Subject: (fractint) Popcorn inconsistency
I hesitate to call this a bug, maybe more of a miswart.
When using the evolver on the Popcorn type, the spawned variants are not
clipped to fit their boxes, spilling out instead to overlap each other. On
a hunch, I looked at a popcorn fractal through a <V>iewwindow, and saw the
same nonclipping there. It's noticeable only because other dynamic-like
types (dynamic, mandelcloud, latoocarfian, bifurcation etc.) don't do this.
I've just checked an old version 18.2 which I recalled I had knocking
around; the same thing happens there. As no-one has apparently noticed it
before (or at least considered it worth reporting), it's clearly something
that is of _very_ minor importance - only the evolver makes it readily
apparent.

Subject: (fractint) Fr20: Problem with DiskVideo?
Using Fractint 20. Just generated what was supposed to be
a 2048x1536x256 color image using DiskVideo. (The Evolver
is fun, even at 640x480!)
After the image completed, I saved it using the "S"
option, and opened the image in CorelPhotoPaint 7 so I
could see it. (Fractint 20 still doesn't support my Elsa
GLoria Synergy for better than 640x480x256. Even tried
Makefcfg on it - gives me 640x400x256 or 640x480x256.)
PhotoPaint reports an image size of 1000x750 pixels. I'm
running it under W95 on a system with 128MB RAM. Even
after I kicked the expanded and extended memory settings
up to 16MB, it won't produce an image larger than that.
Why can't I get my big image?

David,
Sorry, there must be something strange about either your system or your
viewer- or possibly you were attempting to view the wrong image?
I just ran the basic mandelbrot in diskvideo 2048x1536x256 and viewed it
with CPIC as well as photoshop, and it displayed fine and at the correct
size.
I have done diskvideo sizes to 16,000x12,000x256 in ver. 20 with no
problems.
Try again?

Thanks, I ran the demo and the visual portion worked fine - but no sound until
the point at which BOTH the pc internal speaker and sound card were turned
on. Then I heard those anemic beeps - so you were right, it was the internal
speaker. I am running Windows 95 but boot up to DOS for Fractint since
Fractint (versions 19.3, 19.6, 20.0) does not work under Windows on my
machine. I did run a music CD after the demo and it worked fine, so the sound
card is functioning. I have a 200mhz Pentium with 64megs Ram and 2 megs Video
ram.
I guess the sound function just cannot work on my system. Thanks again for
your suggestion.

Bill,
when you ran the CD (which played) were you in W95? It sounds <g> like yo=

DOS drivers for your sound card might not be loaded.
You can try to run Fractint through W95 and use a diskvideo mode - which
allows sound as well. Could you try that? after starting Fractint, ask fo=

a diskvideo mode, and <@> <F6> and load the frac200.par, which contains
several sound pars...some use both the PC speaker and the soundcard, othe=

What is your soundcard, and, if you know, what synth chip does it have?
Most soundblaster compatibles have the OPL-3 synth chip, which is what th=

sound features in Fractint are written for. With other synths, YMMV.

Then again if there are no drivers loaded then fractint *should* give an
error message rather than just staying silent.
To see for sure just type 'set' from your dos prompt and see if resulting
techno-babble includes the line:
BLASTER= Axxx Ix
and so on where xxx are numbers.
If you see this then the most likely problem is one of your sound card's
mixer settings, look through the documentation for the name of the
program you need to run in order to control the mix of the various
sources within your card (i.e. cd, wave, synth, auxilliary etc) it may
simply be that the FM output is turned down.
If it's not that then tell me what you get on the BLASTER= line
above.
>You can try to run Fractint through W95 and use a diskvideo mode -
That's a very good diagnostic idea! try it as Bill says, if it works then
there are other tips for getting fractint running under W95 about.
It works fine under win95 for me (I have a matrox video card).
Good luck!
Robin.

Tim:
I got the following problem with the evolver.
I started with 2 to select a par. Notice that the par used fn*z+z fractal
type.
Then I entered the evolver by means of Alt-5. Once the thumbnails where
displayed, I typed Ctrl-E to change "yes" to "no" in order to see the image,
without having moved to some other thumbnail.
The image was totally changed, but when typing z, the parameters strangely
were the same as the initial ones!
Please note that this behavior seems not to occur with the standard
Mandelbrot.
Anyhow, I am completey fascinated with this feature!

PNG has been standardized for a long time now. Any problems you're
experiencing have nothing to do with the 'standardization of PNG'.

Either people are writing home-brew PNG files (which is not to imply
that PNG isn't standard, but perhaps that programs out there are
generating non-standard PNGs) or the browser software hasn't been
written to accomodate standard PNGs.

Hi Robin,
Sorry. I didn't realize that you had built in the error message! That's
nice to know.
FWIW, one of the reasons that I like to use diskvideo mode for playing
music pars is that since diskvideo will run in a window, it gives me acce=

to the windows desktop for adjustments to the mixer controls, FX, etc.
while listening to the par and the effects of the various controls, etc. =
on
the sound. Real-time sound manipulation has to be done this way afik.

Hmmmm.. does the same happen if you move to another and then back

Now that is very bizzare, though you should also check the x screen to
see
that some radically different inside or outside colouring method hasn't
been selected.
If you can make this happen consistantly then it would help me sort
things out if you could mail me a par for the starting image or if you
hit S just after the first set of images is generated and then mail me
the file that was saved.
Cheers,
Robin.

The nature of the book market at present makes a Fractint book
project infeasible. If Fractint were an up-to-date Win98/Win2000
package with lots of Web features built in, so that the book could
tie into the latest hot stuff, it might be marginally feasible.
A topic that might sell would be "Web Windows 2000 Fractals For
Dummies and Idiots"
Noooo thanks! If you doubt me, I *do* speak with some experience
as an author of five books :-) Not that "past performance is any
indicator of future results".
You are right that the fractint books are out of date, although
Fractal Creations 2nd Edition is still a very nice book for Fractint
users if you can get your hands on it.

Someone else mentioned this. The popocorn type is absolutely
unique in the way it works, and the folks who worked on it (Robin
Bussell and Jonathan Osuch get the credit) understandably didn't
think to check popcorn. My guess is that this is very easy to fix.
We'll look into it.

The problem is that Netscape Communicator has a poor PNG

As promised, a couple of examples of what evolver can do.
Of course, you can come to the same solution without the
automated help, but for most, especially novices, this will
be a real time saver.
For reference, I used random mode (just because it's easier
than the x/y mode in its current state) on one complex parameter
at a time, with limits (typically) starting at 1 and with a slow
convergence factor of 0.9 (1.0 if I wasn't ready to converge yet).

Admittedly, the initial image in the second case is a rather
bland item I came across while flipping through functions
looking for promising candidate Gallet-6-08 types; but the
Evolver can take you from one interesting case to another
as well.
Navigating the possibilities is a bit slower than
sitting at the console brute-forcing my way through, but
the advantage is that you can do other things while Fractint
does the work. I did both of these in 30-40 minutes, making
selections between bites at dinner (something only a bachelor
or someone with a very understanding or similarly addicted
mate can get away with), watching the idiot box, folding
laundry, etc.
Finally, in case you have comitted the unforgivable sin of
not having this wonderful frm in your posession, here it is:

I think Fractal Creations is a nice book for anyone
who is interested in fractals. I have and have read
several books on fractals and the short early chapters
gave the best description of the basics of orbits and
bailout, Mandelbrot, Julia and Newton formulas etc.
It really made some things clear that were fuzzy to me
before. I think anyone who is new to fractals and wants
to understand it would like it even aside from the Fractint
specific parts.

I can confirm that even someone who did not write the book can agree
with this. It is especially the case, as being an awfully old computer book
by now, if you can find it it should be pretty cheap. My copy was not cheap,
but I sure don't regret the money spent.

I am running Win98 and run Fractint in a full screen DOS window. I had to
play around a bit to get the sound card to work. The card came with some
DOS utilities which must be loaded during boot up for the card to work with
DOS programs. Wish I could save the output as a MIDI file, though. Here is
a par (first one I have submitted for Fractint in a very long time :-)).
The graphics resolution will affect the tune.

Thanks, I ran the demo and the visual portion worked fine - but no sound
until
the point at which BOTH the pc internal speaker and sound card were turned
on. Then I heard those anemic beeps - so you were right, it was the
internal
speaker. I am running Windows 95 but boot up to DOS for Fractint since
Fractint (versions 19.3, 19.6, 20.0) does not work under Windows on my
machine. I did run a music CD after the demo and it worked fine, so the
sound
card is functioning. I have a 200mhz Pentium with 64megs Ram and 2 megs
Video
ram.
I guess the sound function just cannot work on my system. Thanks again for
your suggestion.

When I put out a search for the book, after months of looking, Amazon.com
found it for me.... for $52!
One of the nice folks here learned that I was looking for a copy and when he
found one, let me know where to get it at less than the original cost.
Now that I have it, it doesn't leave my ownership<G>

It's too bad Tim Wegner and Bert Tyler won't reap any part of the profits from
that sale. :-D The original price for the 2nd edition of Fractal Creations was
$34.95, but I bought mine at Barnes & Noble back then for a small discount.
Still a great FractInt reference book to this day.

I run Fractint2.0 under w98. (one of these days I'll brave DOS.) If I
enter just ONE false command,
(ie. g or v on the keyboard) the program freezes. (ADK2 proccessor, 64
ram,...SF7 video mode)
HOWEVER...When this program `partially' glitches, I get a linear 3-split
view of :... 1) (upper third) 0--1--3 pattern of current fractal,
2)(mid-screen to one inch above bottom) black screen,; (and here's the
kicker, 3)(last inch of screen) a virtual blue needlepoint pattern of
the extremes of a window titlebar, with the `minimize/enlarge/close'
boxes on the left (in reversed order) , and a beautiful sewwing pattern
of the word FRACTINT on the right! I was able to hit s and save this
kodak moment. This is my background till something weirder replaces it!
