I, for one, thank you for posting this message to this list. In the near
(hopefully, if I can find time between rennovating one house, getting
another ready to sell, and so on) I was giving serious consideration to
putting up a web site as I have threatened to do for some time. And as part
of the site, I would of course have probably put up a fractal "gallery"
(stop rolling on the floor laughing!) which would probably have had .gif
images, though I may have converted to .jpg for space considerations.
There is no question now. Should I obtain the time, all images will be
converted into .jpg format - until royalties become required for them also.

Subject: (fractint) Contest 99 Category Breakdown (and other stats)
Greetings folks,
In case you're wondering why the contest entries aren't posted yet, it's
because I've been busy putting out other fires. I've verified all entries
in the database as best I can, though, so I thought I'd post this information.
Note: the total for software adds up to more than the number of entries.
This is because a very large number of entries used more than one software
package.

If you ever do reproduce the problem, let us know the exact steps.
If anyone else sees something similar, see if you can consistently
get the problem with a simplke series of steps, and if so, let us
know.

JPEG was developed as an international standard, and the official spec does
refer to a number of patents. The baseline compression that almost
everything uses (everything that I know of) relies on the freely-usable
Huffman compression; the slightly more efficient arithmetic coding is
covered by patents belonging to IBM, AT&T, and Mitsubishi, so nobody uses
it, little software implements it, and it gets largely ignored.

David,
Nice image...now try this...with the image displayed, notice the "ring"
whose inside edge forms a complete oval, and whose outside edge extend
slightly outside the image on all four sides. Hit <+> to start color
cycling and speed it up until a color band in that ring I described makes=
about one complete revolution (should be clockwise) per four seconds or s=
o.
Now, stand back from your monitor about five feet or so, and stare at the=
very center of the image for as long as you can <g>.
Then shift your gaze directly down to your keyboard.
Whoooaaahhh!!

Subject: (fractint) Xfractint problems
<FontFamily><param>Times New Roman</param>Can anyone make sense of these error messages? The latest Xfractint
compiles perfectly for me under virtually the same environment as that of
this user (Red Hat Linux 5.2)
Tim
Well, compiling of the newest xfractint (tw04.zip) was going along
smoothly until it hit 'loadfile.c'. Then I got the following error
messages:
gcc -I. -DXFRACT -DNOBSTRING -g -DBIG_ANSI_C -DLINUX -c
loadfile.c -o
loadfile.o loadfile.c: In function `fgetwindow': loadfile.c:1328: `EACCES'
undeclared (first use this function) loadfile.c:1328: (Each undeclared
identifier is reported only once loadfile.c:1328: for each function it
appears in.) make: *** [loadfile.o] Error 1
I'm not a C/C++ programmer, but I thought I'd look thru the file anyway
and see if I could figure out how to fix the problem. Anyway, I added the
line: "EACCES = 0;" near the top of the file, and typed "make xfractint"
again. This time when gcc encountered that line, I got the following
message:
loadfile.c:40: warning: data definition has no type or storage class
(I later learned while looking thru fractint.c that I should have put
"int" in front of that declaration line.)
The compiler then continued on until I got:
gcc -I. -DXFRACT -DNOBSTRING -g -DBIG_ANSI_C -DLINUX -c
prompts1.c -o

I have "limits.h" in: /usr/include/ , /usr/include/linux/ and
/usr/include/sys/ and I *still* get the same error message.
Line 52 in limits.h reads: " #include_next <<limits.h>" I have changed it
to: <<linux/limits.h> , <<include/limits.h> , <<usr/include/limits.h> , and
*still* get the same error message! I'm not sure where I should define the
include path... In Makefile perhaps? If so - how? (In other words - what's
the correct syntax to use?

Hmmm, strange one... Like Tim says, see if it happens again and if
you can pin down the circumstances then pop a report onto the buglist
page for us to chew over.

Good idea! I'll see what I can do, there are a few glitches around that
area that seem to have slipped through as I was concenrating on the
random evolving side of things. Thanks for the feedback, it's interface
details like this that I'm looking for to improve the way people interact
with the evolver/explorer.

The buglist, is, of course:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/robin.b2/buglist.htm
Looking at it I just realized that Fractint 20.0 can out on the
infamous 9/9/99 date :-)
I have made minor changes to the file that contains Xfractint. It now
matches version 20.0.
The file is at:
ftp://ftp.phoenix.net/pub/USERS/twegner/xfract310.zip

That should be:
ftp://ftp.phoenix.net/pub/USERS/twegner/xfrac310.zip
(No "t" in the filename.)
I'm downloading it now and I'll see how it compiles...

Robin,
After further analysis, this would only be practical if everyone
used it the same way I do, one paramater pair (i.e. p1(real) = x,
p1(imag) = y) at a time. I have some additional thoughts which
I will relay privately; I just wanted to get this part out to the list
to publically admit I was being a bit myopic 8-)

If you use an application to generate them dated pre 1994 then you are free
of any charges .I was assured some time ago that the Unysis LZW patent does not cover
GIF images made outside the USA. My GIF images are generated with software
written and sold in the UK.

<P><B>What you should see when JavaQuat start</B> is a blue area on the
left and a green or gray area on the right. The blue area is where you
can control the picture you are going to draw. I call it the blue argument
entry area. The numbers and button settings for a given fractal will be
refered to as the fractal's <B>arguments</B>. On the right are four (4)
drawing areas (2 by 2). Each drawing area has three (3) buttons at the
bottom. </P>
<P>Each drawing area comes with a set of arguments pre-loaded. If you click
on the "Show Args." button of a drawing area the values for the
pre-loaded picture, or the last picture that was drawn on it, will be displayed
in the blue argument area. If you then click on a draw button the picture
described in the blue area will be drawn. <B>To see all the pre-loaded
fractals, </B>go to each drawing area, click on the "Show Args."
button and then on the "Draw" button. </P>
<P>If you see something in one of the pictures that you would like to enlarge,
drag the mouse across the area you want enlarged. A square box will be
drawn where you dragged the mouse to show the section of the current picture
that will be enlarged if you proceed to click on any draw buton. The values
in the blue arguments area will change to indicate the new center and new
"View Size". </P>
<P>If you want to change the size of the picture change the value in the
"Picture Size" box, just above right center in the blue argument
entry area. Values between 9 and 301 should be possible, though the upper
limit may depend on your browser. If you want an even bigger picture, click
on the button that says "1 Big Canvas". "Picture Size"
can then be set as high as 609 on some browsers. </P>
<P><B>NOTE:</B> If you are using Netscape on a Mac you will have various
things go blank frequently. If you just slightly adjust the size of the
Netscape window the picture and arguments will be restored, at least for
a while. If you are using any browser on any platform you will experience
some minor problems. I am not aware of any bug that appears in more than
one browser - platform combination or applet viewer - platform combination.
That indicates to me that the problem is not with my Java code. But, of
course, no code of even moderate size is ever bug free, so if you think
I've goofed up (1) try another browser and see if the problem persists
and (2) if it does, send me email at <A HREF="mailto:lystad@iglobal.net">lystad@iglobal.net</A>

I'd like to keep any further discussion of the Unisys topic related to
Fractal software.
I am a member of the PNG team (albeit a minor one). My position
is that I would like to get out from under GIF and use PNG for
Fractint. This would have the bonus that Truecolor is handled by
PNG, so we wouldn't need another format for truecolor. We would
have to finally design the PNG chunk I have reserved for fractal
information, and supply conversion software for old GIFs that would
translate the fractal information stored in the GIF.
The only reason that we haven't done this is that libpng code for
handling PNG needs a lot more resources than GIF. This is a non-
issue for most software, but a serious problem for the DOS Fractint
which uses a memory model that limits the dotal near data to 64K.
(It took me half a day to add rough PNG saving to Xfractint.) I have
though of ways around this for the DOS version, but decided a long
time ago that it would be a waste of time, since all the effort would
be moot when Fractint is finally ported out of DOS. I'm just
embarressed this has taken so long - the development team has
been operating less intensely for quite a while.
Meanwhile, there are tools available that allow you to convert your
Fractint images to PNG for posting on Web sites. These can be
viewed with any up to date version of IE or Netscape.

It's still a good idea for maybe an Fkey in the evolver control menu,
it'd take away a lot of hassle for those who want to explore the
parameter space around an image they've found by other means.
Also in the absence of any four dimensional hyperVGA displays so
far it makes a lot of sense to just explore two parameters at a time :-)
Cheers,
Robin.

Subject: (fractint) Type=test is broken
This is hardly a show stopper, but type=test is broken in version
20.0. The fix is to comment out the declaration of thelocal variable
"col" in test() in miscfrac.c, which in effect makes the routine use
the global version.
It's a rule of good software engineering to avoid global variables. We
have violated this a fair bit ... :-)

Subject: (fractint) Trouble with Evolver
I have downloaded and installed Fractint 20, which is great. However, I
have not been able to use Evolver. When I invoke the zoom function the
rectangle can only move halfway vertically, horizontally or left or
right - the mouse seems frozen. Is there a parameter or command I can
put into sstools.ini to make the Evolver function work or is there a
command-line fix. So far the Sound function doesn't work either,
although I do get a 'beep' after a fractal is finished loading, so the
sound card seems to be functioning.
I run Fractint20 under DOS on a 200mhz Pentium with 64megs of ram and
2megs of video ram. I have changed video modes and that does not help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To select another image, you have to press Ctrl while
pressing the arrow keys. I have been glued to this new
feature to the extent that I'm clueless to whatever else
is new!
Examples coming in the near future...

And here we go again! Welcome to a Windows only world!
Of course, when PNG is actually standardized enough to
work right, it's a good replacement for GIF. But I've
been to too many sites where the PNGs won't display in
such up-to-date browser versions as Netscape Communicator
4.61.
Personally, I expect that when Unisys tries to enforce
their patent on GIF, they'll be blown out of the water by
the first contestant who walks in with an attorney and
points out that they have been essentially refusing to
enforce it for so long now that they have basically said
people can use it for free.
Hmmmpph.
