17, the British Band)
and The Normals (not The Normal, Daniel Miller's alter-ego). "Rational
Youth" was a derivative of National Youth Orchestra. (4) "Saturdays In
Silesia" was inspired by the famous Lech Walesa-led strike at the Gdamsk
Shipyard. And (5) the last Rational Youth show was at Dalhousie
University in Halifax in November 1985.
MEN WITHOUT HATS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Ivan Doroschuk quit Heaven Seventeen/Rational Youth (see note
above), he recruited his brother, Stephan, to play bass in a new group.
Joining him was guitarist Tracey Howe (the founder of Rational Youth),
and drummer Jermanie Arrabos. Of these three, Arrabos proved to be the
most important. Not only did the new band get to rehearse at the family's
Mount Royal mansion in Montreal, but Arrabos' father bought the group
equipment and financed the recording of their debut EP. The following
year (and after Howe quit), Men Without Hats had a worldwide hit with
"Safety Dance". The single became a Top Ten hit in nineteen different
countries. It hit Number 2 in the US, Number 2 in Germany, and #6 in the
UK. It was such a big song that some people started calling Men Without
Hats "North America's version of Kraftwerk". What about in Canada? No
matter which singles chart you use, the song never did any better than
Number 11. The group followed up with a series of well-received
techno-pop singles throughout the rest of the decade before they were
finally killed off during the grunge boom of the early 90's.

Hey gang.
I didn't know that you want to learn French with Ivan, or it's the "Safety
dance, instrumental" who got your attention, but I received so much request
that I just burned 20 cd's. They are ready to ship.
I got around 15 requests, if some of you want a copy, it's 10$, including
shipping in U.s.. 12$ for overseas.
Just E-mail me if you are interested.
Thanks
Francis
