  31. One of the nice things about this book is Cook tried to capture the feel
  32. of the 30s - 50s detective novels as opposed to modern.  Chandler and
  33. the other hardboiled types come to mind - and while it is a fantasy book
  34. it has a completely different tone from the Black Company and Dread
  35. Empire.

  37. For example - when Garrett finds Rose with the stake on the trip home
  38. and spanks her with it - definately something you won't find in a modern
  39. detective novel, and very out of place in either the BC or DE.  Little
  40. anachronisms like that are sprinkled throughout the novel.

  58.     Meisha Merlin might be a better bet - they do small(ish) print
  59. runs of stuff with die-hard fan followings - they've reprinted some of
  60. Janet Kagan, Miller & Lee's Liaden novels (including three new ones),
  61. P.C. Hodgell - I think a GC collection might be right up their line.

  78. Black Company that existed in Germany in the 1500's. I wonder (as does the

  201. Croaker had the First Father's book and read some minor spell to trigger the
  202. explosion. Thus destroying Kina.
  203. Croaker referred to it as a cantrip. Chapter 136, page 459 hardback.
