Nah. After doing the last one at 1600x1200, why would I be shy
of generating this one? Images like this remind me of the good
old days.

Super!
But I can't go into the 'image coordinates' ('z' screen then 'F6') in order
to manually change the center-mag values.. Why?

that's right! Sorry, I forgot to explain the way to make a .ifs running.

These are the same ones that get used for the FOTD web pages I create.
I believe that Scott uses the shorter discussion version from the
FractInt List.

I had thought of that as well, but wondered about legal ramifications of
selling a CD with a FREEWARE product on it. I do know that other CDs I
have bought include such free programs in a separate directory, but
still not sure about how many people involved with FractInt would need
to be contacted for their permission.

Personally, I think some of those "extras" are what make the FOTDs very
interesting, and down to earth (so to speak).

About 1,550 and growing. :-)

Yep, no problems there. Starting with the Fractal-Art List, to the
FractInt List, and on to the PhiloFractal List.

That is one reason I suggested using the web pages already established.
Everything is put together and pretty much ready to go. It should not
take that much "tweaking" to finalize something workable for a CD-ROM.
Sincerely,

I would be most interested in a CD of Fractal of the

for it.

I am afraid that there are at least a couple more "foolhardy"

us:

The Philofractal version of the FOTD for Sep 02 will
be posted in a few hours. It will have extra material.
I posted the Fractint version earlier to give Paul and
Scott a chance to render the unusually slow image.

That's because of the arbitrary precision math being used. Tim didn't
implement the 'F6' option when he added the ap-math routines. This is
probably due to having to be able to read arbitrarily large numbers from an
arbitrarily large piece of screen real estate and put it into an arbitrarily
large buffer so it can be converted into the internal format used by
Fractint. But, this is only a guess. Tim would have a better answer.

Dear All,
On the subject of Jim's pars, I'm glad to say that I have recently updated
the par/frm collections on my website
http://www.les.stclair.btinternet.co.uk/fractals/pars.htm
All FOTD's since 12th April '97 until 31st Aug.'01 are there.
A word of warning, some of Jim's pars use the Developer's version of
Fractint, so they won't render properly with the current v.20
There's a link to the Developer's version on the same page as the pars.

Well, a CD certainly appears do-able, and for a variety of reasons, less
complicated than a book at present (although I'll bet you a nickel that
upon seing it in CD format, a major publisher will go to Jim and propose
putting it in book form - - then maybe all you guys can recover some of
your "sweat equity".)

A further benefit of producing Jim's FotD's in CD format now, is that
it can be done in such a manner that those who contribute most (JaM, PNL,
Scott, Tim) can show all of the rest of us how it is possible - by mutual
agreement and cooperation - to deal with the "ownership"/ "licensure" issues
which have been previously been "discussed" on this site ad nauseam
by the peanut gallery.

The (temporary) loss of the 35 or so files mentioned by PNL is the kind
of potential archiving disaster (what if there had been no PNL?) I was
talking about yesterday unless the FotD's are committed to some sort of
widely-distributable "permanent" medium before we all turn 64.

Congrats to you guys (Jim, Paul, Scott, Tim, others) for being wiling
to at least discuss doing all the rest of us such a courtesy, and as always,
in your usual professional manner. I find the prospect of having an indexed
CD of all 1550 or so of Jim's FotD's, their accompanying PARS and "Commentary
by Muth" really exciting.

And perhaps the Fractal Cats - if not given their due as Co-authors
- - could even be induced (a few extra treats here, a can of tuna there)
to contribute their own Introduction with some personal remembrances of
the "lean years" when Jim was just a pup himself . . . .

Even though it is possible, the addition of the FractInt software (I
assume both the executable and source) would most likely require some
form of statement regarding it's free distribution. And that the sales
price of the CD is to cover production and shipping only (pricing would
vary considering destination).
Any pricing too high, which caused a profit, might not be acceptable by
the Stone Soup Group's philosophy. Maybe Tim Wegner will step in and
comment on this??

Another item to think about, are the many FOTDs that were posted on the
Usenet Newsgroups (and discussed within the FOTD) that are in the JPEG
file format. Many of these were enhanced in some manner to alter the
normal GIF output from FractInt, so the question arises, does the CD
include the one posted and discussed, or the plain GIF, or maybe both
versions??

All valid concerns.

I'm just pleased they're beng discussed.

Perhaps (no doubt, in fact), there are Attorneys among the downloaders
who - having remained stealthily silent so far - might admit their existence
(if only in private to JAM, PNL, et. al.) - provide some informed advise/counsel
on the Intellectual Property and other legal issues involved. [After, of
course, the principals involved sign the requisite "NonDisclosure Of The
Attorney's Identity" Agreements . . . . .]

Well, there is one - it's in the Fractint documentation and goes
"
Fractint is freeware. The copyright is retained by the Stone Soup Group.

It's enough to contact me or Jonathan for this sort of permission.
A FOTD CD would be nice thing to make available.
We have generally allowed Fractint to be included with CDs by artists who have been
contributors to the fractint community. There was a time when we had our own publishing
projects, and then we had be more careful. These days there is less reason than ever for us to
withold this sort of permission, but it is important to ask us first. The main thing is to not
misrepresnt the CD as selling the software - it should be clear that fractint itself is free and
included on the CD as a convenience.

I would dearly love to change the license. But it is very hard to do. We'd have to contact all sorts
of people we haven't heard from in ten years.
While I doubt any past developers would object, my experience is that one should be careful in
these matters.
We could do a substantial rewrite and make the license GPL or one of the other licenses. There
is no real need that I can see to change the license for the DOS version which is at the end of
life. A future version (new platform) should have a new license.
At the present time (with the present license) permission should be gotten from us to put fractint
on a CD. If we GPL'd fractint, this would become unnecessary. As I said in another message,
these days we have little reason to refuse such a request.
Tim
