Ron,
<< Here is a par (first one I have submitted for Fractint in a very long=

Really nice music par! I really enjoyed it, and tried at various
resolutions, including large diskvideo modes (nice looooong sessions <g>)=
.
I particularly liked the scale mapping you used...good work!

Subject: (fractint) Fractal-Art '99 Contest: Drum Roll Please
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with great pleasure that I present to you the entries for the
Fractal-Art '99 Contest:
http://www.fractalus.com/contest99/
(Click the big word "Entries" right at the top. :-)
This isn't actually absolutely everything, but I know you're all dying to
see what was entered, and I didn't want to make you wait any longer. So,
please note:
- Animations are not posted yet.
- You can fill in the voting form, but if you actually attempt to vote
tonight you'll be asked to try again in a couple of days. Don't panic,
the form will remember everything you've put into it if your browser
has cookies enabled.
- Downloadable versions of the site aren't available yet.
- French and Spanish pages currently appear in English. (This is not the
translators' fault; the text for those pages was written less than two
hours ago, and they don't even have copies of it yet.)
+ Information on ordering the CD IS posted, although additional
arrangements may yet be made.
Those of you who are curious about the size of the contest web site may
drink in these statistics:
+ 6 directories
+ 3,311 files
+ 91,192,087 bytes
I won't tally up the amount of time spent on this, mainly because I don't
remember. :-)

Outstanding! After just a brief run through the thumbnails, I'm
impressed - and humbled :-) by the quality of the entries. Voting's
going to be tough, but I'm up for it!

After looking at the thumbnails, I went back and downloaded about 30 of
the images. I'm stunned! They are so wonderful! Everyone needs to see
the large images - if you only look at the thumbnails, you are cheating
yourself out of some great eye candy!
Thanks, Damien, Kerry, and everyone else!

Subject: (fractint) xfractint 310
Xfractint 310 runs if the X colour depth is 8 bits per plane (Linux: Redhat
6.0), Yay!
Some funnies:
- - I had to make sure that the image window had focus when pressing F keys
(e.g. F6) (otherwise wierd results, e.g. F1 being "escape")
- - Ctrl+any alphabet key does not seem to work at all.
- - Resizing the graphic window and then proceeding to try and draw causes it
to crash ("Segmentation Fault")
Only the "ismand" demos in Frac200.par (using Frac200.frm) worked,
everything else said: "could not understand hertz=150" or some other number.
After a number of failed @ retries, the program crashes ("Segmentation
Fault").
Just a question: the DOS version is written totally for a text/svga screen
type environment. Wouldn't it perhaps be simpler to port the dos version to
a Linux text/svga version ?
And anyway, shouldn't it be written as a Win32 app by now (there must be a
rich sponser who would pay the authors loads of money to put in the hundreds
of hours. This thing has such potential.)? The UI could then be designed
for a windowing environment, and then a port to X could use the same UI
design. I don't really understand what the advantages of the DOS
environment are.

Morgan,
Sylvie was entirely correct in her statement that the reason the srelease=
value wasn't included in the par is that it is at the default value. I ju=
st
double checked by resetting all the <F6> screen to default <F4> and writi=
ng
the par. Sure enough, none of the synth parameters were written in the pa=
r,
since they were all default.
Ie. the par not having reference to srelease is not the source of the
problem.

We (fractint development team) are working on improving the fractint
infrastructure for non-DOS environments in general and this should
improve in the next release or two.

Odd, that *should* work fine.

Resizing the graphic window doesn't achieve anything useful anyway.
xfractint still thinks its 'windows' is the entire screen.

Not sure about that, I haven't tried the new version of xfractint.

No, we're moving towards something that assumes less about the
environment to where xfractint should look and behave more like a
regular X app.

There is no rich sponsor, unless you consider me the Rich sponsor ;-).
I am the one that got sick of the status quo and decided to make the
major changes to the code base necessary to begin migrating fractint
towards a more modern GUI under windowed environments. (It might even
end up improving the GUI under DOS.)

I'm running fractint 20.0.
I've included and attached a .par file (since I don't know which will work
better) from a stock mandelbrot. Notice that there is a discontinuity in the
center (a circle) where iterations cross over 32767. Is this a "bug"? It looks
interesting, but I'm surprised to see such a thing.
The color "aliasing" makes for a neat spiral though. In the old old version
that I first used to make this pattern, max iterations was 32767, and there
was an "inner color" circle at the same spot as the discontinuity. If you have
the time, set max iterations to 32767 and try it. It has an interesting effect
when you color cycle.
I suppose that with deep zoom and floating point, these "color aliasing"
spirals are old hat now, but I thought it was pretty cool when I first discovered
it (1992).

Subject: (fractint) Does Soundblaster work?
Hello out there!
First of all, I gotta say that the evolver feature
of v.20 ist REAL great! However there's something which
makes me worry.
I'm running DOS-Fractint under the Win95-Surface.
(P133, Soundblaster AWE)
Unfortunately, Fractint produces no Sound-Output
neither on the PC-speaker (which is probably due to
the buggy speaker) nor on the Soundcard which elswhere
works great. Is Fractint designed for Soundblaster and
cards of that kind at all, or should this be regarded
as a bug?
Thanks,
Lionel.

The makefcfg program was compiled with the djgpp compiler, and

I've forgotten what little I ever knew about this topic. Can someone

Alternatively, there is a freeware DPMI server that is available at the
djgpp web site. If anyone can give directions for how to use that, I'd
also appreciate it.
Alternatively, we need to port makefcfg.c to an environment that
doesn't need DPMI. The source code makes explicit calls to DPMI.

That's funny, I never really found that much difference. When I measured
it, it was a matter of perhaps 3%. If you're seeing a bigger difference
than that, it's probably not that FractInt is running in a DOS box inside
Windows, but that you've got other things running in Windows that are
eating lots of CPU time.

I wrote the sound drivers from the original Soundblaster card
documentation so an AWE32 should work as long as it's backward
compatible with the old card as regards the FM synth. I haven't tested
it on an AWE32 myself but believe it should work.... can anyone verify
this?
You could try checking the sound mixer control in windows, try
turning up all the controls and if you're using the windows standard
mixer then make sure you've checked out the mixer properties and have
all possible controls enabled.
Hope this helps,
Robin.
