  165. In general the Althon significantly outperforms a PIII running at the same
  166. clock speed, and if you count the cost of buying motherboards their prices
  167. are close to equivalent, maybe slightly less for the Althon. However, you
  168. do need to _find_ an Althon motherboard, which can be harder than it
  169. should be.

  171. I'm upgrading to an Althon 600 or 650 as soon as the Via chipset for them,
  172. supporting a 133Mhz bus and AGP4x and other goodies, comes out, but who
  173. knows how long that'll take...

  194. I concur with Ian Kaplan, the Athlon should outperform an
  195. equivalently-clocked P-III. However, these chips are tuned for 32-bit
  196. performance, and FractInt is still a 16-bit DOS app. (Don't knock the
  197. developers, they all volunteer their time and they do know what direction
  198. FractInt needs to go.) So the performance difference *for FractInt* will
  199. probably not be as much as one might expect.

  232. WAV ? MP3 ? MIDI ? How could you get a MIDI file
  233. from the audio output ? (maybe on fractint V21...)

  304. Actually, Chromatic means using *both* white and black piano keys.
  305. If you use *only* black keys, the resulting musical scale is called
  306. pentatonic, and it is the one used by the quechuas in Bolivia and north of
  307. Argentina. It results in sweeter sounds than the "natural" or diatonic major
  308. scale.

  367. I just compiled xfractint 3.10 on Redhat 6.0. In general it workes OK 
  368. (apart from problems with colordepths other than 8bit, but I was told
  369. that this a known bug).

  372. I can't get into the menu corner parameters from neither 'type-specific
  373. parms' nor from 'select fractal type'. F6 or shift-6 just don't do
  374. anything although I can get the help screen with shift-1 and the 'Top
  375. Secret Developer's Screen' with shift-6 from 'info about image'.

  405. I'd say MP3, it's well established and very compact if you keep the
  406. bitrate down.

  408. A midi file would be quite possible but, since midi does not have a
  409. set of sound controls which correspond to the current low level
  410. FM control, getting anything sounding the same would be a bit
  411. hit and miss.

  438. the event that we can fill up a CD with them... Could we make a contest
  439. based upon these? Or some sort of Chart, like Billboard, with "hits" parade
  440. and the like? I mean, we had fractal music before (at least I knew about
  441. it), but we can have a duo here: fractal art and music, all in one, with
  442. people voting their favorites... Will we have "bands", say FrankTal and the
  443. Mandels, who will perform their fractunes alive? Do you think it's a dream?

  497. can generate a .txt file with the "raw" sound data,
  498. which in turn can be post-processed and converted

  523. As some of you know, I am leaving my current position at Rock River
  524. Internet, where I've been for the past two years. Ordinarily I would not
  525. bother anyone with the personal details of my life, but in this case it
  526. might affect some net resources of interest to you. :-)

  528. For quite some time now, Rock River Internet and its parent company ICD
  529. have graciously permitted me to run the Fractal-Art, Ultra Fractal, and
  530. PhiloFractal mailing lists, and also to run fractalus.com and the Infinite
  531. Fractal Loop. They have even permitted me to host the contest web sites (no
  532. small drain on net resources, I might add).
  533.  
  534. Knowing that I was leaving, I have over the past three months moved almost
  535. all of my net resources over to my own server. I plan to take this server
  536. with me to my new job, where I have already arranged to be able to set the
  537. server up. So things will continue right where they left off.
  538.  
  539. Now, for the only reason I bring this up: my new position is in Orlando,
  540. FL. That's roughly 1500 miles (2400km) from Rockford, IL. :-) Driving
  541. halfway across the US is going to take me a few days, and in that time,
  542. none of fractalus.com will be functional. All of those things I mentioned
  543. will be temporarily unavailable, but will return as they were before (or
  544. slightly improved). Please note, during the downtime, *no* messages to the
  545. lists run from fractalus.com will go through; in fact, you can expect them
  546. to bounce back to you. I'll post an announcement to the lists when they're
  547. back up.

  686. I nearly had these ready at about 8AM (I was already in here doing network
  687. upgrades) but got pulled away and only now have I been able to finish
  688. pulling in all the information for the contest results.
  689.  
  690. Just a reminder on how the results were generated. Each voter selected a
  691. first-, second-, and third-place image in each category. A first-place vote
  692. was worth three points; a second-place vote, two points; and a third-place
  693. vote, one point. The votes were recorded by the web server, with the list
  694. checked against confirmation codes that were mailed back. There were 105
  695. confirmed votes.
  696.  
  697. There were *no* ties for the first three positions in any of the
  698. categories. There was a three-way tie for fourth place in the "Best
  699. Lighting" category, just one point behind the third-place image.
  700.  
  701. For each image, the entry number, total points received, image title, and
  702. artist are listed. If there is interest, I can post a breakdown of how many
  703. first/second/third place votes each image received as well. Comments that
  704. were sent in with votes were recorded; I'll take care of sending those out
  705. to the artists when I get to Florida. (I won't be doing that by hand--it
  706. will all be sorted by a program and sent to the right artist automatically.)
