  21. The problem with fleshing out a book that is in first person is that the narrator (or Annalist, as the case my be) must have contact with the person or someone who has had contact with that person. The Company never had contact with many of the Taken.

  23. Also, I think that in the first series, Cook does a great job of describing "life in the trenches." How many privates in Desert Storm *really* knew what Schwarzkopf was like? To them, he was probably the sterotypical general.

  38. South and Glittering Stone.

  41. 955 pages 15 years ago and not the 2400 pages that were written since. There
  42. aren't discussions about ShadowMasters, Gunni, Shaddar, Deceivers, Taglios,
  43. Shivetya, Kina, etc. You may get one or two replies if you are lucky.

  45. But bring up the name of a Taken, Goblin, One-eye, the Dominator, or Charm,
  46. etc. you can get an extended discussion for a week with the quotes and
  47. research that would impress any doctoral review board. But only from the
  48. Books of the North.

  51. context of the Books of the North than within the rest of Glittering Stone.

  116. on a more serious note, an explanation may be that most readers are simply
  117. more familiar with the books of the north. i (for one) have read them
  118. upwards of a dozen times over the years. whenever i'm looking through the
  119. bookshelves for something to read and the cook section catches my eye... but
  120. of the books of the south that i've read (i never completed water sleeps and
  121. won't likely start soldiers live until i re-read the whole series) i've only
  122. read them once or (in the case of the first two) twice. although there's
  123. plenty of evidence to the contrary (;-]) i think it's harder to throw
  124. opinions around when you don't have as firm a grasp of the topics. give it a
  125. few years and you'll probably see your post to reply message ratios for the
  126. north and the south converging.

  129. review board...

  290. Matthew makes a good point in that most people are more familiar with the
  291. books of the North because they've been read multiple times.
  292.  
  293. I can only speak for myself, but I found the Books of the North to be much
  294. better at capturing the character of the Company itself, hence the fact that
  295. it's the series that I re-read on an occasional basis.  Sure, you have
  296. plenty of background information on the Empire, the Taken, the Lady, Charm,
  297. Juniper, etc....but it doesn't overshadow the Company itself.

  299. The books of the South appear to place more emphasis on the cultures of the
  300. south, their religions, and how they interact.  Personally I don't really
  301. give a damn if the Gunni or monotheists or polytheists, and I sure as hell
  302. don't want to spend what amounts to a chapter of a book delving into their
  303. religious structure.  I think religion and social structure are great things
  304. to flesh out characters (Sleepy or Uncle Doj) or environment but if I want
  305. to read a novel on socioeconomic policy, I'll go pick up Heinlein.  I also
  306. liked the idea that most characters had a single, descriptive name rather
  307. than having twenty characters referred to as Singh....even if it is the
  308. equivalent of a "Johnson" or "Smith".
  309.  
  310. You also have a disjointedness that seems to plague the books of the south.
  311. Due to the supernatural circumstances and the different Annalists
  312. viewpoints, the series doesn't flow as well as the books of the North.  I
  313. think differrent Annalist's viewpoints adds spice, but after a while, some
  314. of the out of body experiences got a bit irritating.
  315.  
  316. Honestly I wanted to re-read the entire series before reading
  317. _Soldiers_Live_ but in the end I decided against it just because I knew I'd
  318. have to try to push through the Books of the South before _Soldiers_ was
  319. printed.  Don't get me wrong, I like just about all of Cook's works (except
  320. maybe Tower of Fear) but the next time I tackle the Black Company as an
  321. entire series, I'm going to take it slow and easy, and try to better
  322. appreciate the worldbuilding in the Books of the South.

  370. In the books of the North, you have the Ten, and what a bunch of wily,
  371. backstabing, insane sorcerers! Now they made great villians.
  372. Look at the villians in the South:
  373. Longshadow: insane, but so very afraid of the shadows.  He never lifts a
  374. finger sorcerously except to release some shadows.  He's basically a
  375. simpering fool in a really big castle.
  376. The rest of the shadowmasters: Not quite as hard to kill as the Taken. 
  377. Also did they ever contribute anything to any of the battles except for
  378. the web that Soulcatcher destroyed over Dejagore?
  379. Naryan and Booboo: Great idea for a secret cult of hidden assassins, but
  380. all they do is stay hidden.  They make one attempt at the palace, and
  381. basically end up killing a bunch of ancilliary characters.
  382. Kina: was it just me, or did she sleep through all the books?
  383.

  385. I'm not being totally serious, and while I did love all the BC books, I
  386. just didn't find the "bad guys" to be all that terrible in the south.

  471. I've actually found the Books of the South to be quite interesting. The
  472. non-Western cultures are what grab me the most I think. It's not something
  473. found in m any fantasy books these days and really makes Cook stand out.
  474. Plus you can tell he's done his homework when it comes to
  475. Buddhist/Islam/Hindi faiths.

  477. Unlike most on the list I think I may like the Books of the South more than
  478. the North. While the changing of Annalists does seem strange, once you get
  479. going the weirdness fades into the background. There also seems to be a lot
  480. more going on in the background, stuff that doesn't make sense when you
  481. first read it but 2 books later it suddenly comes into focus what Cook was
  482. trying to do.

  665. I started the BC series with "Shadow Games" after all it said "First book of
  666. the South"
  667. I quickly found myself reading "A confusing sequal to a story I never read"
  668. but it primed me for the books of the North.  I think all the books are
  669. really good.. each with a different "flavor" .. The only "rough" parts for
  670. me was reading "Bleak Seasons" which was the first BC book I had to wait for
  671. to be published.. and it had a missing page and it was very confusing even
  672. though I had read the other books multiple times..  I think "Bleak Seasons"
  673. and "Dreams of Steel" could have been one book...  But then after "Bleak" we
  674. got "She is the Darkness" which I think is one of the most outstanding of
  675. the series since "The Black Company"  .. BUT then "Water Sleeps"  UGHHHHH
  676. dont know about you guys but it had a hard time keeping my attention.. I
  677. have read the other books multiple multiple times.. but ."Water Sleeps" only
  678. twice.  I dont know why I dont care for it, I just dont..  plus it made me
  679. sad with One-Eye and Goblins fates. I have not finished "Soldiers Live", but
  680. it has not grabbed my fancy like some of the others yet..

  682. As for the untold stories of the Taken.. I do like croaker did with Lady..
  683. write my own stories :-)  (some of you may have seen my samples on this
  684. list.

  721. I like Glittering Stone quite a bit.  The first couple books of the 
  722. South, I don't like quite so much - I remember Dreams of Steel as the 
  723. low point of the series.  (Putting in the caveat here that, as a 
  724. relative Cook newbie, I've read most of the books only once.  Once 
  725. I'm done with Soldier's Live, I'm planning to set aside some time to 
  726. reread the entire series, and my opinions might well change on a 
  727. second read.)  But I felt like the series really picked up new energy 
  728. starting with _Bleak Seasons_.  I enjoyed it quite a bit.
  729.  
  730. I'm afraid I can't shed any light on the disparity in discussion time 
  731. devoted to the different parts of the series.  Since joining this 
  732. mailing list, I've mostly been looking on in bemused awe at the 
  733. detailed discussions.  A lot of people on this list have obviously 
  734. read the books many more times than I have, or have much better 
  735. memories of what they've read.  I have trouble keeping up.  There are 
  736. also a lot of questions it would just never occur to me to ask.
  737.  
  738. Maybe Glittering Stone just isn't as fertile a ground for 
  739. speculation?  (Seems unlikely, given how complex the story is.) 
  740. Maybe it just appeals to quieter folk like me?
  741.  
  742. Having said that, I think there will be some questions that I'll want 
  743. to discuss once I've finished with _Soldiers Live_.  I'm holding back 
  744. right now because some of those questions may be answered in the 
  745. book, and also because I don't want to see any spoilers yet.

  799. Maybe many of you have read the books of the north more often, but I know
  800. that I have actually read all black company books 3 times...all but Water
  801. Sleeps and Soldiers Live because they're so recent.  But still, the books of
  802. the North are a lot more interesting for me..I don't even know why.  Part of
  803. it is the culture that the company is immersed in I think.  The North is
  804. more traditional "western european fantasy" while the south is almost
  805. "middle-eastern" if that makes any sense.  I am just more familiar (and more
  806. interested in) the traditional western european type.  Also, I think the
  807. characters in the books of the North were a lot less "flat" then those of
  808. the south.  Just some thoughts.

  943. No no, I think this is one of the huge problems with the books of the south.
  944. It takes so long for anything to happen!  If he had finished his castle it
  945. probably would have taken even longer while they sat there and sieged it.

  947. worried more about keeping the plot moving along than inserting details
  948. about so and so's favorite aspect of his favorite Gunni god.....
