Hi, this is voice from the East :)
I'm Anna, "Gwen", the Chairwoman of The Black Company fan-club "Khatovar" in
Poland, recently awarded the inside title of the Lady ;).
Just wanted to say "hello", and maybe invite everyone interested to our
convention in July, devoted mostly to The Company. Of course, it's in
Poland, so the distance is substantial, but we would gladly welcome other
fans. We also want to invite Glen Cook, soon as we can gather $1000 for the
flight.;) Not soon, that is...
Best Regards,
Gwen

What a surprise! I am from Poland too. Unfortunately i don't know
anything about July's convention. Can you tell me (us) something more
about it(URL)?
Best Regards,
UnKnowN

We're in the process of getting all our papers through the court, so the tax
office wont get our butts, so everything can change.
It's in Lodz, mid- July, maybe with some support from the Kapitula. Were
doing this with cooperation with the Elven Enthusiasts League, and the Wild
Banthas- both theese clubs as small as ours. So the program is: lots of
talking about TBC, lots of RPG (we provide professional GMs), a show by
Fianna (these guys really like it tough, and use sharp swords), possibly a
concert by Lutnia, an Elven food corner, and other on with military food
(peas:) forever!!). Soon we will have an ad in the MiM magazine.
Best Regards
Gwen

Sorry about the delay, Eric. I'm in the middle of moving cross-country,
which is surprisingly more difficult when you have a 3 month old, and have
had my hands full. With that said, here we go...

That should do it...
The whole Darkwar trilogy is (primarily) about one character: Marika. It
takes her from her humble beginnings as a "primitive savage" to the most
powerful creature on her world. I really liked this progression, but the
plot device that made me it enjoy it was the sense of premonition that
surrounded her right from the beginning. There was always some character who
feared and/or hated her for what she was or for what she seemed fated to
become, but depending on the context Cook could make it seem like a real
premonition (as in the author trying to tell the reader something) or simply
a crackpot character who had her own agenda into which Marika didn't fit. As
the trilogy plays out and we see just how horrible/powerful/destructive
Marika actually is, culminating at the end of the third book where she
realizes the worst fears of the most vocal of her critics.
Ok, the thing I liked so much about the Ending was that it was just that: an
Ending with a capital E. At the end of the series Marika (the protagonist)
is dead, along with every other Silth that her race has produced. The
changes that she has wrought on her culture and her world are such that the
Silth caste to which she belonged has been wiped out and is not only
unlikely to reappear, but should it attempt to do so it would find the
society of the world as a whole unable and unwilling to support it. In
essence, the end of the series is not only the end of the main character,
but is also the end of an age, the end of an era.
Remember the end of The Return of the King, how Tolkien has established that
this is the closing of the 3rd age of Middle Earth and that there is no
longer any place for magic, elves, hobbits and the like. Or remember the end
of the movie The Last Emperor, where the last emperor of China returns to
the forbidden city only to find the places where he grew up changed into a
communist museum? Both of these endings has the same feel (for me at least -
I hate to draw any correlation between Cook and Tolkien, but in this context
it seemed appropriate) of a way of life ending with such finality that there
is no hope of regaining it.
And that is why I liked the ending so much.
So... I assume that anyone who has read this far has also read the Darkwar
trilogy because of the spoilers warnings above. If you have read these
books, please write in and let us know. Since everyone was so silent to my
first message, I'm wondering if most list members have just never read the
books at all...

I am also one of those who enjoys reading Darkwar.

The group apparently doesn't have much to say.
So why did you like the ending?
