Thought I'd share a few things. (I don't have my notes right here with me right now, so I may issue an addendum to this note when I locate them.) On the future of Dread Empire series: This sold very poorly except for the two latest ones in the chronical ("Ill Fate Marshaling" and "Reap the East Wind", I think). Glen is very concerned about the fact that he left things in media res (a cliff-hanger), but he's sceptical that his agent will find a publisher for continuance of the series. He will, however, talk to his agent about this in the near future. On the future of the Black Company series: "Glittering Stone" was envisioned as a single 4-volume (million-word!) "book", and it was, indeed, intended as the capstone and finisher of the BC series. However, this series is by far his best-selling one (the first volume still in press, 15 years later!), and his agent is certain to try to get him to write some more volumes. (More on that in a separate spoiler note.) Looks likely. On the Garrett series: There's another book in the pipeline (i.e., due out soon). Present work: He's 8 months into a Really Big crime novel--no fantasy, not even SF (save that it's sufficiently far into the future that cop stations have routine access to networked computers; Glen says 2005, but I have my doubts...). His agent is Really Upset that he's "wasting" his time with such a low-profit item; but that's the advantage of being able to retire: He can afford to write what he wants to! On the line, "Soldiers live. And wonder why.": Glen says this is a line from an unpublished(?) poem on the Vietnam war; he heard it somewhere (TV show? I'm not sure), and it stuck in his head. Survivor guilt, of course: What he says really is the feeling that a grunt gets after a bad fire-fight, assuming he's there to get a feeling. On background of the Black Company: Glen originally intended the cultural background (for the Books of the North) to be something Mid-Eastern. But deadlines got in the way, so he went with that he knew, a European feel. For the Books of the South, he became interested in Hindu mythology (I think unrelated to his fiction writing), with its mulitple namings for many deities, so he decided to incorporate that. On the BC as corporate protagonist: That's the way he envisioned it all along. On novel writing: He usually has some central idea well in mind before he begins--perhaps a crucial scene or some specific development. He then starts at the beginning, knowing part of where he's got to go along the way. I got the distinct impression that he fully expects to be writing something along these lines (after his new crime novel is done), but that he hasn't yet solidified exactly which direction he wants to go in. I just started the second book, 'A Clash of Kings' and finished the first book, 'A Game of Thrones' recently. I'd recommend reading it as well. It's set to be a six book series (the third book just came out). I noticed some mild similarities with the Black Company.. * * * * Possible Spoilers * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The defenders of the Wall in the farthest northern reaches of the Seven Kingdoms is an order by the name of the Night's Watch. They where all black and give up their past lives when they join. They can never leave. No sex, wifes, children. Of course certain members still visit whores. The other members of the Night's Watch are like brothers, their only family now. A majority of the Watch are not the nicest or the most law-abiding citizens either. It shares some similarities with the Black Company. And on pg. 495 of 'A Game of Thrones': "Yet men die," she said. "Jhogo told me. Some of the traders have eunuchs with them, huge men who strangle thieves with wisps of silk. That way no blood is shed and the gods are not angered." Sounds like the Deceivers with their rumels. And there is a comet. Every possible side interepts it as a sign (good or bad) directed at them. Similar to the comet in the first three(?) books of the BC. I think Cook has the better of it, in that he concentrates almost wholly on the soldiers' points of view (though including high officers), where Martin expends many scenes among European-style royalty--thrones and castles, the nobly born--as well as the seamier side of life. But what I said above about Cook is really applicable only to the Black Company series. Maybe its worthwhile making comparison with, say, his Dread Empire series. The later books in that series ("Reap the East Wind", "An Ill Fate Marshalling") also have a heavily realistic feel to them, I think; and they are the best of that series, in my opinion. They, too, focus on war, though politics and diplomacy are important as well. But I wouldn't call them gritty. Any other opinions on Dread Empire (especially the last books) as compared to Black Company? Is there similarity or not? If there is, is that what makes the DE books good? I thought a bigger deal would be made of it than it turned out to be. Another potential Cook storyline that there is not time to follow up on. And I don't know why I didn't latch on to it until just now, but the Krekelen were recycled in the Garrett books. Guess there was too much time between reading Dragon and reading the relevant Garrett stuff. One of the latest Garrett books (the latest one, I think) deals with shapeshifters that are telepathic, smarter in groups and dumber when separated, and not altogether friendly. Very parasitic creatures, killing influential people and taking their stuff, etc. DG BTW to Eric: what is the list etiquette on book discussions and spoilers? Kali (feminine form of Sanskrit kala,"time" or "dark"), consort of the Hindu god Shiva in her manifestation of the power of time. A destructive mother goddess, Kali is frequently depicted as a black, laughing, naked hag with blood-stained teeth, a protruding tongue, and a garland of human skulls. She usually has four arms: One hand holds a sword, the second holds a severed human head, the third is believed by her devotees to be removing fear, and the fourth is often interpreted as granting bliss. Kali-omnipotent, absolute, and all-pervasive-is beyond fear and finite existence and is therefore believed to be able to protect her devotees against fear and to give them limitless peace. Finally, as absolute night, devouring all that exists, she is sometimes depicted as standing on the corpse of Shiva, which, like the garland of skulls, symbolizes the remains of finite existence. Kali's worshipers purportedly appeased her in the past with human sacrifices; today she is propitiated with the blood of mammals. Under the title Bhavani, she was invoked by the secret brotherhood of murderers called Thugs. The city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) received its name from Kali; Calcutta is the Anglicized form of Kalighata, the name of a large temple dedicated to Kali. Thugs (from Sanskrit sthag,"conceal" or "deceive"), former secret organization of robbers in India, who always strangled their victims. Devotees of the goddess Kali, they regarded their activities as religious rituals; new members were initiated in an elaborate ceremony, and they worshiped, as a symbol of the goddess, the pickax with which they dug the graves of their victims. Included in their ranks were many Brahmins and respectable businessmen. In October, they would meet in bands of from 10 to 200 and set out on the highways, where they would set upon wealthy travelers, strangle them with a cloth, distribute the booty, and flee. A portion of the booty was always presented as an offering to the goddess in one of her temples. Thugs arose in northern India before the Muslim conquest in the 12th century AD and thrived, with extraordinary immunity from prosecution under Hindu law, until 1829, when Lord William Bentinck, the British governor-general of India, began to investigate the organization, perhaps because of thugee activity directed against British soldiers and government officials. The campaign against the Thugs, directed by Sir W. H. Sleeman, was remarkably successful. Kali-omnipotent, absolute, and all-pervasive-is beyond fear and finite existence and is therefore believed to be able to protect her devotees against fear and to give them limitless peace. Finally, as absolute night, devouring all that exists, she is sometimes depicted as standing on the corpse of Shiva, which, like the garland of skulls, symbolizes the remains of finite existence. Kali's worshipers purportedly appeased her in the past with human sacrifices; today she is propitiated with the blood of mammals. Under the title Bhavani, she was invoked by the secret brotherhood of murderers called Thugs. The city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) received its name from Kali; Calcutta is the Anglicized form of Kalighata, the name of a large temple dedicated to Kali. Thugs (from Sanskrit sthag,"conceal" or "deceive"), former secret organization of robbers in India, who always strangled their victims. Devotees of the goddess Kali, they regarded their activities as religious rituals; new members were initiated in an elaborate ceremony, and they worshiped, as a symbol of the goddess, the pickax with which they dug the graves of their victims. Included in their ranks were many Brahmins and respectable businessmen. In October, they would meet in bands of from 10 to 200 and set out on the highways, where they would set upon wealthy travelers, strangle them with a cloth, distribute the booty, and flee. A portion of the booty was always presented as an offering to the goddess in one of her temples. Thugs arose in northern India before the Muslim conquest in the 12th century AD and thrived, with extraordinary immunity from prosecution under Hindu law, until 1829, when Lord William Bentinck, the British governor-general of India, began to investigate the organization, perhaps because of thugee activity directed against British soldiers and government officials. The campaign against the Thugs, directed by Sir W. H. Sleeman, was remarkably successful. It was a fairly small but fun Con. We got to chat with him for a few minutes while he was at his dealer table. He's a very friendly person and was nice to talk with. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask him a couple of the questions that people had mentioned on here. Here is what I did learn: - Glen said that all the Black Company books will be released by the SFBC, including the books of the south (though he wasn't sure when they were all coming out). - Glen did not have any copies of _October's Baby_ (sorry Amy). He said he hasn't seen any since early this year. - He said that he was about 700 pages into the non-sci-fi book that he's writing. It's a thriller/mystery about a couple of serial killers. He expects to write another couple hundred pages on it. - As others have mentioned here, a Garrett book has been sent to the publisher. He expects to write more of them. - He was selling books at his own table in the dealer room. He said that he's been doing that since 1982 or so. He goes to around 15-20 conventions per year to sell books. He has a big truck to haul around all his books when he goes to the conventions. Since AlbaCon was so far (in Schenectady, NY) he only brought a minivan full of books. He buys the books that he sells through wholesale dealers, mainly from one which is very close to his house. - He said that he felt that _Soldiers Live_ wrapped up the Black Company series. But, it's possible that he'll return to that universe since he's getting pressure from his agent and editor. He had no plans or ideas for a new one at the moment. - Glen was interviewed by David Hartwell at the AlbaCon "extravaganza". He talked about how he first got started writing. He used to work for GM in the late '60s. His job at that time was "sitting waiting for a phone to ring 11 hours per day." Since it didn't ring very often, he read a ton of books. After a while he had read most of the "good" sci-fi and was reading the bottom of the barrel. He said to himself, "I can do better than this." He got out the company typewriter and stationary and started writing. A couple years later he published his first book. - One of the first books that he wrote was a "Tolkien ripoff" which was 1800 pages and was "terrible". Only one other person ever read it. He doesn't plan on doing anything with it. - He talked a bit about his experience at Clarion too. That's about all I can remember. I have to agree somewhat. I also thought that there were a bit too many characters introduced initially. I really found this interesting in that I really enjoyed the story, wanted to know what would happen next, and wasn't really pulling for one side or the other (although I was probably leaning towards the Guardships...). Cook almost always requires his readers to pay close attention, especially at first as the characters live their lives in the way they always did even before the reader came along. Sometimes the background becomes clear through the characters actions or dialogue but it usually in a way that is moving the story forward rather the giving expostion. And sometimes the background remains a mystery. It is often somewhat confusing but I think there is power in that style as well. You end up knowing the characters "as they are" rather than as instruments that tell a story. Also, it gives a lot of satisfaction as you figure out what's going on. I've come to enjoy that style very much. Dragon Never Sleeps is one of my favorites, but it does throw you to the wolves at first. You have to accept that you're not going to remember every character after the first time you meet them. But by the end you've come to know most of them very well and you're totally immersed in the story. It is also discoveraging. Costs of converting old paper books to e-books is thought to be several thousand dollars. Publishers don't see any money in e-books. In addition, buyer resistance is thought to be high. Lee Childs Electronic Books Uncertain Prize The Economist, October 21, 2000, page 72-73. A new literary prize will be awarded at the Frankfurt book fair on October 20th: $100,000 for the best book to be published in electronic form. By the standards of book prizes this is big indeed, and is bound to win attention of scribblers everywhere. And yet, because the prize is being awarded for the literary content of the book, not for its electronic virtues, it seems odd that the criteria for entry should be the method of delivery=97until you look at who is putting up the cash for the prize. Its backers are the computer software companies, such as Microsoft and Adobe, that are trying to prod publishers into getting the e-books business off the ground. The business faces the usual chicken-and-egg problem that always confronts new devices for delivering content=97from televisions to today=92= s DVDS. Consumers are not going to buy the device unless the content is available; and it is not worth producing the content until consumers have bought lots of devices. As a result, there are probably fewer that 1,000 titles now available for downloading from electronic bookshops, and probably no more than 20,000 of the reading devices=97the Rocket eBoo= k and the Softbook reader=97on consumers=92 laps. Hence the computer firms= =92 willingness to finance a fat e-book prize. They want to give publishers an incentive to digitize more of their books, in order to boast the market for reading software and devices. Some big companies are spending serious money. The three main competitors in the software=96and-devices business are Gemstar, which produces electronic programme guides for digital television; Adobe, a software company; and Microsoft. Gemstar believes there will be a market for specific book-like electronic devices; Adobe and Microsoft think that the market is in software to make books easier to read, which will be used on multi-purpose computers. In January, Gemstar bought the two companies that make devices for reading ebooks, Nuvomedia and Softbook Press, both of which were struggling. Those companies=92 Rocket eBook and Softbook brands have now been abandoned, but the two second-generation devices, made under license by Thomson Multimedia and launched earlier this month, the black-and-white REB 1100 ($300) and the full-colour REB 1200 ($700), are descendants of those earlier models. Gemstar is offering an end-to-end solution: reading devices, software and a library of compatible e-books. Microsoft and Adobe are skeptical about the market for electronic-book devices. =93We just don=92t think customers in large numbers are going t= o be interested in spending that sort of money on dedicated hardware,=94 says Mario Juarez, Microsoft=92s marketing manager for e-books. Microsof= t and Adobe both make software that can be used on PCS and laptops; Microsoft=92s Reader software, which was launched in August, comes pre-shipped on the PocketPC, Microsoft=92s version of the Palm Pilot. Adobe is working on producing a version for hand-held computers. Retailers are becoming interested, too. Barnesandnoble.com has established an online e-bookstore, and in August Amazon, the largest online retailer, announced that it was planning to do the same, offering e-books using Microsoft software. Publishers are proving harder to excite. They worry that e-books could prove expensive and complicated to create. They put the cost of translating a previously published paper book into electronic form at up to several thousand dollars. They also see new difficulties arising, such as the need to renegotiate agreements with authors. But so far, they do not see any new revenues. Nobody is giving out figures on how much consumers are actually spending on those few books that are available for commercial download, but the sums are reckoned to be tiny. That may be because publishers have set prices so high, despite the fact the manufacturing and distribution costs of e-books, compared with paper versions, are almost negligible. In addition, to the Frankfurt prize, the software people say, they are doing a lot to help publishers. Microsoft, for instance, has been running advertisements in the New Yorker, promoting particular e-books. Mr. Juarez expects some big announcements from =93content providers=94 th= is autumn. But, even if the devices, the software, and the content are all available, industry fold accept that consumer resistance will be hard to overcome=97much harder, for instance, than persuading people to buy music online. Young people take to new technologies easily, but book readers tend to be older people who are not enthusiastic buyers of gadgets. Further, bookish people have an emotional relationship with the titles on their shelves. They regard crisp paper between cardboard covers as more than a content-delivery device.
