no, no, no, no, no: they always survive. Since you decided to stick to the
sweet characters: they only line on pages of heroic fantasy books.

aaaw... you pulled that one too far. It's not so simple. No man is an angel.
I don't think the world changed the Dominator, Lady, Limper, Soulcatcher
into monsters. Before it started changing them, thay had what it takes to
act mercilessly. All they had to do was to reaveal it. And, the cruelty is
definately not the sole quantity required: you have to pass many a
accidental, dangerous, etc. situations. It's a combination of lucky, cruel,
smart, charismatic- not only tough.. You can't just take any person and see
them changing into rulers. They wouldn't last one minute.

Interesting choices. I think Wheezy was black (if I
recall, he's from the same area as One Eye). Think we
could get Willie Nelson to play him in blackface? (chuckle)

Subject: (glencook-fans) Casting the BC Movie
Y'all are gonna have to indulge me here a little because
casting a movie from a book is one of my favorite games. It
amazes me that I never gave much thought to it as far as
"The Company" goes. After reading a few nominations here, I
have thought about it for a while this evening and here is
my 2 cents worth.
1. The Dominator- The Rock (Wrestler and "the Mummy
Returns" Scorpion King) he has the right look and it would
be another brief role.
2. Lady/Soulcatcher- Christina Ricci, with a little
computer assistance they could use her Wednesday Adamms
persona for Croaker and Lady's daughter.
3. Croaker- David Morse (the other Guard on the Green
Mile), he's kinda big and maybe a little paunchy and with a
short beard I think he would do nicely. Plus he has a sort
of dreamy quality about him.
4. The Captain- Robert Duval, very commanding presense and
strong authority figure.
5. The Leutenant- Christopher Walken, handsome, competent
and a little world weary.
6. The Limper- I'll go along with Dennis Hopper on this
one. I wouldn't have thought of him but he would be perfect
now that i think about it.
7. Raven- Russell Crow, even the name fits.
8. Silent- Liam Neeson, strong actor and no worriy about
his accent.
9. Tom-Tom- Morgan Freeman
10.One-eye- Eddie Murphy, with enough time in the make up
chair he can be anybody you want and he can be seriously
funny.
11.Goblin- Paul Reubens (AKA Peewee Herman)
12.Whisper- Kathy Bates
13.Elmo- Oliver Platt
14.-Shapeshifter- John Rys-Davies, big boistrous, loud and
sort of hairy.
15.Murgen- Johnny Depp- Hallucinating, time traveling,
occasionally catatonic Murgen is perfect for Depp.
16.Big Bucket-Mick Foley (another Wrestler but he wouldn't
have to do much but stand around with his bucket hanging
out).
17.Sahra- Lucy Liu or Michelle Yeow(sp)?
18.Wheezy- Willy Nelson, Hey I'm a Texan, Ya gotta have
Willy in there somewhere.
19.Mogaba- Samuel L. Jackson
20.Sindawe- Danny Glover
21.Blade- Nicholas Cage, because his uncle said he could.
22.Willow Swan- Alexander Godunov (just for the looks).
23.Howler- Alan Rickman
Darling would have to be played by an unknown, and I'm not
very familiar with asian or Indian(east) actors so I won't
try to go there.

Absolutely PERFECT!
Andreas Katsulas, they guy up played G'Kar would make a good fit
in the BC world, maybe as the Captain? He's definately got the
chops for it. Hmmm, maybe the woman who played Ivanova, Claudia
Christian, would make a good Lady? She's definately got the right
complexion and hair. Hmmm, maybe not, not the nubile type.

Mocker,
"I always though he [Croaker] had about 30 years at the begining of
Black Company"
According to the Black Company Index web site
http://www.connectexpress.com/~rfr/bcompany1.html
Croaker is "Over 40 by the time of the Tally campaign". The citation
for this is _Shadows Linger_, p. 30. I'm not at home now, so I can't
verify the citation. But that accords very well with my internal
picture of Croaker--30 is way too young for him at the beginning of the saga.
"if he had this age [mid 40's] at the beginning of Black Company (you're
describing the captain so it probably is) he would be something of 70-80
in the last book"
I estimate something like 20 or 25 years from the beginning of the saga
till the end of Glittering Stone II, _She is the Darkness_ (those who
have read the entire series will know why I choose that as the logical
point for determining end ages). If it starts with Croaker around 45,
this places him in his late 60's or so at the end--which is compatible
with my picture of him at that time. If 70 seems too old to you, and
you think it is 25 years, not 20, then make him 40 at the beginning; I
won't quibble over 5 years.

Mocker, Gwen,
Is there any place on line I can get hold of the Polish National
Anthem--the music? Just the first line would do.
I'm singing in a performance of "The Holocaust Cantata", which includes
a very stirring song (composed in the concentration camps) of Polish
resistance. The first line of the Polish National Anthem is quoted (in
Polish); it would be interesting to know if the melody it's sung to is
the Anthem melody.

MessageJust a few other thoughts regarding this.
The Captain: Powers Booth (Red Dawn, Tombstone)
The Lieutenant: Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy SEALS)
Croaker: Bruce Willis.
Silent - Wes Studi (The Sphinx in 'Mystery Men', Last of the Mohicans,
Heat).
Raven: Keifer Sutherland
I've also thought Joey Lauren Adams (with black hair) could make a good
Lady. Her voice sounds almost child-like and she looks (IMO) quite young.
Too bad Richard Pryor is in such bad shape from MS, I think he could do a
passable One Eye (since Redd Foxx isn't around, of course). Pryor sure looks
old enough for the part these days.

I'm very much a fan of Michael Clark Duncan and Ving Rhames but I tend to
think they're a little to beefy for the roles of Mogaba and Sindawe. I
always got the impression that they were lean, mean fighting machines, more
slender and sinewy than huge and muscled out. Maybe that was all in my
head. I would pick someone like Djimon Hounsou (Juba from Gladiator, Cinque
from Amistad) instead. A moot point though, since any movie would likely
just be based on The Black Company and not include Mogaba until well into
sequel territory. I actually envision these books done more justice as a
lengthy, gritty, complex miniseries event ala SciFi channels ambitious (yet
strangely mediocre) Dune.
As for lady, I also think Uma Thurman is way off base and have to give the
big thumbs down to Madelaine Stowe, both excellent actors but physically
wrong for the role. Uma is too light and willowy and Madelaine a little too
old. Lady, late in the series always appeared, young, fresh and nubile. I
also seem to recall her being a pretty well put together dark haired beauty.
Although I'm not a huge fan of her work, as far as name actors go, I think
Catherine Zeta Jones fits the physical bill the best. If I were casting
this thing, however I would probably look for a talented unknown. Keep in
mind that Lady isn't an actual physical presence in The Black Company until
well into the book, I think keeping her off screen and mysterious until
unveiling a new hottie ingΘnue would work well.
Tommy Lee Jones - love him! Although I think I'd rather see him as the
Captain, he fits my mental picture better.
Johnny Depp - I see him more as a Raven than Croaker, but Croaker's a
toughie for me, I find myself unable to settle on someone for him, although
I occasionally consider Michael Ironside and then think I'd be happy just to
see him play one of the more interesting and cutthroat members of the
Company like maybe Silent.
Dennis Hopper would make a great Limper, good call! I went way the other
direction and was thinking Steve Buscemi. He could do creepy so well
although he's just funny looking enough for Goblin.
Elmo: Clancy Brown (Highlander's the Kurgan, Starship Troopers' Sergeant
Zim)
Wow, that was longer than I intended. Can you tell I'm a movie geek?

Marylin Manson as the Dominator? The Dominator was supposed to be a)

He was killin people with raw strength in the White Rose. Prolly just need

Mogaba? Not Michael Clark Duncan. He can't do menacing badness well.
He'd make a great Sindawe who was a much nicer guy with an incredible
physique. Vingh Rhames on the other hand is who I always think of when I
think of Mogaba. (Marcelles Wallace in Pulp Fiction, Shad in Striptease).
Ving does menacing badass _VERY_ well.

Gee, this topic again. Although Dennis Hopper is a good choice for
Limper, I could see Anthony Hopkins pulling it off too, especially in
'Raker' when the mask is pulled off and he sips tea. Liam Neeson would be a
decent Silent, as he can look expressive and sinister. If Danny Glover lost
weight he could be a great One-Eye, if a little tall. Mark Wahlberg,
although I hate to admit it, *could* pass as Raven, or Daniel Baldwin, if
he lost some weight. Johnny Depp could be aged a bit (he always looks
young) to play the Croaker of the first trilogy. Marilyn Manson as the
Dominator? No need to waste money with make-up, he brings his own. James
Woods as the Captain? Maximilian Schell would be a suitable Raker. Christina
Ricci can be a bit sinister and with some work might work out as
Lady/Soulcatcher. Rob Zombie is a great Shapeshifter in my opinion.
Undertaker as Bonegnasher.
Ultimately, a Final Fantasy or Heavy Metal 2000 style movie would
work for me too, as costs wouldn't be too prohibitive, thus not taking as
long to produce as live action. With the Lightwave program, Exile Films is
doing a great job with the Warhammer 40K movie.
Just some opinions,
Steve

Gee, this topic again. Although Dennis =

good choice for Limper, I could see Anthony Hopkins pulling it off =
too,=20
especially in 'Raker' when the mask is pulled off and he =

Liam Neeson would be a decent Silent, as he can look expressive =
and=20
sinister. If Danny Glover lost weight he could be a great One-Eye, =
if a=20
little tall. Mark Wahlberg, although I hate to admit it, =
*could*=20
pass as Raven, or Daniel Baldwin, if he lost some weight. =
Johnny=20
Depp could be aged a bit (he always looks young) to play the =
Croaker of=20
the first trilogy. Marilyn Manson as the Dominator? No need to =
waste money=20
with make-up, he brings his own. James Woods as the Captain? =
Maximilian=20
Schell would be a suitable Raker. Christina Ricci can be a bit =
sinister=20
and with some work might work out as Lady/Soulcatcher. Rob Zombie =
is a=20
great Shapeshifter in my opinion. Undertaker as Bonegnasher. =

Ultimately, a Final Fantasy or Heavy Metal 2000 =
style=20
movie would work for me too, as costs wouldn't be too prohibitive, =
thus=20
not taking as long to produce as live action. With the Lightwave =
program,=20
Exile Films is doing a great job with the Warhammer 40K=20
movie.

Weren't One-Eye Goblin and Tom Tom in their hundreds, say about 200 or 300? I
realize they had magic on their side, but...
