Subject: Re: (glencook-fans) BC Movie
Hi, all,
Movie stars I know from nothing. All I can do is describe that I see as
the salient points of the characters.
Croaker: Grizzled, harried; largely bald, with an errant hair pasted
along his front always falling into his eyes as he pores over his books.
He's got a bit more paunch than he really ought to, as a solider; but
he's very fit. Maybe mid 40's. He has several different personas that
he assumes as needed: the concerned bed-side physician, the no-nonsense
senior officer, the scholar looking to dig into the past; and when he
takes the lectern to read to his brethren from the Chronicles, his voice
takes on dramatic tones, his unwavering eye captures every face, and he
inhabits, he lives the part of his forebear, as he makes the past come alive.
the Captain: Older than just about anyone else (60), but also more fit;
he radiates command with his silent presence of superb confidence in
himself and his men. He almost never speaks, is seldom seen--but his
presence is always sensed; the men look at his tent, know he's in there,
and feel relieved.
Elmo: The prototypical First Sergeant, the tallest and biggest-looking
man in the Company. His shout can be heard across a raging battelfield,
his merest whisper--up close and personal--will cause a recruit to
dribble down his leg.
Silent: Not just in his voice, but in his movements; he's not small,
but he sticks to the shadows, hangs back, and suddenly appears in front
of whomever he needs to get the attention of. Clean-shaven, fastidious
about his person. Too much in shadow to determine his age clearly.
Raven: Always hooded--not physically, but emotionally. His eyes are
always downcast or looking off to the side, except when he's talking to
the Captain (in his mind, his only equal) or when he's about to kill the
person he's talking to. His clothes are always better than anyone
else's--even if he's been on a drunk and slept in them for a week.
Younger than anyone else of his stature in the Company (30?).
One-Eye: So grizzled you can't tell whether he still has any hair left
or if those are wrinkles inside his wrinkles. Ebony in original
skin-tone, but his body has been so abused with drink and general
wasting, that he has splotches on his splotches. Looking at him
standing, you'd think he'd be too arthritic to walk, but he's incredibly
spry and dexterous. He always looks like he's about to cackle, when in
company, but by himself--or, very rarely, when he's being serious with
someone--his soul of wisdom becomes looks out of his ancient eyes.
Goblin: Never has a serious moment in his life, whether alone or in
company, drunk or sober. His nickname comes from his misshapen face, a
rictus he cannot get rid of (a scar? a tic?). Everyone--everything--is
a source of sour amusement to him: not jolly, but cynically amused at
the world, which he knows is going to get him as soon as he turns his back.
the Lady: Standing, smiling sweetly, you think she's about 22; then she
turns to order her empire into motion, and she seems about twice that
age and made of steel; then she sinks into her own thoughts in
inward-turning silence, and you begin to suspect there are centuries to
add to that. She never shows that any person or any event has made a
mark upon her soul--all is just grist for her to contemplate and come up
with the way to turn it to her advantage.

Whoops ya right, forgot that SC thought she had killed the Captured.
However she did have the capability to destroy the world at any time she
wanted by breakin the shadowgate, or just by roaming around burning down
villages at a whim cause no one around was big enough to stop her.

MessageCroaker: Jerry Doyle. (the guy who played Garibaldi in Babylon =
5.) Fits the bill perfectly, and if ya look at the cover of She is the =
Darkness, that is a picture of croaker on the cover and Doyle looks a =
bit like him. Also Doyle is great at pulling off the sarcastic and grim =

Goblin: Peter Jurasik. Played Londo on B5 (can you tell I'm a b5 fan?). =
Great at playing a jester and then switching to dead serious fast.

hmmm some good points but I have a few things that I think I dissagree =
with.
Ok #1 I think that if BC were ever going to become a reality for the =
big screen or the small screen you would have to use less known/Not =
known actors/actresses. This is simply on the fact that you want to =
focus more on the storyline then on the characters. Although Croaker is =
the main element in the first couple books, and you would wanna convey =
his cynicism, you wouldnt want someone large to play the part. =20
that said.... I think that clancy brown would work for elmo. for =
Raven, I see more of a brooding person, and although johnny depp could =
do it, I dont think he would be a good raven.
I dont think that ms jones would be a good pick for the lady. I have =
always seen the lady more of a very light skinned northern beauty. Such =
as someone from ireland or scotland, that has very pale skin, with just =
a hint of color, and very black/raven wavy hair. Catherine zeta jones, =
while absolutely beautiful, I feel has too dark of a complexion to fit =
that.
How about this though, for toadkiller's human counter part (cant =
remember if he had a name off the top of my head, and im one book behind =
on the re-read) Ron Perlman. I think his presence would work with that =
very well :)

I'm very much a fan of Michael Clark Duncan and Ving Rhames but I =
tend to think they're a little to beefy for the roles of Mogaba and =
Sindawe. I always got the impression that they were lean, mean fighting =
machines, more slender and sinewy than huge and muscled out. Maybe that =
was all in my head. I would pick someone like Djimon Hounsou (Juba from =
Gladiator, Cinque from Amistad) instead. A moot point though, since any =
movie would likely just be based on The Black Company and not include =
Mogaba until well into sequel territory. I actually envision these =
books done more justice as a lengthy, gritty, complex miniseries event =
ala SciFi channels ambitious (yet strangely mediocre) Dune. =20
As for lady, I also think Uma Thurman is way off base and have to =
give the big thumbs down to Madelaine Stowe, both excellent actors but =
physically wrong for the role. Uma is too light and willowy and =
Madelaine a little too old. Lady, late in the series always appeared, =
young, fresh and nubile. I also seem to recall her being a pretty well =
put together dark haired beauty. Although I'm not a huge fan of her =

Tommy Lee Jones - love him! Although I think I'd rather see him as =
the Captain, he fits my mental picture better.
Johnny Depp - I see him more as a Raven than Croaker, but Croaker's =
a toughie for me, I find myself unable to settle on someone for him, =
although I occasionally consider Michael Ironside and then think I'd be =
happy just to see him play one of the more interesting and cutthroat =
members of the Company like maybe Silent.
Dennis Hopper would make a great Limper, good call! I went way the =
other direction and was thinking Steve Buscemi. He could do creepy so =
well although he's just funny looking enough for Goblin.
Elmo: Clancy Brown (Highlander's the Kurgan, Starship Troopers' =
Sergeant Zim)
Wow, that was longer than I intended. Can you tell I'm a movie =
geek?

Now that Red Foxx is dead there can be no Black Company movie, for =
he was the one true One-Eye. =3D( Short, crotchity, melodramatic, and =
mean. Fred Sanford =3D One-Eye.
Marylin Manson as the Dominator? The Dominator was supposed to be =
a) very handsome b) heavily muscled c) very tall. Manson meets none of =
these. He was killin people with raw strength in the White Rose. =
Prolly just need to find some unknown for him since he will have a 5 =
minute part at best.
Mogaba? Not Michael Clark Duncan. He can't do menacing badness =
well. He'd make a great Sindawe who was a much nicer guy with an =
incredible physique. Vingh Rhames on the other hand is who I always =
think of when I think of Mogaba. (Marcelles Wallace in Pulp Fiction, =
Shad in Striptease). Ving does menacing badass _VERY_ well.

Gee, this topic again. Although Dennis Hopper is a good =
choice for Limper, I could see Anthony Hopkins pulling it off too, =
especially in 'Raker' when the mask is pulled off and he sips tea. Liam =
Neeson would be a decent Silent, as he can look expressive and sinister. =
If Danny Glover lost weight he could be a great One-Eye, if a little =
tall. Mark Wahlberg, although I hate to admit it, *could* pass as =
Raven, or Daniel Baldwin, if he lost some weight. Johnny Depp could be =
aged a bit (he always looks young) to play the Croaker of the first =
trilogy. Marilyn Manson as the Dominator? No need to waste money with =
make-up, he brings his own. James Woods as the Captain? Maximilian =
Schell would be a suitable Raker. Christina Ricci can be a bit sinister =
and with some work might work out as Lady/Soulcatcher. Rob Zombie is a =
great Shapeshifter in my opinion. Undertaker as Bonegnasher.=20
Ultimately, a Final Fantasy or Heavy Metal 2000 style movie =
would work for me too, as costs wouldn't be too prohibitive, thus not =
taking as long to produce as live action. With the Lightwave program, =
Exile Films is doing a great job with the Warhammer 40K movie.
Just some opinions,
Steve

Y'all are gonna have to indulge me here a little because casting a movie =
from a book is one of my favorite games. It amazes me that I never gave =
much thought to it as far as "The Company" goes. After reading a few =
nominations here, I have thought about it for a while this evening and =
here is my 2 cents worth.
1. The Dominator- The Rock (Wrestler and "the Mummy Returns" Scorpion =
King) he has the right look and it would be another brief role.
2. Lady/Soulcatcher- Christina Ricci, with a little computer assistance =
they could use her Wednesday Adamms persona for Croaker and Lady's =
daughter.
3. Croaker- David Morse (the other Guard on the Green Mile), he's kinda =
big and maybe a little paunchy and with a short beard I think he would =
do nicely. Plus he has a sort of dreamy quality about him.
4. The Captain- Robert Duval, very commanding presense and strong =
authority figure.
5. The Leutenant- Christopher Walken, handsome, competent and a little =
world weary.
6. The Limper- I'll go along with Dennis Hopper on this one. I wouldn't =
have thought of him but he would be perfect now that i think about it.
7. Raven- Russell Crow, even the name fits.
8. Silent- Liam Neeson, strong actor and no worriy about his accent.
9. Tom-Tom- Morgan Freeman
10.One-eye- Eddie Murphy, with enough time in the make up chair he can =
be anybody you want and he can be seriously funny.
11.Goblin- Paul Reubens (AKA Peewee Herman)
12.Whisper- Kathy Bates
13.Elmo- Oliver Platt
14.-Shapeshifter- John Rys-Davies, big boistrous, loud and sort of =
hairy.
15.Murgen- Johnny Depp- Hallucinating, time traveling, occasionally =
catatonic Murgen is perfect for Depp.
16.Big Bucket-Mick Foley (another Wrestler but he wouldn't have to do =
much but stand around with his bucket hanging out).
17.Sahra- Lucy Liu or Michelle Yeow(sp)?
18.Wheezy- Willy Nelson, Hey I'm a Texan, Ya gotta have Willy in there =
somewhere.
19.Mogaba- Samuel L. Jackson
20.Sindawe- Danny Glover
21.Blade- Nicholas Cage, because his uncle said he could.
22.Willow Swan- Alexander Godunov (just for the looks).
23.Howler- Alan Rickman
Darling would have to be played by an unknown, and I'm not very familiar =
with asian or Indian(east) actors so I won't try to go there.

I thought the specification was "single book story." Wouldn't that exclude books
part of a series? (i.e. Black COmpany or Garret files)

From: Igor Filippov <igor@osc.edu>
Subject: Re: (glencook-fans) Most Evil Character
Just to add my 2 cents worth -
NONE of them was evil, BC is a story of a group (or rather groups)
of people who're just trying to survive. Croaker said as much
about the BC proper quite a few times, Lady (I think it was
in "White Rose") mentioned that the only reason that she started
trying to excell in magical abilities was her fear of death;
Limper (and the rest of the Taken) have been tortured and
almost-but-not-quite killed so many times they're driven half-mad
by pain alone. Dominator put the whole nations to death in his time
trying to conceal his true name - this is not to justify any
of this (or any of them) but to say that the simple truth is
this is a cruel world and sweet and fuzzy pink bunny-characters
tend to have low life expectancy.
This is I think one of the great charms of the realism in BC series -
the way Mr. Cook shows the changing personalities of
once-upon-a-time decent guys into what some people may see
as homi-(or even geno-)-cidal monsters under the pressure of
battle for survival.
Igor
P.S. I don't see that Napoleon "libirated" anyone either :)
