  5. Hello folks. I'm new to this fan mailing list, and I'd
  6. like to start by showing you my breakdown of the Ten
  7. original Taken and what we know about their respective
  8. demises. I'll put page references whenever possible so
  9. the hardcore storyline fans who read this can either
  10. corroborate or disprove me. Please, you don't have to
  11. go easy on the new guy   :)
  12.  
  13. Because my list is essentially one enormous spoiler,
  14. I'll do what I've seen others do in the archives I have
  15. read, in case someone who is reading this hasn't read
  16. up to "Soldiers Live". NOTE: if you've read the nine BC
  17. books and The Silver Spike, this won't spoil anything.
  18.  
  19. Spoilers below, pertaining to the deaths of the 10
  20. original Taken, and the 4 or 8 Shadowmasters.

  34. Okay, to keep it simple I'll put the Taken's name and
  35. jump right into the specifics about his / her demise,
  36. if any.
  37.  
  38. 1) Soulcatcher - Still alive as of "Soldiers Live".
  39.  
  40. 2) The Howler - Was believed to be killed when he
  41. crashed into the Tower ("The Black Company" pgs
  42. 291-292), but survived that incident. Was confirmed
  43. killed by shadows and/or Taglians in "Soldiers Live" pg
  44. 430. [See also the note below on the EIGHT
  45. Shadowmasters.]
  46.  
  47. 3) The Limper - Survived too many incidents that I can
  48. bother to count, but was finally killed in "The Silver
  49. Spike" by being boiled, and having the remains buried
  50. in a place only godlike powers could apparently access.
  51.  
  52. 4) Stormbringer - Thought to have been killed by
  53. Bonegnasher in the first novel on page 270. It was a
  54. ruse, however, and she survived to travel south to
  55. become Stormshadow, one of the Shadowmasters.
  56. Stormbringer was finally killed by Shapeshifter (who
  57. had traveled south to do exactly that) after he mauled
  58. her. She apparently was weakened by the Company Lance
  59. (when Murgen stabbed her before the mauling with
  60. Shifter) just like Howler was when Croaker stabbed
  61. Howler. I think the Lance's magical wounds disabled her
  62. and therefore helped Shifter finish her. In any case,
  63. she died atop the tower in the citadel of Dejagore in
  64. "Shadow Games". It was confirmed in "Dreams of Steel"
  65. that she and Shifter were killed there and their
  66. remains were dealt with properly. [See also the note
  67. below on the EIGHT Shadowmasters.]
  68.  
  69. 5) Shapeshifter - on page 263 in the first novel, the
  70. Captain delivers word that Shifter was lost, and that
  71. "The cirumstances were questionable...". However
  72. Shapeshifter actually survived, and sneaked south. He
  73. did this because he wanted to settle with Stormbringer
  74. (because she had a hand in killing the Hanged Man, a
  75. person that Shifter wanted to rescue, and also
  76. supposedly tried to murder Shifter himself, which you
  77. can find on page 286 in "Shadow Games"). His plan
  78. worked, and he either killed her or severely maimed her
  79. atop the citadel tower. Both of them were finished off
  80. because they were too weak to defend themselves.
  81. One-Eye sewed their orifices shut and dealt with their
  82. remains according to Lady's suggestions which she gave
  83. on page 290 in "Shadow Games".
  84.  
  85. 6) The Hanged Man - On page 227 in the first novel, we
  86. see Harden fling his giant sword in the general
  87. direction of the four Taken who he had incapacitated
  88. temporarily. Next page we learn that the sword landed
  89. through the Hanged Man's skull. He was blubbering and
  90. dying, and although clearly Shapeshifter wanted to help
  91. him, Soulcatcher and Stormbringer did not. So, the
  92. Hanged Man was not helped and allowed to die. It is
  93. very, very likely that Stormbringer dealt with the
  94. Hanged Man's remains afterward. If not, it doesn't
  95. matter, since a sword through the brain is enough to
  96. kill even the greatest sorcerer. This was mentioned
  97. before, but I apologize since I cannot remember the
  98. exact reference. Sorcerers can be beheaded and survive,
  99. correct? But the brain's actual destruction is
  100. something no sorcerer can survive. That is why the
  101. Company had Shadowspinner's head as a trophy for
  102. awhile; it was stated that the brain was removed and
  103. destroyed and therefore posed no danger. I say all this
  104. just to reinforce that the Hanged Man is dead  :)
  105.  
  106. 7) Bonegnasher - In the first novel, on page 270, we're
  107. informed that this man was killed, most likely by
  108. Stormbringer, who was herself supposed to be killed
  109. then too. Although he is a giant man, I have no trouble
  110. believing that Stormbringer could kill him. Maybe she
  111. struck him with some lightning and other magics. She
  112. could, after all, physically battle Shapeshifter
  113. himself (in the forvalaka form, no less!) and give him
  114. a run for his money. And since Bonegnasher is never
  115. mentioned again, there is no reason to believe he
  116. wasn't killed. Besides, Otto and Hagop would have
  117. reported it, if they didn't find Bonegnasher's body
  118. after they exhumed the other Taken's bodies.
  119.  
  120. 8) Nightcrawler - This character supposedly was lost to
  121. Rebel action on page 279, first novel. However! Otto
  122. and Hagop could not find his body (pg 292 "Bleak
  123. Seasons"). Which leads me to believe that Nightcrawler
  124. was not actually killed there, and was one of the 3
  125. people that were killed according to Uncle Doj. See the
  126. note below on the EIGHT Shadowmasters for much more on
  127. that.
  128.  
  129. 9) Moonbiter - Supposedly killed during internal feuds
  130. (on page 279 in the first novel), Moonbiter was lost
  131. the same day as the Faceless Man. Since we are told on
  132. that same page that Moonbiter and the Faceless Man were
  133. not killed by enemy action, it is logical that they
  134. skragged each other. [Which is why I personally believe
  135. that Moonbiter is the 3rd female Taken, since the Lady
  136. said some female Taken were planning to help the Circle
  137. because they were in service to the Dominator, and the
  138. Faceless is a "Man".] But, just like Nightcrawler, Otto
  139. and Hagop could not find her body (pg 292 "Bleak
  140. Seasons"). See the note below on the EIGHT
  141. Shadowmasters for much more on this.
  142.  
  143. 10) The Faceless Man/Nameless One - Reportedly killed
  144. during internal feuds on page 279 in the first novel.
  145. Not lost to enemy action. See Moonbiter above for more.
  146. And, just like Moonbiter and Nightcrawler, Otto and
  147. Hagop could not find his body. [See also the note below
  148. on the EIGHT Shadowmasters.]
  149.  
  150. That's my list of the Taken and their demises. Please
  151. debate any details in my writing you feel you should.
  152. But I have some more before I leave.
  153.  
  154. THE ****EIGHT**** SHADOWMASTERS.
  155. Uncle Doj says (Water Sleeps pg. 150) that Longshadow
  156. went with the Nyueng Bao pilgrims and their false key
  157. to the shadowgate. Once they got there, they
  158. encountered Shadowspinner under the name Ashutosh
  159. Yaksha "and a half-dozen other sorcerers waiting." So,
  160. that's 6 other people, plus Shadowspinner and
  161. Longshadow, which of course makes eight. He then says
  162. that "several were fugitives from [the north]". Well,
  163. look at the known list of the four Shadowmasters:
  164.  
  165. 1) Longshadow (aka Maricha Manthara Dhumraksha)
  166. 2) Shadowspinner (aka Ashutosh Yaksha)
  167. 3) Moonshadow (we know little about this guy; but
  168. Soulcatcher saw him on the Lance and disposed of him
  169. and recognized that he was NOT a Taken)
  170. 4) Stormshadow (aka Stormbringer; Taken fugitive)
  171.  
  172. Obviously, Moonshadow and Stormbringer/Stormshadow were
  173. 2 of the "half-dozen other sorcerers" that Doj
  174. mentioned. But what about the other 4? Well, Doj says
  175. that Howler was there, and was cruelly injured and
  176. fled. Which makes perfect sense, since he made a home
  177. with the swamp pirates after fleeing the shadowgate.
  178.  
  179. 5) Howler (Taken fugitive)
  180.  
  181. Now we're left with 3 other missing people. Since Otto
  182. and Hagop found no bodies for 3 certain Taken, it is
  183. logical that these three AWOL sorcerers are the missing
  184. trio.
  185.  
  186. 6) Nightcrawler (Taken fugitive)
  187. 7) Moonbiter (Taken fugitive)
  188. 8) The Faceless Man (aka the Nameless One; Taken
  189. fugitive)
  190.  
  191. There's my list of the original intended eight
  192. Shadowmasters. I've read the majority of the newer
  193. archives of these mailing lists and this topic wasn't
  194. covered afaik, so I figured I share what I know. Please
  195. tell me if you agree or not, and if you have some
  196. evidence to refute any of my stuff.

  223.     Welcome.  Thanks for the excellent analysis!  :-)  I've often
  224. wondered what happened to the Taken who had disappeared under questionable
  225. circumstances.  I haven't yet gone back to corroborate your data but it
  226. will be fun to refer to when I reread the series someday.

  258. It was a movie about the US Calvary during the Civil War. Well to make a
  259. long story short, William Holden is the Medical Officer/Surgeon in the
  260. regiment.

  262. John Wayne of course is a colonel leading the troops. After the main
  263. battle was over, Holden decides to stay with the injured troops, and as
  264. the men part, John Wayne says good bye and called him Croaker. It was
  265. something like, "Good luck, Croaker". I can't remember exactly what was
  266. said, the Croaker reference got my attention. 
  267. I've been in the military and even in my everyday life: this is only the
  268. 2nd time I've heard this term used on a doctor.

  392. I could be wrong here, but it's my impression that Croaker was a common
  393. nickname for medical officers during the US Civil War - something to do
  394. with the level of medical science being such that most injuried were
  395. taken to the doctor's tent to die.
  396. 1) It was before germ theory (let alone antibiotics) so infection was
  397. widespread and deadly.
  398. 2) The reputation of a surgeon was usually based on how fast he proform
  399. an amputation.
  400. 3) While the amputation was happening a lucky soldier was given a few
  401. drinks, while an unlucky one was stone cold sober as his arm or leg was
  402. sawed off.
  403. 4) Internal medicine was virtually unknown.
  404. 5) Blood tranfusions were rarely attempted, and since no one knew
  405. anything about blood types they were often fatal.
  406.  
  407. The net result of all this was the doctors didn't have the skills to
  408. save most of the injuried that were brought to them and (in the view of
  409. the average soldier) their treatments were more likely to kill than to
  410. cure.
  411.  
  412. Then the state of medical science improved.  Surgeons actually started
  413. to wash their hands between surgeries, they could knock you out and give
  414. you replacement blood during an operation, X-rays came along, then
  415. antibiotics, MASHs started showing up on battlefields - and doctors
  416. stopped being called croakers.

  517. barrel if they were called croaker after the stopped being used on army
  518. doctors.

  542. While searching for some old books to fill in gaps in my collection I 
  543. ran acoss the following website.  Of course I had to run a search for 
  544. Cook.  There were hundreds of Cook books listed, and while most were the 
  545. more common titles there were a fair number of the harder to find works. 
  546.  In general the prices appeard very resonable although there were a few 
  547. ridiculous prices also.   Anyways just thought I'd pass this information on.

  738. stuff, so naturally I was curious as to how the filters
  739. got offended. After you read something a million times
  740. you can't really tell the wood from the trees (or
  741. however that saying goes). I just copied and pasted:

  751. Because my list is essentially one enormous spoiler,
  752. I'll do what I've seen others do in the archives I have
  753. read, in case someone who is reading this hasn't read
  754. up to "Soldiers Live". NOTE: if you've read the nine BC
  755. books and The Silver Spike, this won't spoil anything.

  757. Spoilers below, pertaining to the deaths of the 10
  758. original Taken, and the 4 or 8 Shadowmasters.

  772. Okay, to keep it simple I'll put the Taken's name and
  773. jump right into the specifics about his / her demise,
  774. if any.
  775.  
  776. 1) Soulcatcher - Still alive as of "Soldiers Live".
  777.  
  778. 2) The Howler - Was believed to be killed when he
  779. crashed into the Tower ("The Black Company" pgs
  780. 291-292), but survived that incident. Was confirmed
  781. killed by shadows and/or Taglians in "Soldiers Live" pg
  782. 430. [See also the note below on the EIGHT
  783. Shadowmasters.]
  784.  
  785. 3) The Limper - Survived too many incidents that I can
  786. bother to count, but was finally killed in "The Silver
  787. Spike" by being boiled, and having the remains buried
  788. in a place only godlike powers could apparently access.
  789.  
  790. 4) Stormbringer - Thought to have been killed by
  791. Bonegnasher in the first novel on page 270. It was a
  792. ruse, however, and she survived to travel south to
  793. become Stormshadow, one of the Shadowmasters.
  794. Stormbringer was finally killed by Shapeshifter (who
  795. had traveled south to do exactly that) after he mauled
  796. her. She apparently was weakened by the Company Lance
  797. (when Murgen stabbed her before the mauling with
  798. Shifter) just like Howler was when Croaker stabbed
  799. Howler. I think the Lance's magical wounds disabled her
  800. and therefore helped Shifter finish her. In any case,
  801. she died atop the tower in the citadel of Dejagore in
  802. "Shadow Games". It was confirmed in "Dreams of Steel"
  803. that she and Shifter were killed there and their
  804. remains were dealt with properly. [See also the note
  805. below on the EIGHT Shadowmasters.]
  806.  
  807. 5) Shapeshifter - on page 263 in the first novel, the
  808. Captain delivers word that Shifter was lost, and that
  809. "The cirumstances were questionable...". However
  810. Shapeshifter actually survived, and sneaked south. He
  811. did this because he wanted to settle with Stormbringer
  812. (because she had a hand in killing the Hanged Man, a
  813. person that Shifter wanted to rescue, and also
  814. supposedly tried to murder Shifter himself, which you
  815. can find on page 286 in "Shadow Games"). His plan
  816. worked, and he either killed her or severely maimed her
  817. atop the citadel tower. Both of them were finished off
  818. because they were too weak to defend themselves.
  819. One-Eye sewed their orifices shut and dealt with their
  820. remains according to Lady's suggestions which she gave
  821. on page 290 in "Shadow Games".
  822.  
  823. 6) The Hanged Man - On page 227 in the first novel, we
  824. see Harden fling his giant sword in the general
  825. direction of the four Taken who he had incapacitated
  826. temporarily. Next page we learn that the sword landed
  827. through the Hanged Man's skull. He was blubbering and
  828. dying, and although clearly Shapeshifter wanted to help
  829. him, Soulcatcher and Stormbringer did not. So, the
  830. Hanged Man was not helped and allowed to die. It is
  831. very, very likely that Stormbringer dealt with the
  832. Hanged Man's remains afterward. If not, it doesn't
  833. matter, since a sword through the brain is enough to
  834. kill even the greatest sorcerer. This was mentioned
  835. before, but I apologize since I cannot remember the
  836. exact reference. Sorcerers can be beheaded and survive,
  837. correct? But the brain's actual destruction is
  838. something no sorcerer can survive. That is why the
  839. Company had Shadowspinner's head as a trophy for
  840. awhile; it was stated that the brain was removed and
  841. destroyed and therefore posed no danger. I say all this
  842. just to reinforce that the Hanged Man is dead  :)
  843.  
  844. 7) Bonegnasher - In the first novel, on page 270, we're
  845. informed that this man was killed, most likely by
  846. Stormbringer, who was herself supposed to be killed
  847. then too. Although he is a giant man, I have no trouble
  848. believing that Stormbringer could kill him. Maybe she
  849. struck him with some lightning and other magics. She
  850. could, after all, physically battle Shapeshifter
  851. himself (in the forvalaka form, no less!) and give him
  852. a run for his money. And since Bonegnasher is never
  853. mentioned again, there is no reason to believe he
  854. wasn't killed. Besides, Otto and Hagop would have
  855. reported it, if they didn't find Bonegnasher's body
  856. after they exhumed the other Taken's bodies.
  857.  
  858. 8) Nightcrawler - This character supposedly was lost to
  859. Rebel action on page 279, first novel. However! Otto
  860. and Hagop could not find his body (pg 292 "Bleak
  861. Seasons"). Which leads me to believe that Nightcrawler
  862. was not actually killed there, and was one of the 3
  863. people that were killed according to Uncle Doj. See the
  864. note below on the EIGHT Shadowmasters for much more on
  865. that.
  866.  
  867. 9) Moonbiter - Supposedly killed during internal feuds
  868. (on page 279 in the first novel), Moonbiter was lost
  869. the same day as the Faceless Man. Since we are told on
  870. that same page that Moonbiter and the Faceless Man were
  871. not killed by enemy action, it is logical that they
  872. skragged each other. [Which is why I personally believe
  873. that Moonbiter is the 3rd female Taken, since the Lady
  874. said some female Taken were planning to help the Circle
  875. because they were in service to the Dominator, and the
  876. Faceless is a "Man".] But, just like Nightcrawler, Otto
  877. and Hagop could not find her body (pg 292 "Bleak
  878. Seasons"). See the note below on the EIGHT
  879. Shadowmasters for much more on this.
  880.  
  881. 10) The Faceless Man/Nameless One - Reportedly killed
  882. during internal feuds on page 279 in the first novel.
  883. Not lost to enemy action. See Moonbiter above for more.
  884. And, just like Moonbiter and Nightcrawler, Otto and
  885. Hagop could not find his body. [See also the note below
  886. on the EIGHT Shadowmasters.]

  888. That's my list of the Taken and their demises. Please
  889. debate any details in my writing you feel you should.
  890. But I have some more before I leave.
  891.  
  892. THE ****EIGHT**** SHADOWMASTERS.
  893. Uncle Doj says (Water Sleeps pg. 150) that Longshadow
  894. went with the Nyueng Bao pilgrims and their false key
  895. to the shadowgate. Once they got there, they
  896. encountered Shadowspinner under the name Ashutosh
  897. Yaksha "and a half-dozen other sorcerers waiting." So,
  898. that's 6 other people, plus Shadowspinner and
  899. Longshadow, which of course makes eight. He then says
  900. that "several were fugitives from [the north]". Well,
  901. look at the known list of the four Shadowmasters:
  902.  
  903. 1) Longshadow (aka Maricha Manthara Dhumraksha)
  904. 2) Shadowspinner (aka Ashutosh Yaksha)
  905. 3) Moonshadow (we know little about this guy; but
  906. Soulcatcher saw him on the Lance and disposed of him
  907. and recognized that he was NOT a Taken)
  908. 4) Stormshadow (aka Stormbringer; Taken fugitive)
  909.  
  910. Obviously, Moonshadow and Stormbringer/Stormshadow were
  911. 2 of the "half-dozen other sorcerers" that Doj
  912. mentioned. But what about the other 4? Well, Doj says
  913. that Howler was there, and was cruelly injured and
  914. fled. Which makes perfect sense, since he made a home
  915. with the swamp pirates after fleeing the shadowgate.
  916.  
  917. 5) Howler (Taken fugitive)
  918.  
  919. Now we're left with 3 other missing people. Since Otto
  920. and Hagop found no bodies for 3 certain Taken, it is
  921. logical that these three AWOL sorcerers are the missing
  922. trio.
  923.  
  924. 6) Nightcrawler (Taken fugitive)
  925. 7) Moonbiter (Taken fugitive)
  926. 8) The Faceless Man (aka the Nameless One; Taken
  927. fugitive)
  928.  
  929. There's my list of the original intended eight
  930. Shadowmasters. I've read the majority of the newer
  931. archives of these mailing lists and this topic wasn't
  932. covered afaik, so I figured I share what I know. Please
  933. tell me if you agree or not, and if you have some
  934. evidence to refute any of my stuff.

  961. I finally figured out why some of the email filters were set off by my 
  962. analysis: I used the word you get when you combine the word hard and the word 
  963. core (I'm not typing it outright again since it will only set off flags once 
  964. more in those filters).

  966. I used it as an adjective to describe fellow Black Company storyline fans who 
  967. would want to examine my breakdown and find errors.
  968.  
  969. Of course you can't blame email filters since they cannot examine the actual 
  970. context of a word's usage (afaik, anyway).
  971.  
  972. I found a few minor issues in my original post, here they are for the heck of 
  973. it: 
  974. 1. When I noted that Harden tossed his sword "in the general direction of the 
  975. four Taken who he had incapacitated temporarily" it should have been "three 
  976. Taken". He had used some kind of spell which froze Catcher, Bringer, and the 
  977. Hanged Man. The fourth Taken on the scene, Shifter, wasn't frozen. I forgot 
  978. that detail while looking it over for errors.
  979. 2. I spelled "circumstances" wrong when I quoted the Captain.
  980. 3. I forgot to emphasize that Uncle Doj said 3 would-be Shadowmasters were 
  981. killed before Longshadow closed the shadowgate with the power of his name. 
  982. And that those three were logically the last three on my list of the eight 
  983. Shadowmasters.
  984.  
  985. I probably missed other errors; if you find them please let us know. I'd hate 
  986. to be spreading misinformation, however minor it is  :)
  987.

  1034. filter and you read email on Unix then check out Spam Assassin at
  1035. http://www.spamassassin.org/.  I use it in conjunction with procmail
  1036. and it works very well.  I've reduced my spam from 35+ messages per day
  1037. to less than 1.  It rates each mail message based on a whole bunch of
  1038. criteria and only if the message is above a certain threshold does it
  1039. mark it as spam.  Things like the above mentioned word would not by
  1040. itself mark it as spam.  I shunt the mail marked as spam to a junk
  1041. folder and occasionally check it.
  1042.     I did have to put in some procmail rules to make sure that
  1043. I get all of my mailing lists since some of them have advertising but
  1044. since I've done that it hasn't had a single false positive.
  1045.     Spam Assassin for Unix is free and there is a non-free Windows
  1046. version for Outlook 2000/XP with a 14-day free trial made by another company:

  1382. Penguin Putnam publishes Berkley, which was the
  1383. imprint for the first Dread Empire trilogy, but they
  1384. don't have anything like the Baen free library. Too
  1385. bad, really. I guess this may lead us to once again
  1386. dream of a time when all of Mr. Cook's works are
  1387. available on Print on Demand or in an e-book format.

  1706. rather than giving the big picture. I happen to think that 'She is the 
  1707. Darkness' is one of the best books in the series precisely because of the 
  1708. style - I was most impressed by the way he was able to move backwards and 
  1709. forwards, and in the way he manages the description of the one night when 
  1710. Shadowgate is opened and Soulcatcher makes her takeover bid. But was Glen 
  1711. dissatisfied himself with the style of the book when he wrote this, and did 
  1712. he turn to a new narrator in Water Sleeps and back to the old style of 
  1713. interweaving chapters partly because of this, or just because that's where 
  1714. the narrative took him?

  2637. From past Q/As asked at cons and posted here Cook seems to be the type
  2638. of author who makes it up as he needs as opposed to mapping out the
  2639. world before beginning to write - at least with the Black Company.  He's
  2640. explained some inconsistencies in the books by having narrators say
  2641. distances were estimates and [if memory serves] that 3 different systems
  2642. of messuring distances were used - all roughly translated into one
  2643. system.  That type of style doesn't lend itself well to concrete maps or
  2644. any kind of atlas.
  2645.  
  2646. But that's just my opinion - if Cook can make one I'd buy it.

  2672. I found that site, and near the end of the bibliography is the entry:
  2673. The Swap Academy (1970) (writing as [the aka name])
  2674.  
  2675. The Swap Academy was Cook's first book - one he wrote mainly to see if
  2676. he could write.  It's a porn novel, one he used a pen name for.  While
  2677. doesn't brag about that book neither does he deny he wrote it.
  2678.  
  2679. Based on the site I'd say his name is Glen Cook (or that's the name he
  2680. always writes under) and he used a pen name (the a.k.a.) on one book.
