Subject: Re: (fractint) Does Soundblaster work?
I believe my sound card is a Soundblaster AWE 64 and it seems to work fine.
I followed the instructions in the demo and learned to make fractal sounds.
I played with it for a couple of hours last night. I am now planning to use
this Fractint function in my own music. Might well be my new obsession.

Greetings folks,
Just wanted to let you know that there was a bug in the "unmark" code which
caused all marks to be removed, not just the one for the image you
selected. This will be fixed shortly. Marking, however, worked just fine.

Subject: (fractint) More on makefcfg
I make a DOS boot disk under Windows 95, and booted with no
config.sys or autoexec.bat from a floppy, and makefcfg worked, so
the Win95 DOS must have DPMI services built in.
Last night I couldn't find an earlier version DOS boot disk, but I
must have one somewhere. The djgpp compiler comes with a
program called cwsdpmi.exe that provides DPMI services. It is
probably just a question of running this, however I can't test it until I
get a DOS environment with no DPMI.
What I may do it put the 22k program on my FTP site (it's free) and
let those of you who can't run makefcfg try it. I have only had two
reports.

The Linux version (at present) makes no use of assembly
language, and is probably quite a bit slower than the DOS version.
Our hope for the future is to get Fractint completely inside a 32 bit
memory environment and port some of the assembler for the most
critical bottlenecks for both Windows and Linux.

I have this peculiar situation - I can't get Fractint (any version) to
work without lots of visual noise (horizontal lines disrupting the images
in color cycling) so I have to re-boot to DOS. Then Fractint works as
beautifully as it used to on my old machine 3 years ago (a Northgate 66mhz
with 8megs of ram). But the music pars in Fractint 20 don't work in DOS.
When I go back into Windows 95 (I have a Dell 200mhz Pentium with 64megs
of ram) the music pars work beautifully, either in a DOS box or full
window. I can't seem to get these two conditions to synchronize. It
isn't a problem because, when I want to work visually, I boot to DOS.
When I want to work with the music pars I do it by calling Fractint up
directly in Windows.
When I type "set" at the DOS prompt the following line appears as the last
line in the display:
BLASTER= A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 E620
I checked the instructions in the Creative manual and the settings above
should work in DOS as well as Windows 95 - but they apparently don't. Has
anyone else encountered the same problem and can anyone give me a
suggestion or is this a vagary of my machine?
Thanks. Bill Ray.

Please don't be insulted, because you have probably tried
this, but: have you tried the "diagnose" command? I have
an 80 MHz 486DX2 running Win 3.1 (which is irrelevent,
since I'm running in pure DOS mode) and the sound demo
and other random pars are working fine (although I get the
same polyphonic sounds whether I'm in x, y, or z mode).
"Diagnose" should suggest the proper settings for your
Soundblaster in DOS mode. Do you have any DOS games
you can run (for comparison)?
Good luck, Bud

Subject: (fractint) Summer is ending, Fall approaches (2 pars)
Greetings.
A word of explanation for the accompanying two pars.
ds57 was generated from an original image by Paul Carlson (1998):
Petals_Barnsley1. I made a slight change in the parameters, P1, P2 and max
iterations, and changed the focal area (for want of a better expression) by
recentering the image via the zoom box. The color map was originally Droz
38, but again I made a slight modificatioon for the purpose of this image.
ds58 was generated by evolver set at defaults from ds57.
Hope you like them, and hope no one is offended by the synthesis and
modifcations as indicated above.

Subject: (fractint) fractint newbie questions
Hi, All!
What better way to present yourself to the list than
a couple of newbie questions? <grin> So here they go...
* I have organized my FRM, IFS, L, MAP and PAR files,
each flavour in its own directory, and my SSTOOLS.INI
reflects this with the parameters FORMULAFILE, IFSFILE,
LFILE and PARMFILE. But how do I make Fractint find my
MAP files?
* I am used to RGB settings ranging from 0 to 255, and
the system used by Fractint still confuses me a bit. Are
there any translation tables available anywhere?
Well, I guess I have to warn you: if you show kindness
to newbies and answer to my questions, there is a big
chance I will send more. <grin> Thanks in advance!

I can confirm that there is a difference. Below are two pars. CAUTION:
(1) When pasting the pars the color lines were breaking as if not enough
room, although screen font size is "9" (New Courier), and number of
characters is set to 80. Should have been enough. I have manually
widened the screen, how that will effect the reception as far as not
having the line split I am not sure. (2) Note that in the second par I
have the formula file as "kmitchel.frm" rather than s.frm.

Welcome to the list Nemo:
>>>* I have organized my FRM, IFS, L, MAP and PAR files,

reflects this with the parameters FORMULAFILE, IFSFILE,

The same way as FRM, IFS, etc., e.g.:
map=c:\fractint\mymaps
>>>* I am used to RGB settings ranging from 0 to 255, and
the system used by Fractint still confuses me a bit. Are
there any translation tables available anywhere?<<<
If you look inside a fractint MAP file you will notice that it defines colors in
0 to 255 RGB triplets as do most 24 bit systems. However, if you look more
closely you will see that all the numbers are divisible by 4. This gives you
only 262144 to choose from. This is the number of colors that were available on
the original VGA video cards for DOS. Also, as you probably already know,
fractint is limited to a pallete of only 256 colors at a time, so you will see
256 triplets in a map file. I don't think fractint will crash if you put a
number in a map file that is not divisible by 4 - it will just round it off.
Does this answer your question? If not, please email me.
Nick

Hi Marie,

The evolver (or parameter evolver / explorer to give it it's full title) is a
new addition to fractint which enables the erstwhile fractanaut to map
out the effects of changing parameters on a fractal.
It will put onscreen many small versions of the base image with
parameters changed so that the user can explore the way in which
the fractal varies when things are changed on the X,Y,Z menus.
This can be done in an orderly fashion with parameters varying
smoothly
across the screen to form a map of parameter space which can be
zoomed
into and explored.
Alternatively there is evolving mode where everything is varied at
random and the user just needs to pick the image variation that they
like the best to use as the seed for another generation of images.
Things can be set up so that the amout of random mutation from one
generation to the next is reduced in order to fine tune things.
The evolver is really best seen rather than explained so why not
download
v20.0 now and check out the demos included!
Hope this tempts you :-)
Robin.

rest assured I'll get round to it soon, have you found any similar
probems since or is it just that one image?

Yes, as soon as I get the CD set up, burned, and mailed out to the
volunteer duplicators, I can get the files zipped up and available for
download. It's a big download, too; 75M when all zipped together.

Greetings folks,
A few technical problems with the marking/unmarking mechanism, especially
with regards to Netscape, have been fixed. Thanks to several people (but
especially Ken Childress) for bringing these problems to my attention.
Voting is now fully functional. You may submit your votes and you should
receive a confirmation code via e-mail. You must then mail back that
confirmation code for your vote to be registered.
CDs will be sent out to volunteer duplicators tomorrow, so they should
start appearing in mailboxes next week. Several people have ordered, I will
see if I can start confirming receipt of these tomorrow.
