  5. As promised, when I saw Mr. Cook at the WorldCon, I asked him the 
  6. questions I chose from the requests you all sent me. Here are his responses:

  8. 1) News on the crime novel: He has a title (the Butcher's Apprentice) 
  9. but his agent isn't too enthusiastic about his prospects for being able 
  10. to pitch it to a publisher. IIRC, it's basically written and everything, 
  11. just waiting for his agent to to get it sold, but when (or if) that 
  12. happens is the big question...
  13.  
  14. 2) Glen's opinion about eBooks: "If someone comes up to my agent with a 
  15. truckload of money wanting to put my stuff in electronic format, I have 
  16. no problem with that whatsoever." But I didn't get the idea he was 
  17. interested in pressing the issue to any great degree. I would say, if 
  18. you want to see Glen Cook's stuff in eBook format, write to his 
  19. publishers and let them know. Tor has put a lot of other authors' stuff 
  20. out there as eBooks, and  my impression was that Glen wouldn't object if 
  21. they want to do the same for his books.

  23. 3) What's in the works: more Garrett Files books, and two more Black 
  24. Company books.
  25.  
  26. 4) What about the unpublished Dread Empire book: Glen is currently in 
  27. the process of sorting through his papers (he has several file cabinets 
  28. packed full of various papers) and he's pretty sure it's in there. He 
  29. says that as far as he recalls, he had it about 85% written and if there 
  30. is sufficient interest he would be more than happy to finish it up and 
  31. send it off to the publisher. Again, your best chance of seeing this 
  32. book in print is to write his publisher and (politely) petition them to 
  33. publish it.

  36. doctor has him on a weight-reduction program, which seems to be working

  65. It's just the last book felt like, well, the last book of a series.  It
  66. didn't seem to need anything added on...
  67. Then again, so The White Rose (book 3 of 10) so Cook can probably pull
  68. it off again...

  129. crime novels published every year, so it seems like an established
  130. author should have a decent chance of getting one published.  Did he
  131. say why his agent felt that way?  Is the market saturated?  Or is
  132. his book to far off the beaten path or something?

  173. rather, um, novel.  (He told me a year or two ago that it's set far
  174. enough into the future that he can presume a working nation-wide
  175. computer network for cops; in my estimation, that's decades away, but I
  176. don't really know when he sets it.)

  224. I guess I can understand the writer not wanting concrete details down.
  225. Still, it would make an interesting read.  There are many areas that
  226. would benefit immensely from illustration.  I can picture some of the
  227. creatures from the Plains of Fear for example, but some others just seem
  228. a little too odd to properly visualize.  Some portraits of the various
  229. members of the Black Company would be great too.  The illustration of
  230. SoulCatcher on the cover of the first book is a good example.  
  231.  
  232. Take the Limper for instance.  Wouldn't it be great to see his rise and
  233. fall in all the various incarnations he's suffered through?  That would
  234. be a very interesting piece of sketching.
  235.  
  236. And of course Charm, Oar, and other great places mentioned.

  262. agent isn't even interested in pushing it.  If he can't publish it
  263. in another year or two it might be a good opportunity to experiment
  264. with online publishing.  ;)

  308.     Well...  I guess most of the crime/sci-fi novels that I've
  309. read have been in the past or more fantasy in style.  But, it was
  310. my impression that this book is not really sci-fi at all.  The 
  311. computer network for cops could hardly be called 'futuristic'.
  312.     I think he should be marketing this book to the publishers
  313. of mysteries and/or 'standard' crime novels.  If the only thing
  314. 'sci-fi' about the book is the computer network then it would
  315. easily fit within those genres.  Many fiction books and especially
  316. movies (eg. Enemy of the State, The Net) make up variations on 
  317. technologies and still present it as "present day".

  502. intro by Eric Flint that I had printed up and he said he'd pass it on to

  532. Thanks for asking this question Brooke. Dread Empire
  533. is my personal favourite of Cook's work. It sure would
  534. be nice to see this list do a united mailing to try
  535. and get this book published. I plan on doing a letter
  536. to Tor this week. (By the way, thanks Steve for the
  537. Tor address.)

  539. I wonder if Tor has considered doing Ominbus editions
  540. of the Dread Empire. I've noticed that they've done
  541. this for early Andre Norton books (Witchworld and
  542. others) and Gordon R. Dickson (Dorsai) and both of
  543. these series were published by others and they would
  544. have had to acquire the rights for these books to do
  545. it. I'll throw this question at them in my letter. (I
  546. don't know if they'll respond or not but we'll see.)

  611. If Cook ever publishes an Atlas I'll buy it.  That said, I kind of hope
  612. I never see one.  From what Cook has said he doesn't map out his fantasy
  613. worlds in advance so it wouldn't be a case of getting someone to make an

  615. it.  If Cook is going to devote that time to something I'd prefer a new
  616. novel rather than a rehash of previous stories.

  772.     You can also write him.  I've written him a few times (a number
  773. of years ago) and did get a response (I was asking him whether he had
  774. any of his out of print books for sale).  His responses were generally
  775. form letters with a few personalized notes -- he said that he didn't
  776. really have time to personally respond to all of the letters he gets,
  777. which is understandable.
  778.     I met him at Albacon, another convention, and like Brooke I
  779. found him to be approachable.  I just tried to catch him when he wasn't
  780. busy selling books.

  919. The company - reformed in an alien demension - doesn't seem to have the
  920. same soul as the one that went north, lost itself, was broken, and
  921. reformed on its trip south.  If memory serves most of its troops are
  922. temps.

  924. Almost all the main characters we were getting attached to went with the
  925. gate house.  There are so few characters left to provide continuality.
  926. Maybe a focus on the magic users?  Toby fighting not to become a
  927. Dominator as the Lady and the two wiz-kids work to restore the damaged

  930. Then again, after reading The White Rose I couldn't predict The Silver
  931. Spike or the Books of the South, so I might be totally off here.

  948. disappointed - I've had that philophy after seeing "the movie of the
  949. year", feeling let down, and realizing that it was a nice little movie
  950. but my expectations were just too high.

  1055. as well.  I hope he can get it sold, as almost anything

  1190. Garrett books.  I don't have them at hand right now but I'm sure 
  1191. someone will give the exact details soon.  It's a pretty name,

  1216. I am new to the list. I have to admit a certain ignorance of Glenn Cook 
  1217. books. The father of my daughter, however, is a fan of them. So much so
  1218. that 
  1219. our daughter is named after one of his characters. That is why I am
  1220. posting 
  1221. to the board. I am currently trying to find out where the name Amiranda 
  1222. Starr originated from. Whether he made it up, or took it from some point
  1223. in 
  1224. history. Whatever it may be. I have attempted to do numerous online
  1225. searches 
  1226. on this. I have come up with the pages I have devoted to my daughter,
  1227. and 
  1228. quite a number of pages for people named A. Miranda. I would greatly 
  1229. appriciate it if anyone could help me shed some light on this.
