What, me worry? Are you worried that some producer in LA or some ad
accountant in NY are actually going to figure out how to write fractal
parameters? They can sell them, but they can't write them. I should know. I
work in TV, and I can't figure squat shit about them! Keep up the good
work!!!

I'm no lawyer, thank Ralf, but as I understood the affair, Unisys was
extracting patent fees from the authors of GIF _software_, not GIF image
files.
Otherwise one could have the analogous situation of a novelist being
hounded for money by the writers of his word processing software (Microsoft
please do not take note).
Secondly, Unisys's demands are directed at the writers of for-profit GIF
software, so Fractint appears to be safe anyway.
Thirdly, PNG is the better format anyway. The fact that it can even contain
palette-based images (PNG type 3) is an added bonus that ought to encourage
a migration away from GIF.

Ummm, try setting "textsave=text" wherever it's supposed
to be set - sorry, I don't remember. THat might fix it.
Then again, it might not. On our old Diamond Stealth 64
Series 2000, all Fractint and W9x did was freeze the
system. (Fortunately, it works fine under OS/2.) The
problem didn't disappear until we replaced the display
adaptor.

Running on an Elsa GLoria Synergy display adaptor with
8MB of VRAM. FWIW, there's aparently no VESA support
beyond 640x480x256. If only either the freeware W31

Same viewer(s) that I've used for years - CorelPhotoPaint
7. I haven't checked them in PaintShop Pro or PMView, but
I've never encountered the problem with images from
Fractint 19.6 at up to 2048x2048x256.

Well, I tried it with six different images. Every single
one came out that way.

Well, mine displayed, but it was not the 2048x1536x256
that I specified in Fractint 20. My system is set to a
1024x768 desktop, and the image (displayed full screen at
1:1 size) was smaller than both dimensions).

Really???? Sounds like something to play with! That's,
what, a file size of 6,144,000,000 bytes? ;-)
> Try again?
Sure. I do like the Evolver. That is really cool!
Just tried it now using the basic Mandelbrot. It worked.
Now lets try some other things ... And now it's working.
Don't ask me!
The only thing I remember changing was kicking both EMS
and XMS settings up to 16384KB, but either one is far
larger than what the image would need ...
Anyway, thanks to Tim and the Stone Soup Group for adding
more fun things to play with! Hurrah!

But they did, it was second-hand. The amazon.com book was second-hand, too,
and it was minus the CD. They wanted $52. Your incorrect assumption was
understandable, though.
Anyone who was online here with me 'way back then' knew that I had given
away my original, which I purchased, with the expectation that it would be
easy for me to replace it. NOT!
Marie :)

It's too bad Tim Wegner and Bert Tyler won't reap any part of the profits
from
that sale. :-D The original price for the 2nd edition of Fractal Creations
was
$34.95, but I bought mine at Barnes & Noble back then for a small discount.
Still a great FractInt reference book to this day.

Subject: (fractint) popcorn and evolver issue solved!
Turners out that type=popcorn spilling out over the evolver postage
stamps is a feature not a bug :-)
The popcorn fractal uses the same routine fot its plotting as is
used for plotting orbits, except that it turns off restoring the screen.
This routine clips pixels to the physical screen but not the(smaller)
virtual screen. Normally the physical and virtual screen are the
same. The two cases where they are different, and the virtual
screen is smaller, are viewwindows and the evolver. No one has
ever complained, but type=popcorn also spills outside a
viewwindows screen (try it). The evolver and viewwindows create
small virtual screens in exactly the same way.
So this is a "feature" because it is on purpose. :-) Bill Jemison, our
sound wizard, has created a lot of music with fractint using
viewwindows, and he *counts* on having orbits spill outside of the
viewwindows frame. However I doubt Bill cares about this for the
evolver since I doubt he'll use the evolver for music. (But you never
know.)
There are two cures. One is to clip the orbits to the virtual screen,
bit only when the evolver is on (very easy). This is probably a
perfectly good solution, but I think it goes against (modulating voice
to a hushed reverent tone) "The Stone Soup Philosophy", which is
to give the user as much (possibly absurd) freedom as possible.
Somebody might LIKE evolving popcorn fractals and having them
spill over the postage stamp boundaries! SO I propose a new
option, something like "cliporbit=" which would default to "no" ( the
present behavior). If set to "yes" it would constrain both popcorn
and orbits to stay within the prescribed virtual screen pixel limits.
Comments?
Tim

I would use Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com to find out-of-print books for me
only as a last resort. There are many used-book dealers on the net now. The
biggest and maybe the best of them is Powell's in Portland, Ore.,
http.//www.powells.com , in case any of you want to buy a used copy of Tim's
Fractal Creations book. The 2nd edition came with a compact disk, a 3.5 inch
diskette with FractInt V. 18.21, and a pair of 3D glasses to view 3D fractals.
Inquire if those items are with the book before you elect whether to buy it.

Subject: (fractint) Contest '99 Update
Greetings folks,
As my weary eyes beg for a respite from their labor, I summon the last
vestiges of energy and write these words, to let you, gentle reader, know
the status of our long-awaited contest web site.
I am very nearly finished. The hardest part--which I did not have time to
do before the entry deadline had passed, and did not expect to take as long
as it has--is now done. That part is the voting mechanism. Last year, it
was not very convenient to vote, it was cumbersome and you had to write
down archaic entry numbers and enter them into the appropriate blanks, and
if you didn't fill the entire form out in one sitting you had to start over
later.
This year things will be different. When you view the entries in a
category, you will see thumbnails of all the images. Click one, and you
will get a full-size view. Once you have that full-size view, you will be
able to move from one full-size image to the next (you won't have to go
back to the thumbs page) and more importantly, you will be able to MARK
images you like, and the marks will be remembered. You can of course unmark
images as well.
When you open up the voting form, you will find that your marked images are
listed right at the top. Choose one and you'll see a thumbnail of it; click
the thumbnail and you'll get a new window with the full-size image. This
will make it very easy for you to get the entry numbers of the images you
liked.
But that isn't all. When you fill in your votes for first, second, and
third place in a category, you will see thumbnails for those, too, which
you can click to get full-size images. AND you will have a convenient place
to add your comments, right next to each image. If you enter a number that
doesn't belong to the category you're putting it in, you'll be reminded
right away.
But that's not the best part. The best part is that if you close the voting
form and re-open it later, it will *remember* everything you've put in it
(if your browser has cookies enabled). Every voted image, every marked
picture, every word of your comments will be recorded on your system, so
that you won't have to do it all over again if you accidentally close your
browser--or if you can't finish it all in one sitting.
It is the programming of all this magic that has deprived me of sleep these
past few days. I also discovered tonight that where I thought the contest
entries would only require 1200 separate web pages, it turns out they will
need 2400. So I have built all of those, too.
I expect to be able to finish up tomorrow (there are only a few
miscellaneous pages to do) and get everything posted. Don't all rush to the
web site, I'll post a notice here tomorrow when I do have everything done.
But I just wanted to let you know where things stand. I'll post information
on ordering CDs tomorrow, too.
One last thing: because of the extremely long time it has taken to get the
entries posted, voting will be extended *two weeks*. You will have through
October 9 to view images and send in your votes. This should provide enough
time for everyone to browse or download the web site, or order a CD if they
are so inclined.
And now, I'm going home to sleep.

To Timothy Wegner, Jonathan Osuch, George Martin, Robin Bussell, et al:
Thank-you for Fractint V 20.0.
The "New Features of 20.0" section of Fractint.doc lists 65 items, some
with multiple features. It will take me quite a while to try each. My
enthusiasm, however, will not allow me to delay acknowledgement.
The video mode configuration program Makefcfg.exe accurately configured
Fractint.cfg for my Matrox Millenium G200 video card.
The parser speed-up (Chuck Ebbert) is very welcome. A quick survey:
Fractal V 19.6 V 20.0 Ratio
- ------- ------ ------ -----
_BI0-00 2'50" 2'20" 82%
_BP0-04 4'14" 3'37" 85%
_AH0-00 4'23" 3'24" 78%
_AG0-00 5'57" 4'55" 83%
_AA1-00 8'28" 7'44" 91%
_AA1-04 11'37" 10'42" 92%
Coloring option "Inside = atan" was just what I needed to finish an
image.
In writing parameter files, the "maximum line length" field will make it
convenient to include parameter files in e-mail text.
The new 32767x32767 pixels limit for images will be a significant
enhancement for quality, large prints. To Fractint.cfg, I added some
higher resolution Disk Video lines, following the layout of the others.
Results: Fractal _BI0-00 at 1600x1200 (1,920,000) pixels in 2'26" and
at 3200x2400 (7,680,000) pixels in 9'40". The 3200x2400 pixels image
looked fine in MS Photo Editor.
I am in training with Fractal Evolver (Robin Bussell). What potential!
I appreciate the documentation.
Thanks again,
David Dollevoet
