Yes. I am a lover of art and fractal beauty. As I write, my Windows is
downloading the contest images. It will be a few more hours downloading on
the weak phone line connection I have to the internet. I have encouraged a
friend next door to view the pictures, and he will probably vote, as I will
as soon as I can make a valid judgement (Of course I'll have to see them
all.)
I am in Astoria, Oregon, a small town at the mouth of the mighty Columbia
River.
I thought that thousands must have seen the images and voted by now. How
many people have? Only a few?
I am sharing the contest address with my mother in Alaska who is an artist
and will be a good judge.
Aloha to you all and especially those who give selflessly their energy to
encourage the creativity happening here.
Life is good. Hallelujah!
Some awesome music there, Fliguer.

Terry,
- I thought that thousands must have seen the images and voted by now.
Well, as nearly as I can tell, thousands *have* visited the site. But fewer
than one hundred have voted so far. No doubt the sheer size of the contest,
and the amount of work involved in choosing image, deters people from
voting. I do what I can to make it easier, and I do have some thoughts for
next year.

Subject: (fractint) xfractint-- how to install?
Hello.... I've downloaded 'xfrac310.zip', stuffed in a directory called
/usr/xfractint, unzipped it.
Although I've installed linuix on 4 machines and been able to
successfully network them together, I've never installed a pice of
software that wasn't on a distro cd. Needless to say, I'm a linux late
beginner
So, my question is... what to do next to install xfractint?

Did you compile it? I don't think it comes with a binary. Maybe we
should change that if a compatible linux binary can be made.

Thanks for your response Phil!
No, I didn't compile it -- it didn't occur to me that it needed to be
compiled (silly me). Anyway, I've never compiled any linux stuff,
although the compiler is on my system. Can you give me a hint as to what
the command line might look like? I've used other compilers (Pascal,
Basic, MASM, etc.), so the concept is not totally foreign to me.
Thanks again,
jerome

I read this message at 1:02:45 PM on Fri 8th Oct .If I lived in California I
would be asleep at this time .By 5pm our time in UK they will be having

in quicker you should logon as though you were on US time since the source of
most Fractint postings are from there.I frequently download email after
midnight and so catch mail sent during the US daytime.

FRACTINT
Well the bug report page at:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/robin.b2/buglist.htm
always carries the latest version (still 20.0) or you can find it at spanky:
http://spanky.triumf.ca/
and follow the links!
Cheers,

Hi Damien.
As you said, it's really not so easy to determine one's vote. There are
simply so many beautiful pictures, and I admire all the works even though
some may not fit my taste. So, I will have to revisit and give my vote, not
to put down most, but to honour my very personal favs.
BTW, I took some pictures to show my students and colleagues what you could
do (with fractint) if you just knew how. Thank you.

Subject: (fractint) Fractint v.20 question/bug?
I have noticed in v.20 that at times I obtain the corruption indicative of
not having the line "textsafe=save" - or safe, on loading an image. This
can occur either loading an image as a par or from a gif. An example of the
sequence is usually similar to the following:
The image was saved (s) - fract059. After exiting I went back to fractint
v.20, opened it, used (r) to load the image. Then obtained the "z" screen
for the information. I then hit escape as first step to backing out of
fractint. This returns to the image. The image was corrupt in the nature of
not having "text safe=safe" - horizontal lines through it ~ 3/16" wide. I
saved the image as a par to give an example, but on leaving fractint,
returning to recheck the par to insure it showed the corruption, the image
came up fine! I repeated the steps above, this time no corruption, and in
fact it does not always replicate.
My sstools.ini is the same as I used in fractint v.19.6 having the barest
minimum. This is being done out of a dos box instead of straight dos.
Is this a bug or do I need to edit my sstools.ini some more? Or not run
v.20 via the dos box as I did v.19.6/
NOTE: The formula file indicated in the par is listed as carlson.frm. I am
not sure where in the orgfrm collection 3DStalks_Pokorny resides; this file
is from an email Paul Carlson posted to the list quite sometime ago.

I'm new to fractals and although I know nothing of the
mathematics involved I'm totally captivated by what I've
seen to far. I'm eager to hear what the music fractals
sound like, but no matter what I try, I cannot get any of
them to play through my ESS 1868 sound card. (It is
compatible.)
I have read every scrap of information that I can find
on the Fractint home page and elsewhere but with no
success.
The music pars that came with Fractint 20 do make
somewhat feeble peeps from the PC speaker, but I
cannot hear any of those posted by Miguel. I think I
am loading these OK as they do create images.
I would appreciate if someone would tell me what I'm
doing wrong. (Sorry if this is the wrong forum for a
query of this nature.)

If you're running Fractint from Windows or a DOS Prompt window, you might=
try restarting in MS-DOS mode. I had the same problem and this solved it.=

The voting period has been extended, but due to a glitch in updating the

Greetings folks,
If you have already downloaded the contest site and wish to update your
download so that the voting form will again remember what you put into it,
you need only download this file:
http://www.fractalus.com/contest99/contest99-html.zip
This file is about five megabytes.

Hi !
I think the BLASTER environment variable must be set
to the address/irq settings of your card. I'll check
my settings at home and let you know.

Hi, Miguel.
I've lost your celebrated music parameters. Would you post them once more?
Gracias.

From: George Martin <GGMARTIN@compuserve.com>
Subject: (fractint) Orgform update
Friends,
I have posted an updated Orgform formula compilation to Lib9 of the
Compuserve Digital Art Forum, and to Noel Giffin's fractal database at:
http://spanky.triumf.ca/pub/fractals/programs/ibmpc/orgfrm.zip
The compilation now stands at more than 15000 formulas.
The compilation is fully Fractint v20 compliant. Hundreds of formulas
"broken" by the tougher error checking routines of the v20 parser code ha=
ve
been rewritten so they will work under the new Fractint release.
Note that v20 allows for placing your orgform files (i.e. those in the fo=
rm
_*.frm) in a separate directory, which will be searched by the program wh=
en
looking for a formula. This will significantly reduce the time it takes
Fractint to find a formula.
Formula authors should check the compilation to make sure all their
formulas which they want included have in fact made it in. If I have miss=
ed
some, please send me the formulas or let me know where I can go to get
them, and I'll include them in the next release.
Regards,
George Martin
