Subject: (fractint) Rudy Rucker and Horned Sphere
I have a few questions involving Rudy Rucker and the Horned Sphere. First, I read a book
called "the Fourth Dimension." It has some interesting philosphical ideas such as
predestination and the meaning of the universe. His idea of infinite dimensions reminds
me of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos," where the writer speculates if there are an infinite
regression of universes within universes. (The Edge of Forever, Cosmos) Maybe the
Universe is fractal and the Horned sphere (which I think is a fractal) can exist. What do
you think? -Hugo Lowenstein

Subject: (fractint) Configuring sound card (Was - Music fractals query)
Hi Robin,
Things have moved on a little since my last post. I've had some advice
from other NG subscribers. This post gives the latest state-of play.
I really could use some more of your assistance on this as nothing
anyone
else has suggested has moved me much further forward. I'm now getting
overloaded with info - some of it conflicting!
Below is a copy of my latest response to another NG. You should find it
self-explanatory. Anything you can add to resolve some of my queries
would be welcomed.

"Thanks for the response - but could I trouble you a little further,
please?

I had already done this but it loads the following line into config.sys
DEVICE=C:\ESS\ES1868.COM /A:0 /I:0.
Now, I do not have this file ES1868.com, consequently when booting
an error message occurs. I have been unable to find such a file, or any
mention of it anywhere on the web. Another correspondent suggested
that
the config.sys entry should be deleted. Either way, I still get no
sound!

I have this file but it is empty. What do I _actually_ have to enter -
SET BLASTER=A240,I5,D1,T4,P330 ? Or something else?
> The init file itself is usually called at bootup from the config.sys

What should this entry be, please? The one referred to above or
something else?

I think I got that. If I want to start in dos from boot up and then
access Fractint20, I will have to run c:\windows\dosstart.bat before
the sound card will work? I think I can live without that as
Fractint20
runs perfectly well when invoked from within it's own folder (except for
the problem with the sound card).

Another query here. The esscfg.exe writes the MPU-401 ref as "B"330.
All the text I have read and when running SET from MSDOS indicates
"P"330. Which is correct?

I obtained the values from devices in control panel, eg A240 instead of
the recommended A220 as this is the value assigned by windows setup.
Should I have done something differently?
> That should get you on your way!
I wish!!!! Never had much call for all this DOS stuff before - bit out
of my depth, but I'm determined to crack this however long it takes.
Thanks for your help so far."

My thanks to all who offered suggestions. The sound card now works OK
in DOS and MSDOS, by running the esscfg.exe file from
http://www.esstech.com , but _not_ fiddling with the default settings.
It seems that, not for the first time, I was the main cause of the
problem!
Thanks once again

Use the Source, Luke...
or, reverse engineer. Notice that it says 768 characters. That is exactly
three times 256 the number of colors. It seems, then, that it stores each
color as a three character code. What's more, each character probably
represents one component, red, green, and blue. I would suggest making
a palette in Fractint that has the first 64 colors greys from black to
white, then black to red, black to green, and black to blue. Then save it
in a par file and see what comes out. In fact I did it myself:
test {
reset=1930 type=mandel center-mag=-0.5/0/0.6666667 params=0/0
float=y maxiter=5000 inside=0 logmap=yes periodicity=0
colors=000<62>zzzzzzzyy<61>z00000<62>0z0000<62>00z
}
Well, this is a surprise. Definitely not 768 characters. But, perhaps
straight sequences of colors get compressed with an interpolation thing.
The 61 and 62 stuff looks like it might mean "the 62 colors between can be
interpolated"...
So, I make another palette, same as before but alternating colors: one
from the greys, one from the reds, one from the greens, one from the blues...
test {
reset=1930 type=mandel center-mag=-0.5/0/0.6666667 params=0/0
float=y maxiter=5000 inside=0 logmap=yes periodicity=0
colors=000<2>00011110001000122220002000233330003000344440004000455550005\

000vwwww000w000wxxxx000x000xyyyy000y000yzzzz000z000z
}
Now obviously \ is used to break lines longer than 80 characters, because
it only appears at the ends of split lines.
Note the first part: 000<2>000. The first four colors were black. So, 000
is black. The 2 must be to interpolate the four from the first and last. I
was right.
At the end, the last 12 characters are: zzzz000z000z
zzz
z00
0z0
00z
The colors were: white, red, green, blue.
So, I was right about one character for one RGB value. And they are in the
order: red, green, blue. And 0 means zero, and z means 64.
In order from 0 to 64, the letter codes are:
0-9 zero to nine
A-Z ten to 36
_ 37
` 38 (reverse apostrophe typically found with tilde (~))
a-z 39-64
xxx<12>yyy means that after color xxx there are twelve more colors, then
color yyy, and the twelve are continuous gradations from xxx to yyy, so
the first should be xxx plus one thirteenth (yyy-xxx), and so on.
xxx\ means line break, ignore the \ and all contiguous following whitespace
and consider the string conjoined.
There you have it. I reverse engineered the syntax of "colors="

Hope somebody likes it. Sometimes the sustain or something doesn't
startup correctly. Exit to the sound screen and try again and it works OK.
Any ideas about this little bug?
Seems like once you choose a scale and a rate there are only subtle
differences between different patterns. The scale really establishes the
character of the sound. Hopalong, chip, popcorn sound more alike than I
would have expected.
I wonder what it would be like if the orbit velocity could be varied also?
Sure is fun to play with.

Right. I got the best results with an all-white or
all-black key scale (sorry, don't know the technical
names for this). Some interesting dissonances are introduced
when you set just one black key on an all-white scale (and
vice versa).

I would be happy to provide website space at the site that we are
setting up for the fractint and fractal artist and developers.
It's actually the first of a much larger vision/project...
We are going to be providing forums, webspace for tools and files,
and e-commerce. The "different than normal" part of the site is
that we are going provide 3D worlds and galleries to display and sell
artists' work - fractal artists first, other types later. This 3D
space will be able to be entered with any VRML browser and IE or
Netscape. Mac supported as well. The space will be multi-user
enabled so that you can see and communicate with the other people
walking around as well.
If webspace will work instead of ftp, I will provide more info tomorrow.
