  191. on the nuke tho, possibly the idea was to use up the last of the war 
  192. machines. The other option was that the war had become ritual sacrifice 
  193. by that point. From Cook, either is likely.

  293. I've got the feeling that Glory Mooncalled is an assumed name, or a name
  294. given to it's holder by a less advanced people (like the centaurs?). 
  295. Remember that the general switched sides after he was backstabbed, maybe
  296. he renounced his name when that happened?

  298. Glory - well, he's a great general and earns lots of glory.
  299. Mooncalled - Called by the spirits of the moon?  The gods of the moon? 
  300. The moon as a symbol of change? This is why I think it's a name from a
  301. less advanced people; I can see some tribe somewhere saying the general
  302. is mooncalled and it sticking.
  303.  
  304. Maybe at one time he was General Fred Common, Holder of Glory and
  305. declared Mooncalled by the Great Centaur Council and after he switched
  306. sides decided he didn't want to deal with relatives of anyone that
  307. General Fred Common had killed so just used his titles?
  308. Or maybe it's a warname - he is a merc and might not tales of his
  309. exploits to travel home.  Since few (except his loyal troops) knew what
  310. he looked like if he had to drop from sight he could hide by using his
  311. real name and avoid truth spells that way.

  313. Or maybe his parents (Mr. and Mrs. Mooncalled) just wanted to inspire
  314. him to seek Glory and gave him the name the way people used to use
  315. virture names like Hope, Faith, Patience, etc?  I don't think there's
  316. anything in any of the books that explains it.

  318. As for descriptive names - I seem to remember a few that were in other
  319. languages.  "Dawn's Mercy/Madness" comes to mind.

  404. That's what I thought.  There was a bit in one of the latter books (in 
  405. which Garrett is tossed into the mental ward) commenting on the practice
  406. of taking such names.

  445. They are chronological and really blend well together in order. The next
  446. book is usually always set-up pretty extensively in the book before it. Also
  447. all the secondary character arcs span 2-3+ books, so you'll miss out on
  448. that.

  607. I agree 98% with what you said, BUT (and this is a big but for me) I'm not
  608. sure if the cross-cross-genre (a fantasy-mystery-sci-fi experience) thing
  609. really worked for me. I think Cook handled it about as deftly as you can,
  610. but these are tricky waters.
  611.  
  612. The whole joy of of these novels for me is the cynical, gritty look at life
  613. in a fantasy world - and the MYSTERY that unfolds. Now, while a saucer full
  614. of Greys WOULD be a mystery to Garrett, it's not really a mystery to me. And
  615. I am always the last person to "get" the mystery plot. Maybe this is because
  616. I've read a lot more Sci-Fi, but really...
  617.  
  618. For that reason alone, the enjoyment I normally get out of these books was a
  619. bit diminished.
  620.  
  621. However, I did really enjoy the unexpected developments of the plot. I'm all
  622. for banging aliens, and the sex scenes were a good reversal for the usual
  623. anal-probe stereotype. Also a good flop on the Mars Needs Women trope. And
  624. that out of all that super alien technology revealed to them, they get the
  625. pencil and the tricycle. Perfect! [and advanced gearing! this is alluded to
  626. and could rally pave the way in this world for a lot of technological
  627. developments, but that's really another post]
  628.  
  629. Silver Elves aside, the Pular plotline was brilliantly executed and
  630. memorable. 
  631.  
  632. If there is only one more book, Cook really does have to tie up a bunch of
  633. plotlines around whatever main plot the next one's going to be. 1) the whole
  634. Secret Police thread is probably going to come to a head around Chodo's
  635. party or something similar. And that should also wrap the Belinda thread
  636. too. 2) in order for Garrett and Tinnie to really cement their relationship,
  637. she's going to be put in Jeopardy again. 3) I'm not sure what's going to
  638. happen to Morley, but I'd guess he will probably legitimize himself more.
  639.  
  640. A really dark conclusion would probably kill off some of the main

  647. time passes and Garrett ages like the Hardy Boys- or any other series
  648. character.

  650. I find this choice rather odd though, as each book is not interchangeable,
  651. but follows a strict order.

  654. (he's rendered unconscious at least 3 times a book- another holdover from

  840. I had a few problems with the sci-fi twist also, but got in the spirit of
  841. the thing, since Pular Singe was such a sweet literary tidbit. I'm hoping
  842. that Cook will rethink the ending the series since there has been a lot
  843. of interest.  I'm hoping that is the explanation of why there is almost
  844. too much to be resolved in one book.

  846. Like the unknown and uninvolved Katie.  Usually when Cook introduces one
  847. of Garret's babes, she tends to have a  major contribution to the plot. 
  848. Since she in no way influences the mystery or outcome, he must be saving
  849. her for the next one. Tinnie, Maya, Belinda, even Linda Lee figured in
  850. immediately, at least peripherally. Katie seemed to have nothing to do
  851. with the plot.
